Oil services company Baker Hughes sees energy demand recover in the second half of 2021, managing director Lorenzo Simonelli said this week.

“We are cautiously optimistic,” he told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick on Monday.

He noted that some countries are still linked to coronavirus, which decimated demand in 2020 and may weigh on fuel sales in the first half of the year.

However, he expects demand to recover in the second half of the year due to the launch of the vaccine and the improvement in the economic situation.

The CEO’s views were in line with OPEC’s January oil market report that vaccinations generate some “upside optimism” and that forecasts for 2021 “assume a healthy recovery in economic activity”.

The alliance expects global oil demand to increase by 5.9 million barrels per day to an average of 95.9 million barrels per day.

The International Energy Agency predicts that global oil demand will recover this year to 96.6 million bdp. It lowered its forecast slightly, citing rising Covid cases and new bans.

As vaccines put fundamentals on a stronger growth path, it will take longer for demand to fully recover, the IEA said.

Opportunities in oil investments

Simonelli said there would be “investment opportunities” when the rebound takes place.

“It will be different geographically in different places,” he said. “If we look at the lower-cost pools, look at the Middle East. That is where you will see some of the increases in production.”

Brazil and Norway could also increase production in the second half of 2021, he added.

With President Joe Biden making tackling the Covid-19 crisis his top priority, American voters are a little more optimistic about the pandemic than they were last fall, according to a new poll by NBC News.

Still, many respondents are dissatisfied with the sluggish introduction of the vaccine in the country, and a majority blame the federal government, according to the survey.

Poll results released Thursday showed that 38% of registered voters believe the worst of the health crisis is behind the country, while 44% believe the worst is yet to come. In a poll conducted just before the November elections, those numbers were 25% and 55%, respectively.

In his inaugural address on Wednesday, Biden warned of a difficult battle against the impending coronavirus.

“We are entering what is possibly the toughest and deadliest phase of the virus,” he said.

The country has at least 193,600 new coronavirus cases and at least 3,030 Covid deaths every day, based on a 7-day average calculated by CNBC using data from Johns Hopkins University. New, more infectious strains of the virus have emerged in the United States. At least 406,000 Americans have died from the virus since the pandemic started early last year.

Biden’s plan

His incoming health officials have expressed dismay at the state of the federal vaccine distribution plan.

Adopting a new Covid aid package will be a challenge for the new Congress and the White House. Democrats have a small majority in both houses of Congress, and Republicans are skeptical about spending increases.

LONDON – Health systems around the world are struggling to cope with the rising number of Covid-19 infections as they race against the clock to vaccinate the vulnerable.

The three vaccines currently approved for use in large Western economies all require two separate vaccinations. Given the limited supply, governments are considering controversial tactics such as increasing the time between doses in order to get at least one dose to as many people as possible.

J & J’s late trial

Johnson & Johnson is expected to deliver preliminary late-stage study results for its single-dose Covid vaccine candidate by the end of January. If the push turns out to be safe and effective, the company will aim to have at least 1 billion doses by the end of the year.

The J&J vaccine was developed by the company’s Belgian unit, Janssen Pharmaceutica, and is based on adenovirus viral vector technology, the same approach used to make the Oxford-AstraZeneca University vaccine. This type of shot is easier to scale than those developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which are based on messenger RNA technology.

Shore Capital health analyst Adam Barker said in an email to CNBC last week, “The J&J vaccine is more like the AstraZeneca vaccine, but uses only one dose. So we know this approach works (viral vector) and we know the goal will work. But we have to see what a dose does. “

Supply contracts

The company is committed to selling the vaccine on a non-profit basis for emergency use.

J&J entered into an agreement with the United States in August 2020 to supply 100 million doses of the vaccine after FDA approval or approval and the option to purchase up to 200 million additional doses under a subsequent agreement.

The UK negotiated a deal in August to purchase an initial 30 million doses of the J&J vaccine, with the option to purchase up to 22 million additional doses. The EU signed a contract with J&J in October to supply up to 400 million cans.

CEO says Hawaiian Airlines is optimistic on 2021, new flight routes

After a bloody year for the aviation industry, Peter Ingram, CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, told CNBC that he believes it can only be done from here.

Airlines have spent much of 2020 cutting routes and cutting flights as the demand for travel has fallen due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, companies like Delta and United Airlines have announced some new additions in the past few months.

Hawaiian Airlines joins the battle with new nonstop flights from Honolulu to Austin, Texas. Orlando, Florida and Ontario, California will be added in the spring. The Honolulu-based company expects air traffic to recover in the new year and is trying to take advantage of the population development in the southern states.

“The reason it is time to announce three new routes is that … we are very optimistic for 2021,” he said at Closing Bell. “These are places we’ve been looking for. They have good demand for Hawaii.”

Austin has established itself among the top tech scenes in the country, competing with the traditional tech ecosystem for which the San Francisco Bay Area is known. The Texas capital has caught the interest of several tech companies that have either opened factories there or announced plans to relocate their headquarters from California.

Earlier this month, Oracle, a mainstay of Silicon Valley, announced that the company would move its headquarters to Austin. It is among a number of companies planning to relocate outside of California.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has moved his personal residence to Texas and has split most of his time between Austin and Boca Chica, where SpaceX facilities are located. Tesla, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and Musk’s tunnel start-up Boring Co. both operate in Austin.

Apple is also expanding its presence in the Texas capital, where it is investing $ 1 billion in a 3 million square foot campus. The site is expected to employ 5,000 people and is due to open in 2022.

“I’ve seen coverage in your air of how Austin is booming as a technology hub these days, and we think a lot of those people want to go to Hawaii,” Ingram said. “Same goes for Orlando with a growing population.”

Florida has been a long-standing hotspot for retirees looking to move, and the state’s population has grown steadily. Due to US population shifts, Texas is expected to add three seats for its US home delegation and Florida is expected to get two seats, the Associated Press reported.

Democratic Governor Phil Murphy was optimistic about the launch of a Covid-19 vaccine in New Jersey on Monday, but urged state residents to continue to follow public health protocols as hospital admissions increase.

“We’re still in the thick of it,” Murphy said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box”. The vaccine distribution “is really good news, but I think the next six or eight weeks will be very difficult in New Jersey and our country.”

“There’s a lot of fatigue, a lot of private diffusion, lots of holidays, cold weather – all of this is conspiratorial. In the near future, I’d just … ask people to do the right things and keep their watch,” Murphy added.

The governor’s comments came when the first Americans were vaccinated against Covid-19 outside of clinical trials. The Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency clearance for the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech on Friday, which kicked off the complex logistics network that allowed health care workers in several states to take their first admissions on Monday morning.

In New Jersey, the first vaccinations for hospital staff will be given Tuesday morning at Newark University Hospital, according to Murphy. The state will initially receive 76,000 doses, which is enough for 38,000 people to get vaccinated as it requires two shots. From there, Murphy said the state will receive “an increased allotment” of Pfizer BioNTech doses each week “until it plateaus” earlier this year.
