Dr. Gottlieb says places of work with vaccine mandates do not want extra precautions

Companies that require office workers to get Covid vaccinations are unlikely to need to take additional precautions against the virus even as the Delta variant spikes, Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNBC on Thursday.

“I think companies probably don’t need to take any additional measures right now,” such as: B. regulated virus tests, Gottlieb told co-host Andrew Ross Sorkin in “Squawk Box”.

“The belief is that people who are vaccinated and develop the infection can be contagious early in the course of the infection, but clear the infection faster,” added Gottlieb, who was Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration from 2017 to 2019 Board member at several companies, including vaccine maker Pfizer.

Gottlieb pointed to real evidence in Israel showing that “people who get vaccinated and become infected spread within the household but not outside the household.”

Vaccinated people still need to be vigilant about the virus and get tested if they have a viral illness, he said.

“You can certainly see that infection rates are increasing among the vaccinated population. People who were vaccinated some time ago are more prone to Covid. Eventually, some of these infections will give poor results, ”he said.

The number of companies requiring their employees to vaccinate has increased in recent days, with McDonald’s being the latest corporate giant to put such a policy in place on Wednesday. The vaccination edict of the fast food chain applies to the company’s workforce.

Gottlieb said he expected more companies to follow suit, especially those that want employees to return to the office after more than a year of remote work in the fall. He cited the government’s vaccination requirement for U.S. military personnel and federal employees – as well as the potential full FDA approval of Covid vaccines – as “an added boost to businesses” that will “give them confidence that they have the legal basis to do so” stand in relation to compulsory vaccination. “

The Department of Health and Human Services is ordering Covid-19 vaccine syringes for the agency’s 25,000-plus employees, making it the latest government agency to require vaccinations in response to the global surge in the Delta variant.

The mandate announced Thursday by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra covers the Indian Health Service, the National Institutes of Health, and the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps – three agencies overseen by the department – and staff working with patients in medical or clinical research facilities of the federal government work together.

“Our ultimate goal is the health and safety of the American public, including our federal employees, and vaccines are the best tool we have to protect people from COVID-19, prevent the spread of the Delta variant, and save lives” Becerra said in a statement from HHS.

Members of the commanded corps must also be vaccinated against the virus if they are called to active duty as emergency services. The new mandate follows the agency’s existing religious and medical exemptions for vaccinations against influenza and other diseases.

The decision is made just days after the Pentagon issued a Covid vaccination mandate for all service members to be vaccinated by mid-September. The Department of Veterans Affairs became the first major federal agency to issue a Covid vaccination mandate for health workers last month.

President Joe Biden also announced mandatory vaccination for all federal employees on July 29, giving them the alternative of having weekly coronavirus tests instead of showing proof of vaccination. HHS did not state whether employees could choose to get tested for the coronavirus regularly instead of getting vaccinated.

Company executives are also increasingly exercising vaccine mandates. Companies including Google, Facebook, United Airlines and Tyson Foods are now demanding that some or all of their employees be vaccinated as the number of coronavirus cases in the US has risen recently.

Alaska Airways is contemplating Covid vaccine mandates for workers

Alaska Airlines announced Wednesday that it is considering making Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for employees, according to a company memo that CNBC viewed.

The policy change would make the Seattle-based airline the newest airline to require vaccines for its employees. On Friday, United Airlines became the first major US airline to require vaccines for its employees. Frontier Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines have since issued similar requirements.

Alaska, which has about 20,000 employees, said if it did make vaccines mandatory it would after the Food and Drug Administration fully approved one of the vaccines currently available under emergency approval.

Airline executives recently raised concerns about the rapidly spreading Delta variant of Covid. Southwest Airlines lowered its revenue and profit forecasts on Wednesday and made the spread of the variant due to weaker bookings and increased cancellations.

Delta, Southwest, and American have encouraged, but not mandated, employee vaccination.

“As an employer with a duty to protect you, and given the contagion and health risks of the COVID-19 virus and its variants, we have the right to make that decision and ask you for information about your vaccine status,” Alaska employees said . It was said that there would be exemptions for religious or medical reasons, similar to other companies.

Covid vaccine mandates sweep throughout company America as delta surges

The U.S. government may not require that everyone get Covid-19 vaccines, but large employers across corporate America are stepping into the void.

More than a dozen large U.S. corporations, including Walmart, Google, Tyson Foods and United Airlines, have recently announced vaccine mandates for some or all of their workers.

“With rapidly rising COVID-19 case counts of contagious, dangerous variants leading to increasing rates of severe illness and hospitalization among the U.S. unvaccinated population, this is the right time to take the next step to ensure a fully vaccinated workforce,” Dr. Claudia Coplein, Tyson’s chief medical officer, said in a statement Tuesday.

The U.S. reported a seven-day average of more than 108,600 new cases per day as of Sunday, up 36% from a week earlier, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. With 83% of sequenced coronavirus cases nationwide stemming from the delta variant, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates, vaccinations are seen by health officials and corporate management as the safest way to get employees who have been working remotely back to the office.

Though some employers now unilaterally mandate vaccines, most have limited the scope of their guidance to certain offices or specific groups of workers.

Google and Facebook have mandated Covid immunizations for anyone returning to their U.S. offices. Walmart, which has 1.6 million U.S. employees, has imposed a vaccine mandate for all corporate and management staff, while store employees must wear masks in high-risk counties.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon outlined the retailer’s plans to keep “gradually coming back into our office spaces with the idea of being closer to pre-pandemic levels after Labor Day.”

In April 2020, a Gallup poll found that 70% of employees surveyed were working from home. Companies are attempting to bring their workforce back into the office, but some have already begun pushing back their return dates as Covid case counts surge. Late last month, Google postponed its return to office deadline to Oct. 18, a delay of more than a month.

“Although I’m not a big fan of mandates, we need to use a variety of incentives to encourage as many people as possible to practice effective infection control,” said Dr. Stephen Morse, a professor of epidemiology at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “If that’s the best or only way to motivate some people, then that’s one tool in our toolbox.”

United Airlines said Friday that all of its roughly 67,000-person U.S. employees must provide proof that they are vaccinated against Covid no later than Oct. 25, becoming the country’s first major airline to issue such a mandate. Employees risk termination if they don’t comply, though United said there will be exemptions for religious or medical reasons.

“We know some of you will disagree with this decision to require the vaccine for all United employees,” United Airlines’ CEO Scott Kirby and the airline’s president, Brett Hart, wrote to employees announcing the vaccine requirement. “But, we have no greater responsibility to you and your colleagues than to ensure your safety when you’re at work, and the facts are crystal clear: everyone is safer when everyone is vaccinated.”

Budget carrier Frontier Airlines followed suit hours later with its own mandate but said employees either need to show proof of inoculation by Oct. 1 or take regular Covid tests.

For better or worse, vaccines and other tools to fight the virus such as masks, have become controversial in the U.S. But health officials say the measures are necessary to save lives.

“To leave it up to the individual is to say that there are people who are going to make a choice that puts co-workers at risk,” said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease physician at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “So I think it’s a responsible, important, necessary thing to do.”

Even companies with the most expansive mandates are required by law to allow some exceptions.

Facebook’s vice president of people, Lori Goler, said the company of nearly 59,000 global employees will have a process in place for people who can’t be vaccinated for medical or other reasons and that it’s working with experts “to ensure our return to office plans prioritize everyone’s health and safety.”

The Alphabet Workers Union, which represents over 800 employees across Google and its parent company, expressed concern over the exceptions to Google’s vaccine mandate, saying the company has provided insufficient details surrounding the exemption process. A spokesperson for the union said the mandate exists “to convince white collar workers to come back to the office,” while “a boatload of people” remain unvaccinated.

Google did not respond to a request for comment. Alphabet employed over 135,000 employees worldwide as of last year.

Other companies have faced pushback from unions on their vaccine directives. After Tyson announced last week that all 120,000 of its office and plant personnel must get vaccinated, United Food and Commercial Workers, which represents 24,000 Tyson meatpacking workers, voiced reservations about mandating vaccines that lack the FDA’s full approval.

“UFCW will be meeting with Tyson in the coming weeks to discuss this vaccine mandate and to ensure that the rights of these workers are protected, and this policy is fairly implemented,” UFCW International President Marc Perrone said in a statement. Perrone added that he wanted to ensure Tyson’s union workers receive paid time off to receive and adjust to the vaccine.

United and its pilots’ union, the Air Line Pilots Association, agreed earlier this year not to implement a vaccine mandate for its nearly 13,000 aviators. United offered extra pay to pilots who received the vaccine and up to three days off for flight attendants. More than 90% of the pilots and about 80% of flight attendants are inoculated, the company said. The union said that some aviators who don’t plan to get vaccinated should talk with their pilot chief.

“The vaccine requirement represents an employment change we believe warrants further negotiations to ensure our safety, welfare, and bargaining rights are maintained, the pilots union said.

Other airlines including American, Southwest and Delta said they have not made any changes to their policies to encourage, but not mandate, vaccines for their employees. In May, Delta was the first major carrier to require the vaccine for new employees. United had followed suit. American and Delta have offered incentives like extra time off for employees who get vaccinated. Delta says more than 73% of its staff is vaccinated.

When asked how it would react to a potential companywide requirement, Dennis Tajer, a spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, which represents some 15,000 pilots at American, said: “Our position is it’s a personal choice between pilots and their medical professional. As the bargaining agent for the pilots, any change to the conditions of employment must be discussed with the representative union.” The union last week, however, urged pilots to get vaccinated and estimated in a staff note that about 60% of them are inoculated.

By mandating inoculations, corporate America is taking action in a way federal legislators cannot, said Dorit Reiss, a professor at UC Hastings College of the Law. Outside of requiring vaccines for its own employees, Reiss said the federal government “probably doesn’t have the power to say everybody in the U.S. has to get vaccinated or pay a fine.”  

But insurance agencies might, a recent op-ed by Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal and Glenn Kramon in The New York Times suggests. In the model of policies that deny coverage for injuries sustained during dangerous activities, the authors indicate that insurers could start “penalizing the unvaccinated” because their refusal to immunize poses a threat to public health. Rosenthal is editor in chief of Kaiser Health News and Kramon is a lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Companies also have the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on their side, said Thomas Lenz, a professor at the University of Southern California Gould School of Law. As long as their mandates abide by the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the commission said in May, companies could require “all employees physically entering the workplace to be vaccinated” against the coronavirus.

Despite the EEOC’s guidance, some businesses are still refraining from issuing mandates for fear of alienating their personnel, Lenz said.

“We see that employers are as concerned with what they perceive as a skill shortage, a labor shortage, as anything in deciding whether to mandate the vaccinations,” Lenz said. “And for that reason, employers don’t want to scare people away, as they feel they might be able to accommodate and keep the workforce in some other way.”

Brookdale Senior Dwelling mandates vaccine for workers

Brookdale Senior Living, a major operator of assisted living and skilled care facilities in the United States, will require its employees to be vaccinated against Covid, CEO Cindy Baier told CNBC on Friday.

The move is taking place as the highly transmissible Delta variant is causing an increase in coronavirus cases in the country, including in nursing homes. Between July 25 and August 1, coronavirus cases among nursing home residents rose 38%, although levels remain well below previous highs, according to the CDC.

Vaccines provide immune protection to vulnerable residents that was not provided in earlier stages of the pandemic, when long-term care facilities were epicentres for devastating outbreaks. At Brookdale Senior Living’s facilities, which are located in 41 states, 93% of residents are vaccinated, Baier told CNBC. The majority of Brookdale’s portfolio consists of assisted living and memory maintenance facilities.

“Given the widespread access of the vaccine, we are in a much better position to deal with the pandemic,” she said in an interview with the “Power Lunch”.

Still, the surge in coronavirus infection rates across the country puts nursing home residents at risk, many of whom are older and suffer from conditions that make Covid more dangerous to them. Rising vaccination rates among staff coming and going to the facility can play a crucial role in trying to limit the likelihood of an outbreak.

Covid vaccinations have not only been shown to be effective at reducing the risk of developing serious illness or death from the disease, but studies suggest that they can also provide protection against infection.

“We want [have] every Brookdale employee we can vaccinate. Although our efforts have been going on for several months and our vaccination rates are increasing, we would like them to be even higher, “said Baier.” That is why we have chosen a vaccine requirement with limited exemptions.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 82% of nursing home residents in the US were fully vaccinated against the coronavirus by the end of July. However, the vaccination rates for health workers are lower at around 59%. Overall, 49.9% of the US population is fully vaccinated, while 58.2% received at least one vaccination, according to the CDC.

Earlier this week, Genesis Healthcare – another major U.S. nursing home operator – announced that workers would need to get the Covid vaccine in order to stay on the job. Outside of long-term care, a number of other big companies recently rolled out stricter vaccination policies for employees, including United Airlines on Friday.

The measures are seen as a shock to the country’s vaccination rate, which had slowed significantly since the spring and prompted U.S. health officials to step up efforts to convince hesitant Americans to get the Covid vaccinations.

Several southern states with low vaccination rates have seen increases in shots administered recently as the spread of the Covid Delta variant increased, according to a CNBC analysis of CDC data. In Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Arkansas, the weekly average of the first daily doses reported has more than doubled since early July.

Nursing Properties Confront New Covid Outbreaks Amid Requires Employees Vaccination Mandates

In saying last Friday that it was monitoring outbreaks at nursing homes related to the Delta variant, the C.D.C. said some measures under review would include “testing, quarantine, visitation, use of PPE and source control.”

Underscoring the concern of regulators about unvaccinated workers, Colorado just implemented a new rule that unvaccinated staff members at nursing homes must be tested for the virus, using a rapid test, every time they come to work. California is now requiring health care workers in the state to be vaccinated or undergo frequent testing.

Feelings are raw among nursing home staff and operators.

“I don’t want to lose anyone else,” said Marita Smith, administrator at Saint Anne Nursing and Rehab Center in Seattle. Eight of 32 residents died of Covid early on in the pandemic, including four who were already on hospice. Ms. Smith says the losses help explain why all 52 staff members have been vaccinated.

“I question their reason for being in the business if they don’t get it,” Ms. Smith said. “You just don’t want to turn your back.”

Some nursing home staff members resisting vaccination argue that they can protect residents without being inoculated. “I go home, stay home as much as possible, do grocery pickup instead of shopping, do a lot of hand washing. I’m not exposing myself to other people,” said Jessica M., a director of nursing at a home in Grand Junction, Colo., who is unvaccinated.

She declined to give her last name because she wasn’t authorized to speak to the media. She added that she wanted to make sure “the side effects aren’t worse than protecting someone from Covid.”

But consumer advocates and others point to the difficulties nursing homes have long had in protecting residents from infection. A government report issued in May found that nursing homes averaged three Covid outbreaks from May 2020 through January 2021, with two-thirds reporting the outbreaks began with an infected staff member testing positive.

SkyBridge’s Anthony Scaramucci mandates Covid vaccines at his workplace

Anthony Scaramucci, founder and co-managing director of SkyBridge, told CNBC on Friday that he had commissioned Covid recordings in his hedge fund’s office.

He also urged all eligible Americans to get vaccinated.

“We are a private company. If someone wants to argue with me about the vaccine mandate, that’s fine. Let’s take it to court, ”said Scaramucci in“ Squawk Box ”and begged other companies to follow suit.

“Make a decision. You’re a private company. Let’s shut it out. We need to keep people safe. Get vaccinated. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, go. That should be the message, and that People will start getting you vaccinated. “

Scaramucci’s comments come at a critical time in the coronavirus pandemic as the US sees a spike in new infections related to the highly communicable Delta variant and health officials scramble to combat reluctance and resistance to Covid vaccines.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 49% of the US population are fully vaccinated and 56.4% have received at least one dose of vaccine. Most of the people in the country who received injections received vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna that require two doses. Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine requires a shot. However, vaccination rates have slowed significantly since mid-April, when the seven-day average of daily doses administered exceeded 3.4 million. On July 17, the weekly average of the administered daily doses was just under 450,000 according to CDC data.

Scaramucci, who briefly served as White House communications director in the Trump administration, tried to push back various conspiracy theories about the Covid vaccines. He stressed that they are safe and effective in preventing serious illness and death, and has been shown to reduce the transmission of the virus.

“I don’t have a microchip in my body. It has not genetically modified my cells. It protects me from the worst pandemic in the last 100 years and enables our economy to open up,” said Scaramucci, who also sees it as his responsibility as a father from children who are not yet eligible for the vaccine. “When you have young children … vaccinate yourself to protect your children.”

Scaramucci acknowledged that some people might be suspicious of government and large institutions, but he said the science of vaccination is clear. The more Americans get vaccinated, the better for the whole country, he said.

“I don’t like totalitarian nonsense. That’s not the point. It’s about the fact that we have to unite as a society from time to time to protect each other,” said Scaramucci. “If we all get vaccinated, we will be in society faster and the economy will grow faster and there will be more jobs and more incomes.”

Companies requiring their employees to be vaccinated have been a controversial issue throughout the pandemic, in part because the Food and Drug Administration only issued emergency clearances for the three vaccines.

Former FDA chief and Pfizer board member Dr. Scott Gottlieb told Squawk Box that he expects companies and organizations to take a more binding position on vaccination regulations once full regulatory approval is obtained.

“Hopefully when we go into the fall and winter the vaccines will get full approval … I think you will see more mandates come in. Surely, in the healthcare sector, you start to see” this is becoming commonplace, “he said .

“The business wants to start again. People want to resume activities, and to the extent that the vaccines provide an extra measure to do it safely and protect places where you bring people together, I think we will have more sports teams and more business premises see and start prescribing vaccinations. ”

Extra Hospitals Impose Vaccine Mandates for Staff

More and more hospitals and large health systems are requiring their employees to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, due to rising case numbers due to the Delta variant and persistently low vaccination rates in their communities and even within their workforce.

Many hospitals say their efforts to vaccinate their staff have stalled, just as the country’s overall vaccination rates remain below 60 percent, behind many European countries and Canada. While more than 96 percent of doctors say they are fully vaccinated, health workers, especially in rural areas, have been shown to be more resistant, according to the American Medical Association, although thousands of workers have died from the virus and countless more contracted.

A recent estimate suggests that one in four hospital workers had not been vaccinated by the end of May, with some facilities reporting that fewer than half of their staff had received the vaccination.

Some hospitals, from academic medical centers like New York-Presbyterian and Yale New Haven to big chains like Trinity Health, carry out a mandate because they realize that the only way to stop the virus is to have as many people as possible possible to vaccinate as soon as possible. A major Arizona-based chain, Banner Health, announced Tuesday that it would be issuing a mandate, and New York City said that all health care workers in city hospitals or clinics should be vaccinated or tested weekly.

The surge in cases led Trinity Health, a Catholic system with hospitals in 22 states, to become one of the first large groups to decide earlier this month to require vaccinations. “We believed the vaccine could save lives,” said Dr. Daniel Roth, Trinity’s Chief Clinical Officer. “These are preventable deaths.”

At UF Health Jacksonville, Florida, the number of Covid patients treated has increased to levels not seen since January, and only half of health care workers are vaccinated, said Chad Neilsen, director of infection prevention. 75 employees have contracted the virus, the vast majority of them unvaccinated, while others are waiting for test results. “We are currently having major problems with the staff,” he said.

“It’s like déjà vu,” said Neilsen, describing the growing frustration at colleagues’ refusal to get the recordings. “We have reason to believe that this could be over when people are vaccinated.”

Despite dozens of virtual town halls, question-and-answer sessions, and instructional videos, many employees are suspicious. “We are still stagnant,” said Mr Neilsen.

Some employees want more data, others think the process is too rushed. Much of the same conspiracy theories and misinformation – that the vaccines make women sterile or contain microchips – prevail among the staff. “Our healthcare workers are a reflection of the general population,” he said.

Hospital directors and others plan to meet with state officials in the coming weeks about the option to mandate, he said.

Unvaccinated workers continue to care for even the sickest patients, raising concerns that they are spreading the infection, especially now that the highly contagious Delta variant accounts for more than 80 percent of cases in the country.

“Nowhere is this more important than in hospitals where health workers – who were heroic during this pandemic – care for patients with a variety of health problems on the assumption that the healthcare professionals treating them are not at risk or transmission of Covid-19,” said Dr. David J. Skorton, chairman of the board of the Association of American Medical Colleges, which represents teaching hospitals, in a statement last Friday calling for a mandate.

On Wednesday, two more groups, including the American Hospital Association, joined the growing call for vaccine mandates. “We lost too many of our caregivers to Covid-19,” said Dr. Bruce Siegel, the executive director of America’s Essential Hospitals, which represents hospitals in underserved communities. “Vaccination can reduce the risk of losing more.”

With the formal approval of the vaccines by the Food and Drug Administration may still be months away, hospitals are at the center of the national mandate debate. While the vaccines are offered under an emergency license, proponents argue that there is ample evidence that the vaccines available in the United States are both safe and effective.

There is a new urgency in states like Missouri, which have reported a surge in cases. “We felt we couldn’t wait,” said Dr. Shephali Wulff, the director of infectious diseases at SSM Health, a Catholic hospital system headquartered in St. Louis. SSM, which now has about two-thirds of its employees vaccinated, requires everyone to get their first dose by September 1st.

SSM’s decision was also motivated by concerns that Covid infections could rise this fall when other respiratory infections could also rise. “We need healthy workers for the flu season,” said Dr. Wulff. “We don’t have time to wait for approval.”

However, some systems already fear staff shortages due to departures during the pandemic, as many employees quit because of stress and burnout in the care of Covid patients. Hospitals are reluctant to lose more staff when forcing the problem.

“They fear this could be a turning point,” said Ann Marie Pettis, president of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, one of the professional organizations calling on hospitals to request the vaccine.

At Mosaic Life Care, a small hospital group in Missouri, executives are reluctant to take on mandates when other hospitals fail. “We have the potential to lose some caregivers to other systems,” said Joey Austin, a spokeswoman for Mosaic, which has vaccinated about 62 percent of its employees.

Many hospitals already require their staff to have a flu shot, which has been around for over a decade. Although this met with resistance from employees who were skeptical about the safety of the vaccines, it is now widely accepted. Individuals can apply for a medical or religious exemption, which is typically a small portion of the workforce that hospitals say would also apply to the Covid vaccines.

Mandates “impose a social norm and say it is an institutional priority,” said Saad B. Omer, director of the Yale Institute for Global Health, who stressed that hospitals must strongly encourage their workers to receive the vaccines voluntarily, in order to be successful.

Unions like National Nurses United and 1199 SEIU say they want their members to be vaccinated but refuse to make it a condition of employment. At the first mandated hospital, the Houston Methodist, a group of staff sued to challenge the request, but the lawsuit was recently dismissed. Of a total workforce of around 26,000 people, around 150 left or were made redundant because they could not meet the vaccination deadline.

Hospitals say they are working hard to dispel much of the widespread misinformation surrounding the vaccines, even among doctors and nurses.

“I have to remind them that serious scientists do not post their results on YouTube,” said Dr. Wulff. “We know that we can continue to protect our patients and caregivers by ensuring these safety precautions are in place,” said K. Kelly Hancock, chief caregiver officer, Cleveland Clinic.

About three-quarters of the staff are now vaccinated and efforts are continuing “at full speed,” she said.

At Intermountain Healthcare, based in Utah, “a good majority” of employees have been vaccinated, said Dr. Kristin Dascomb, medical director for infection prevention and control and employee health.

If more safety data is required and the FDA approves the vaccines, Intermountain, along with other hospitals in the state, can request a vaccination. “We’re starting the conversation in Utah now,” she said.

The lack of full FDA approval has affected other hospitals as well. Mass General Brigham, who vaccinated more than 85 percent of his workforce, said he would adopt the requirement once the vaccines are approved.

Some hospitals argue that a mandate is not required. “I don’t think there is one right answer,” said Suresh Gunasekaran, general manager of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. About 90 percent of workers are now vaccinated, he said, adding he was confident that virtually everyone will be vaccinated by the end of the year.

The system was “successful in eliminating vaccine hesitation,” Gunasekaran said, in part because Iowa was involved in clinical trials for the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine.

Northwell Health, the large New York hospital group, doesn’t require workers to be vaccinated against the flu, but about 90 percent of their workforce is vaccinated, said Maxine Carrington, Northwell’s chief human resources officer. The same applies to Covid.

“We want people to be believers,” said Ms. Carrington, so that they can better convince the entire ward to get vaccinated. With the highly transmittable Delta-Covid variant continuing to spread rapidly in the United States and elsewhere around the world, scientists and other health experts are warning that indoor mask regulations and other public health measures in the US are likely to return this fall.

The country, which just celebrated July 4th with some of its first major gatherings in more than a year, is heading for a “dangerous” fall season, with Delta expected to cause another surge in new coronavirus cases, health experts say. Delta is already the predominant variant in the US and will hit the states with the lowest vaccination rates the hardest – unless those states and companies reintroduce mask rules, capacity limits, and other public health measures, which they largely withdrew in recent months have, say experts.

With new mutations discovered every few weeks, many scientists are now predicting that Covid will circulate around the world for at least the next two to three years, obliging nations to adopt ad hoc public health measures for the foreseeable future. Authorities in Australia, South Africa and Asia recently reinstated curfews or other measures to contain rising delta outbreaks. “I could foresee that in certain parts of the country mask requirements, distance and occupancy restrictions for indoor areas would be reintroduced in the coming months,” said Lawrence Gostin, director of the World Health Organization’s Cooperation Center for National and Global Health Law.

He fears there will be “major outbreaks” in the US this fall, especially in states with low vaccination rates.

“We are heading for a very dangerous fall, with large parts of the country still unvaccinated, a swelling Delta variant and people taking off their masks,” added Gostin.

The warning from scientists and other health professionals comes as many U.S. companies and offices have largely phased out mask requirements, social distancing, and other pandemic-related restrictions.

Almost immediately after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared in mid-May that fully vaccinated people would not need to wear masks in most indoor spaces, Walmart and Costco followed suit, allowing fully vaccinated customers and employees without state or local laws. Other companies like Apple and Amazon are urging most of their employees to return to the office in some capacity this fall as more Americans get vaccinated against the virus. Goldman Sachs employees returned to the office last month, while Citigroup and JPMorgan expect their employees to return on a rotation basis this month.

Confirmed Covid infections in the US have dropped to their lowest level since the pandemic began, averaging about 15,000 new cases per day for the past seven days from a high of about 251,000 average new cases per day in January, according to Johns Hopkins University. Hospital stays and deaths have also declined, with Covid deaths averaging around 225 per day – up from a high of an average of more than 3,400 deaths per day in January.

Should daily Covid cases pick up again in the fall, as expected by health professionals, some employers in states with low Covid vaccination rates may face the difficult decision to make public health measures such as wearing masks and social distancing capacities to reintroduce limits or send office workers home entirely.

For example, in Mississippi, where less than a third of the state’s eligible population is fully vaccinated, officials last week recommended that all residents continue to wear masks indoors as Delta becomes the predominant variety in the state. Officials in Los Angeles County, California last week also recommended that “everyone, regardless of vaccination status,” wear masks as a precaution in public places indoors.

Offit, who advises the FDA on Covid vaccines, said he expected several more states to reintroduce indoor mask requirements this fall.

The United States is still “undervaccinated” and states with low vaccination rates are likely to be hit the worst, Offit said. Less than half of the United States, about 158 ​​million people, have been fully vaccinated, with more than a dozen states having fully immunized less than 40% of their population, according to CDC data. In Texas, the second most populous state after California, only 42% of residents are fully vaccinated, the data shows.

Even people who are fully protected have cause for concern when it comes to variants of Covid, Offit said. Nations weigh mandates and incentives to drive up vaccination charges.
