Child Born on Afghan Flight Is Named Attain, After Jet’s Name Signal

The Afghan parents of a baby born on a C-17 plane that was evacuating passengers to Germany named their daughter after the plane’s call sign, a senior US general said this week.

“They named the little girl Reach, and they did so because the callsign of the C-17 plane that flew them from Qatar to Ramstein was Reach,” said General Tod Wolters, commander of US European Command, in a Pentagon -Message conference on Wednesday.

The Afghan mother, who is not named, had contractions and complications on Saturday on a flight from a base in Qatar to the Ramstein air base in southwest Germany, the US Air Force said on Twitter.

In response, the C-17 – identified on the radio as Reach 828 – sank in altitude to increase air pressure on the plane, “which helped stabilize and save the mother’s life,” the Air Force said.

After the plane landed, paramedics got on board and helped drop the baby into the hold. A group of women protected their mother’s privacy with their scarves, said Capt. Erin Brymer, a nurse who helped deliver the child, told CNN.

By the time they got there, the woman was “past the point of no return,” she said. “This baby was supposed to be born before we could possibly move it to another facility.”

Pictures released by the US Air Force showed the woman being transported from the plane to a nearby medical facility shortly after the birth of her daughter.

General Wolters said the baby was one of three – all in good condition – born to women who boarded evacuation flights from Afghanistan. Two more were delivered at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a military hospital in southern Germany.

“It is my dream to see this little kid named Reach grow up and become a US citizen and fly United States Air Force fighter jets in our air force,” General Wolters told reporters.

Aerion Supersonic shuts down, ending plans for silent enterprise jets

Aerion Supersonic, the Nevada-based company that wanted to build business jets that can silently fly almost twice as fast as commercial aircraft, is being shut down, CNBC confirmed on Friday.

“In the current financial environment, it has proven extremely difficult to meet the planned and necessary large new capital requirements,” the company said in a statement to begin production of its AS2 supersonic jet.

“Aerion Corporation is now taking the appropriate steps to accommodate this ongoing financial environment,” the company said.

Florida Today first reported on the company’s abrupt shutdown.

Aerion wanted to fly its first AS2 jet by 2024, with the goal of entering commercial service by 2026. The company developed a patented technology called “Boomless Cruise” that would allow AS2 to fly without generating a sonic boom – a problem that plagued supersonic Concorde jets of the past.

The AS2 was priced at $ 120 million per jet. Aerion CEO Tom Vice said at a UBS conference in January 2020 that he expected AS2 development to cost the company approximately $ 4 billion, with $ 1 billion to develop an engine at this point had been issued.

The company had entered into several partnerships along the way – including with NetJets from Boeing, General Electric and Berkshire Hathaway – and achieved sales of $ 11.2 billion for its AS2 jets. Earlier this year, Aerion announced in a press conference with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that a $ 375 million manufacturing facility would be built at Orlando Melbourne International Airport.

An Aerion spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment on what will happen to Aerion’s assets.

United Airways buys 25 extra Boeing 737 Max jets in vote of confidence

United Airlines is buying 25 additional Boeing 737 Max planes and taking other orders ahead of schedule in preparation for a rebound in travel demand, the airline said on Monday.

“As we plan for the future and the return of demand, we have looked for ways to best position our fleet for recreation and to be able to best capitalize on people’s desire to travel,” said Andrew Nocella. Chief Commercial by United Officer said in a note to staff.

In addition to the 25 Boeing 737 Max planes slated for delivery in 2023, the Chicago-based airline has increased deliveries of 40 more Max jets by 2022 and five more by 2023. In total, United has firm commitments for 188 maxes, according to a securities filing on Monday.

The vote of confidence in the jetliner comes just months after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its aircraft ban after two fatal crashes. United, which had 14 Boeing Max 9 jets in its fleet at the time of landing in March 2019, received the planes again in December from Boeing, the first airline to do so. Commercial flights were launched with these jets last month.

United lost more than $ 7 billion last year as it, like other airlines, struggled with the Covid-19 pandemic. The demand for travel is likely to remain weak in the first half of the year. United said in the filing that it expects its capacity to decrease by at least 51% in the first quarter from the same quarter of 2019.
