Is it safe to travel this summer or fall? Here’s what experts say

For some local travelers looking for a vacation, the question is not whether to book a vacation this year, but when.

The enthusiasm for travel is at its highest level in a year. According to a survey conducted last week by travel market research firm Destination Analysts, 87% of American travelers are expected to take a trip this summer.

But is summer the best time to go this year or is it advisable to wait? Doctors present various scenarios of how the rest of 2021 could develop.

1. A summer with low infection rates

Dr. Sharon Nachman, director of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, expects infection rates to be lower this summer than in winter.

“If I add the idea that children 12 and older also have access to vaccines this summer, the risk for families will continue to decrease, allowing more activity and less risk for everyone,” she said.

Dr. Anne Rimoin, professor of epidemiology at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, said there was “a real chance for a summer with much lower disease rates. But that means we must all pull ourselves together and do our best.” Part “through vaccination, wearing masks, social distancing and hand hygiene.

Vaccinations are important for a safe summer trip, said Dr. Anne Rimoin of UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, despite finding they are “no guarantees” against infection.

Whether it is safe to travel this summer depends on two factors: vaccinations and variants.

“It all depends on how many vaccines we get our arms about,” said Rimoin. “The variants are more contagious, so … those who aren’t vaccinated are more likely to get infected.”

2. A good summer and a mild autumn

Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Scott Gottlieb told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” in April that he expected US infection rates to be “really low” this summer, likely leading to a “relatively mild decline” will lead.

Things might change after that, he said.

“I think we should think about late winter,” he said. “I think the overall death and disease from Covid will hopefully be reduced, but there is a chance they could spread again.”

Gottlieb said Covid-19 will “move from a more pandemic to a seasonal burden this year”. However, that could change if variants develop that can “penetrate” a previous immunity or vaccine, although he noted that “that’s not on the horizon right now.”

“I don’t think we’re going to be having Christmas parties on December 20th in the back room of a crowded restaurant,” he said. “I think we have to do things differently when we come into winter.”

“But I think that will be a fact for a few years,” said Gottlieb.

3. Flares and outbursts

Dr. Charles Bailey, medical director of infection prevention at Providence St. Joseph Hospital and Providence Mission Hospital, doesn’t see this summer as a safe time to travel before infections return in the fall as he expects the outbreaks to continue year round.

He anticipates the majority of the United States will continue on its path to normal while the areas will experience “episodic flare-ups – local and regional” hotspots “- of Covid activity by late 2021 and early 2022.”

Mark Cameron, epidemiologist and associate professor in the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, does not see summer as a “window of opportunity for perfectly safe travel itself,” as he has concerns about last summer’s waves and the possibility of a variant Fuel has bursts.

He compared the current state of the pandemic to “watching the tick and drying an irregular clock pendulum”.

“The pandemic could cause the virus to circulate unpredictably and new variants could cause outbreaks or epidemics on a regular basis, especially if vaccine availability is low or vaccine hesitation is high, similar to what is happening now with the flu,” Cameron said .

“The moment we are in – with vaccination rates, variant spread and Covid-19 fatigue in competition – is vital to stop this virus and its growing penchant for evading our eradication efforts,” he said.

4. The chance of another summer climb

William Haseltine, former professor at Harvard Medical School and author of “Variants! The Shape-Shifting Challenge of COVID-19,” said there was a risk of another summer surge and summer travel would only make the problem worse.

“The more people choose to escape the very real pandemic stress and fatigue, the more we risk another spike in cases this summer,” he said.

Covid-19 is expected to become a seasonal disease at some point, but it is not known when this will occur.

Haseltine said many people hope that warm summer weather will lead to a decline in Covid cases due to the seasonality of other coronaviruses and influenza viruses.

But as it turns out, this virus is “far less seasonal than many expect,” he said. “If you look back on 2020 and the early part of 2021, you will find that, as expected, there have been falls and winter flare-ups, but also spring and summer flare-ups.”

While the virus that causes Covid-19 is expected to become seasonal at some point, the United Nations World Meteorological Organization has highlighted in a report that “there is no evidence” that this year will be different from 2020.

Dr. Supriya Narasimhan, chief infectious disease surgeon at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, agreed that another spike is possible in the summer, even in places where vaccines are being aggressively introduced.

She agreed that Covid is “less seasonal than the flu” and said the factors that will influence whether it will continue to rise are public adherence to masking, vaccine intake and variants.

“It’s a game of cat and mouse where the virus mutates. The only way to stop it is to stop transmission,” she said. “We might still hit a vaccine wall because people just don’t want to take it, even if it’s available.”

“I think we need more data to make travel decisions,” she said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend Covid-19 shots for pregnant women after preliminary data from the largest study of coronavirus vaccine use in expectant mothers showed that Pfizer and Moderna shocks were effective for both women and men are safe for their babies.

The researchers did not find “obvious safety signals” in any of the 35,691 women followed in the peer-reviewed study published Wednesday by the New England Journal of Medicine. The data used in the study were self-reported and the ages of the participants ranged from 16 to 54 years.

“No safety concerns for third trimester vaccinees or safety concerns for their babies were observed,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky on Friday. “Therefore, CDC recommends pregnant people to receive Covid-19 vaccines.”

Researchers used the V-Safe Post-Vaccination Health Checker monitoring system, the V-Safe Pregnancy Register, and the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System to characterize the initial safety of mRNA Covid-19 vaccines in pregnant women.

Pregnant women were more likely to report injection site pain than those who weren’t, but fewer other side effects such as headache, myalgia, chills, and fever. Of the 827 participants who completed their pregnancies, the miscarriage rates were the same as before the pandemic.

The results are preliminary and only cover the first 11 weeks of the US vaccine rollout from December 14th to February 28th.

Pregnant women are more likely to be hospitalized and have a higher risk of death if they become infected with Covid-19. According to CDC data, vaccination is particularly important for this population group. Pharmaceutical companies have not included pregnant women in early efficacy and safety studies, but recent studies suggest that the vaccines are safe for them.

The researchers said “more longitudinal research, including tracking large numbers of women who were vaccinated earlier in pregnancy, is needed to inform mother, pregnancy and child results.”

More than a year after the cruise lines came to a standstill due to Covid-19, there are clear signs that the cruise could make a comeback.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this month signaled that cruises can resume – with restrictions – until midsummer, which is welcomed by operators and cruise enthusiasts.

This follows months of increasing pressure from the industry to claim it has been treated unfairly due to coronavirus restrictions, leading Carnival to consider relocating ships and to sue Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Because government regulations and vaccinations vary around the world, seafarers still have to navigate a lot. CNBC’s Global Traveler took a look at what to expect from cruises in 2021.

Which cruises are sailing and where?

Currently, US port departures remain a no-go according to CDC guidelines, although a restart is required by July 1st. These include major cruise excursions to Alaska, where Governor Mike Dunleavy is threatening legal action.

However, the Caribbean has full speed ahead – as long as passengers depart from the islands.

Starting in June, Royal Caribbean will offer a number of routes in the region starting in the Bahamas and Sint Maarten. Crystal Cruises will start from the Bahamas in June, while Norwegian will start departing from Jamaica and the Dominican Republic in August.

Europe is also moving on.

Greece is the destination of choice for many operators. Norwegian and luxury liners Celebrity Cruises, Seaborn and Ponant are planning all routes with port calls around the Greek islands this summer. MSC Cruises will also be operating a number of itineraries across Europe starting in May, with calls to locations in Italy, Malta, France, Spain, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro.

Venice is part of MSC Cruises’ routes, although embarkation from the city’s historic port will soon be a thing of the past as Italian officials have indicated that cruise ships will be diverted to the nearby industrial port due to a new environmental regime.

However, some operators, including MSC Cruises, only serve passengers who live in the European Union’s Schengen Zone. International visitors should be aware of any restrictions on staying and entering the country of embarkation prior to booking.

In the meantime, the so-called “cruises to nowhere” are in full swing. As round trips without ports of call and mandatory tests before departure, they are considered a low-risk option for vacationers who want an escape.

Singapore’s no-destination vacation has proven so popular that the city-state’s cruisers made up a third of the industry’s total travelers last month. The leading operators Royal Caribbean and Genting extended their season until October.

Companies in Great Britain also come up with the idea. Starting in June, P&O, Princess Cruises, Disney, MSC Cruises, Virgin Voyages and Royal Caribbean will circling the British Isles – many of them with domestic port calls.

Which cruise ships require vaccinations?

Most cruises are only offered to vaccinated people.

In January, the British operator Saga Cruises was dismayed when it became the first cruise line to introduce mandatory vaccination. But now companies are recognizing this as the norm, said Tom McAlpin, CEO and President of Virgin Voyages, Richard Branson’s adult-only cruise line.

Many companies in the cruise industry support the requirement that passengers be vaccinated before they travel.

“We know this is the future,” said McAlpin. “As an adult-only cruise line, we can provide a tightly controlled and safe environment for everyone on board.”

Crystal Cruises, Norwegian, P&O, Viking and Celebrity Cruises have followed suit and introduced vaccine requirements for adult passengers. Royal Caribbean has made vaccines mandatory on some routes, including the Caribbean, while Carnival Cruises has yet to announce such measures.

What will the experience be like on board?

The focus on health and safety will also extend to the experience on board. Buffets are no longer offered and entertainment can be limited as cleanliness is paramount.

“While traditionally cleaning a ship would have been done in the background … the housekeeping theater will be of greater consumer interest and the hospitality brands will have their cleaning protocols front and center,” said Elle Kross, director of strategy at the Digital marketing company Movable Ink.

Vaccination requirements make family cruises difficult as children under the age of 16 are not yet eligible for vaccination.

In the meantime, passengers can expect new technologies, from virtual queuing and contactless payments to thermal temperature checks and UV disinfection, to reduce in-person contact on board.

“The operators have done a lot of work … leveraging modern technology, implementing new processes, and training employees to work with new policies and guidelines,” said Vijay Achanti, principal of hospitality for North America at global consulting firm Capgemini.

Who is on a cruise vacation?

With new measures and the announcement of additional routes, vacationers seem to be gaining confidence. Bookings are closed in 2021, and Crystal Cruises posted the largest booking day in its 30-year history last month.

The route looks even clearer. According to Google data analyzed by the travel site Trips to Discover, US cruise ticket sales for 2022 are well above 2019 sales for the 2020 season as travelers plan new and rescheduled trips.

The bulk of those bookings continue to come from regular cruisers, said Kross of Movable Ink. Carnival reported last month that 55% of its bookings for 2021 so far have come from “brand loyalists”. But newcomers are also starting to see cruises as a piece of “normality before Covid,” she said.

Still, many do so with caution, said Jeanie Johnson of tour operator Jeanie’s Journey in Minnesota, who found that most vacationers opt for suites and balcony staterooms.

“Although these cruisers are fully vaccinated and ready to go, they are just a bit cautious,” she continued. “You want to be able to reach out … just in case.”

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who advised cruise lines on Covid protocols, told CNBC on Friday that he believed a safe environment could be created on the ships.

Gottlieb’s comments came a day after Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis said the state had sued the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and demanded that the public health agency see cruise ships leave US ports immediately allowed to sail.

Gottlieb, co-chair of an advisory board for Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Royal Caribbean, told Squawk Box that companies have reasonable guidelines to prepare for when to cease operations after a Covid hiatus that is longer than longer allowed to record one year.

“They are committed to things like mandatory screening of passengers. Norwegian Cruise Line recently announced that they will require vaccination of all of their passengers,” said Gottlieb, who served as the US Food and Drug Administration representative from 2017-2019 – The state was active in the Trump Administration.

Gottlieb also noted that social distancing was possible on the ships, saying “these cruises will not be operated at full capacity.”

“When you start implementing all of these public health recommendations, you start creating an environment that could be pretty safe,” he explained. “I believe you can create a safe bubble around this experience, especially if you compare it to other vacation experiences where you have no control over the surroundings,” he added.

Cruise ships were a hotspot for Covid outbreaks in the early days of the global health crisis last year, leading the CDC to issue their no-sail order in mid-March 2020. While the CDC has issued some guidelines for cruise lines as part of its conditional sailing to help achieve this, the agency has not yet set a date when operators can resume voyage from U.S. ports.

In response to a request from CNBC to comment on Gottlieb’s comments, the CDC said via email that it “has an obligation to work with the cruise industry and seaport partners to continue the cruise on the phased approach set out in the conditional sailing order This goal is in line with the desire for resumption of passenger operations in the United States, expressed by many of the major cruise lines and travelers, hopefully by midsummer. “

However, the cruise industry is growing impatient after companies borrowed billions in debt and issued new shares to fund operations while sailing revenues dried up. Late last month, a trade group asked the CDC to allow a gradual restart in early July. Operators have stated that they are seeing strong demand for bookings, suggesting that people are starting to feel comfortable returning to cruises.

In a CNBC interview on Wednesday, Carnival CEO Arnold Donald pointed out differences between restrictions in America and other countries around the world where cruises have resumed in some locations.

“A person can fly from the US to another country today. Get on a cruise ship and then return to the US, regardless of whether they have been vaccinated or not,” Donald said at Closing Bell. “But here in the US at the time, even if you were vaccinated, you couldn’t get on a cruise ship.”

Donald commended the Biden government for their work in distributing Covid vaccinations in the US, where approximately 20% of the population is fully vaccinated. He believes the cruise industry and CDC can work together to reach an agreement on sailing.

“The government has made great strides on vaccinations and has taken command of this matter,” said Donald. “We are confident that we can work together and come up with something that would be a workable solution and hope we have some more sailing out of the US this summer.”

Richard Fain, CEO of Royal Caribbean, told CBS This Morning on Thursday that he would like the cruise industry to be treated “very much like the airlines” that have been allowed to fly. However, Fain is optimistic about the possible resumption of U.S. crossings in the second half of this year, citing President Joe Biden’s goal of getting society back to normal by July 4th.

The Royal Caribbean cruise line requires passengers and crew 18+ to be vaccinated to board their ships, as do Virgin Voyages, Crystal Cruises, and others. These companies will resume cruise operations in the spring and summer. Neither company has been operating cruises in United States ports to date, as the CDC has not yet given them the guidelines to follow.

Currently, airlines do not require vaccinations to travel. But the idea has been talked about a lot in the industry. In an interview with NBC Nightly News, Ed Bastian, Delta Air Lines’ chief executive officer, said that proof of vaccination will likely be required on international flights. However, it is unclear whether this is a paper certificate or a digital vaccination record.

Governor Andrew Cuomo last week announced the launch of Excelsior Pass, a free app that companies can use to scan a code to confirm whether someone has been vaccinated or tested negative for the coronavirus. To enroll, New York residents should visit the Excelsior Pass website, where they will be asked to enter their name, date of birth, and zip code. A passport – a QR code that companies can scan – is automatically generated using data from government vaccination records or test laboratory data.

Normandy, France

France has been the most visited country in the world for years. Travelers congregate in inland Paris, on the French Riviera in the south, and in the country’s world-famous wine regions, which are spread across the bottom two-thirds of the country.

But what about the north? Regions along the English Channel such as Normandy receive a small fraction of French tourists, making them ideal for travelers wanting to experience the country and avoid large groups.

Although Normandy is relatively calm, the Mont Saint-Michel, a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey less than a mile from mainland France, is packed with people.

Normandy is popular with World War II history buffs who tour the iconic D-Day beach invasion sites, as well as their cemeteries and monuments. Others are drawn to the beach towns of Deauville and Trouville, the cobblestone streets of Honfleur, and the majestic tidal island of Mont Saint-Michel.

As in much of France, the food is another draw. Normandy is famous for Camembert cheese, Calvados liqueur and Tarte aux Pommes (apple tarts).

The “other” islands of Greece

According to the World Bank, Greece received around 10 million tourists a year in the mid-1990s. By 2019 that number had more than tripled.

According to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers, five regions accounted for 88% of all overnight stays in 2017, namely the South Aegean, Crete, the Ionian Islands, Central Macedonia and Attica. Makis Bitzios, general manager of the Greek tourism consultancy Remake, said that tourists are highly concentrated in the most popular Greek islands and many others have far fewer tourists, including Iraklia in the Cyclades archipelago and Lipsi in the Dodecanese.

“Both islands are very beautiful, without the crowds, very authentic and not as well known as many other Greek travel destinations,” he said.

Central Vietnam

Many international tourists to Vietnam travel north to Hanoi and Halong Bay or south to Ho Chi Minh City.

Those who venture into the center usually head to Hoi An Old Town, the dazzling hotels outside Da Nang, or the historic sites of Hue and My Son.

A few years ago, a small number of resorts were betting that travelers would be drawn to the more sleepy parts of Vietnam.

Anantara, a luxury brand from the Minor Hotels Group, was one of them. It opened the Anantara Quy Nhon Villas in 2018 as the first international five-star hotel in a part of Vietnam that received few international visitors.

The resort has 26 ocean view villas, each with ocean views and private pools.

The brand opened another location, Anantara Mui Ne, four hours east of Ho Chi Minh City.

“Both Anantara Quy Nhon Villas and Anantara Mui Ne are in remote areas and in their own gated locations that offer peaceful experiences but are close to local locations,” said Pieter van der Hoeven, Regional General Manager of the CNBC brand Global Traveler by email.

Another inland attraction is the colossal Son Doong Cave. First explored in 2009, only 1,000 travelers are allowed to explore each year. This is a limit to protect the cave, which is considered to be one of the largest and most magnificent in the world.

Kagawa, Japan

Not to be confused with Kanagawa, the popular coastal prefecture south of Tokyo. Kagawa is Japan’s smallest prefecture by geographic size. At about 724 square miles, it’s about two and a half times larger than New York City, yet is home to less than 1 million people.

Kagawa is located on Shikoku Island and receives a small number of Japanese tourists. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, fewer than 550,000 of the nearly 32 million international tourists to Japan went to Kagawa in 2019.

Travelers looking to tour feudal castles, temples and gardens and want to eat udon – the famous dish is closely linked to the prefecture where the noodles are made from locally grown wheat – can check out the village of Urashima.

Urashima Village is a secluded inn with three private buildings (one of which is called “Silence”) overlooking the uninhabited Maruyama Island.

The small luxury inn opened in January and offers guests the chance to work in peace, kayak in the sea and explore the country by bike.

The inn, manned by a concierge team and a private chef, overlooks the uninhabited island of Maruyama, which the hotel’s website says guests can enter twice a day if an “underwater lane” emerges at low tide.

Dandenongs, Australia

While Melbourne receives the lion’s share of awards (and tourists) for the Australian state of Victoria, there are numerous destinations outside of the city that deserve recognition.

One such place is the Dandenongs, a serene mountain range of bucolic bed and breakfasts, forest gardens, and family-owned restaurants.

Less than an hour from Melbourne, the Dandenongs Ranges are a mountainous area with great food and small town friendliness.

Upscale homes are available for rent at Valley Ranges Getaways in Sassafras, one of the region’s most popular villages. Another visitor favorite, Olinda, sits just two miles down the road. Both are lined with craft shops, antique shops, and restaurants serving local wine.

Travelers can head to Healesville Sanctuary to get up close and personal with wombats and kangaroos, or pre-order tickets to ride on Puffing Billy, a preserved open-car steam train.

New Mexico

Travelers to and within the United States may want to skip the coasts in favor of the American Southwest this year.

According to the data company Statista, New Mexico is the seventh most populous state in the United States, with an average of 17 people per square mile. Nicknamed the Land of Enchantment, the state has national parks, the Aztec Ruins National Monument, wonderful caves, and rugged red and white desert biomes.

Some of the most luxurious hotels in New Mexico, such as the Inn of the Five Graces and the Hotel St. Francis, are located in the capital Sante Fe, which has a population of 85,000.

Ghost Ranch near Abiquiú, New Mexico, is an area with an eclectic mix of former residents, including dinosaurs, Spanish settlers, and artist Georgia O’Keeffe.

However, the Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Sante Fe sits on 57 acres outside of town. Guests stay in suites and freestanding casitas, which means “little houses” in Spanish, with southwestern décor and wood-burnt, Pueblo-inspired kiva fireplaces.

Overlooking the Rio Grande River Valley and the nearby Jemez Mountains, the resort features a year-round pool, outdoor fire pits, and an adventure center that offers hot air balloon rides, horse riding and white water rafting, and cultural tours to Ghost Ranch, or organizes Bonanza Creek Ranch where films like “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Wild Hogs” were filmed.

Saba and Saint Eustatius

With the Caribbean islands typically averaging over 30 million international travelers a year – a number not counting cruise line passengers – the number of international visitors visiting the small Caribbean islands of Saba and Saint Eustatius might just be a rounding error.

Both islands are special municipalities in the Netherlands and, according to the Dutch government agency Statistics Netherlands, each receive fewer than 10,000 tourists by air each year.

A third of visitors come from other islands – namely Aruba, Curaçao, and Saint Martin – with at least another third including travelers from the United States and the Netherlands.

Children Are Consuming Hand Sanitizer. Here’s How to Keep Them Safe.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers became a must have during the pandemic. But as sales rose and families stocked up, poison centers received more and more calls about small children they’d accidentally picked up.

Even now, roughly a year after the frenzy of stocking up on disinfectants began, hand sanitizer is still easy to get hold of in many households, and calls to the country’s poison control centers are at a faster pace than before the pandemic.

In the past year, there were more than 20,000 exposures to hand sanitizer in children under 6, an increase of 40 percent over 2019. This is based on data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers obtained from the New York Times.

Most of these exposures involved children up to 2 years of age who had ingested the disinfectant. In many cases, no symptoms were noted, which means the child may have just taken or licked a brief taste, which usually doesn’t have significant health effects, said Dr. Justin Arnold, the Medical Director of the Florida Poison Information Center Tampa. In other cases, vomiting, coughing and mouth irritation occurred in children.

While most cases are mild, by properly storing the disinfectant and monitoring young children while using it, parents can avoid the stress of calling poison control or taking an unnecessary trip to the emergency room.

The increase in exposures has continued over the past few months. In January, for example, almost 34 percent more exposure to hand sanitizer was reported in children under 6 than in the previous year.

Exposure to household cleaners such as liquid laundry detergent packs, bleach, all-purpose cleaners, drain cleaners, and oven cleaners also increased, increasing 10 percent in children under 6 years of age in the first few months of the pandemic. This comes from a report published in August by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

But when it comes to hand sanitizer that we regularly reach for when we’re outside and all our hands frothed up, it’s easy to let go of your guard, experts said. Mainly because hand sanitizer does not come with a child-resistant closure.

“People don’t realize how toxic it is when ingested, what effects it has, and what to do to store it safely,” said William Eggleston, clinical toxicologist at the Upstate New York Poison Center in Syracuse, NY. and an assistant professor at Binghamton University School of Pharmacy.

It depends on how much is swallowed.

If children take enough alcohol-based hand sanitizer, they can get “dangerously drunk,” said Dr. Diane Calello, a pediatric toxicologist and executive and medical director of the New Jersey Poison Center.

Last spring, Dr. Calello co-authored a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the rise in calls to poison centers warning parents to keep hand sanitisers, detergents and disinfectants away from children. The report highlighted the case of a preschooler who became unresponsive in her home near a 64-ounce bottle of ethanol-based hand sanitizer. Her blood alcohol level was 0.27 percent, more than three times the legal limit above which an adult is not allowed to drive.

Hand sanitizer is 60 to 95 percent alcohol, a much higher concentration than beer, wine, or most liquor. A child weighing 20 pounds who drank a tablespoon or two could get high, said Dr. Calello and “a little drunk” appear.

“If a dose goes higher, they can become very sleepy and have difficulty breathing, just like we see with severe alcohol intoxication in adults,” she added.

After drinking a small amount of alcohol, children are more likely than adults to experience dangerous blood sugar drops, which can make them sluggish from about six to ten hours after consumption, said Dr. Calello.

Ingesting disinfectants can also be irritating to the throat or stomach, especially if they’re formulated with isopropyl alcohol, an ingredient often found in alcohol, the experts say.

Keep all hand sanitizer out of the reach of children – and out of sight, even if you only have a small bottle tucked in a purse or backpack.

“It is important for parents to treat it like household drugs,” said Dr. Eggleston.

You may be wondering if your family should avoid hand sanitizer entirely. While hand washing is the most effective way to get rid of germs, the CDC nonetheless recommends using a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus when soap and water are not readily available.

If you have children under 6 at home, supervise them while they use it, said Dr. Arnold.

“You don’t want the kid to pump their own and start trying,” he added.

There was a surge in calls to U.S. poison centers in July and August after the Food and Drug Administration warned about hand sanitizer, which may contain methanol, which can be toxic if ingested. Hand sanitisers should never contain methanol.

“You can die if you drink methanol – and people do,” said Dr. Calello.

However, the absorption of methanol into the skin is “quite low,” she added.

You can visit the FDA website for a list of disinfectants that should not be used (including several brands imported from Mexico that contain methanol). If you find you have any of these products at home, the FDA recommends placing the hand sanitizer bottle in a hazardous waste container, if available, and contacting your local waste disposal center for advice on the safest disposal. Do not flush, pour it down the drain, or mix it with other liquids.

If your child has swallowed hand sanitizer, don’t try to induce vomiting, the experts said. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for quick instructions on best course of action.

If your child is passed out, behaves abnormally, has difficulty waking up, or has difficulty breathing, call 911.

“Fortunately, the milder cases are much more common,” said Dr. Calello. “More likely we’ll say, ‘Stay home, watch him, I’ll call you back in an hour or half an hour.’ In this way we keep a lot of people away from the hospital by giving them real-time telephone instructions. “

You should also call poison control if your child has hand sanitizer in their eyes. In the United States, there were about 900 reports of eye exposure in children under 6 years of age in 2020, up 54 percent from 2019. “In an emergency, any clean liquid can be used to rinse the eye after chemical exposure,” wrote Dr. Kathryn Colby, an ophthalmologist at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, in a comment published in JAMA Ophthalmology last month. “Finally,” she added, “parents need to understand the importance of an eye exam when exposure occurs in children,” as early diagnosis and treatment is critical.

Her White Blood Count Was Dangerously Low. Was Med School Still Safe?

In Niyongere’s office, she first spoke to an intern who disappeared after a full medical history and examination, and then returned with the young doctor the patient had spoken to by phone. A distant part of her brain observed that her doctor was younger than her.

The hematologist sat across from the patient and slowly explained what she knew. In someone who is otherwise healthy and whose other blood types are fine, this severe drop in neutrophils – what is medically called neutropenia – is usually caused by a drug. There were of course other options. Nutritional deficiencies could do this. Insufficient vitamin B12 or copper can affect the blood count. Some viral infections – HIV, mono, hepatitis – could also occur. And they would look for it. But her money was for drugs. The doctor knew that the only drug the patient was taking regularly was Adderall; She had a history of ADHD, and Niyongere had not found anything in the medical literature to associate this drug with neutropenia. Still, the haematologist insisted that this was the most likely cause of her isolated neutropenia.

They would be looking for infections. They would check their levels of vitamins and minerals. And if all of this were normal, the next step would be a bone marrow biopsy. The doctor expected it to be normal – with lots of blood cells of all kinds being made and released. Her first hematologist was right that a cancer or disease process that interfered with the production of these vital defenders was possible – but how healthy the patient looked and felt was very unlikely, according to Niyongere. In the meantime, she should stop the Adderall.

The following week was busy as the student prepared to resume the portion of her medical school education. In just a few days she would be in the hospital learning to care for sick patients, and she needed her immune system to be up to the task. She watched the test results come back. The vitamin levels were normal. She didn’t have any of the viruses. So that Friday the student went back to Niyongere’s office for a bone marrow biopsy. The doctor suggested doing this with sedation in the hospital operating room. No, the patient insisted. You would do it in the office. It was a difficult procedure, but the patient wanted to get it over with. She needed an answer and a few more neutrophils before she could be safe with the sick patients she would see in the hospital.

The results came back faster than expected. A wave of weakness forced her to sit down as she read the results: normal. There were no signs of leukemia or any other process that might affect your body’s ability to produce neutrophils. And she made a healthy amount of all white blood cells, including neutrophils. This meant that everything that happened to these warrior cells happened after they left the safety of the bone marrow and entered the bloodstream. That’s what you would expect if this were a response to a drug. Many drugs can cause neutropenia. Some drugs destroy these battle cells directly. Some trigger an immune response so that other parts of the body’s defense system mistake these cells for invading pathogens and attack them.

Sometimes, if it was a response to a drug, cell counts would go back up almost immediately. Neutrophils have a very short lifespan and a full set of new cells are released from the bone marrow every day. The student waited eagerly for her next blood count. Could just stopping Adderall bring them back to normal?
