Negative Coronavirus Test Required For Travelers Entering U.S.

Under a CDC regulation, airlines must comply with these rules in order to be allowed to disembark passengers in the United States.

The CDC dictates that negative results must come from a test that can detect persistent infection by ingesting parts of the pathogen itself. Two types of tests fall into this category: molecular tests (including PCR tests) and antigen tests. (Antibody tests that can only tell if someone has been infected in the past don’t count.)

Molecular tests look for segments of the genetic material or RNA of the virus. The most common molecular tests are based on a proven technique called the polymerase chain reaction or PCR – a gold standard in diagnosing infectious diseases. PCR testing can be expensive, and because samples must be passed through laboratories, it can take a few days for results to be returned. Experts say it is a good idea to plan ahead if you decide to take this type of test.

There are some rapid molecular tests that can be done in a doctor’s office from start to finish in a matter of minutes. That includes Abbott’s ID Now test. They’re considered less accurate than PCR-based tests, but get faster responses.

Antigen tests look for pieces of coronavirus proteins or antigens. They’re usually less accurate than molecular tests and have a harder time finding the virus when it’s scarce. However, most antigen tests can be done very quickly and cheaply, with results taking only a few minutes.

Certain antigen tests are only released for people with symptoms and may be more likely to provide inaccurate results when used to screen people who are feeling healthy.

Depending on the country travelers are leaving from, certain tests may not be available – and as a result, these new rules are likely to make it significantly more difficult to travel to the United States. Tests are usually offered through health care providers or community test centers, which can be set up through tourism offices and local health care providers. Some airports, such as Heathrow in London, offer on-site coronavirus testing. Some airlines like American, Jet Blue and United offer their customers in certain countries to arrange tests. For example, Delta has worked with the Mayo Clinic and national health authorities in several countries to simplify the testing and travel process.

The head of the Federal Aviation Administration said Saturday that travelers will face grave consequences for unruly behavior on airplanes. This is a stern warning following multiple incidents on board last week with pro-Trump chanting and passengers refusing to wear masks requesting to fly on U.S. airlines.

“The FAA will take tough enforcement action against anyone who threatens the safety of a flight. Penalties range from fines to imprisonment,” FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said in a statement.

Unruly passengers can face fines of up to $ 35,000.

Alaska Airlines said Friday it banned 14 passengers on a flight from Washington DC to Seattle. The travelers “were not mask-conforming, vocal, argumentative and harassed our crew members. Their behavior was unacceptable,” said Ray Lane, spokesman for Alaska Airlines. “We apologize to our other guests who felt uncomfortable on the flight.

Videos of multiple incidents were shared on social media. An American Airlines pilot on a Washington-to-Phoenix flight warned travelers that he would “park this plane and drop people off in the middle of Kansas” in order to convince passengers to “behave” on board.

“At American, we take our customers’ safety seriously and value the trust they place in our team to look after them throughout their journey,” American said in a statement. The pilot made an announcement emphasizing the importance of following the instructions of the crew members and complying with the mandatory guidelines on face covering. “

Earlier this week, some passengers sang “traitors” on a Delta Air Lines flight with Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. Delta said his “crew got involved quickly and solved the problem”.

On another flight this week, American Airlines flight attendants turned on the lights and ordered passengers to take their seats after passengers yelled at and cursed each other. This comes from a video shared by Twitter user @MaranieRae who said she was on the flight.

“I expect all passengers to follow the instructions of the crew members for their safety and the safety of the flight,” said Dickson. “The FAA monitors and tracks all commercial passenger flights in real time, and there are reporting mechanisms in place for crew members to identify any number of safety concerns that may arise in flight.”

Dickson said unruly behavior could distract crews and compromise crew members’ ability to perform safety-related duties.

Dickson’s testimony comes after flight attendant unions this week raised safety concerns over politically motivated flight disruptions after a pro-Trump mob stormed the U.S. Capitol and demanded that the presidential election results be overturned.

“The mob mentality behavior that occurred on multiple flights to the DC area yesterday was unacceptable and threatened the safety of every single person on board,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents approximately 50,000 flight attendants United, Alaska and more than a dozen other airlines said Wednesday.

The airlines had taken precautions and moved crews to airport hotels after the politically motivated uprising in the Capitol. American Airlines has stopped serving alcohol on flights to Washington DC.

“We should work harder to keep problems on the ground,” the AFA told flight attendants after the FAA warned on Saturday. “Make sure you strictly adhere to the masks before pushing back. Work as a crew, communicate, and bring your concerns to the flight deck and supervisors.”

The country’s largest flight attendant unions on Wednesday raised security concerns over politically motivated flight disruptions after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol and demanded that the presidential election results be overturned.

The union’s comments came after at least two disruptions on board flights to Washington, DC, including a Delta Air Lines flight with Utah Republican Senator Mitt Romney that saw some passengers singing “traitors.” Delta said it was aware of the incident and that “our crew quickly resolved and resolved the problem”. A spokeswoman for the senator did not comment.

“We cannot allow history to repeat itself with this new variant,” Mr Cuomo wrote on Twitter.

Also on Thursday, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said that passengers arriving at Newark Airport would require negative tests within 72 hours of departure to enter.

American travel requirements are less draconian than those of other countries in Europe and Asia, which excluded all travelers from the UK after the advent of the new coronavirus variant. Experts are skeptical that travel bans can stop the spread of the variant. Dr. Anthony S. The move comes as a new highly transmissible variant of the virus, which first appeared in the UK, has led countries to seal their borders to travelers from there.

The new rule, which goes into effect on Monday, applies to both Americans and foreign nationals and requires passengers to provide evidence of a negative result in a genetic test known as a PCR or antigen test.

“This additional test requirement will strengthen our protection of the American public to improve their health and safety and to ensure responsible international travel,” the CDC said in a statement.

Passengers are required to provide the airline with “written documentation of their laboratory test result (in print or electronic form),” the CDC said, adding, “If a passenger does not take a test, the airline must refuse to board the passenger.”

The new rules were a reversal for the Trump administration, which initially told American airliners that the government would not require testing for travelers from the UK.

United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and Delta Air Lines had already announced similar guidelines requiring all passengers on their flights between the UK and the United States to provide evidence of a negative test result within 72 hours of departure. British Airways also requested negative test results for passengers arriving in New York.

Several of the airlines announced their policies after New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo requested that passengers coming from London to John F. Kennedy International Airport must document a negative test result.

A recent study by British scientists found no evidence that the variant was more lethal than others. However, the researchers estimated that it was 56 percent more contagious. The country also announced a travel ban from South Africa after Health Secretary Matt Hancock said two people were discovered with another variant that had surfaced in the African country. Another variant has also appeared in Nigeria.

The UK authorities this week put much of England under renewed restrictions on travel and socializing, warning that schools and universities may have to close soon.
