Turner Classic Movies will get a facelift from Wednesday. TCM executives and talents say the overall mission will stay the same and that this latest update is an aesthetic one that is meant to help keep the cable channel relevant and reach a wider audience.

While preserving and celebrating the past, TCM also thinks about its future. In an era increasingly dominated by streaming television, how can it continue to thrive as a linear cable channel and transfer its experience to other platforms? How can TCM, owned by WarnerMedia, add to that company’s own HBO Max streaming service without being swallowed up?

At the same time, TCM does not want to alienate its existing audience, which appreciates the curation of films and their commentary. And as TCM is rebranding, it realizes that even cosmetic changes can seem like harbingers of fundamental changes in philosophy.

Pola Changnon, a veteran TCM executive who became general manager in January 2020, said she and her colleagues had been thinking about updating the channel for several months.

The redesign, introduced on Wednesday, features a light palette that is supposed to be reminiscent of the Technicolor logo. The TCM logo has a new font and an animated letter C on the screen that takes on various shapes and sizes before resting in a shape that resembles a camera lens or a movie running through a projector.

A new advertising campaign and slogan, “Where Then Meets Now” will highlight the connections that TCM seeks to make with its program to appeal to Cinephiles while inviting newcomers. While other channels and streaming sites can offer large film libraries, TCM was characterized by “the ability to bring curation and context into these films – why they are still resonating today, why they are important”.

That cultural shift was accelerated by the advent of HBO Max, which debuted in May 2020 and has since become a pivotal stage for WarnerMedia’s films and television programming. On this page, TCM only exists as one of several hubs with a library of several hundred films. While he and his colleagues are looking for new ways for TCM to use HBO Max, Ascheim pointed to this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival, which took place in May as a virtual event entirely on TCM and HBO Max, as proof that the two platforms can coexist and complement each other.

“Companies are watching the data very carefully,” Archambeau said. “What I’m seeing is they’re trying to remain flexible, creating the optionality for employees to come back to work but still watching the numbers and how the rates are going.”

Archambeau’s remarks come as major companies try to figure out how to safely return to the office.

Few companies are mandating employees to be fully vaccinated before returning to the office, Archambeau said. Instead, she said companies are strongly encouraging and trying to make it easier for employees to get vaccinated, even making it voluntary to return to the office and encouraging mask-wearing and physical distancing protocols for unvaccinated workers.

According to a survey conducted in April by Arizona State University with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, more than 60% of companies in the U.S. will require proof of vaccination from their employees while 44% will require all employees to get vaccinated and 31% will encourage vaccinations.

Archambeau, a strategic advisor to the president of ASU, said that peer pressure will soon begin to play a bigger role in pushing employees to get vaccinated.

More employees may also return to the office when children get vaccinated, allowing them to continually go to school, participate in in-person activities and rely on child-care services.

“I think as time goes through, companies are absolutely strongly encouraging employees to be vaccinated,” Archambeau said. “The way in which they’ll be able to work, the kinds of roles they’ll be able to play, I think, in time will be affected by whether they’re vaccinated or not. … People will want to be vaccinated in order to actually do well within the company.”

“They tested positive and even died from the virus,” he said. “Why talk about human rights now?”

On Friday, Miaoli County reported 26 new infections, mostly among migrant workers, bringing the total number of confirmed cases related to the factories to more than 450, according to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control. More than 300 packages were found at the hardest hit company, King Yuan Electronics, a semiconductor chip testing and packaging company.

Some workers said they understood the reasons for the restrictions, but argued that they were selecting foreign workers. Taiwanese workers, most of whom work as managers and supervisors in the factories, were allowed to come and go as they pleased, many foreign workers said.

“This is discrimination,” said John Ray Tallud, 29, a Filipino equipment engineer with King Yuan Electronics, in a telephone interview from his dormitory. “Local Taiwanese can go outside anytime.”

Throughout the pandemic, migrant workers were among the most vulnerable groups in the world. Singapore banned hundreds of thousands of low-paid foreign workers from leaving their dormitories for months after the major outbreaks last year. Rural laborers in the United States were considered indispensable and continued to work shoulder to shoulder in the fields, although many became infected.

Until recently, Taiwan was an exception – a covid-free island for most of the pandemic, with tight border controls making it difficult for companies to accept more migrant workers. Paiz-Bourque does not argue that their goal is to produce the best experience as no online show can duplicate a live show. “We gave up emulating the live experience and the more we gave up, the more we started to open barrels of creativity,” she said.

If at all, she wants to break away from the dependence on conventional stand-up and book big names at the same time.
