Ford Motor and Nissan Motor on Friday confirmed they were reducing vehicle production at plants in the US and Japan due to a semiconductor shortage, indicating growing concerns in the global auto industry in 2021.

Ford will shut down an SUV plant in Kentucky next week while Nissan is cutting production at a plant in Japan. Both companies said they are working closely with suppliers to resolve the situation and monitor for additional impacts.

Automakers and suppliers warned of a semiconductor shortage late last year after vehicle demand rose faster than expected after a two-month shutdown of production facilities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Semiconductors are extremely important components of new vehicles for everything from infotainment systems to other more traditional parts like power steering. They are also easily used in consumer electronics.

German automaker Volkswagen announced last month it had adjusted production at plants in China, North America and Europe due to a lack of semiconductor shipments, according to Reuters. America’s largest automaker, General Motors, has not had to cut production, but the company is closely monitoring the situation, spokesman David Barnas said.

“We are aware of increased demand for semiconductor microchips as the auto industry continues to recover around the world,” he said in a statement sent via email. “Our supply chain organization works closely with our supply base to find solutions to our suppliers’ semiconductor needs and to reduce the impact on GM production.”

Ford’s affected plant, the Louisville Assembly Plant, builds the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs and employs around 3,900 hourly workers. According to Ford spokeswoman Kelli Felker, due to the shortage, it will be postponed to another planned one-week shutdown later in the year due to the shortage.

“We are working closely with suppliers to address potential production restrictions related to the global semiconductor shortage,” she said in a statement sent via email.

The affected Nissan plant, the Japanese Oppama plant, is building the Note, a small car that is not sold in the United States. Lloryn Love-Carter, a Nissan spokeswoman in the US, said the company’s domestic production was not affected by the semiconductor shortage.

“We are working closely with our supplier partners to monitor the situation and assess the potential impact on our operations in North America,” she said in a statement sent via email.

In a new ad campaign starring actor Bryan Cranston, Ford Motor urges Americans to adhere to Covid-19 protocols to save lives in the next phase of the pandemic.

The campaign, part of an initiative the company named #FinishStrong, features a new commercial from filmmaker Peter Berg voiced by the star “Breaking Bad” and “Your Honor”. The spots will be released in early January during college football bowl games on ABC and ESPN and NFL games on Fox.

Ford leaders said on a call Wednesday that the company wanted to step up Covid protocols in the final leg of the pandemic to prevent tens of thousands of additional deaths from vaccine adoption.

“We’re entering a really critical time,” said Mark Truby, Ford’s chief communications officer. “Vaccines are just around the corner, but we know from health professionals and so on that until there is a mass launch of vaccines and so on, up to 50,000 more American lives could be saved, and what kinds of numbers will really make a difference. ”

The ad, which contains scenes of frontline workers and those affected by Covid, is intended to set a uniform tone.

“We know Americans don’t necessarily want to be preached, and they don’t want to hear fear tactics,” Truby said. “The idea behind it was how we can develop a positive message that appeals to the sense of humanity, patriotism and the feeling of doing what’s right for each other.”

The company worked on site with the advertising agency Wieden + Kennedy and the Civic Entertainment Group. Ford is dedicating a number of slots during the games in early January that were originally intended to be used to promote its F-150 truck.

Ford has worked with the UAW to manufacture tens of millions of personal protective equipment, including 20 million face shields, 50,000 ventilators, 32,000 respirators and 1.4 million robes, amid the pandemic.

Ford Motor is expanding its highly profitable truck range with a new “Tremor” off-road model for the F-150 pickup.

The 2021 F-150 Tremor announced on Tuesday offers several new features in a revised version of the pickup, which is arriving at dealerships across the country, and improvements to the off-road equipment. According to Ford, the tremor model will go on sale next summer.

The new edition of the F-150 is Ford’s latest attempt to grow its loyal truck customers and increase profits by taking advantage of increasingly popular off-road models. It complements the current Tremor models that are offered for its larger Super Duty pickups as well as for the Ranger mid-range pickups.

Ford’s F-Series trucks are a cash cow for the company, according to a study commissioned by Ford from the Boston Consulting Group. They generate much of the automaker’s bottom line and have annual sales of around $ 42 billion. Ford’s automotive sales were $ 143.6 billion in 2019.

The F-150 Tremor has special badge and design elements, as well as additional off-road capabilities, including improved suspension and shock absorbers and a “bash plate” to protect the vehicle’s chassis. It also adds 33-inch off-road tires mounted on matte 18-inch wheels, 1-inch width and all-wheel drive as standard. The vehicle is powered by Ford’s 3.5 liter V6 engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.

Ford hasn’t released pricing for the F-150 Tremor, but it could be somewhere between a similarly-featured model with its current off-road package of around $ 45,000 and Ford’s 2020 F-150 Raptor Performance Truck which sells at $ 53,455 Dollar starts.
