Kareem Abdul-Jabbar needs sports activities stars to advertise Covid vaccinations

Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Basketball Hall said it supports teams and players who use their platforms to promote Covid-19 vaccinations.

The former National Basketball Association star joined CNBC’s “Closing Bell” on Monday and discussed vaccination. Abdul-Jabbar announced that he received his vaccination shots this month and that the league should raise awareness to slow down Covid-19 infections.

“From what I’ve seen, the vaccination is much less bad than the virus,” said Abdul-Jabbar. “So we have to vaccinate as many people as possible. And I hope that every effort in this direction will be fruitful.”

President Joe Biden is committed to delivering 100 million Covid-19 vaccine shots within his first 100 days. Abdul-Jabbar mentioned the importance of the black community to get vaccinated, but acknowledged the story of the Tuskegee experiment for suspicion of vaccination among blacks.

The event dates back to 1932 in Tuskegee, Alabama, when black men were given placebos to treat syphilis. In 1972 the Associated Press reported that the federal government allowed men to go untreated for over 40 years because penicillin was found to be the treatment for the disease in 1947.

“That put a terrible strain on the problem of trust with the black community,” said Abdul-Jabbar of the experiment. “We have to overcome that, and we have to overcome this moment. The more people that can come on board with the promotion of vaccinations, the more this will definitely change and put this in a positive light.”

In a poll conducted by Pew Research in November, only 42% of blacks polled said they were planning to get a vaccination, compared with more than 60% of Americans overall.

The NBA released its latest Covid-19 report on January 20, which tested 11 new players positive. Abdul-Jabbar urged players to make public announcements about vaccinations. When asked whether athletes should have special access to vaccinations, Abdul-Jabbar said no.

“I don’t think you can get people out of line, so to speak, so that sports stars come out on top,” said Abdul-Jabbar. “But anyone with a following in our country can do a great job of getting people to understand that they need to be vaccinated ASAP. And I don’t think there is a problem with that.”

NBC Sports activities Community will stop operations in 2021

The NBC Sports Network will be closed.

The network will cease operations through the end of 2021, a person familiar with the CNBC’s familiar plan. NBC will transfer its sports media rights, including the National Hockey League, to USA Network. The person spoke to CNBC on condition of anonymity as the person is not allowed to comment publicly on the matter. Both networks are owned by CNBC’s parent company NBCUniversal.

The plan to cease operations will allow NBC to gain more coverage for its sports content. The USA network is available in 86 million households, while NBCSN has an estimated reach of 80 million households.

NBCUniversal initially hoped that NBC Sports Network would be its answer to Disney’s ESPN – a cable sports network that could justify high fees from pay-TV retailers for its popular sports content. Twenty-first Century Fox developed Fox Sports 1 and CBS introduced CBS Sports Network for similar reasons.

But none of the cable sports networks has ever seriously threatened ESPN, and the media industry’s move to streaming video has made linear sports networks anachronistic. NBCUniversal is considering shutting down multiple networks, CNBC reported in October, in an attempt to consolidate its best assets into fewer networks. By shutting down poorly performing cable networks, older media companies could keep the shrinking bundle of cables afloat while maintaining subscription income by increasing the fees for the existing networks.

The network began as the Outdoor Life Network in the 1990s and was renamed Versus in 2006. Comcast owned the network when it acquired NBCUniversal in 2011, at which time it was renamed NBC Sports Network.

NHL playoff games, a selection of NASCAR races and Premier League content will be broadcast to USA Network upon completion of NBCSN.

The Stamford, Connecticut-based network acquired the NHL rights in 2011 with a 10-year package worth $ 2 billion. The agreement runs for the current 2020-21 season.

NBCSN also has a $ 4.4 billion rights package with NASCAR that expires in 2024 and has the prospect of its extension option with rights to the European Football Premier League (valued at around $ 1 billion). The network moved some of those games to NBC’s streaming service, Peacock, last year.

Back to the Future

Longtime sports media rights advisor Lee Berke said the move was “back to the future” for the USA Network, which broadcasts sports content. The channel was originally a national distribution arm for the Madison Square Garden Sports Network and broadcast sports content including the National Basketball Association until 1984.

“The fact that the sport is returning to the US is not a new concept,” Berke said in an interview with CNBC on Friday. “Certainly the distribution helps, but this move reflects some things – the pay-TV package is shrinking. The subscriber base is shrinking. So it justifies having fewer networks on air and the other part of that is the growth of streaming.”

Berke, the CEO of LHB Sports, a sports consultancy, said streaming trends are forcing the network to reinvent itself “when consumer viewing behavior changes. This has been a migration of sport from broadcast to cable in the past 20 years , 30 years ago, when pay-TV got bigger and bigger, and now you’re seeing sports that are moving to streaming.

“I think it’s a sensible move given current trends,” said Berke of NBCSN’s closure. “They try to always be one step ahead of the wave. They don’t want to stand behind it and miss it. But that makes sense, given where the pay-TV is going and where the streaming is going.”

NBC Sports activities Community Will Shut Right down to Bolster Peacock Streaming Service

But the future of television is streaming, and Comcast is determined not to be left behind.

Comcast has shifted its strategy in the past few years to focus on its growing broadband internet business and launched Peacock as part of that effort. The ad-supported service, which is free but includes a paid tier, has attracted at least 22 million subscribers and now surpasses Comcast’s more traditional cable video business of 19 million subscribers.

NBCUniversal has already moved most of its Premier League broadcasts to Peacock, and adding more sports could give the company more leverage in negotiating bundling contracts with other broadband services.

The decision will have a significant impact on a number of upcoming legal negotiations.

For the past decade, NBCUniversal has paid an average of $ 200 million a year to be the only national NHL broadcaster in the US, with most of these games appearing on NBCSN. However, that deal expires after this season, and NBC’s agreement with the English Premier League expires a year later, in 2022.

A question that is likely to surface in future negotiations is whether NBCUniversal can find enough airtime on the NBC and USA networks to provide enough games for these leagues and others on traditional television – which retains the greatest reach – or whether the leagues The virtues of Peacock, which is still a relatively niche streaming service, can be resold.

Peacock is available to Comcast customers free of charge, but the company makes it available to other broadband providers as well. Most cable operators like Charter and Cox are now relying on the broadband business to grow and have bundled streaming services like Netflix into their internet packages. In this arrangement, the cable operators collect a fee from the streaming platforms.

For the past two decades, television broadcasters have required cable sports channels to act as a repository for the overflow of game broadcasts to which they have the rights. ESPN broadcasts so many games that there are now nine cable channels to show them all. However, a streaming service can display an infinite number of games at the same time, eliminating the primary uses of cable sports channels.

While entertainment programs shifted to streaming services in droves, the sport lagged, with the biggest leagues and events still being seen on traditional network television, but most of the games being played over cable. Only the smallest leagues have most of their programming available on streaming platforms – which makes them perhaps the most forward-looking.
