Cryptocurrency poses a major danger of tax evasion

Crypto tax evasion

But how does cryptocurrency lead to tax evasion?

According to tax experts, it largely comes down to lax reporting requirements.

The IRS may not be able to track crypto earnings or transactions if they are not reported by exchanges, corporations, and other third parties. And that means the income may not be taxed.

“Nobody has set clear rules about it, so a lot is not reported,” said Jon Feldhammer, partner at law firm Baker Botts and former senior litigator at the IRS.

“Every time you create a path of non-reporting, you create an opportunity to capitalize on tax fraud in incomprehensible or much elusive ways,” he said.

Crypto is fast becoming an alternative to cash as more and more merchants accept Bitcoin and other virtual currencies as a means of payment. However, cash is more regulated.

For example, a company that receives more than $ 10,000 in cash from a customer must file a currency transaction report. This can happen when a consumer buys a car for more than $ 10,000 in cash, when someone wins big at the casino, or when a bank receives a large cash deposit.

These reports tell the government that a buyer has a lot of money that may or may not be reported on a tax return.

However, the same rules don’t apply to crypto. A used car company that receives $ 20,000 worth of Bitcoin from a customer does not need to file a report of currency transactions. This income can also remain untaxed if it is not reported on the business owner’s tax return, Feldhammer said.

“Although cryptocurrency transactions are a relatively small part of business income today, they are likely to grow in importance over the next decade, especially given a broad system of reporting financial accounts,” the financial report said.

Additionally, virtual currencies do not have to be bought or sold through an exchange, making these transactions more opaque to government officials.

About 80% of the “tax gap” in the US is due to underreported income, according to the Treasury Department, especially the wealthy who hide income in opaque structures.

Stricter reporting standards – including “full reporting” for cryptocurrency – are among the most effective ways to improve tax compliance.

Biden’s tax agenda would treat crypto transactions like cash and require companies to report if they received more than $ 10,000 in virtual currency.

Financial institutions, payment processing companies and stock exchanges and custodians for digital assets would also have to report crypto transactions above a certain threshold, according to an analysis of the proposal published by the law firm Greenberg Traurig.

The IRS has already shown a greater interest in learning more about taxpayers’ crypto activities. The agency asked a question about cryptocurrency holdings on page 1 of the 2020 tax returns.

Biden’s compliance agenda would have to be passed by Congress. The overall plan would raise $ 700 billion in the first decade and an additional $ 1.6 trillion in the second decade, according to Treasury.

The White House would use these funds to fund action in the American Families Plan. This proposal includes additional funding for two years of free universal preschool, two years of free community college, heavily subsidized childcare for middle-class families, federal paid family vacations, and expanded child tax credits.

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden said in a call Wednesday morning with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he expected “a significant de-escalation today on the way to a ceasefire”.

During Wednesday’s call with Netanyahu, the fourth conversation since the violence broke out, Biden discussed the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip and Israel’s campaign to dismantle Hamas, according to the White House.

“The President has informed the Prime Minister that he is expecting significant de-escalation on the way to a ceasefire today,” the White House ad read.

The violence between militants from Israel and Hamas has been going on for more than a week. According to local authorities, Israeli strikes in Gaza have resulted in at least 219 Palestinian deaths. Israel has said more than 3,400 rockets bombed its cities. At least 12 people have died in Israel.

The latest round of fighting marked the worst outbreak of violence since the war between Israel and Hamas in 2014. On Tuesday, the European Union became the youngest international power to call for a ceasefire as the civilian death toll in Gaza rises.

“We have received over 60 calls from the President with senior leaders in Israel, the Palestinian Authority and other leaders in the region,” Karine Jean-Pierre, White House Assistant Secretary, told reporters aboard Air Force One.

“The president has been doing this for a long time, for decades, he believes this is the approach we need to take. He wants to make sure we end the violence and suffering we have seen for the Palestinian and Israeli people” said Jean -Pierre added.

When asked for further details of the call, Jean-Pierre said she would “let the formal ad” speak for itself “.

Biden, who is due to speak to the country’s newest Coast Guard officers on Wednesday, told Netanyahu earlier this week that the US was supporting a ceasefire in Gaza.

“The president reiterated his firm support for Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket attacks. The president welcomed efforts to crack down on inter-municipal violence and calm Jerusalem,” said a White House reading.

Biden also urged Israel to ensure the protection of innocent civilians during the conflict.

On Sunday, Israel went on strike that leveled several houses in the Gaza Strip. At least 42 people were killed in the deadliest strike to date in the ongoing conflict.

Netanyahu defended a punitive air strike on Saturday that collapsed a 12-story building filled with international media. Hamas used part of the building to plan terrorist attacks.

Semaglutide Brings Vital Weight Loss in Overweight Sufferers

For the first time, a drug has been shown to be so effective against obesity that patients can avoid many of its worst effects, including diabetes, researchers reported Wednesday.

Novo Nordisk’s drug Semaglutide is already marketed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. In a clinical study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago tested semaglutide at a much higher dose as an anti-obesity drug.

Nearly 2,000 participants in 129 centers in 16 countries injected semaglutide or a placebo weekly for 68 weeks. Those who received the drug lost an average of nearly 15 percent of their body weight, compared with 2.4 percent of those who received the placebo.

More than a third of the participants who received the drug lost more than 20 percent of their weight. Symptoms of diabetes and pre-diabetes improved in many patients.

These results far exceed the weight loss seen in clinical trials with other anti-obesity drugs, experts say. The drug is a “game changer,” said Dr. Robert F. Kushner, an obesity researcher at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, who led the study. “This marks the beginning of a new era of effective obesity treatments.”

Dr. Clifford Rosen of the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, who was not involved in the study, said, “I think it has great potential for weight loss.” The gastrointestinal symptoms among the participants were “really marginal – nothing like weight loss drugs in the past,” added Dr. Rosen, editor of the New England Journal of Medicine and co-author of an editorial that accompanied the study.

For decades, scientists have been looking for ways to help a growing number of people with obesity. Five obesity drugs currently available have side effects that limit their use. The most effective phentermine causes an average weight loss of 7.5 percent and can only be taken for a short time. After stopping, this amount of weight is also regained.

The most effective treatment to date is bariatric surgery, which allows people to lose an average of 25 to 30 percent of their body weight, noted Dr. Louis Aronne, an obesity researcher at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, who advises Novo Nordisk and studies semaglutide.

However, surgery is an invasive solution that permanently changes the digestive system. Only 1 percent of those who qualify do the procedure. Instead, most obese people try diet after diet with disappointing results.

The semaglutide study confirms what scientists already know, said Dr. Kushner: Willpower is not enough. In the new study, the participants who received the placebo and the diet and exercise counseling could not find any significant difference in weight.

In general, insurers have refused to pay for the weight loss drugs on the market. Semaglutide is likely to be expensive. The lower dose used to treat diabetes has an average retail price of nearly $ 1,000 per month. (Insurers usually pay for diabetes medication, Dr. Kushner noted.)

Dr. Caroline Apovian, co-director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a member of the Novo Nordisk advisory board, said semaglutide’s effectiveness is “phenomenal” and the trial results may lead insurers to cover it.

Semaglutide is a synthetic version of a naturally occurring hormone that acts on appetite centers in the brain and intestines, causing feelings of satiety. A high-dose regimen of the drug hasn’t been studied long enough to see if it has serious long-term effects.

And it is expected that patients will have to take it for a lifetime to prevent weight loss from returning.

Qiana Mosely, who lives in Chicago, has tried dieting and drugs for years to lose weight, but to no avail. Then Ms. Mosely took the semaglutide study and lost 40 pounds, about 15 percent of her weight.

Ms. Mosely did not know until recently whether she was receiving the drug or the placebo. Although she tried to eat well and exercise, her weight “dropped too quickly,” she said. “It had to be the drugs.”

She said she didn’t experience any side effects. But when the study ended and she stopped receiving the drug, the weight came back. “I was so sad,” she said. She will endeavor to resume taking the medicine as soon as it becomes available.

UK regulator warns these with historical past of serious allergic reactions

LONDON – People with a history of “significant” allergic reactions should not receive the coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, the UK Medicines Agency said on Wednesday.

The UK drug and health products regulator has updated its guidance to UK health care providers on who should get the vaccine after two members of the UK National Health Service had allergic reactions to the shot. Both are recovering well, according to the NHS national medical director.

“People with a history of significant allergic reaction to a vaccine, drug, or food (such as a history of anaphylactoid reaction or someone recommended to wear an adrenaline auto-injector) should not receive the Pfizer BioNtech vaccine received, “the regulator said.

Stephen Powis, national medical director for the NHS, said such a precaution was “common with new vaccines”.

The UK was the first country to approve and administer the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine. A massive vaccination campaign began on Tuesday that began in hospitals, with health and nursing home workers and those over 80 being vaccinated first.

Dr. June Raine, head of MHRA, told a UK government selection committee on Wednesday that the regulator would maintain “real-time vigilance” of the vaccine after its use.

“Last night we looked at two case reports of allergic reactions,” she said.

“We know from extensive clinical studies that this was not a feature. However, if we need to step up our advice after having this experience in vulnerable populations, the priority groups, we will get that advice on the spot immediately.”
