Die Eigentümer von Global Equity, deren Registrierung besagt, dass das Unternehmen 2016 seinen Betrieb aufgenommen hat, sind als zwei Männer aufgeführt, Michael Tyldesley und Ibrahima Thiam.

American Airlines also dispatched Jack McCain, son of former Senator John McCain, to the Republican lobby in Austin to help lift some of the more stringent restrictions.

Republicans in state legislature appear to be unbowed. In amendments tabled to the state budget this week, House Republicans suggested that “a company that publicly threatened negative reactions related to” electoral integrity “would be ineligible for some state funding.

While these changes did not end up in the final budget, a broader proposal was added to the state’s “wish list,” a compilation of Longshot proposals, threatening companies who comment on “legislative or executive action”. Even if the likelihood of existence is unlikely, the mere inclusion of the proposals on files is viewed by Austin lobbyists and activists as a thinly veiled warning to corporations to keep quiet on voting bills.

The Perryman Group, an economic research and analysis firm based in Waco, said in a recent study that implementing controversial voting measures could result in conferences or events being taken out of the state and causing companies or workers to avoid them. The group estimated that restrictive new laws would cause a huge decline in business activity in the state by 2025 and cost tens of thousands of jobs.

Restrictions in two bulk acts in Texas law include a ban on 24-hour voting, a ban on drive-through voting, and harsh criminal penalties for local election officials who provide support to voters. There are also new limits on the distribution of voting machines, which could lead to a reduction in the number of districts and a ban on the promotion of postal voting.

The bills also include a measure that would make it much more difficult to remove an election observer for inappropriate behavior. Harris County election officials said they had received several complaints about Republican election observers over the past year.

Mr. Hollins, a former Harris County employee, said Republicans have recognized that “blacks and browns and the poor and youth” are more likely than others to use flexible choices. “You’re scared of it,” he said.

But many voters in Harris County, with its 4.7 million population ranks third in the country and larger than 25 states, see a different motive.

At least on this second point, they can now breathe easier: Both the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna vaccines will be effective in preventing serious illness and death of the variant, according to two independent studies.

Antibodies stimulated by these vaccines are only slightly less effective in controlling the variant than the original form of the virus, both studies found.

“We don’t see any big differences,” said Michel Nussenzweig, an immunologist at Rockefeller University in New York and a member of the team that published one of the studies on Thursday.

The final result? “Get vaccinated,” he said.

The results are based on laboratory experiments with blood samples from a few vaccinated people and have not yet been assessed by experts. Still, they are consistent with what is known about similar variants, several experts said, and they complement a growing body of research suggesting that the two main vaccines in the United States protect against all of the variants identified so far.

“The takeaway message is that the vaccines against the New York variant and the South African variant as well as the British variant will work,” said Nathan Landau, a virologist at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine who led the study.

The vaccines spur the body to build an expansive immune response using thousands of types of antibodies and different types of immune cells. A subset of these immune fighters, called neutralizing antibodies, is essential to preventing infection. But even when neutralizing antibodies are in short supply or even absent, the rest of the immune system can deploy enough defenses to fight off serious illness and death.

In both new studies, neutralizing antibodies from people who were vaccinated were able to thwart the virus better than those from people who developed antibodies because they had Covid-19. A head-to-head comparison of the two sets of antibodies offered a possible explanation: Antibodies from vaccinated individuals are spread over a wider range of parts of the virus, so no single mutation has a major impact on their effectiveness – vaccines are therefore a better choice against variants than immunity from natural ones Infections.

The variant first identified in New York, known to scientists as the B.1.526, sped through the city after its first discovery in November. By April 13, it was one in four diagnosed cases, and as of April 13, almost half of the cases. Variant B.1.1.7, which brought Great Britain to a standstill, is also widespread in New York. Together, the two account for more than 70 percent of coronavirus cases in the city.

Concern for the variant identified in New York has centered on a form that contains a mutation that scientists call Eek. The Eek mutation subtly changes the shape of the virus, making it difficult for antibodies to target the virus and, as a result, underperforms vaccines.

In the second study, Dr. Landau states that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are only marginally less protective against the variant that devastated the UK and against forms of the variant discovered in New York that do not contain the Eek mutation.

Several laboratory studies have shown that antibodies induced by the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are slightly less effective against a third variant identified in South Africa that also contains Eek. Other vaccines fared worse. South Africa suspended use of the AstraZeneca vaccine after clinical studies showed that the vaccine did not prevent mild or moderate disease of the variant circulating there.

“It already started at a lower level in terms of the immunity it produced,” said Dr. Nut branch about the AstraZeneca vaccine. Regarding the Pfizer and Moderna recordings, he said, “We are so lucky in this country to have these vaccines compared to the rest of the world.”

Florian Krammer, an immunologist at the Icahn School of Medicine on Mount Sinai who was not involved in any of the new studies, said he was more concerned about other countries’ vaccination programs than the variants themselves.

“I’m less worried about variants than I was two months ago,” he said, but added, “I’m worried about countries that don’t have enough vaccines and that don’t have this vaccine launch.” In all honesty, I don’t worry about the US anymore. “

Dr. Landau also tested monoclonal antibodies used to treat Covid-19 against the variants. They found that the cocktail of monoclonal antibodies made by Regeneron was effective against both the variant discovered in New York and the original virus.

The studies are reassuring, but they show that the Eek mutation is being observed, said Jesse Bloom, an evolutionary biologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

“This could certainly be a step towards making the virus a little more resistant to infection- and vaccine-mediated immunity,” said Dr. Bloom. “I don’t think it’s something people need to be alerted about right away, but it definitely impresses us as important.”

Dr. Bloom led the analysis comparing vaccine-induced antibodies with those produced by natural infections. He found that the strongest antibodies bind to multiple sites in a key part of the virus. Even if a mutation affected binding at one site in that region, antibodies targeting the remaining sites would still be protective.

Antibodies induced by the vaccine cover many more sites in this region than those due to natural infection – and are therefore less likely to be affected by a mutation in any one site.

The study only looked at antibodies stimulated by the Moderna vaccine, but the results for the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine are likely to be the same, he added.

“This could potentially be a good thing as the virus creates mutations,” said Dr. Bloom.

Esperanza Spalding’s Quest to Find Healing in Music

Esperanza Spalding has never been one to sit idle. Her wandering spirit has brought the 36-year-old musician great success over the past ten years and has steered her work in new directions. In 2017, Spalding, a bassist, singer, and producer, spent 77 straight hours in the studio writing and arranging songs. The resulting album “Exposure” was pressed directly onto CD and vinyl for a limited release of only 7,777 copies. Her next project, “12 Little Spells”, examined the healing powers of music; Each song correlated with a different part of the body.

With this in mind, Spalding’s new release, a suite of three songs entitled “Triangle”, which is due to be released on Saturday, is intended to strengthen the audience physically and emotionally. But this time she has pandemic tensions in her sights.

“I remembered how the music had supported me,” she said on a recent call from her hometown of Portland, Ore. “And asked me if we could look into these issues in more depth.”

Spalding, a casual conversationalist who effortlessly accesses a wide range of scientific colloquial language, lights up when he unpacks the medical powers of music. But with her youthful curiosity and deliberate cadence, it doesn’t feel like you’re talking to a constipated professor. Over the past year, she spent some time building a Portland retreat where like-minded artists could think and create without disruption to the real world. Occasionally, she jammed with other musicians, including R&B star Raphael Saadiq and jazz guitarist Jeff Parker.

The worries about health and restoration in “Triangle” have been seeping away in Spalding for some time. After the release of “12 Little Spells” in 2018, she took a semester off to teach music at Harvard and moved to Los Angeles to write an opera with the sick jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter.

“I was concerned that Wayne’s health wasn’t going to last and that we couldn’t finish his opera while he could see it,” said Spalding.

But over six months “he came back to life,” she said. “It was like that withered plant that finally got the water and completely transformed before our eyes.”

When the pandemic set in just a month later, she returned to Portland to begin the retreat, where she and 10 other color artists spent a month on 5,000 acres. It’s an idea Spalding had pondered for years.

“People are using this strange, uninvited breath of the pandemic to start the things they’ve been putting off,” she said. “That definitely happened to me.”

The real spark for “Triangle” came at the end of the retreat, where she was sitting alone in a garden after an event, wondering how she could alleviate the stress of isolation. “We have all seen ourselves locked in a situation that we did not design or inquire about,” she said. “It feels like we can’t break out.”

She began creating sketches for songs whose sounds were rooted in Sufism and South Indian Carnatic and Black American music and sent them to potential collaborators.

The compositions – which were written in consultation with music therapists and neuroscientists – are intended to evoke different emotions. The hypnotic “Formwela 1” worn by Spaldings Falsett is supposed to help calm yourself down in stressful times. “So you learn the song and then you can play it in your head yourself if you are stuck in a house and there is no way the dynamic will change at that moment,” said Spalding. The ethereal “Formwela 2” and the soulful “Formwela 3” are intended to calm the interpersonal aggression and re-center the listener as soon as the anger has dissipated.

Three months after the retreat ended, Spalding went to Los Angeles to finish the music with drummer Justin Tyson, a regular contributor to her. keyboardist Phoelix, a go-to producer for Chicago rappers Noname, Smino and Saba; and Saadiq, who worked with D’Angelo, Solange, and Alicia Keys.

“To be honest, she didn’t need anything,” said Saadiq, who produced “Triangle” with Spalding and Phoelix. “She moves so much in how she plays and how she thinks. I compared myself to Phil Jackson – why was he there when Michael Jordan was on the pitch? “

“Triangle” was recorded in his studio. When he heard the final version, he remembered that the sound was so transformative that he could mentally reset himself. The music, Saadiq said, “took everything out of my head. I was 100 percent clear. “

When “Triangle” is played all at once, it digs into your head and stays there. Its meditative mixture of chants, rain noises and vocal repetitions is intended to calm the prevailing fear. “It happens,” said Shorter, who plays on the third track. “It’s out there, but it’s interesting what she’s doing. “Triangle” will be released through Spalding’s Songwright’s Apothecary Lab, where she, other musicians and practitioners in music therapy and medicine will explore how songwriters mix therapeutic sounds into their work. This summer, she’ll be hosting personal pop-up labs across New York City where residents can schedule appointments and have compositions created to suit their mood.

“Basically we want to hear what people want from the music, like, what do you need?” She said. “It’s an invitation to hear what you need a song for, and that tells you what we’re looking for in our research, in our investigation.”

The songs created in the lab will be available on the website. Some of them will be featured when Spalding releases a full album this fall.

It seems like she’s not – at least for now – not interested in the conventional rigors of recording albums, putting them out and going on tour. These days Spalding would rather improvise and see what happens. Still, she understands that her new initiatives may take some getting used to.

“It’s a lot,” she said. “I know that part of my job is to present the form of this project and the offer and make it readable, since it is not an album and not a concert. It’s not that and it’s not that. “

“I want the collaborative truth to be readable,” she added. “That’s part of what is most important to me about sharing music.”

Scientists in Oregon have discovered a native version of a fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus that first appeared in the UK – but now combined with a mutation that may make the variant less susceptible to vaccines.

The researchers have only found a single case of this formidable combination to date, but genetic analysis revealed that the variant was community-acquired and did not occur in the patient.

“We didn’t import this from anywhere else in the world – it happened spontaneously,” said Brian O’Roak, a geneticist at Oregon Health and Science University who led the work. He and his colleagues participate in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention efforts to track variants and have posted their results in databases shared by scientists.

The variant originally identified in the UK, named B.1.1.7, has quickly spread throughout the United States, accounting for at least 2,500 cases in 46 states. This form of the virus is both more contagious and deadly than the original version and is expected to be responsible for most infections in America in a few weeks.

The new version, which surfaced in Oregon, shares the same backbone, but also has a mutation – E484K or “Eek” – seen in variants of the virus circulating in South Africa, Brazil and New York City.

Laboratory studies and clinical studies in South Africa show that the Eek mutation makes current vaccines less effective by weakening the body’s immune response. (The vaccines are still working, but the results are worrying enough that Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have started testing new versions of their vaccines to defeat the variant found in South Africa.)

The B.1.1.7 variant with Eek has also appeared in the UK and has been described by scientists as a “worrying variant”. But the virus identified in Oregon appears to have evolved independently, said Dr. O’Roak.

Dr. O’Roak and colleagues found the variant among coronavirus samples collected by the Oregon State Public Health Lab across the state, including some from a health care outbreak. Of the 13 test results they analyzed, 10 turned out to be B.1.1.7 alone and one as a combination.

Other experts said the discovery wasn’t surprising given that the Eek mutation appeared in forms of the virus around the world. However, the occurrence of the mutation in B.1.1.7 is worth seeing, they said.

In the UK, this version of the variant makes up a small number of cases. By the time the combination developed there, B.1.1.7 had already spread across the country.

“We’re at the point where B.1.1.7 is just rolling out in the US,” said Stacia Wyman, a computational genomics expert at the University of California at Berkeley. “As it evolves and slowly becomes the dominant thing, it could accumulate more mutations.”

Viral mutations can reinforce or weaken each other. For example, the variants identified in South Africa and Brazil contain many of the same mutations, including Eek. But the Brazilian version has a mutation, K417N, that is not present in the South African version.

What you need to know about the vaccine rollout

In a study published Thursday in Nature, the researchers compared antibody responses with all three affected variants – those identified in the UK, South Africa and Brazil. In line with other studies, they found that the variant that beat South Africa was the most resistant to antibodies produced by the immune system.

But the variant circulating in Brazil was not as resistant, despite carrying the Eek mutation. “If you have the second mutation, you don’t see such a bad effect,” said Michael Diamond, a viral immunologist at Washington University in St. Louis who led the study.

It is too early to say whether the Oregon variant will behave like it did in South Africa or Brazil. But the idea that other mutations might weaken Eek’s effects is “excellent news,” said Dr. Wyman.

Overall, she said, the finding in Oregon reinforces the need for people to continue taking precautions, such as wearing a mask, until a significant portion of the population is vaccinated.

“People don’t have to freak out, they just have to be vigilant,” she said. “We cannot give up our vigilance as long as these more transferrable variants are still in circulation.”

President Joe Biden’s administration is being asked to search for possible replacement candidates for Neera Tanden, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter as the decision to head the bureau of administration and budget is on the verge of not passing the Senate.

Numerous Biden allies, including those in the business community, are working for the White House, these people added.

Two names cited as potential replacements are Gene Sperling, who has ties to former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and Ann O’Leary, who has ties to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Biden’s allies are encouraging his advisors to prepare for the possibility the Senate will not approve Tanden, according to the people.

Many of these allies are also warning the White House of another possible scenario: if Tanden doesn’t have the votes to get through the Senate, she could simply withdraw from the nomination herself.

Those who described the lobbying did so on condition of anonymity, as these consultations were private.

Sperling was director of the National Economic Council under Clinton and Obama. O’Leary was the 2016 campaign advisor to Hillary Clinton, who later became Chief of Staff to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

O’Leary has publicly praised Tanden. The White House continued to stand by Tanden, including at the press conference on Monday.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at the briefing that the government had urged lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to support Tanden’s nomination.

“We spoke on the phone with Democrats and Republicans and their offices over the weekend,” said Psaki.

White House and Center for American Progress officials, the Tanden think tank, did not respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Democrats currently control the Senate by a slim majority, but three lawmakers have come forward to say they will vote no to Tanden’s confirmation. One of those who have said they will not support Tanden is Senator Joe Manchin, DW.Va. Sens. Mitt Romney, R-Utah and Susan Collins, R-Maine also have no plans to vote for them.

Each of the three senators cited Tanden’s report on the demolition of federal officials on both sides of the aisle, including Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., The chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, who is currently reviewing her nomination.

During her confirmation hearing, Sanders targeted Tanden’s story of “vicious attacks” against progressives and Sanders himself. In a CNN interview on Friday, Sanders did not say whether he would vote for Tanden, but rather that he would speak to her “early next week” .
