Why Is Hiring Onerous Proper Now?

Sensible theories tell us that unemployment insurance levels could reduce workers’ job search intensity, but well-done studies found that wasn’t really the case in 2020. Demand may be rising faster than supply but things are changing fast, systematic data is slow, and so anyone who tells you they know exactly what’s happening in America broadly now is wrong.

What else is going on here?

Assuming employed, essential workers were more likely to get vaccinated earlier, the non-vaccinated rate is substantially higher for working-age Americans who are not working. My analysis of census data shows that, in January through March, for every 10 percent of working-age people vaccinated, about 1 percent more became employed. Our working-age employment rate remains about three percentage points down from February 2020. If this relationship continued to hold as we vaccinate the next 30 percent of working-age Americans, the remaining employment gap could close. It’s not that simple, but I do think that it suggests that public health remains the first-order issue.

For employers with some flexibility in setting wages, they may not raise wage offers to new hires because internal equity then pressures for raises to incumbents and that reduces their profit. These employers will feel like they want to hire, but not so much that they will raise wage offers enough to attract candidates. They will cry about labor shortages but not compete hard.

What can companies do to attract workers?

First, make the job better. Improve wages, benefits, training, safety and respect. Ensure every supervisor treats employees with respect. Are any consistently experiencing higher turnover in their unit?

Second, promote public health by taking coronavirus precautions. This will help everyone and reassure workers who’ve stayed out of the labor market due to health concerns.

Third, be more transparent about what the job offers. Many managers post vague job openings in order to preserve their bargaining flexibility, so they can make a tailored offer after learning about a specific candidate’s circumstances. However, vague vacancy descriptions can lead to two kinds of expensive errors. First, some people who would be a good fit don’t apply because they can’t recognize that the job would be a good fit. Second, people who would not be a good fit apply because the ad is not clear and then the manager has to waste time interfacing with them.

Southwest plans to start out hiring flight attendants once more as journey rebounds

Airlines spent much of the last year worrying about having too many people busy after the demand for travel dropped. Now they are trying to avoid the opposite problem when customers return and the effects of the Covid pandemic wear off.

Southwest Airlines is the newest airline to address this issue and plans to recruit flight attendants in the coming weeks, according to CNBC. A spokesman from the southwest said it was too early to determine how many flight attendants would be needed.

Competitors like American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines recently announced that they intend to resume pilot hiring this year in hopes that they can meet increasing travel demand in the years ahead as hundreds of Pilots hired near the federal retirement age are 65 years.

Dallas-based Southwest recently announced that it will be calling back flight attendants who have been on temporary vacation next month at the company’s urging.

“In order to meet future operational requirements, all flight attendants were called back to work from June 1st and we will have to hire flight attendants in the near future,” the staff said in a statement.

Southwest has started reaching out to candidates who had conditional vacancies when the pandemic froze hiring last year.

“We are pleased to announce that the majority of these candidates are still interested in joining our in-flight family and this is helping us rebuild a pool of candidates,” the memo reads.

The airline is also hiring some ramp agents and other ground workers.

Delta to renew pilot hiring in June as journey demand returns

Delta Air Lines announced on Wednesday that it will resume hiring new pilots after other airlines prepare for future staff as the demand for travel picks up again.

The Atlanta-based airline will initially add 75 pilots with conditional vacancies “and likely to increase the number of new pilots by September,” wrote John Laughter, Delta senior vice president and chief of operations, in a staff memo, that was seen by CNBC.

United Airlines, American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and JetBlue Airways have either resumed hiring pilots or are planning for this year.

Airlines expanded jobs to hundreds of pilots over the past year, but the Covid-19 pandemic has halted their training. The airlines then offered the pilots and other staff an early retirement and temporary paid vacation to reduce the number of staff as the demand for travel fell.

Now airlines are looking to add new pilots as hundreds of their current pilots near the federal retirement age of 65.

Royal Caribbean halts hiring in India as Covid circumstances surge there

Royal Caribbean Cruises is temporarily suspending all operations for its employees from India and, according to a report from the Crew Center, will suspend the employment in the country as more and more cases of Covid-19 are occurring there.

India reported a record number of coronavirus cases on Monday for the fifth consecutive year, with over 350,000 new infections over a 24-hour period and a total of 17 million infections in the country.

“It is always unfortunate when we have to cancel orders, but we believe that this is a prudent decision at this point in time,” quoted the Royal Caribbean International news agency, quoting a letter to the crew it had received. “It’s not the way we want to work, but it’s the reality of the quick changes we have to make for a variety of reasons, often unplanned and beyond our direct control.”

According to the crew center report, around 300 Indian crew members should be working on the company’s ship Anthem of the Seas as of May 3. A person familiar with the matter told the news agency that the crew would be provided accommodations under quarantine guidelines. Some of the workers have already been to St. Maarten, the report said.

TikTok, Bumble, others are hiring school college students as model ambassadors

Companies like TikTok and Bumble are hiring students to work as brand ambassadors on campus. These jobs pay off better than typical college jobs like food service and retail – and provide valuable work experience.

Students say they learned about marketing, content creation, and management while working as brand ambassadors – and expanded their network by connecting with other campus representatives across the country. And in a highly competitive internship and job market, the experience of being a brand ambassador is a way to stand out, the students said.

“My life changed with the TikTok Ambassador Program,” said Bita Motiie, a senior at the University of North Texas who studied marketing.

Motiie has been working as a campus rep for the social media platform since fall 2019 and said this has helped her recognize her interest in branding and building online communities – and advance her career.

“I had so many new job opportunities,” said Motiie. “Even at the place where I currently work, they hired me specifically because I had experience as a TikTok brand ambassador.”

Campus ambassador programs also benefit brands. A study by Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and research firm Keller Fay Group found that 82% of consumers are likely to follow a recommendation from a micro-influencer (a person with greater reach) than the average person – although not a celebrity – in a very specific category or demographic such as college students).

“These programs are a win-win as they provide brands with valuable insight while students gain marketing experience as they near graduation,” said Julie Jatlow, partner at Fuse, an agency that runs college ambassador programs for TikTok , Amazon and other brands.

Depending on the company, campus ambassador duties typically include posting content on social media, handing out goods or samples, hosting branded events, and reaching out to student organizations.

“Finding creative and passionate students whose traits are specifically tailored to the brand’s DNA is of the utmost importance,” said Jatlow. “We are always on the lookout for proactive students with drive and enthusiasm.”

Student representatives are usually compensated by an hourly rate or a monthly grant and can work on their own schedule. In fact, campus ambassador wages are between $ 15 and $ 25 an hour, according to job postings on the employment website. This is well above the hourly rate for jobs common among college students, like food and beverage service, which pays around $ 11 an hour, and retail sales, which are around $ 13 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Hour pays.

Francis, who is now an associate product marketing manager at Google, said her experience with campus ambassador programs helped her develop skills like time management and stakeholder engagement.

In particular, her experience with TikTok gave her a crash course on viral marketing, expertise that she uses in her current job.

“It’s a good primer,” said Francis. “There are certain things that other people have to teach how to do that. I don’t have to learn how to do it.”

Peter Corrigan, assistant director of employer and alumni connections for Student Engagement and Career Development at the University of Arizona, said working as brand ambassadors on campus helps students build key skills.

“Students improve their communication skills when they speak to a large number of people who are trying to create brand awareness on campus,” Corrigan said. “It takes students out of their comfort zone and gives them sales experience with companies they might want to work for.”

Like Francis, Nguyen said her work as a campus ambassador resulted in work experience. She recently completed a certification in project management and is a full-time intern in a project management role.

“I realized that a lot of my job was project management, like running events and being able to oversee and coordinate with teams,” said Nguyen of her experience as a brand ambassador.

Montserrat Lewin Mejia, a senior at Michigan State University, began campus ambassador programs in her second semester of her junior year as a representative of retail brand Rent the Runway before the Covid-19 pandemic closed the program. She is now a brand ambassador for Bumble and the fashion start-up Qatch.

As an engineering student, Mejia said that the campus brand ambassador programs introduced her to the world of influencer marketing and helped her achieve new career goals.

“I’ve had a really big goal since I started, potentially becoming a full-time influencer,” Mejia said.

Area companies should take these steps to broaden hiring, says this CEO

The growth of space companies makes this the “most exciting time” to get into the industry. However, one CEO says private and government organizations need to do more to attract the next generation of U.S. workers.

United Airways tells employees it is hiring a whole bunch of pilots for journey restoration

United Airlines announced Thursday that hundreds of pilots will soon be hired – a process the airline had to stop when the coronavirus pandemic destroyed demand for travel last year. This comes from an internal email that has been checked by CNBC.

The Chicago-based airline is the first of the major US carriers to announce that it will resume hiring pilots. This is the latest sign that she is preparing for a recovery. The airline will begin hiring approximately 300 pilots who had contingent vacancies or training scheduled last year before the airline abandoned the hiring.

Over the past year, airlines, including United, have urged thousands of workers to take advantage of buyouts, early retirement packages, and leave of absence in an effort to cut costs during the pandemic. United and its pilots union – the Air Line Pilots Association – reached an agreement last year to avoid vacation with their pilots, including reduced hours for some junior pilots, even though they face lower guarantees due to government aid.
