South Africa races to halt third Covid wave as its financial outlook improves

South African economic activity has rebounded quicker than expected in recent months and the rand is the strongest-performing emerging market currency this year, but the country is racing to roll out Covid-19 vaccines as a third wave looms.

In its Financial Stability Review on Thursday, the South African Reserve Bank said the economy was continuing to rebound from a 2020 recession that saw gross domestic product contract by 7%, its steepest decline for over a century.

“Positive data releases, an uptick in global economic activity, robust international trade, elevated commodity prices and improved mobility” led NKC African Economics to upgrade its first-quarter GDP forecast to a 1.4% quarterly expansion, up from a previous forecast of a 3.3% contraction. NKC analysts now expect GDP to grow by 3.1% in 2021.

The industrial sector, particularly mining and manufacturing, has demonstrated positive growth rates on the back of increased global demand and high commodity prices 

“Google Mobility data, which has proven to be a good indicator of economic activity, has improved to its best levels since the coronavirus shock occurred,” NKC senior economist Pieter du Preez highlighted in a note Wednesday.

Third wave risks

The major ratings agencies have all reaffirmed their ratings for South Africa over the past week, but Fitch noted that although the fiscal accounts surprised to the upside on both the fourth quarter of 2020 and first quarter of 2021, the country still faces “substantial risks to debt stabilization.”

S&P also highlighted structural complaints, a lack of economic reforms and a sluggish vaccination drive as hindrances to medium-term growth potential.

The Treasury therefore finds itself “between a rock and a hard place,” du Preez added, since overspending could send out a signal that authorities are not serious about fiscal consolidation.

Roaring rand

Any sign of fading commitment to this austerity drive would exert pressure on the rand, Capital Economics senior emerging markets economist Jason Tuvey highlighted in a recent note.

The rand has soared on the back of higher metals prices, and was trading up at around 13.76 to the dollar by Monday morning. 

However, Capital Economics analysts said in a note Thursday that “the star performance of the rand is unlikely to last as we expect most commodity prices to fall back, and that U.S. long-term yields will begin to rise again, putting renewed pressure on EM currencies.”

“In addition, we think the SARB will not tighten policy as quickly as investors now discount, and that concerns about South Africa’s fiscal situation will eventually resurface.”

Capital Economics anticipates that the rand will weaken to around 15.5 to the dollar by the end of the year.

India’s Covid-19 cases are on the rise again and the country’s richest state is hit hard.

Maharashtra – home of India’s financial capital Mumbai – reported more than 248,000 new cases in just seven days, according to CNBC’s calculation of government data.

The country’s second most populous state accounted for 57% of all cases reported in India over the same period. Infection cases have increased since mid-February, but the death rate remains relatively low.

There are more than 580,000 active cases in total in India, or about 4.78% of all positive cases, according to the daily update from the Ministry of Health on Thursday. Five states – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, and Punjab – account for 78.9% of all active cases in India, most of them in the western state of Maharashtra.

The Maharashtra government imposed a curfew last Sunday and banned all gatherings, including political and religious ones. A mask mandate was also enforced.

As authorities debate further restrictions to curb the spread of the virus, local media reports say a full state lockdown – similar to last year’s nationwide lockdown – may not be in sight.

Billionaire businessman Anand Mahindra, chairman of the Mumbai-based conglomerate Mahindra Group, said on Twitter this week that a lockdown would harm “the poor, migrant workers and small businesses.” Instead, he urged Maharashtra’s prime minister to focus on building hospitals and health infrastructure and avoiding Covid-related deaths.

Economic impact limited

The economic impact of the second wave of coronavirus infection in India appears to be localized for now, Citi economists said in a report this week.

India is also preparing for upcoming state elections and regional festivals, which often attract large crowds, emphasized Radhika Rao, Indian economist at DBS Group in Singapore. She said increased preventive measures are needed to slow the spread of the virus.

In a recent notice, she said the ongoing vaccination campaign may act as a speed breaker to slow the outbreak.

Vaccination drive

WHO races to include Ebola within the DRC because it confirms a 3rd case

The World Health Organization confirmed a third case of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Friday as health officials attempt to vaccinate residents and contain the possible outbreak.

Earlier this week, the global health agency confirmed that a woman has died of the disease in Butembo, a city in North Kivu province and the epicenter of a previous Ebola outbreak that was declared over in June. WHO has since confirmed two more cases, including one more person who has died, said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, on Friday.

The number of people who may have been exposed to the virus rose from over 70 on Monday to 182 on Friday, Ryan said. He added that all but three of these people had been contacted and more than half of them had previously been vaccinated against Ebola in previous outbreaks.

“We’re seeing some benefits from previous vaccination, but of course we need to look at how long the vaccine protects,” he said.

WHO is “still unclear about the original community source” of the first Ebola case, Ryan said, adding that the National Institute for Biomedical Research of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is sequencing samples of the virus at its main laboratory in Kinshasa to see if the new cases are associated with the most recent butembo outbreak. Ryan said the results are expected over the weekend.

The Ebola outbreak, declared in June, lasted almost two years. It was the second largest in the world and at the time of its end there were a total of 3,481 cases and 2,299 deaths, according to the WHO.

WHO noted that efforts to respond to outbreaks in North Kivu province have been particularly difficult due to the ongoing violent conflict in the area, which is occupied by over 100 different armed groups, according to Human Rights Watch.

Ryan said WHO is working with non-governmental organizations, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and other United Nations agencies such as UNICEF to respond to the new Ebola cases.

Suddenly the sim racing audience was big enough to deserve attention but too new for marketers to capitalize on. Sponsors took different approaches, but all targeted an elusive new audience. NASCAR’s fan base has declined with age since 2005. Sim Racing attracts a younger and more racially diverse audience – attractive to sponsors and leagues.

“It’s really hard to reach this 18- to 35-year-old,” said Patrick Daugherty, who manages Valvoline sponsorships. “Gaming over-indices with young DIY enthusiasts.”

The company signed with Parker Kligerman, a celebrity racing driver and eNASCAR driver, before Covid-19 hit. “The audience and engagement exceeded our expectations,” said Daugherty. “We were really lucky and will renew ourselves with these guys in 2021.”

Despite being NASCAR’s official grill, Pit Boss Grills couldn’t afford to sponsor a front-line racer that is said to cost up to $ 35 million. That has changed with eNASCAR.

“This gave us the opportunity to become a major sponsor,” said Carlos Padilla, Director of Brand Partnerships. “It made it possible for us to be on a live broadcast about a car, if you want to call it that, at a price that is feasible for a company of our size.”

It cost four numbers per race to be seen by a million TV viewers – a bargain.

Discouraging iRacing seems like a circuit’s best interests, but Richmond Raceway first sponsored a team about three years ago. It built a simulator in a disused racing car for fans to try out. This innovation prompted Daytona International Speedway to borrow the car.

Not only has this raised Richmond’s profile, but sponsors’ money has also turned it into a five-figure profit.

“Marketing was the original goal,” said Brent S. Gambill, a spokesman who previously worked for the route and now for NASCAR’s mid-Atlantic region. “When it started, we spent money to be part of something. In the second year we made money. “

The online audience gives sponsors a chance to measure responses to certain offers, taglines, and prices in ways that television doesn’t.

However, a tsunami of data is not always helpful. “It would be fantastic for us if we could say that a million people watched last week and bought 200,000 cars this week. That makes it difficult to compare Sim Racing’s sales performance with Real Racing’s. But it can be a contentious question for a couple of reasons.

On the one hand, the two worlds are intertwined – the performance on the virtual track can have real effects.

When Darrell Wallace Jr., known as Bubba, finished a virtual race in frustration in April, sponsor Blue-Emu dropped him and tweeted in part: “Bye bye Bubba. The second reason is that while winning helps, it is not the only reason a fan will buy a car product.

“It’s not just about the literal oil,” said Eric Schwartz, a professor of marketing at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. “It’s about being a trustworthy brand that understands this world of racing.”

After all, Sim’s simplest brand attraction is that it delivers viewers. “This is a way to get eyeballs for the brand to keep track of,” Schwartz said. “If Valvoline doesn’t sponsor a team, the competitor will.”

It will take time to know if sim race fans are turning into real racing enthusiasts and vice versa, but Fox has five sim races planned for its FS1 network this year.

“You have so many options with iRacing,” said Fox’s Zager, envisioning a field race one week and Daytona the next. “ESports became a very big buzzword when the pandemic hit,” he added. “But iRacing just went to the front of the field and no one caught up.”

DraftKings, Drone Racing League partnership enables you to guess on drone races

Sports betting company DraftKings and the Drone Racing League announced an exclusive deal on Friday that will allow people to bet on drone racing. It should also help DraftKings appeal to a younger audience.

DRL is a first-person-view racing league in which drone pilots race devices through neon-lit tracks and compete for the prize money. DRL did not provide the amount it pays its competitors, but in a 2017 tournament the prize amount reached $ 100,000.

The two sides did not provide any financial terms for the deal.

People in Colorado, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Tennessee, and West Virginia can bet on drone races from their cell phones.

DRL was founded in 2015 and has piqued the interest of younger sports fans over the years. The plan is to wrap up season five and hold a “Level 14” race on Saturday, followed by its championship event, which has not yet been announced.

DRLs used in events are designed and built by DRL. Identical models are built for each race. Each drone is worth roughly $ 2,000 and can travel up to 90 miles per hour.

DraftKings officials told CNBC that they had tested DRL’s betting interest with their free popularity pools offered in November and were happy with the results. The company had to switch to non-traditional sports offers when the leagues closed last spring due to Covid-19.

By targeting DRL, DraftKings will have access to Generation Z consumers who are still struggling to get customers.

DRL uses the label “tech-setter” to define the audience and describes the 16- to 34-year-old age group as predominantly male and “deeply passionate about technology, science and games”. This group is also considered a sports fanatic who doesn’t follow traditional leagues or sports as closely as millennials.

According to DRL, this age group is similar to the current fan base.

“You are young, influential and tech-savvy,” said DRL President Rachel Jacobson in an interview with CNBC on Friday. Jacobson added that the league will unlock the “next generation of betting fans” for DraftKings.

According to the Wasserman Media Group, DRL fans place a sports bet three times more often and are 90% more interested in sports betting than the average global sports fan.

The Drone League has media rights with NBC Sports and Sky Sports, both of which are owned by CNBC’s parent company Comcast. It also has a streaming contract with Twitter to host its preflight shows. The league said its Thursday show had grown to 193,000 viewers, up from 75,000 viewers during the first show in December.

Jacobson said the company added eight new sponsorships in 2020, including sports drinks maker Bodyarmor and a technology deal with T-Mobile, including building a 5G drone for the league.
