Kamala Harris fundraiser Jon Henes to launch company advisory agency

Vice President Kamala Harris’ former national campaign finance chair is opening a strategic advisory firm that will aim, in part, to guide corporations and C-suite executives through handling social justice and politically charged issues.

Jon Henes, a longtime corporate restructuring attorney at the prominent law firm Kirkland & Ellis, plans to launch his new New York-based firm around Labor Day, according to people briefed on the matter.

The firm is planning to hire at least 15 people at first, and it could expand operations to Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and San Francisco, a person said.

The advisory firm will have a multipronged approach, including a corporate strategic advisory arm that would do the traditional counseling on hiring practices such as union inclusion. It will also have a team that will focus on environmental, social and corporate governance, and workplace diversity, equity and inclusion, these people said.

The people cited in this story declined to be named because details for the new venture have yet to be finalized.

A Kirkland & Ellis press release announcing Henes’ departure noted he was on his way to starting a strategic advisory firm but provided no further details.

“Over the past few years, in addition to my work at Kirkland, I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of politics and policy, opening my eyes to the critical business need for helping CEOs navigate the convergence of business, finance and law with social justice, diversity, inclusion and politics,” Henes said in the release. “It is bittersweet to leave my Kirkland colleagues, many of whom I think of as family, but I’m excited to embark on this new chapter of my career.”

He did not return CNBC’s follow-up requests for comment.

The firm’s launch comes as corporations experience pushback from consumers and employees over their stances on social justice and environmental issues.

After voting laws that have been deemed restrictive by critics were passed in Georgia, corporations felt pressured to respond. Several did, including Major League Baseball, which moved its All-Star Game from Georgia to Colorado.

In a recent example of the pressure, Toyota halted giving campaign contributions to Republican lawmakers who challenged the results of the election.

The competition for advisory firms like these is fierce, but many, especially those run by people with high-level contacts, are often successful.

Teneo, which was co-founded by Bill Clinton’s former right-hand man, Doug Band, has been known as an influential advisory group that has links to massive corporations.

The same can be said for WestExec Advisors, which has seen over 15 consultants head into the Biden administration, according to reporting by The Intercept and The American Prospect. Antony Blinken co-founded WestExec and is now secretary of State.

One of the other expected leaders of Henes’ firm is Alvin Tillery, according to the sources. Tillery is an associate professor at Northwestern University and director of the school’s Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy.

Tillery has experience running an advisory firm of his own. He is the founder of Analytic Insights Consulting, which, according to the firm’s website, “advises corporate, nonprofit, and governmental entities seeking to build more diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environments.” The firm’s listed previous clients include MGM International Resorts, Baker Demonstration School, the City of Evanston, and Exelixis.

If Tillery and Henes reach an official agreement, Tillery would continue his work at the school and will have a leadership role at the newly created advisory business, a person said. Analytic Insights Consulting is potentially folded into the new firm founded by Henes, this person noted.

Tillery did not respond to a request for comment.

Henes was Harris’ national finance chair while she was running for president during the 2020 election, helping her raise at least $400,000 before he started raising money for Joe Biden, CNBC previously reported.

Henes also led fundraising efforts both for Democrat Jaime Harrison’s bid for South Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat last year and former Citigroup executive Ray McGuire’s campaign for New York mayor in the Democratic primary this year.

While the Harris, Harrison and McGuire runs were unsuccessful, his fundraising efforts were key for Henes in developing contacts and potential partners and clients for his new firms. Harris went on to be vice president, and Harrison is the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Henes also developed strong corporate ties when he worked for clients as a restructuring and corporate governance advisor. Kirkland’s website shows that his past clients include Ion Media, Avaya and J.Jill.

Virgin Galactic to launch Richard Branson on July 11, aiming to beat Jeff Bezos to house

Virgin Galactic announced Thursday that the space tourism company will attempt to launch its next test space flight with founder Sir Richard Branson on July 11th.

Branson wants to knock his billionaire Jeff Bezos into space, because he wants to start his own company Blue Origin on July 20th.

“After more than 16 years of research, development and testing, Virgin Galactic is at the forefront of a new commercial space industry that will open space to mankind and change the world forever,” Branson said in a statement. “I am honored to confirm the journey of our future astronauts and make sure we deliver the unique customer experience that people have come to expect from Virgin.”

This will be Virgin Galactic’s fourth test space flight to date and its first mission with a crew of four on board as the company launched its final space flight on May 22 with just two pilots.

Virgin Galactic’s shares rose 20% during after-hours trading, from $ 43.19 on Thursday’s closing.

In addition to Branson, three Virgin Galactic mission specialists will be present: Chief Astronaut Instructor Beth Moses, Senior Operations Engineer Colin Bennett, and VP of Government Affairs Sirisha Bandla. Virgin Galactic pilots Dave Mackay and Michael Masucci will fly the company’s VSS Unity spacecraft.

Virgin Galactic says it will live stream the space flight for the first time, a feed that will be available on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook.

On June 25, the company announced that the Federal Aviation Administration had granted a license to fly passengers on future space flights and Virgin plans to begin flying paying passengers in early 2022.

Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004 to build a space tourism company. The company’s spacecraft takes off from a carrier aircraft before accelerating to more than three times the speed of sound.

The Virgin Galactic spacecraft then spends a few minutes in weightlessness over 50 miles (80 kilometers) – the limit the US officially recognizes as space – before slowly turning around and sliding back to Earth to land on a runway.

Virgin Galactic only competes with Bezos’ Blue Origin in suborbital space tourism, as Elon Musk’s SpaceX puts passengers into orbit on longer journeys, such as to the International Space Station.

In June, Bezos announced that it would be flying Blue Origin’s first passenger flight on the New Shepard rocket. Bezos is slated to hit the market on July 20 and will fly with his brother Mark, winner of a $ 28 million public auction, and legendary aerospace pioneer Wally Funk.

Singapore, Hong Kong push again launch date for air journey bubble

SINGAPORE – Singapore and Hong Kong have again postponed the start date of a long-awaited deal on air bubbles, the two cities announced on Monday.

Vanessa Bryant, Kobe’s widow, to launch Mambacita clothes line

Oxford to launch human problem trial to review immune response

LONDON – Oxford University researchers announced the start of a Human Challenge study on Monday to better understand what happens when people who have already contracted the coronavirus become infected for the second time.

The researchers will investigate what kind of immune response can prevent people from becoming infected with Covid-19 again and examine how the immune system reacts to the virus a second time.

Little is currently known about what happens to people who had the virus the second time they were infected.

The experiment is carried out in two phases with different participants in each phase. The first phase is slated to begin this month and the second phase is slated to begin in summer.

In medical research, Human Challenge studies are controlled studies in which participants are intentionally exposed to a pathogen or beetle to study the effects.

“Challenge studies tell us things that other studies cannot because, unlike natural infections, they are tightly controlled,” said Helen McShane, chief investigator for the study and professor of vaccinology in the Department of Pediatrics at Oxford University.

“If we re-infect these participants, we will know exactly how their immune systems responded to the first COVID infection, when exactly the second infection occurs, and how much virus they have,” said McShane.

It is hoped that the study will help improve scientists’ basic understanding of the virus and develop tests that can reliably predict whether people will be protected.

What happens in each phase?

In the first phase, up to 64 volunteers between the ages of 18 and 30 who were previously infected naturally will be re-exposed to the virus under controlled conditions.

Researchers will oversee attendees’ care while they perform CT scans of the lungs and MRI scans of the heart while isolating in a specially designed suite for at least 17 days.

All participants must be fit, healthy and have fully recovered from their initial infection with Covid to minimize the risk.

Study participants will only be released from the quarantine unit if they are no longer infected and there is a risk of the disease spreading.

In the second phase of the experiment, two different areas are examined.

“First we will very carefully define the basic immune response of the volunteers before we infect them. Amplify to launch clear residing ETF, DTOX, monitoring surroundings and well being

The enthusiasm for clean living doesn’t stop with Corporate America.

The C.D.C. and N.I.H. launch a fast, at-home testing initiative in Tennessee and North Carolina.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health announced a new initiative on Wednesday to see if the frequent and widespread use of rapid coronavirus tests is slowing the spread of the virus.

The program will provide free antigen testing at home to everyone in two communities, Pitt County, NC, and Hamilton County, Tennessee, for free, bringing a total of 160,000 people to test for the coronavirus three times a week for a while a month.

Former Cuomo aide Lindsey Boylan plans to launch PAC in opposition to Schumer, Gillibrand

Update: Later on Friday after this story was published, Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand issued a statement calling on New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to resign. A former aide to Governor Andrew Cuomo plans to set up a political action committee against Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand after failing to call on New York Governor to resign.

Both New York Senators Supported the New York District Attorney’s general investigation into Cuomo’s alleged conduct, but not requested to resign.

Cuomo has denied all allegations of harassment and stated on Friday that he will not resign.

Insurers launch program to get 2 million American seniors vaccinated

More than a dozen health insurers are starting a pilot program to vaccinate 2 million American seniors as quickly as possible, President Joe Biden’s senior advisor for the Covid-19 pandemic announced on Wednesday.

The pilot program – Vaccine Community Connecters – is designed to educate seniors about the vaccines, schedule admissions, and arrange transportation, advisor Andy Slavitt told reporters.

Insurers will also talk about “efficacy, safety and the value of vaccinating vaccines,” said Slavitt, who served in the Obama administration. He added that insurers could deploy mobile vans in the communities most in need. The announcement comes as the Biden government works to increase supplies of Covid-19 vaccines and reach the majority of Americans as soon as possible. Around 51.8 million out of around 331 million Americans have received at least their first dose of a Covid vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And 26.2 million of those people have already had their second shot, which is roughly 10% of the total US adult population, according to the CDC.

The risk of developing serious illness with Covid increases with age, with older adults at the highest risk, according to the CDC.

Insurers will work with federal, state and local officials to deliver vaccines to underserved communities and will work closely with other vaccination partners, including pharmacies.

The trade group said some communities are best served by mobile clinics, voice assistance, or a combination of interventions. Others will benefit from health insurers that work directly with ridesharing to provide transportation, the group said.

This isn’t the first senior-tailored vaccination program the federal government has touted. In October, the Department of Health and Human Services announced a contract with CVS Health and Walgreens to deliver coronavirus vaccines to the elderly and workers in long-term care facilities.
