As electrical automobile gross sales surge, discussions flip to noise and security

Hyperloop, hydrogen-powered trains and air taxis. As the 21st century progresses, the way people get from A to B is on the cusp of a major change driven by design and innovation.

While the above technologies may still be a few years away from widespread adoption, that doesn’t mean the change isn’t already underway.

Around the world, national and local governments are trying to reduce emissions and improve air quality in cities, with many betting on a growing sector: battery electric vehicles.

There is undoubtedly a dynamic behind the industry. According to a recent report by the International Energy Agency, around 3 million new electric cars were registered last year, a record and an increase of 41% compared to 2019.

Looking ahead, the IEA says the number of electric cars, buses, vans and heavy trucks on the roads – its forecast doesn’t include two- and three-wheel electric vehicles – is projected to reach 145 million by 2030.

If governments step up efforts to meet international energy and climate goals, the global fleet could grow even further, reaching 230 million by the end of the decade.

A changing world

As the number of electric vehicles on the world’s roads increases, society must adapt.

Extensive charging networks, for example, need to be rolled out to meet increased demand and to dispel persistent concerns about “range anxiety” – the idea that electric vehicles cannot make long journeys without losing power and getting stranded.

Another area in which we will notice changes concerns noise: electric vehicles are not only emission-free, but also significantly quieter than their diesel and gasoline cousins.

This means less noise pollution in urban areas – a clear thing – but it also poses a potential challenge for other road users, especially those with vision problems.

“It can be very difficult for blind or visually impaired people to judge traffic,” Zoe Courtney-Bodgener, Policy and Campaigner for the UK’s Royal National Institute of Blind People, told CNBC in a telephone interview.

Courtney-Bodgener explained that more and more “quiet” modes of transport are being used, using the example of bicycles and larger electric and hybrid vehicles.

“If you can’t always see these vehicles reliably or with your eyesight, the sound is even more important,” she said.

“And if the noise is not there or is not loud enough to reliably detect these vehicles, there is of course a risk, because … you cannot reliably know when a vehicle is approaching you.”

The law of the land

It should be noted that laws and technology have been put in place around the world to address this problem.

For example, in the European Union and the United Kingdom, all new electric and hybrid vehicles must use an audible vehicle warning system, or AVAS for short, from July 1st. This will build on and expand on the previous regulations that came into force in 2019.

According to the rules, the AVAS should step in and make noises when the speed of a vehicle is less than 20 kilometers per hour (about 12 miles per hour) and when it is reversing.

According to a 2019 UK government statement, the sound can “be temporarily turned off by the driver if necessary”.

According to the EU regulation, the noise generated by the AVAS should “be a continuous tone that informs pedestrians and other road users of a vehicle that is in operation”.

“The noise should easily reflect vehicle behavior,” it adds, “and should sound similar to a vehicle of the same category equipped with an internal combustion engine.”

RNIB’s Courtney-Bodgener told CNBC that while her organization was “happy” that the AVAS policy had been translated into UK law, it had not “done everything we asked of it”.

She went on to explain how the speed at which the AVAS turns on might need to be increased to 20 or 30 miles per hour.

“We are not convinced that if … a vehicle is traveling at a speed of 21 miles per hour, for example, it would generate enough noise on its own to be reliably recognized by noise.”

Another area of ​​concern concerns older vehicles. “There are already many, many electric and hybrid vehicles that were produced before this legislation came into effect that did not have the sound technology,” she said.

There are currently no plans to retrofit these, she added. “This is worrying because there are already thousands of vehicles on the UK’s roads that do not have AVAS technology.”

From the industry’s point of view, it appears to be satisfied with the existing regulations. In a statement emailed to CNBC, AVERE, The European Association for Electromobility, told CNBC that it supported the “current legislative status quo”.

“The limit of 20 km / h is sufficient, as other noises – especially rolling resistance – take over at this level and are sufficient for pedestrians and cyclists to hear approaching electric and hybrid vehicles,” added the Brussels organization.

“In fact, the requirement of additional noise above 20 km / h would deprive European citizens of one of the main advantages of electrification: lower noise levels at city speeds.”

Noise pollution can indeed be a serious problem. According to the European Environment Agency, over 100 million people in Europe are “exposed to harmful environmental noise”. The agency classifies road traffic noise as “a particular public health problem in many urban areas”.

Regarding the need for modernization of older cars, AVERE said: “Only a very small proportion of the electric vehicles on European roads would be subject to retrofitting obligations, as many existing vehicles were already equipped with AVAS in anticipation of the new ones and that the rules were introduced in good time to meet the expected mass consumption of To support electric vehicles in the years to come. “

Should it emerge that “additional requirements” are needed, AVERE is ready to work with policy makers.

The future

The discussions and debates on this topic are likely to go on for a long time and it is clear that a balance will have to be found in the future.

To Take a look at Covid Protocols, Cruise Traces Flip to Volunteer Guinea Pigs

Since March of last year, cruise ships carrying more than 250 people have been prohibited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from sailing in U.S. waters. To start again, they need to follow a complex process that, in some cases, involves simulated cruises designed to test Covid-19 protocols. Hundreds of thousands of frustrated and restless cruise fans have lined up to be guinea pigs.

Jennifer Juenke is one of them.

“Ever since the C.D.C. shut down the cruise industry, we have been living through a complete nightmare,” said Ms. Juenke, one of more than 250,000 people who signed up for a test sailing with Royal Caribbean, a major cruise company. “It has been too long, and we are just raring to go.”

On Tuesday, Royal Caribbean became the first cruise line to receive approval from the C.D.C. to conduct simulated voyages, which are planned for its Freedom of the Seas ship starting from PortMiami in Florida in late June.

For some of the volunteers, it’s a way to offer support to the $150 billion industry, which has been decimated by the pandemic. For others it’s a chance to get a feel for what post-pandemic cruising will feel like. But for most who’ve raised their hands, it’s a way to sate their longing to get back on a boat after more than a year of being stuck onshore.

“The C.D.C. has been holding us all captive and I really can’t wait any longer, I can’t wait until July,” said Justin Marks, a 59-year-old retired Alabama resident, referring to one target date that has been floated for when ships might start sailing.

Mr. Marks, who has 12 cruises booked through 2022, is undeterred by the outbreaks onboard cruise ships at the start of the pandemic last year.

“I’m dying to be picked for the test cruise, mostly because I need to start cruising again for my sanity,” he said, “but also because I want to show the world how much safer a cruise ship is than any plane or hotel that has been allowed to operate throughout the whole pandemic.”

Exactly how the cruise lines will return to operations in the United States remains unclear. Earlier this month, the C.D.C. said it would allow cruise lines to skip test voyages if they attest that 98 percent of the crew and 95 percent of passengers on board a cruise are fully vaccinated.

Several major cruise companies have already announced Alaska sailings starting in late July, which will require all passengers to prove that they are vaccinated. But in Florida, the cruise lines’ biggest U.S. departure point, recently enacted state law bans businesses from requiring proof of immunizations from people seeking to use their services.

Florida officials have said they will not exempt the cruise lines. If cruise companies decide to sail with a mix of vaccinated and non-vaccinated passengers, they will have to carry out simulation cruises with volunteers to test health and safety protocols.

That has avid cruisers like Mark Zumo, 53, from Baton Rouge, La., eager to help out, even though, he said, he realizes the test cruises will not be like the real thing. (He had 20 cruises canceled during the pandemic and has already booked 25 between this August and December 2022.)

“A lot of people think it’s going to be a free holiday, but I realize that it won’t be,” he said. “It’s about testing Covid protocols and could mean being confined to your room for the entire cruise.”

“But I’m more than willing to do it,” he continued. “When you look at the devastation caused by the shutting down of the cruise industry, it reaches so far — from farmers to port workers to hotels and taxi cabs. I’ll do whatever I can to help get things running again.”

The simulated voyages must be between two to seven days in length with at least one overnight stay, according to C.D.C. guidelines. They are required to test embarkation and disembarkation procedures, medical evacuations, onboard activities such as meal service and entertainment, recreational activities like fitness classes and swimming, and shore excursions.

All volunteers will be issued with a written notice advising them about the risks of participating in health and safety protocols that are unproved and untested in the United States.

Most of the simulation cruise volunteers said they are fully vaccinated and do not have safety concerns about testing out health protocols for upcoming voyages. More than 66,000 people joined Royal Caribbean’s Facebook group “Volunteers of the Seas” to express interest in the initiative. “I feel safer on a cruise ship than I do in my grocery store,” Ms. Juenke said. “Cruises have restarted in Europe and it’s going fine.”

MSC, a global cruise line based in Geneva, Switzerland, was the first major cruise company to resume international sailings in Europe, which it started last August. It has relied on a stringent testing and contact tracing program to avoid large Covid outbreaks like the one on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan last year where 700 people became infected with the disease and 14 people died.

“At the beginning we must appreciate that no one knew anything about the virus and how it behaved and was transmitted,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, the executive chairman of MSC Cruises and global chair of the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the industry’s trade group.

“We have come so far from that moment in terms of scientific knowledge and technology,” he said.

On MSC European cruises, all guests receive antigen tests when they board and if they test positive, they are given an additional PCR test. Non-vaccinated guests boarding its cruises in Britain must also present proof of a PCR test taken 48 hours before they embark. Passengers are also tested mid-cruise after three or four days and are required to wear contact tracing bracelets so that they can be tracked down if someone they have come into contact with tests positive.

All passengers who test positive while on board are isolated until the ship returns to the port of embarkation or have the option to disembark at the next port of call if they need urgent medical attention. MSC said it had identified a handful of positive cases on board its ships since resuming operations last year, which were handled swiftly and effectively, but declined to provide the exact number of cases.

On Monday, four crew members on board Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas, tested positive for Covid-19 en route to the United States from Israel. The ship was not carrying passengers and the crew members were immediately isolated before disembarking in Spain, Royal Caribbean said.

Mr. Vago views MSC’s protocols — which run to 700 pages — as a model for the industry and after participating in a recent technical round table discussion between the C.D.C. and cruise industry representatives in Washington, he said he is optimistic that U.S. cruises will begin again this summer.

“People have been really affected psychologically by this pandemic and we understand how important and urgent it is for them to be able to get back out there and see a sunset and mingle,” Mr. Vago said.

After receiving brain surgery last year and working night shifts as a surgery technician at a hospital, Cristie Nino, of Salinas, Calif., said she is ready to volunteer on a test cruise.

“I think I would be the perfect person to go on one of these test cruises because I’m not scared,” she said. “I’ve been on the Covid floor, I’ve seen Covid patients, I’ve been through the toughest part.”

Cruise ships, she said, “have always been a cesspool for viruses, like planes, and I think there were risks at the height of the pandemic, but now with vaccines and health and safety measures I think they are ready to go again.”

Mr Edwards said Str8 Mental started almost a year ago and emerged from the impact the pandemic had on the black community. “We created this to give the guys a chance to come in and start unpacking,” he said. “I think the conversations about therapy and therapists in the black community have become more and more frequent in recent years.” At least 700 men took part, he said.

Georgia’s Election Legislation, and Why Turnout Isn’t Simple to Flip Off

A simple answer is that convenience isn’t as important as is often thought. Almost anyone who cares enough about voting will face the inconvenience of personal voting, whether because the inconvenience is not really that great or because they worry enough to suffer it.

This, of course, requires a degree of convenience: six-hour lines would change the calculation for many voters. Indeed, long lines affect voter turnout. A certain amount of interest is also assumed. Someone might think: there is no way I am waiting in line for half an hour to vote for the dog catcher. Similarly, as the importance of a race declines, the importance of a convenient set-up option is likely to grow.

The implication, however, is that if enough convenient options are available, almost anyone can vote, even if the most preferred option does not exist. That makes the Georgian electoral law’s efforts to stem long lines potentially quite significant. Not only could this mitigate the already limited effect of restricting email reconciliation, but even outweigh it.

Another reason is that convenience voting may not be as convenient for lower turnout voters who essentially decide the overall turnout. Low turnout voters are unlikely to think about how they will vote a month before the election if they have to request a postal vote. Someone to think about it is likely a high turnout voter. Low turnout voters may not know who they will be supporting until election day. And that makes them less likely to use pre-voting options like a no-excuse early vote, which requires them to think about the choice early and often: submit a motion, fill out a ballot, and send it back.

As a result, convenience voting methods tend to reinforce socio-economic biases in favor of voters with high turnout. The methods ensure that every highly interesting voter has many choices without doing quite so much to attract less engaged voters to the election.

A final reason is that electoral restrictions can backfire by annoying and energizing democratic voters. For example, this law’s restrictions on the distribution of water in a line can do more to mobilize democrats than keep them from voting. A recent study even theorized that the Supreme Court’s decision to withdraw elements of the electoral law did not reduce black voter turnout as subsequent efforts to restrict voting were quickly thwarted by efforts to mobilize black voters.

This does not mean that Georgian law or other so-called voter suppression laws have no consequences. Many make voting difficult enough to intimidate or discourage some voters. Many eligible voters are completely disenfranchised, even if only in small numbers. Perhaps the disenfranchisement of a single voter deserves outrage and opposition, especially when the law is passed for dubious or even contrived reasons and the mass disenfranchisement of Jim Crow serves as a historical backdrop.

But while the disruption has become a talking point for the nation, more fundamental factors affecting Canada’s strategic decisions and manufacturing realities have always resulted in the launch of vaccinations being a test run rather than a full rollout.

Even if Canada is back on schedule, this nation is expected to receive just six million doses of 37.5 million people by the end of next month. So far, only about 1.5 million people have been injected.

Updates to a global vaccination ranking now get almost as much media coverage as hockey results. With the UK and even the United States continuing to climb the rankings despite their troubles, Canada has fallen significantly on the list that sits between Bangladesh and Romania this week.

The country’s vaccination fears have caused a drop in approval ratings for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s performance during the pandemic, according to polls. Almost 60 percent of Canadians believe the country should do better or at least as well as other developed nations, according to a survey.

It has also sometimes sparked fierce criticism from the conservative opposition in parliament and from several provincial premieres whose governments are responsible for putting needles in weapons.

“While the world is vaccinating millions of times, the government can only deliver a few thousand,” Conservative leader Erin O’Toole said in parliament on Tuesday. “Where’s the plan to get vaccines into the arms of Canadians?”

Experts said the short or late deliveries shouldn’t have surprised anyone so far.

“There has never been a vaccine rollout that did not go into bottlenecks due to problems fixing manufacturing errors,” said Dr. Scott Halperin, Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax and Medical Director of the Canadian Center for Vaccination Science. “Anyone who didn’t anticipate hiccups in the manufacturing process just wasn’t aware of the past.”

Dr. David N. Fisman, professor of epidemiology at the University of Toronto’s Dalla Lana School of Public Health, attributed the national hand pressing to another factor.

“It looks more like we got what we expected with the occasional hiccup,” he said. “I think most of the sound and anger really just relates to the political scoring. Is there anything the federal government could realistically have done to get more vaccines earlier and magically stop those hiccups? “

Brian Pallister, the Prime Minister of Manitoba, broke with that program last week, announcing that his province will be spending $ 36 million Canadian dollars to buy vaccines from a small business in Calgary, Alberta that is powered by the development of a vaccine for cancer has switched to the coronavirus.

Cement giants flip to inexperienced hydrogen, carbon seize to curb emissions

A subsidiary of the multinational building materials company HeidelbergCement is working with researchers from Swansea University to install and operate a demonstration unit for green hydrogen at a location in the UK

The collaboration is another example of how companies involved in energy-intensive processes are looking for ways to maintain productivity while reducing emissions.

In a statement last week, Swansea University said the green hydrogen unit, housed in a converted shipping container, has been installed at Hanson UK’s Regen GGBS facility in the town of Port Talbot, South Wales.

The term GGBS refers to ground granulated blast furnace slag that can be used in place of cement in concrete production.

The effects of cement production on the environment are significant. According to a 2018 report by the British think tank Chatham House, over 4 billion tons of cement are produced annually. According to the political institute, this corresponded to around 8% of global CO2 emissions.

Regen GGBS, while having a smaller carbon footprint than Portland cement, remains an energy-intensive product that requires significant amounts of electricity and natural gas.

According to Swansea University, the idea behind the Port Talbot project is “to replace some of the natural gas used in the facility with green hydrogen, which is considered a clean source of energy as it only gives off water when burned”.

The facility at the Hanson UK site produces hydrogen through electrolysis, which splits water into oxygen and hydrogen.

When the electricity comes from renewable sources – the project in Wales uses on-site wind and solar panels – the end product is called “green hydrogen”.

The system was put together as part of the Industrial Carbon Emission Reduction initiative led by the Energy Safety Research Institute at Swansea University.

In a statement, Charlie Dunnill, a lecturer at ESRI, described cement making as “one of the most energy and carbon intensive industries, and therefore a perfect place to have an impact on carbon reduction”.

Last week, the world’s largest cement company, LafargeHolcim, also announced that it would be part of a collaboration to “explore” the development of carbon capture and storage solutions.

In a statement, the company said it will “study the feasibility of carbon capture” at two facilities, one in Europe and one in North America, using Schlumberger New Energy’s carbon sequestration technology.

The United States Geological Survey describes carbon sequestration as “the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide”. Carbon capture can occur naturally – for example through forests – or through man-made systems developed by humans.

Cement making is just an industrial process that can be significantly improved in terms of emissions and other sustainability metrics.

The production of aluminum is different. BMW recently announced that it has started sourcing and using aluminum, made using solar power, for example.

In an interview with CNBC’s “Street Signs Europe” last Friday, the CFO of aluminum manufacturer Hydro spoke about the market for more sustainable offers.

“We are seeing a demand for our specific products, Hydro REDUXA and Hydro CIRCAL, which are low carbon or recycled … and really pick up again,” said Pal Kildemo.

“And we can charge a premium for these products compared to other ‘more normal’ products.”

New York to show Citi Subject into ‘mega’ Covid vaccination web site: Mayor

New York will turn Citi Field into a 24/7 mega coronavirus vaccination site by the end of January to vaccinate thousands of residents every day, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Tuesday.

NYC Health and Hospitals will operate the New York Mets site with the goal of taking between 5,000 and 7,000 admissions daily, de Blasio said in a joint announcement with Mets owner Steve Cohen.

The announcement comes a day after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that his city will set up a vaccination site at Dodger Stadium by the end of this week. This facility can fire up to 12,000 shots a day, according to a statement from Garcetti’s office on Monday.

“This will help so many people get vaccinated,” de Blasio said during a press conference. “We welcome all New Yorkers. We even welcome Yankees fans. There is no discrimination.”

New York City Mayor has urged Governor Andrew Cuomo to increase the number of people who would be eligible for a coronavirus vaccine, beyond the priority healthcare workers. Cuomo granted the city’s request last week, saying that people age 75 and older, as well as key workers such as first responders, teachers, school staff and others across the state could be vaccinated against the disease starting this week.

As of Tuesday, the state will open Covid-19 vaccinations to all over 65s as well as to younger people with compromised immune systems, the Democratic governor said during a conversation with reporters on Tuesday morning.

However, it seems that so far the problem has not found a place for people to be vaccinated – it has ensured the supply of the doses. According to Cuomo, the newly expanded federal guidelines apply to about 7 million people, but the state only receives about 300,000 doses per week.

“I ask for your patience, as there are unfortunately far more eligible New Yorkers than vaccines from the federal government,” Cuomo said in a tweet on Tuesday.

De Blasio said the city had 26,000 vaccinations on Monday. At that rate, the city will run out of vaccines in less than two weeks, he said.

“We’re going to need the doses to keep this kind of effort going,” he said.
