China box-office file reveals international pent-up demand for films

Imax broke its box office records over the weekend of the New Year celebrations in China and the results predict what will happen when more US theaters resume operations this summer, CEO Rich Gelfond told CNBC on Tuesday.

The company, which produces immersive movie experiences, said it grossed $ 25 million between Friday and Sunday, up 45% from its pre-pandemic record.

“It tells you [that] If it’s safe to go outside and people want to go, run to the movies, “said Gelfond, who appeared on Closing Bell after the deal on Wall Street ended.

Detective Chinatown 3, a comedy adventure postponed from the release of Lunar New Year last year, captured a large portion of Imax ticket sales during the three-day period. The film grossed $ 23.5 million, the best results Imax has ever seen for a Chinese film. The action films “A Writer’s Odyssey” and “New Gods: Nezha Reborn” have also helped Imax hit both gross admissions and gross sales highs.

Coming from the news, Imax shares rose more than 6% on Tuesday, the best day since November. The stock closed at $ 19.85, up more than 5% after hours.

Imax took in more than 1 million people in cinemas in China on Friday, the best one-day attendance ever recorded. The results come despite capacity constraints that persist in entertainment businesses in China. The $ 25 million Imax brought in at the box office was better than the comparable opening week of 2019 that preceded the coronavirus pandemic.

Most theaters in China have a 75% capacity limit, while parts of the country with higher broadcasts of Covid-19 are limited to 50%. US theater restrictions vary by state. Limitations range from 25% capacity in Minnesota to 50% in Indiana to 100% in Alaska. This is based on data held by the National Association of Theater Owners.

The seven-day New Year holiday ends on Wednesday. Theaters in China closed around this time last year when the country shut down in response to the fast-spreading virus discovered in Wuhan city, Hubei province in late 2019.

The movie frenzy was fueled by China’s traditional travel season, which has largely been suspended due to coronavirus restrictions. Millions of time spent in the cinema with scrapped travel plans.

Gelfond said Imax expected strong participation in China over the weekend.

“I think the only thing you can say is the pent-up demand that people just get tired of sitting on their couches and watching streaming or whatever else they’ve been doing,” he said. “I think they are just happy to get out and I think that gives the rest of the world a guess.”

In the midst of the pandemic, Imax’s 2020 sales fell 74% from the first three quarters of last year through September. The company is expected to report fourth quarter and full year 2020 performance next month.

Gelfond said in December that the release of US films in 2021, including a number of films postponed from first releases last year, would be an “embarrassment of fortune” for Imax if the country’s theaters closed Should be opened at the beginning of the year.

According to the online ticketing platform Maoyan Entertainment, mainland China posted holiday week sales of 6.77 billion yuan, or $ 1.05 billion, on Tuesday. That figure surpassed the record 5.9 billion yuan in the same period of 2019.

Since the theaters reopened in June, box office revenues have increased. Coronavirus cases have declined sharply in countries like China, Australia and South Korea, and movie ticket sales have increased.

Global movie ticket sales decreased 70% year over year in 2020. Ticket sales in the Asia-Pacific region accounted for approximately 51% of global sales, up from 41% in 2019, based on information from Comscore and Gower Street. The US and Canadian box office sales accounted for just 18% of sales in 2020, compared to 30% in 2019.

The Greatest Motion pictures and TV Exhibits Coming to Amazon, HBO Max, Hulu and Extra in February

“The Muppet Show” seasons 1-5

Start streaming: 19th of February

Fans of puppeteer and filmmaker Jim Henson have waited a while for his TV series, “The Muppet Show,” – perhaps his most enduring masterpiece – to hit a subscription streaming service. For five seasons and 120 episodes between 1976 and 1981, Henson and his team of writers, craftsmen and performers brought joy and humor to the small screen by imagining a low-rent variety show directed by high-profile madmen. From its catchy songs to a number of A-list guest hosts (including pretty much every well-known entertainer of the era), The Muppet Show helped define popular culture of the day while remaining family-friendly. The full series has never been released in a home video format and is not currently aired on any US cable network. Hence, this addition to Disney + is an important event.

‘Bliss’

Start streaming: February 5th

In his films “Another Earth” and “I Origins”, writer and director Mike Cahill thought about subdued character studies that circumvent the boundaries of science fiction, about big ideas – alternative universes, the existence of God. In his latest film, Bliss, Owen Wilson plays Greg, a grumpy divorce officer who is in the middle of one of the worst days of his life when he meets Isabel (Salma Hayek), a homeless eccentric who convinces him they are alive Computer simulation controlled with the help of special crystals. Is she right, or are Greg and Isabel both mentally ill drug addicts? Cahill leaves this question unanswered for as long as possible while both scenarios seem plausible. The result is an odd journey through multiple realities that moves faster than Cahill’s previous films, but ultimately still deals with the existential fear of ordinary people.

‘Tell me your secrets’

Start streaming: 19th of February

The secrets in the title of the mystery / suspense series “Tell Me Your Secrets” are buried deep and are slowly being discovered over the course of the first season of the series with 10 episodes. Across several interwoven storylines, creator Harriet Warner follows three main characters: a hidden woman (Lily Rabe), a mother (Amy Brenneman) who is stubbornly struggling to find out what happened to her long-missing daughter, and an offer from a psychopath (Hamish Linklater) his help with law enforcement to atone for old crimes. The sometimes surprising and often grim details of the connections between these people and the mistakes they seek to make up to advance the narrative of a crime show how difficult it is for victims of violence and trauma to get on with their lives.

“Nomadland”

Start streaming: 19th of February

Slice-of-life drama Nomadland, which is likely to be a strong contender for the Academy Awards this year, is a vibrant and emotional portrayal of a growing American subculture: people who live in mobile homes and roam the country and working in succession from seasonal jobs. Frances McDormand plays a young widow who has spent most of her life in a closed factory and is now getting used to living on the street, with the help of some fellow travelers who have turned their circumstances from paycheck to paycheck into a quasi- communal lifestyle. The author and director Chloé Zhao, who easily adapts the non-fiction book by Jessica Bruder, avoids major confrontations and serious conspiracies and instead emphasizes the everyday stress and the unexpected wonders of a life on the edge.

“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”

Start streaming: February 26th

The source material for the historical drama “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” distinguishes it from a typical biopic. Instead of covering a person’s entire life, director Lee Daniels and screenwriter Suzan-Lori Parks adapted passages from Johann Hari’s exposé “Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs,” in which the author uses profiles of some noted addicts including Billie Holiday and traffickers for criticizing the way some governments have approached drug trafficking. Grammy-nominated R&B singer Andra Day gives an exciting performance as jazz legend Holiday, who scandalized the establishment with the anti-lynch song “Strange Fruit” that – according to this raw and hard hitting film – some reactionaries in the US government conspired to use their drug habit to smother them.

‘The investigation’

Start streaming: February 1st

The accomplished Danish screenwriter and director Tobias Lindholm explores what happened after the dismembered body of Swedish journalist Kim Wall was found scattered in Koge Bay, Denmark in 2017 in The Investigation, a six-part miniseries Lindholm dramatizes the incident itself not, which ultimately led to the arrest and conviction of entrepreneur Peter Madsen, who invited Wall to interview him shortly before they disappeared on his submarine. Instead, he follows the two cops in the case (played by Soren Malling and Pilou Asbaek) as they tenaciously pursue the gruesome leads and sacrifice their personal lives in the name of justice. “The Investigation” is another type of procedure that details how difficult it is for the victim’s family and detectives to create a case.

“Earwig and the Witch”

Start streaming: February 5th

With this adaptation of a novel by Diana Wynne Jones, whose book “Howl’s Moving Castle” was previously adapted by Ghibli’s co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, the animators at the venerable Japanese studio Ghibli are making their first foray into full computer animation. Son Goro directed Earwig and the Witch, the story of a courageous and bossy 10 year old orphan who was adopted by a pair of curious gruff adults who teach her about the rock and roll and occult history of their birth family. Fans of the Miyazakis and Ghibli may initially resist the look of this film, which differs from classics like “Spirited Away” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service”. But “Earwig” deals with similar subjects like spiritual wonder and youthful independence, and there is something special about Goro Miyazaki’s visual style that is much simpler than Pixar’s fine detail.

“Judas and the Black Messiah”

Start streaming: February 12th

In 1969, Fred Hampton – the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party – was killed in a police raid of his Chicago home after an extensive federal law enforcement campaign to identify him as a dangerous radical. In the political drama “Judas and the Black Messiah” Daniel Kaluuya gives an outstanding performance as Hampton and is compared scene by scene with Lakeith Stanfield as William O’Neal, a petty crook recruited by the FBI. Writer-director Shaka King and co-writer Will Berson capture the revolutionary passion of the time and subtly refer to the parallels to this day in the angry arguments about overzealous police officers and systemic racism. The film focuses on Hampton’s complex, passionate, and surprisingly openly armed political philosophies, as well as the circumstances that would have compelled a man who would otherwise have been a devout student to betray him.

The 2020 field workplace was dominated by previous motion pictures, early blockbuster success

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence star in “Bad Boys For Life”.

Sony

The studio with the highest box office in 2020 delayed most of its film until 2021.

After combing Comscore’s data, Sony became the top earner in a year marked by a global pandemic. The studio accounted for 22.2% of the domestic film market and had ticket sales of nearly $ 500 million.

“If you need a symbol of how unusual 2020 was at the box office, look no further than the fact that Sony’s ‘Bad Boys For Life,’ a mid-January release, would be high on the box office list.” all year, “said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

The film grossed $ 206.3 million, a far cry from the $ 858.3 million in revenue generated by the top-grossing Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Sony’s market share was boosted by ticket sales of “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Little Women,” both released in 2019. The sequel to “Jumanji” was the fourth highest grossing film of the year, while “Little Women” was the eighth.

If you just look at the box office, where the pandemic had to close cinemas by the end of the year, Sony only raised around $ 29 million after March 20.

“The 2020 box office year had a split personality,” said Dergarabedian. “It had a strong market before the pandemic, but its development was badly affected when the theaters shut down in mid-March. It then struggled through the spring, summer and fall with a severely limited number of open theaters and a notable shortage of new films.”

The global coronavirus pandemic has paralyzed the domestic box office, forcing studios to postpone blockbusters and place other major feature films on premium video-on-demand or branded streaming services.

Studios that were able to release films before the pandemic closed theaters in March stuck to box office earnings and remained the top earners of the year, according to Comscore. These studios’ grossing results were also boosted by films released in 2019 but continued to be in theaters in early 2020.

In fact, the lion’s share of $ 2.2 billion in the 2020 box office was generated in the first three months of the year. From January 1 to March 19, the US and Canadian box offices achieved ticket sales of $ 1.8 billion, according to Comscore data. The remaining $ 400 million was raised between April and December.

“The pandemic has fundamentally changed the fate of studios and their films, which were either cut midstream in March or postponed for 2021,” Dergarabedian said. “This unforeseen and unfortunate turn of events has made the promising and possibly record-breaking year at the Multiplex one of the toughest for the company.”

Just a second

Universal was the second highest recording studio in 2020 and achieved a market share of 21.9%. The box office difference between Sony and Universal was only $ 5.8 million.

Universal delayed most of its films until late 2020 or early 2021. However, when the theaters reopened and it became clear that audiences weren’t returning en masse, the studio changed its strategy.

Contracts were signed with several major theater chains in the US and Canada that would enable him to shorten the time his films take to theaters. This allowed the studio to put its films on premium video-on-demand earlier or on its streaming service Peacock, and monetize its film among consumers who were unwilling to leave their homes.

Most of the box office portion of the Comcast-owned studio came from the war drama “1917”, which was released in late 2019. The film received the Oscar for Best Picture in February 2020, which enticed moviegoers to watch it in droves. The film raised $ 158 million in 2020, making it the studio’s highest grossing film and the second highest grossing domestic box office film for the year.

Universal had two major releases prior to the theater closing: “Dolittle” at $ 78 million and “The Invisible Man” at $ 70 million.

A handful of films also hit theaters during the pandemic, including “Trolls World Tour”, “Freaky” and “The Croods: A New Age”. Together, these films made just under $ 50 million.

The studio also benefited from the new releases of “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park,” which increased the company’s total sales by approximately $ 10 million. These films, which originally debuted in 1975 and 1993, were among the top 20 highest-grossing films to hit theaters between late March and December 2020.

The bronze medal

In 2019 the Walt Disney Company released seven films that exceeded $ 1 billion worldwide and accounted for nearly 40% of the domestic box office market share. Between the distribution of Disney films and 20th Century Fox’s newly acquired real estate, which was the largest part of a studio, the company had made more than $ 4 billion in ticket sales.

Just a year later, Disney’s stake shrank to 20% and rose from top cashier to third best after just $ 442 million.

Disney had a jam-packed series of films for 2020. Between the Disney production studios and the newly acquired Fox studio, the company should release around two dozen films. However, the pandemic caused the company to make new plans.

For the most part, Disney pushed out its 2020 titles, including two major Marvel films, “Jungle Cruise” directed by Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson, and an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s “West Side Story”.

While the majority of Disney’s films were released by 2021, the company offered its live-action version of “Mulan” for $ 30 on its streaming service Disney + in September and posted its Oscar contender, the Pixar film “Soul”, on the platform for free.

While Comscore is separating Disney and 20th Century as two different distributors, CNBC has decided to combine their ticket sales as both are owned by Disney. Together they have the third largest market share or around 20%.

According to data from Comscore, Disney, as a single distributor, had ticket sales of $ 255 million last year compared to the 20th century grossing $ 187 million. If these numbers had not been combined, Disney would have the fourth largest market share and the 20th century the fifth.

Warner Bros., which sold $ 258 million in ticket sales last year, would have finished third. Warner Bros. combines Disney and the 20th century and is now fourth.

Rey and Kylo Ren compete against each other in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Disney

Disney’s top-grossing film of 2020 was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which was released in late December 2019. The film, valued at $ 128 million in 2020, was the fifth highest grossing film at the domestic box office.

As with Sony, the majority of Disney’s total box office came from films released earlier this year or holdovers from 2019. “Onward,” “Call of the Wild,” “Frozen 2” and “Spies in Disguise “Everyone contributed to this transport in the first few months of 2020.

“The New Mutants” was Disney’s top-grossing theatrical release during the pandemic. The film had sales of approximately $ 32 million.

Disney also had a number of newly released films that added to its record, including “Hocus Pocus”, “Star Wars”, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Black Panther”. Those titles accounted for nearly $ 30 million from Disney’s Transport.

Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of NBCUniversal and CNBC.

Six Superhero Motion pictures to Stream

Last month, Warner Bros. released the coronavirus-delayed Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel to the 2017 hit Wonder Woman. The action-adventure film did relatively well at the box office (where theaters are open), although it’s also available for a limited time on the HBO Max streaming service. Compared to the enthusiastic response to the first “Wonder Woman” film, however, the sequel has generated mixed reactions. Some critics and comic fans complain about the improbable plot and length of the film.

For those who felt disappointed with Wonder Woman 1984, here are six more superhero options to stream – from the popular and beloved films to films that have never received the huge audiences they deserve.

Stream it on Disney +; Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu or YouTube.

Movie audiences developed a taste for superheroes back in 1991 when Walt Disney’s Buena Vista Pictures didn’t attract a crowd for this charmingly old-fashioned pulp exercise. Based on a little-known comic by illustrator Dave Stevens, “The Rocketeer” is a fast-paced potboiler in a 1930s Hollywood full of glamorous swells and optimistic doers – including a bombshell actress Jenny (Jennifer Connelly) and her stunt pilot friend (Billy Campbell). Director Joe Johnston sheds light and zips on the film’s Nazi battle – something he would do again 20 years later with the mighty “Captain America: The First Avenger”.

Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu or YouTube.

A little more than a decade before director Sam Raimi was making his own twisted version of an R-rated Marvel Comics film about a mad scientist driven by tragedy to become a vigilante. clad in an artificial skin that dissolves in the sunlight. Anchored in a piquant Liam Neeson performance (with which he has started the role of the “capable hero who is in search of blood” early in recent years), “Darkman” combines elements of old universal monster films, grainy superhero comics from the 1970s Years and slapstick comedy. Although it is rated R and not suitable for younger viewers, the film is a true original.

In some of the most haunted superhero stories, the powerful among us live in the ordinary world, devoid of costumes or code names. One of the most famous of these is M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable”. Film fans who love this film should definitely seek out the similarly reserved “Fast Color” by writer and director Julia Hart about a family of women who are hiding their extraordinary skills from a government agency that wants to exploit them. Hart and her co-writer / producer Jordan Horowitz give this classic genre premise their own twist by focusing on human relationships and small moments of wonder.

Stream it on HBO Max; Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu or YouTube.

The X-Men film franchise and its Deadpool and Wolverine offshoots were popular but inconsistent. “X-Men: First Class” is the best of the lot because it’s not bogged down by complicated mythology. Instead, the story begins in early 1962, when two young mutant friends with different ideologies work together to recruit more of their own kind. Director Matthew Vaughn gives the picture the glamor of a James Bond film, while James McAvoy (as Professor Charles Xavier) and Michael Fassbender (as Erik “Magneto” Lehnsherr) lead an ace cast in an adventure full of international intrigue.

Given that the superhero genre has become a phenomenon thanks to the ink-stained medium of comics, it is a shame that there have been no more big budget animated superhero films. Oscar winner “Big Hero 6” is a good example of how the exaggerated cartoony illustrations common in animation lend themselves well to kinetic, fantastic action. The film is kid-friendly too, and tells the story of a moody teenage genius who brings together a group of tech-savvy nerds to team up with his adorable squishy super robot Baymax to help uncover a conspiracy. “Big Hero 6” is cute and visually stunning at the same time, and an old-fashioned superhero story full of positivity.

Stream it on HBO Max; Rent or buy it on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Vudu or YouTube.

Comic book aficionados who were disappointed with Wonder Woman 1984 had an excellent alternative to their DC Comics superhero fix last year. In the Birds of Prey spin-off from Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie repeats her role as the delightfully mischievous Gotham City villain Harley Quinn, who teams up with some more virtuous women in an explosive argument with a local mob boss. Director Cathy Yan and screenwriter Christina Hodson charge their film with foul language, bloody violence, and self-referential humor so that while strong female heroes are great, strong female antiheroes can be more fun.
