Murdoch’s Pick to Run The New York Post Bets On the Web and Celebs

Rupert Murdoch took a top editor from his cheeky and conservative London tabloid The Sun and hired him to run his bold and conservative New York tabloid, The New York Post.

Keith Poole, a 44-year-old Englishman who has redesigned The Sun’s website for the past few years, started as the Post’s editor-in-chief on March 22. Most employees have not heard from him since then, said two Post employees.

He had lunch with Emily Smith, longtime editor of The Post’s Gossip franchise, but had yet to make an all-hands video call to greet the employees who were working remotely or an email greeting two people said and spoke on condition of anonymity to uncover internal matters. For some employees, the only evidence of the new boss’s presence was the addition of his name to the main newsroom channel on Slack, the messaging app.

A spokeswoman for The Post said in an email that Mr. Poole would get to know the team in his own way: “Keith has met a number of Post employees in person, via video call and over the phone (as most of them work from there) home), and he’s had lunch with other coworkers, not just Emily. “

Mr. Poole effectively replaced Col Allan, an Australian tabloid specialist who retired in March after more than 40 years with Murdoch Papers.

Mr. Poole has more experience attracting online readers than his predecessor. Before joining The Sun as a digital editor in 2016, he helped make The Daily Mail’s U.S. website a must-have for fans of celebrity gossip.

“At The Sun, it’s all you focus on,” said Chris Spargo, a reporter who worked for both of Mr. Poole’s previous employers. Mr Poole also sees The Daily Mail as the Post’s main competitor, said several people with knowledge of the Post’s newsroom.

A former colleague said Mr. Poole did not fit the stereotype of the gruff, boisterous tabloid editor.

“Keith is charming and has that British joke,” said David Martosko, former US political editor at The Daily Mail who is now Senior Content Executive at Zenger News. “More people in our business should adopt his collaborative editing style.”

His responsibilities include not only the now profitable New York tabloid, which Mr. Murdoch took out of bankruptcy in the 1990s, but also the larger New York Post Group. These include the Post Digital Network, which consists of the newspaper’s website, a separate website for page 6, the entertainment website Decider.com, and the advertising agency Post Studios.

Mr. Poole, who studied at Loughborough University in England, came to New York after most postal workers had worked from home for more than a year. At least eight Post journalists have recently left, including White House correspondent Ebony Bowden and editor-in-chief Maggie Coughlan.

Mr. Poole, who refused to be interviewed, worked for The Daily Mail from 2003 to 2016, spending part of that time in New York as the chief editor of the US website DailyMail.com. Within two years of working for Mr. Murdoch at The Sun, he had made his website the UK’s largest online brand. Last year he was appointed deputy editor-in-chief.

In a 2018 interview, Mr Poole said he focused on five key areas: news, celebrity, football, money, and women’s lifestyle. While at The Sun, he met frequently with Robert Thomson, the executive director of Mr. Murdoch’s newspaper company News Corp, who was often in the London office before the pandemic, said three people with knowledge of the relationship.

Under Mr. Allan, The Post specialized in celebrity news and coverage in the city, but also championed former President Donald J. Trump and attacked his rivals. Under Mr. Poole, the newspaper continued to focus on celebs and liberal villains, the April 16 front page suggested. A Republican Congressman who voted for the charges against former President Donald Trump is being recruited to run for New York governor next year.

Lawmaker Rep. John Katko has not ruled out running, said these individuals, who refused to be named due to the private nature of the conversations.

The development comes when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, comes under fire over several scandals. Several women have accused him of sexual harassment, which he denies while his government is under investigation for handling Covid-19 death dates. Cuomo has turned down calls for resignation and was on track to run for a fourth term.

Katko, who has called for Cuomo’s resignation, is a prominent member of the House Republican Caucus. He is the senior member of the House Committee on Homeland Security and may be named chair if the GOP Republicans retake the house during the 2022 midterm elections.

But Katko could again run into stumbling blocks running for Congress: there is a potential for backlash within his own party for his impeachment decision, and he represents a swing district. Katko’s campaign raised nearly $ 340,000 in the first quarter and has more than $ 580,000 available through April, according to new records from the Bundestag Electoral Commission.

The race in his district, the 24th in New York, is slated to be a litter next year, according to analysts at Cook Political Report. The district, which includes Syracuse, is one of at least 17 House Republican races that are considered competitive. President Joe Biden, a Democrat, won Katko’s district against former President Donald Trump by almost nine points.

Republicans won last year’s House of Representatives elections and are just a handful of seats away from becoming a majority.

Media representatives for both the Katko Convention Bureau and the 2022 re-election campaign did not return repeated requests for comments.

The recruitment surge for Katko shows that members of the GOP are looking for a more moderate candidate for the highest office in a traditionally democratic state. New York GOP MP Lee Zeldin has already announced his candidacy for governor. Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has said he could run on the Republican ticket.

Zeldin, Giuliani and others are due to speak for nationwide contenders at the New York Republican meeting in Albany on Monday, according to a person briefed on the matter. MEP Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., who has not publicly ruled out running for governor in 2022, is also on the list of speakers. Katko is not expected to attend, this person added.

Katko is the chairman of the moderate republican government group. His vote shows that he’s not necessarily a hardliner either. While Katko pushed back certain parts of the Affordable Care Act, in 2015 he didn’t vote to repeal it entirely. Katko later voted against the Affordable Health Care Act, the Republican’s replacement for the ACA, which passed the House but not received it by the Senate.

Cuomo has since said that he wanted to run for a fourth term despite the exam.

The poll is mixed for Cuomo. A March poll by Morning Consult shows that 53% of New York voters approve of Cuomo. However, a Quinnipiac poll conducted last month found that over 60% of registered registered New York voters would prefer Cuomo to stop running in 2022.

“I’ve been thinking about how I really wanted to treat people differently,” he said. “And it had an impact, that’s for sure.”

Chief Magnus began his law enforcement career as a dispatcher in the Lansing Police Department in 1979, rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police in Fargo, ND, in 1999, helping set up a refugee liaison program.

Later, as the chief of police in Richmond, he helped fight violent crime. In 2014, one of his last years in the department, the city recorded only 11 murders, the lowest number in more than four decades. However, in Richmond, Chief Magnus also faced a racial discrimination lawsuit filed by seven black sergeants, lieutenants and captains, despite a 2012 jury rejecting all claims. In 2015, a former Richmond police officer settled a dismissal suit with the department after saying he was fired for complaining that Chief Magnus sexually molested him and committed racial slurs. Chief Magnus called the allegations “completely wrong”.

“At that time, there were still people who said I was an easier target because I was a gay man,” he said. “This is not the first time in my career that I’ve seen it.”

In Tucson last year, Chief Magnus drew fire again when it took the department two months to release the body camera video of the death of a 27-year-old Latino man, Carlos Ingram Lopez, who repeatedly asked for water while he was withheld was by police officers.

Chief Magnus blamed the delay on a bureaucratic breakdown and said he didn’t see the video right away. But he said he wish he had done more to see it for himself. “We should have asked to see the video but it didn’t and when we finally saw it we were obviously very concerned about it,” he said. Chief Magnus offered to resign during a press conference when the video was released, but the mayor kept him updated and praised his work in a statement Monday.

Caitlyn Jenner, a former Olympic and celebrity transgender activist, is investigating a run for California Governor against Gavin Newsom, a Democrat who, according to people familiar with her thinking, faces a possible recall election later this year. The California Secretary of State is expected to announce soon that Newsom’s recall has officially qualified for an election. The recall organizers say they have exceeded the 1.5 million required signatures. Such an election would likely take place later in the year.

So far, efforts to replace Mr. Newsom do not seem to reflect the 2003 California recall election that overthrew Democrat Governor Gray Davis and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger. Despite criticism of Mr. Newsom’s handling of the pandemic and other controversies he faced, a recent poll found that only 40 percent of the state’s voters would support a governor’s recall.

Mr Newsom is also supported by the fact that no great Democrat has joined the race. While Ms. Jenner has name recognition, she would be a first-time candidate, and the other Republicans expected to run are not considered very likely.

If she runs, Ms. Jenner’s previous connections with Mr. Trump would likely complicate her offer given his deep unpopularity in the state. She supported Mr Trump early on when he ran for president, but dropped her support in 2018 after his administration repeatedly attacked transgender rights.

Another person with ties to Mr. Trump’s world, Ric Grenell, who is briefly called The acting director of National Intelligence, Trump allies say, is considering running his own run for governorship.

WASHINGTON – The Biden government on Saturday hired Johnson & Johnson to manage a troubled Baltimore manufacturing facility that ruined 15 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine and prevented the facility from producing another vaccine from AstraZeneca manufacture.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ extraordinary move came just days after officials learned that Emergent BioSolutions, a contract manufacturer that makes both Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca’s vaccines, was mixing the ingredients in the two, which regulators did delayed the approval of the plant’s production lines.

By outsourcing the AstraZeneca vaccine, according to two senior federal health officials, the facility can be dedicated solely to Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine to avoid future breakdowns.

The Department of Health and Human Services directed Johnson & Johnson to establish a new leadership team to oversee all aspects of manufacturing and manufacturing at the Emergent Baltimore facility. The company said in a statement that it took “full responsibility” for the vaccine manufactured at the Emergent facility.

Given President Biden’s aggressive efforts to have enough doses for every adult by the end of May, federal officials fear the mix-up will undermine public confidence in Covid-19 vaccines. The AstraZeneca vaccine in particular has raised safety concerns. Germany, France and other European nations have temporarily discontinued use in some vaccine recipients after reports of rare cerebral blood clots.

The ingredient mix-up and the government move on Saturday is a major setback and PR debacle for Emergent, a Maryland-based biotech company that has built a profitable business by working with the federal government, largely selling its own Anthrax vaccines against the Strategic National Stockpile.

An Emergent spokesman declined to comment, except that the company will continue to manufacture AstraZeneca cans until it receives a contract amendment from the federal government.

Unlike Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca does not yet have an emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its vaccine. With three federally approved vaccines (the other two are from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna), it’s not clear whether the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has had regulatory issues in the past, could even get approved in time to meet U.S. needs .

However, one of the federal officials said the Department of Health and Human Services is discussing working with AstraZeneca to adapt its vaccine to fight new coronavirus variants. AstraZeneca said in a statement that it would work with the Biden administration to find a new location to manufacture its vaccine.

To date, none of the Johnson & Johnson cans manufactured by Emergent have been cleared for distribution by the FDA. Officials have stated that it could take weeks to find out if other batches of vaccine were contaminated and that FDA inspectors are determining if the emergent facility can be cleared to release the doses it made.

In another agreement brokered by the Biden administration last month, Johnson & Johnson is now working with Merck, one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers. Officials said Merck would help manage the Baltimore facility.

Emergent’s Baltimore facility is one of two federally designated “Centers for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing” and was built with taxpayer support. Last June, the Emergent government paid $ 628 million to reserve space as part of Operation Warp Speed, the Trump administration’s rapid initiative to develop coronavirus vaccines.

Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca both signed a contract with Emergent to use the space. Both vaccines are called live virus vector vaccines, which means they use a modified, harmless version of another virus as a vector or carrier to deliver instructions to the body’s immune system. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine is given in one dose, AstraZeneca in two doses.

Experts in vaccine manufacturing said the FDA has historically had a policy of preventing such mishaps by not allowing a plant to make two live viral vector vaccines as it can lead to mix-ups and contamination.

Last month, Mr Biden canceled a visit to the Emergent Baltimore plant, and his spokeswoman announced that the administration would conduct an audit of the Strategic National Stockpile, the country’s emergency medical reserve. Both measures came after an investigation by the New York Times that looked at how the company had gained oversized influence on the repository.

Senator Richard M. Burr’s decision to vote for the condemnation of former President Donald J. Trump on Saturday fueled speculation that Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of Mr. Trump, will seek the seat of the North Carolina Senate Mr Burr will vacate in 2022.

Another Republican, former Representative Mark Walker, an ally of Trump, has already announced his candidacy, and Pat McCrory, a former Republican governor, is also a possible candidate. Mark Meadows, the former North Carolina representative and former Trump chief of staff, is also said to be there.

“We’re going to take a closer look at each candidate in comparison to some sort of coronation,” said Mark Brody, a member of the Republican National Committee from Union County outside Charlotte.

If she runs, the Trump family could be a liability on a battlefield that the former president only gained 1.3 percentage points in 2020 – or it could bring no benefit at all in 2022, depending on the political environment.

“There’s a myth that Trump voters will come out for Trump candidates or family members,” said John Anzalone, a Democratic pollster who has campaigned in the South. “Cult members only appear in full power for the cult leader.”

And Ms. Trump’s candidacy could help increase Democratic turnout, especially among the state’s large black population, and counter the typical decline in most mid-term elections.

But Ms. Trump’s boosters, led by Mr. Graham, hope that she can use the backlash in the party’s grassroots base to catapult her to the top of the field.

After Mr Burr’s vote, the North Carolina Republican Party reprimanded Mr Burr, calling his vote “shocking and disappointing”.

Representative Patrick T. McHenry, a Republican minority leader in the House, downplayed the importance of Mr Burr’s vote.

But he said Ms. Trump would be “the favorite” when she runs, adding, “Nobody comes closer.”

David Perdue Files to Run Against Raphael Warnock for Georgia Senate Seat

David Perdue, the one-year-old U.S. Senator from Georgia who lost a runoff election to Senator Jon Ossoff last month, filed documents Monday evening showing he was planning a comeback – this time against Georgia’s other new Senator, Raphael Warnock.

Mr. Perdue, a former businessman who initially ran for office as an outsider and later became one of former President Donald Trump’s closest allies in the Senate, submitted documents to the Bundestag Electoral Commission to set up a “Perdue for Senate” campaign committee.

The move, first reported by Fox News, was seen as the first step in the Republican Party’s efforts to win back one of the Senate seats lost in Georgia’s historic runoff on Jan. 5.

Mr. Warnock and Mr. Ossoff prevailed in those runoffs – not only the first time since 2000 that a Democrat won a seat in the Georgia Senate, but also a victory that put the Democrats in control of the Senate. The two parties each have 50 seats in the chamber, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the casting vote.

The loss of Mr Perdue to Mr Ossoff followed a bitter campaign and ended with Mr Perdue being sidelined after exposure to coronavirus. An election evening appearance by Mr. Trump in the state failed to spark sufficient Republican turnout and raised questions about whether he was depressed by Mr. Trump’s repeated fraud allegations in the local elections.

Mr. Ossoff got 50.6 percent of the vote to 49.4 percent for Mr. Perdue, who waited two days for approval, leading to speculation that he might challenge the result.

Mr Warnock won her runoff election against Senator Kelly Loeffler, 51 to 49 percent. The two took part in a special election to serve a six-year term. The 2022 Senate race winner will have a full term.

Georgia should already be a major focus of the 2022 election, with a hotly contested governor race that could result in a rematch between Republican incumbent Brian Kemp and his 2018 Democratic opponent Stacey Abrams. Ms. Abrams narrowly lost that race, but ran a voting organization that was vital to the registration and mobilization of Democrats and helped turn Georgia blue for President Biden, Mr. Warnock, and Mr. Ossoff. Ms. Abrams has not announced whether she will run for governor again.

Mr Trump has already made it very clear that he plans to take part in the Georgia elections in 2022: He has sharply criticized Mr Kemp and the state secretary and lieutenant governor for failing to support his false claims of electoral fraud in Georgia and wanting to that they will lose if they run for re-election.

A group of Ohio power brokers have reached out to business leaders across the state to try to win them for Republican Rob Portman’s Senate seat in 2022 in an effort to keep pro-Trump contenders from winning this contest from familiarizing themselves with the cause.

Some of those who have started engaging with potential candidates are donors and company types close to former Ohio Republican governor John Kasich.

Kasich is one of the most famous GOP critics of former President Donald Trump. He was one of the few Republicans to be featured at the Democratic National Convention that summer to support Joe Biden.

The opportunity to try to win a Republican primary in a seemingly divided party leads some executives to choose not to join. Those raised on the Republican and Democratic sides include the CEO of a corporate advocacy group in Ohio, a venture capitalist and digital marketing manager.

Some people are reluctant to enter the race because a Republican primary will involve a battle for the party’s base and likely Trump’s own endorsement. If he stands up for it, Trump will likely endorse someone more aligned with his agenda than a more traditional Republican. Trump won Ohio in the 2020 presidential election.

Jim Jordan, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, R-Ohio, will not be running for Portman’s seat, his office recently announced. Kevin McCarthy, minority chairman of the House of Representatives, R-Calif., Said in a statement Thursday that after meeting with Trump, the former president “is required to elect Republicans in the House and Senate in 2022”.

GOP politicians with allegiances to Trump who reportedly may be in the mix include Rep. Steve Stivers and Jane Timken, leaders of the Ohio Republican Party.

Political strategists say they are not surprised by the effort to find a business-minded candidate. It is the latest signal that the Republican primary for Portman’s seat will be expansive.

“There will likely be a huge box in the GOP area code with a choice of all ideological stripes,” Charlie Black, a former Kasich strategist, told CNBC. It is “expected,” Black said of executive recruitment, “but there will be conservative candidates who are not married to Trump.”

Portman announced on Monday that he would not seek re-election in 2022 because “it had become more and more difficult to overcome the partisan congestion and to make progress in the political field.” Portman was a Republican legislature who voted to ratify the electoral college results and confirm Biden as the 2020 presidential winner.

Executives with Republican ties who have made attempts to include them in the race include Alex Fischer, president and CEO of The Columbus Partnership, and Mark Kvamme, a venture capitalist who has been in Ohio for more than a decade.

Another executive who has emerged as a Democratic contender is Nancy Kramer, founder of Ohio-based digital marketing agency Resource / Ammirati. Kramer’s company was taken over by IBM in 2016.

Fischer’s Columbus Partnership is a corporate agency group for the city of Columbus and central Ohio. Fischer has also been publicly credited for helping keep the MLS soccer team, the Columbus Crew, in town when they considered moving to Texas.

Kvamme and Fischer told CNBC that they are not interested in running for the Senate despite being approached. Kramer, who currently works at IBM iX in Columbus, has not returned a request for comment.

“Yes, some people called me. I’m flattered,” Kvamme told CNBC. “Maybe I’ll step into the political arena one day, but my time will be better spent demonstrating to my friends in California that Ohio and the Midwest are the next great place to start and build tech companies.”

Fischer, who was once the deputy governor of Tennessee before moving to Ohio, said he had no interest in running despite discussions in political circles.

“No, I don’t think about it privately or position myself otherwise. Obviously there is a lot of discussion in political circles,” Fischer told CNBC. “In my conversations there is mounting frustration about the wider political environment, the inability to solve problems and work across party lines to work together. There is also a desire to see leaders to become more active,” he added.
