In Mr Bannon’s case, the division moved relatively quickly, taking about three and a half weeks to decide that the contempt charge was warranted.

But the Meadows case is more complicated, legal experts say, in part because Mr Meadows had already submitted numerous documents to the committee, along with a list of documents he was withheld on privilege. Mr Meadows was an administrative officer while advising Mr Trump and his attorney has argued that as a former presidential advisor, he has immunity and is not required to testify.

The Department of Justice has long enforced broad immunity for close presidential advisers, said Jonathan D. Shaub, a law professor at the University of Kentucky who served in the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel.

Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat from California, suggested that Mr. Navarro could be next.

“If you fail to do so, we must accuse you of defying the summons,” she said. “We just have to do it.”

There is no doubt that the courts have been moving faster since the change in power in the White House Legal Department. In two separate judgments – the first in 2019, the second last month – judges said Trump’s White House must work with the House’s oversight demands. But the case lasted three and a half months two years ago when Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson released a 120-page statement to end the first phase. Just 23 days elapsed between Mr Trump’s motion to block publication of papers on January 6 and Judge Tanya Chutkan’s verdict against him in November.

Exoskeleton Suits: A New Device to Help You Walk and Run Better

Lower body exoskeletons and exo-suits are already being used in some rehabilitation facilities and laboratories to improve walking ability in stroke patients, elderly and young people with cerebral palsy or other disabilities. But perhaps the most compelling and annoying science today is about exoskeletons for the rest of us, including young and healthy people. In this research area, scientists are developing exoskeletons to reduce the energy costs of running and walking, and to make these activities less tiring, more physiologically efficient, and possibly more enjoyable.

So far, the first results seem promising. In a series of studies conducted at Stanford University’s Biomechatronics Lab last year (and funded in part by Nike, Inc.), researchers found that college students were able to run about 15 percent more efficiently than normal on a treadmill when they wore a customizable prototype version of a lower leg exoskeleton. These exoskeletons feature a motorized, lightweight frame that straps around the runners’ shins and ankles and a carbon fiber rod that is inserted into the soles of the shoes. Together, these elements reduce the amount of force that runners’ leg muscles need to use to move them forward. The authors of the study estimate that we could run at least 10 percent faster on real paths and trails with the devices than on our own.

A slightly optimized device also increased the speed of young people walking, according to a separate experiment by the Stanford Laboratory published in April. In this study, students walked about 40 percent faster on average when wearing a powered exoskeleton prototype, while burning about 2 percent less energy.

In essence, exoskeleton technology could be thought of as “analogous to e-bikes,” but for walking, not pedaling, said Steven Collins, professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford and senior author of the new studies. By reducing the amount of exercise, the powered machines could theoretically encourage us to move around more, perhaps commuting on foot, hanging out or dropping by with naturally faster spouses or friends, and reaching places that might otherwise seem dauntingly hilly or far away.

They might even allow our muscles to power our cell phones, according to one of the more surprising new exoskeleton studies. In this experiment, published in Science in May, healthy young volunteers from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario wore an exoskeleton that contained a backpack with a small generator attached to cables that ran to their ankles.

In an Overrun Kabul, Many Have No Place to Run

The citizens of Kabul were given reassurances that they would be safe, that a deal had been struck to avoid a full-fledged attack by the Taliban on their city. But for many Afghans, the scenes playing out around them on Sunday in their capital told another story.

It was not just that their president had fled the country. There were innumerable smaller signs that their world was about to change.

Police posts had been abandoned, and the officers had shed their uniforms in favor of civilian garb. Posters of women at beauty salons were painted over — presumably to avoid retribution from Afghanistan’s new, fundamentalist rulers. And on the east side of the city, inmates at Kabul’s main prison, many of them members of the Taliban, seized the opportunity to break out.

“This is the Day of Judgment,” declared an onlooker as he filmed the inmates carrying bundles of belongings away from the prison.

The Afghan interior minister, Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal, announced in the early afternoon that an agreement had been made for a peaceful transfer of power for greater Kabul.

“We have ordered all Afghan National Security Forces divisions and members to stabilize Kabul,” Mr. Mirzakwal said in a video statement. “There will be no attack on the city. The agreement for greater Kabul city is that under an interim administration, God willing, power will be transferred.”

But residents seemed unconvinced by their leaders’ assurances.

Many had fled to Kabul as their own cities fell. Kabul, if nowhere else in their country, seemed that it might provide a haven for at least the near future.

But the future was nearer than almost anyone knew, and on Sunday, with the Taliban in Kabul, many people — among them President Ashraf Ghani and other senior government officials — were looking for an exit from the country itself.

Afghans and non-Afghans alike headed to the airport, where the scene was one of chaos. Witnesses at the civilian domestic terminal said thousands of Afghans had crammed into the terminal and swarmed around planes on the tarmac, desperately seeking flights out.

The United States Embassy warned Americans not to even try.

“The security situation in Kabul is changing quickly including at the airport,” the embassy said in a statement. “There are reports of the airport taking fire; therefore we are instructing U.S. citizens to shelter in place.”

With the evacuation of U.S. diplomats and some civilians underway on Sunday, helicopter after helicopter could be seen ferrying passengers to Kabul’s airport. But many Afghans could do little more than look on in despair.

The Taliban themselves appeared to be trying to strike a tone of reassurance.

“Our forces are entering Kabul city with all caution,” the militants said in a statement.

But as the sun set behind the mountains, the traffic was clogged up as crowds grew bigger. More and more Taliban fighters appeared on motorbikes, police pickups and even a Humvee that once belonged to the Afghan security forces.

With rumors rife and reliable information hard to come by, the streets were filled with scenes of panic and desperation. Some posted videos of the chaos.

Sahraa Karimi, the head of Afghan Film, filmed her own attempt to flee her neighborhood and posted it on Facebook. The video shows her fleeing on foot, out of breath and clutching at her head scarf as she urges those around her to get out while they can.

“Greetings,” she can be heard saying. “The Taliban have reached the city. We are escaping.”

New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday she plans to run for governor in the state’s 2022 race after she finishes the remainder of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s term. 

“I fully expect to. I’ve prepared for this,” Hochul said when asked on NBC’s “TODAY” whether she will run. 

“I am confident that they’ll see that I fight like hell every single day. It’s how I’m hardwired, and I’m looking forward to this challenge, and I won’t let New Yorkers down,” Hochul said in the interview. 

Hochul will succeed Cuomo in less than two weeks and will complete the last 15 months of his term. The governor announced his resignation following a bombshell report released by the New York State Attorney General’s office that found he sexually harassed at least 11 women and oversaw a hostile working environment in his office. 

Hochul said Wednesday she is ready to take the helm and vowed not to have the same “toxic” workplace that her predecessor allegedly had for his three terms. She also said she would oust any Cuomo staff or officials who were implicated in the report. 

“No one who was named as doing anything unethical in the report will remain in my administration,” Hochul said Wednesday. “There will be turnover.”

Hochul as lieutenant governor has amassed a war chest of roughly $1.7 million, according to state campaign finance records.

She already has a strong mix of wealthy donors from a wide range of industries including those in real estate, labor and health care, according to state campaign finance records. Donors include William Rudin, the CEO of Rudin Management; Samuel Savarino, the head of Buffalo-based construction firm Savarino Companies; and the International Union of Operating Engineers.

The formidable campaign funding suggests Hochul has an advantage going into 2022.

Other potential Democratic contenders include State Attorney General Letitia James, who oversaw the months-long investigation into Cuomo. She is seen as having ambitions for higher office but has not said whether she would run.

Cuomo, despite stepping down within the next two weeks, could still run for governor again if he’s not impeached and convicted by the state legislature. The governor had more than $18 million in campaign funds on hand by the end of the first half of this year. 

New York state Sen. Alessandra Biaggi is also considering running for governor next year, according to key Democratic Party sources in and around Albany. The Democrat was one of several critics of Cuomo’s workplace environment and had called on the governor to resign.

But Biaggi is not a household name like other contenders and has only $185,000 in campaign funds, according to New York State campaign finance records, making it unlikely she would win the election.

Several Republican candidates have also announced their plans to run for governor next year, including U.S. Rep. Lee Zedlin and Westchester County executive Rob Astoriano, according to The Wall Street Journal. Andrew Giuliani, a former aide in the Trump administration and the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has also announced his candidacy.

The New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul plans to host a personal fundraiser in her hometown of Buffalo next week as she prepares to run for governor in 2022, according to people familiar with the matter.

Hochul will lead the event on Wednesday, days before it takes over Andrew Cuomo, who on Tuesday announced his resignation over countless sexual harassment allegations that got him in hot water with state lawmakers and prosecutors. He said his resignation would take effect in two weeks.

Top tickets are expected to cost between $ 2,500 and $ 5,000, these people said. There will likely be a separate base donation event that day as well, one of the people said.

The Hochul fundraising campaign will also celebrate its birthday, said these people. Hochul holds a fundraiser for her birthday every year, added one of the people.

These people declined to be named in order to speak freely about an event that does not appear to be on Hochul’s public calendar.

This event has higher stakes than previous fundraisers. It could help set the tone for Hochul’s 2022 governorship campaign, in which she could face stiff competition from several prominent Democrats.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and State Senator Alessandra Biaggi have not ruled out running for the governor’s villa. Attorney General Letitia James, whose report on Cuomo allegations of sexual harassment led to the governor’s resignation, is believed to be a potential lead candidate for the job.

Hochul becomes the state’s first female governor.

One of the people said that the fundraiser was originally supposed to take place on Hochul’s property in Buffalo next week, but that it had to be relocated due to increased interest in it. The fundraiser could also be postponed to another date after it settles into the governor’s job.

Although the event was launched before Cuomo’s resignation and the appointment of Hochul as the state’s next head of government, the money raised at the event will end up in their gubernatorial campaign account. State records show that Hochul’s campaign to re-elect the lieutenant governor raised just over $ 525,000 in the first half of the year and has just over $ 1.7 million to spend.

Hochul told NBC’s “TODAY” that she is moving forward with her candidacy for governor next year.

“I fully expect that. I have prepared myself for it,” said Hochul when asked if she would run.

Those expected to join the fundraiser next week are many of Hochul’s most loyal supporters, these people said.

“These are people who have been with her since the city council. They have long been her supporters and friends,” one person with direct knowledge of the congregation told CNBC.

Hochul received calls from donors shortly after James released the report that Cuomo had sexually molested 11 women. Cuomo has denied wrongdoing. Some of the donors who spoke to Hochul at the time to encourage her to run for governor had previously supported Cuomo.

Many of Cuomo’s other top financiers are starting to privately acknowledge that they will support Hochul in 2022, said a person familiar with the talks.

A Hochul spokesman did not respond to repeated requests for comment.

“People love her,” said Patterson, stating the obvious.

After their first casual meeting (“No agents, no lawyers,” Patterson said), Parton and Patterson spent the next six to eight months working out scenes and pacing chapters and notes. Parton called him JJ, short for Jimmy James, he said.

They kept the project a secret, despite Parton derailing that she was a fan in an interview with the New York Times late last year. When asked to name three writers she would invite to a dinner party, she named him along with Maya Angelou and Charles Dickens.

“First would be James Patterson,” she said. “Since we’re both in the entertainment industry, we could write it off as a business expense.”

Everytown for Gun Safety to Train Volunteers to Run for Office

Gun control group Everytown for Gun Safety plans to spend $ 3 million to recruit and train its volunteers for the candidacy, with the goal of getting 200 races in the next election cycle.

The program is the latest step in a year-long effort by groups supporting stricter gun laws to become politically competitive with the National Rifle Association, which has a strong grip on American politics amid the rise in mass shootings.

That dynamic has started to shift as the NRA loses its hold on moderate Democrats and more gun restrictions are passed by state lawmakers. But even proposals with broad bipartisan support among voters, such as universal background checks and red flag laws, have failed in Congress.

Everytown’s new program, called Demand a Seat, will begin this fall and will include training on the fundamentals of running a campaign, as well as instruction from lawyers who have become legislators, such as Rep. Lucy McBath, Democrat of Georgia. It is aimed at members of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action, two branches of Everytown supported by Michael R. Bloomberg.

“Our volunteers have fought to have the people at the table listen to them, and some wouldn’t, so now our volunteers and gun violence survivors will be fighting to occupy those seats,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand action.

Everytown said more than 100 of its volunteers ran for office last year and 43 won.

The group said more than 50 former volunteers were elected to state parliaments, 18 to city or district councils, eight to school boards, and two to Congress: Ms. McBath and Marie Newman, Democrats of Illinois.

Ms McBath, who was first elected in 2018, said in an interview on Monday that as a lawyer for Moms Demand Action, she learned how to organize people, give speeches and talk about politics with different audiences. But she said, “I had no idea how to campaign.”

“I’ve never run for office,” said Ms. McBath, who joined Moms Demand Action after her son Jordan Davis was fatally shot. “I got a bit of help from people around me and went to bootcamp training over a weekend, but I wish I had this kind of structure, an ongoing structure that I could relate to all the time.”

State Representative Jo Ella Hoye, a Democrat, was elected to the Kansas Legislature in November after leading the chapter of Moms Demand Action in Kansas for about three years. She said she mostly staffed her campaign with other volunteers making more than 10,000 calls for her.

“You have this lightbulb moment: I used this database for our organization and I will use it for our campaign. We attend training on messaging and social media, ”said Ms. Hoye. “If you formalize it, the lightbulb will click just a little earlier.”

You and Ms. McBath will advise the participants in the program, as will, among others, the Mayoress Keisha Lance Bottoms of Atlanta, a Democrat; former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, a Democrat; and former Florida MP David Jolly, who was Republican during his tenure but has since left the party.

Donors encourage Kathy Hochul to run for governor

A group of New York’s most influential political donors in business encourage Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, running for governor, while Andrew Cuomo grapples with various investigations after an official report found he sexually molested several women.

Hochul’s talks with financiers over the past few weeks have focused in part on her political future, including a possible candidacy for governor and the possible assumption of governor if Cuomo resigns or is ousted, people familiar with the matter said .

These discussions came before and after the release of Attorney General Letitia James’ report last week, which listed cases of alleged sexual harassment by Cuomo against at least 11 women. The governor has denied wrongdoing.

A person close to Hochul said many of these recent conversations were initiated by supporters. This person declined to be called to speak freely.

“Everyone turned to her,” said the person. “You give advice and she listens.” That person said Hochul had heard from state lawmakers, business leaders and other elected officials. This person also stressed that it is the lieutenant governor’s job to be ready to take over for the governor when a transition occurs.

Hochul’s conversations with donors and business leaders mark another change in happiness for Cuomo, who has garnered support – and millions of dollars – from senior executives during his three terms as New York governor.

Cuomo hasn’t ruled out running again in 2022. His election campaign war chest was just over $ 18 million at the end of the first half of the year. Cuomo and Hochul are both Democrats.

State campaign funding records show that Hochul’s lieutenant governor’s campaign account has approximately $ 1.7 million available. Should she become governor before Election Day 2022, she would likely be re-elected for a full term next year.

President Joe Biden and other Democratic Party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have called on Cuomo to step down. Members of the New York State Assembly expect to complete the evidence in their impeachment investigation within a few weeks. Hochul has described the governor’s alleged conduct as “repulsive and illegal” and said it was up to the meeting to determine the next steps.

Meanwhile, many donors who have been with Cuomo’s camp for years have not come to his defense since the report was released last week.

Weeks prior to the release of James’ report, John Yurtchuk, chairman and owner of Buffalo-based tech company Calspan Corp., received a call from Hochul, he said in an interview Monday.

Yurtchuk said he tried to convince Hochul to run for governor.

“I just said, ‘You would be a great governor. I’m just letting you know’ so she knows where her supporters might be. I would stand up for her,” he said.

Yortchuk said, Hochul “kind of said she heard this. She heard this from other people who support her.” He gave Hochul’s $ 5,000 campaign for lieutenant governor in July.

Last week, a media manager and Democratic mega-donor who refused to be named to speak freely said he had heard from Hochul and assumed the conversation meant she was making a connection if she were to become governor. Those close to her have signaled to this executive that they are ready to raise campaign funds for the governor’s race if she should take over Cuomo.

Jeffrey Gural, a property manager who previously contributed to Cuomo’s re-election campaigns, says he spoke to Hochul before James released the report’s findings. Gural publicly tuned Cuomo late last month and gave Hochul’s re-election campaign $ 5,000 in early July.

“I think she would do a great job replacing Andrew. I’ve known her since she ran for Congress and obviously she will have a chance to prove herself once Andrew finds out he’s done,” said Gural in an email on Monday. “Before the report, she never mentioned that she was responsible for anything other than Lt. Gov is running, but I told her I plan to attack Andrew publicly in the hope that my allegations stand and she should be ready. She laughed and I attacked him. “

Gural said Hochul only laughed because she didn’t take his threat to publicly blow up Cuomo seriously.

Another long-time Cuomo donor, who Hochul has known for years, is already preparing to take calls from her if Cuomo leaves office before next year’s elections.

“With his departure now (if it happens), Kathy will be in a strong position as she has several months to build rule over the party before the election shows up,” this donor wrote in an email to CNBC. “If he stayed but didn’t run for re-election, their chances would be severely limited.”

Charleston’s program was nationally recognized, but it was criticized by the city’s mayor when Dr. Gupta was the health commissioner. Public health experts said its closure had a chilling effect on other programs, and kept some from getting off the ground.

As a state health official, Dr. Gupta had no authority to stop the closure. In a 2018 interview with West Virginia Public Broadcasting shortly before he left the health commissioner’s job, Dr. Gupta said that the closure was “not in the best interest of the community” and that needle exchange programs like Charleston’s should not be shut down “reactively.”

But critics faulted him for not using his platform forcefully enough to defend the program.

Gregg Gonsalves, an epidemiologist at Yale University and a longtime AIDS activist, on Tuesday called Dr. Gupta a “terrible choice” who “represents a return to the old ways of thinking about drug use in America, and is not the forward-thinking leader we need right now.”

Other experts said that Dr. Gupta was caught in a difficult situation with the battle over the syringe exchange. Mr. Raymond, while describing the closure of the Charleston program as “a tragedy,” called Dr. Gupta an “excellent choice.” That assessment was echoed by Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, a public health expert at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who worked with Dr. Gupta to address the opioid crisis in West Virginia.

“He knows the value of syringe service programs, he understands the evidence on harm reduction and he is very supportive,” Dr. Sharfstein said. “West Virginia is a very difficult environment for discussion of these topics, and he had to navigate under those constraints.”

The White House announced the selection of Dr. Gupta in a statement on Tuesday, along with 10 other nominations, including that of Jeff Flake, the former Republican senator from Arizona, to be the ambassador to Turkey and that of the writer Atul Gawande to a post at the U.S. Agency for International Development.

New Musical About 19th-Century New York Plans Broadway Run

“Paradise Square,” a new musical that explores racial relations in 19th-century New York.

Revised and in development for a decade, the show is about a long-gone slum in Lower Manhattan, Five Points, where free black residents and Irish immigrants coexisted prior to the Civil War until the draft of 1863.

The musical isn’t just about the history of New York City, it’s also about the history of music and dance. It features songs by Stephen Foster, a prominent 19th century American songwriter who spent time at Five Points towards the end of his life, and credits the Five Points community with a role in the origins of tap dancing. (Tap is an American dance form that is widely believed to have roots in the British Isles and Africa; it has a complex and gritty history, but the Five Points dance cellars were an important development site for the form.)

“Paradise Square” is a comeback offer from famous Canadian producer Garth Drabinsky, who won three Tony Awards in the 1990s but was later convicted of fraud. He was serving time in a Canadian prison; Charges in the United States were later dismissed.

The musical is set to play Joaquina Kalukango, a Tony nominee for “Slave Play,” as the owner of the saloon where much of the action takes place. Other actors include Chilina Kennedy (“Beautiful”), John Dossett (a Tony candidate for “Gypsy”), Sidney DuPont (“Beautiful”), AJ Shively (“Bright Star”), Nathaniel Stampley (“The Color Purple”) , Gabrielle McClinton (“Pippin”) and Jacob Fishel (“Violinist on the Roof”).

The Broadway run is slated to begin previewing on February 22nd and open at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on March 20th. Prior to the pandemic, the musical was slated to capitalize up to $ 13.5 million, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission; A spokesman said actual capitalization is likely to be a little lower.

The show has a complex production history and an evolving creative team led by director Moisés Kaufman (best known as creator of “The Laramie Project”) and choreographer Bill T. Jones (a two-time Tony winner for “Fela!” And “Spring Awakening”). It is based on a musical called “Hard Times” that was conceived by Larry Kirwan, lead singer of Black 47, and performed in 2012 at the Cell Theater. Then it was produced as “Paradise Square” at the Berkeley Repertory Theater in 2019 and this fall, before it moves to Broadway, it is slated to run for five weeks at the James M. Nederlander Theater in Chicago.

The book is now attributed to four authors: Kirwan and three playwrights, Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, and Craig Lucas. The score, which includes both original songs and songs attributed to Foster, now has three authors: Jason Howland, Nathan Tysen, and Masi Asare.

Kaufman said the interruption to the pandemic gave the creative team “an opportunity to think”.

“At Berkeley we learned our story was epic, but we had to keep focusing on our individual characters,” he said. “And that is the work that has taken place.”
