WHO officers strive to determine why delta is a lot extra harmful than earlier Covid strains

World Health Organization officials said they are still trying to understand why the Delta variant is more transmissible and potentially making people sicker than the original strain of coronavirus.

“We’re really trying to better understand why the Delta variant is more portable,” said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical director for Covid-19, at a press conference on Friday. “There are certain mutations in the Delta variant that allow the virus, for example, to attach itself to a cell more easily. There are some laboratory studies that suggest that there is increased replication in some of the human respiratory systems modeled.”

In the past few weeks, new data on the highly transmissible strain has emerged around the world as scientists try to better understand the new threat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned lawmakers Thursday that new research suggests the Delta strain is more contagious than swine flu, the common cold and polio. It’s as contagious as chicken pox. It also appears to have a longer transmission window than the original Covid-19 strain and can make the elderly sicker even if they have been fully vaccinated.

Thursday’s warning came in a confidential document that was reviewed by CNBC and authenticated by the federal health authority.

“The virus itself is, as it begins, a dangerous virus. It is a highly transmittable virus. The Delta variant is even more, ”said Van Kerkhove. “It is twice as transferable as the ancestral tribes.”

WHO officials expect other dangerous variants to emerge as countries struggle to distribute the life-saving vaccines to their populations.

“They get fitter the more they circulate, and therefore the virus is likely to become more transmissible because they develop in such a way that they change over time,” said Van Kerkhove.

She said it is imperative that nations follow public health measures like social distancing and the wearing of masks as nations distribute more vaccines around the world, especially those with the lowest vaccination rates.

We need “around 70% coverage worldwide to really slow down transmission and reduce the risk of new variants appearing,” said Dr. Bruce Aylward, Senior Advisor to the WHO Director General.

However, given current trends, health professionals are not optimistic. “This will not be the last variant of the virus you will hear us talk about,” said Van Kerkhove.

Bob Koester, Revered Determine in Jazz and Blues, Dies at 88

Bob Koester, who founded the influential Chicago blues and jazz label Delmark Records and also owned an equally influential record store where players and fans mingled while looking for new and vintage sounds, died Wednesday at a care center in Evanston, Illinois., Near his home in Chicago. Ms. Koester said the store held a special place in her husband’s heart – so much so that when he finally closed it in 2016, citing rising rents, he almost immediately opened another, Bob’s Blues and Jazz Mart.

“He loved going to the studio in the days when he picked up Junior Wells and Jimmy Dawkins,” she said, “but retail was in his blood.”

He especially loved talking to customers.

“Often times they would come into the store looking for something,” she said, “and he would point them in another direction.”

Robert Gregg Koester was born on October 30, 1932 in Wichita, Kan. His father Edward was a petroleum geologist and his mother Mary (Frank) Koester was a housewife.

He grew up in Wichita. A 78-rpm record by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in his grandfather’s collection fascinated him when he was young, he said in an oral story recorded by the National Association of Music Merchants in 2017. But, he told Richard Marcus in an interview for blogcritics.com in 2008, further musical exploration is not easy.

Ms. Koester said her son will continue to run Bob’s Blues and Jazz Mart. Mr Koester sold Delmark in 2018.

Mr Koester’s record company played an important role in documenting two genres of music, but his wife said that not only did he play a little piano, but he was also untrained himself.

NEW DELHI – Vira Sathidar played the role of a protest singer caught up in India’s frustrating legal system in Court, a 2014 film that won awards in India and around the world. Mr Sathidar died on April 13 in a hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra state, as a result of Covid-19, said his son Ravan. He was 62 years old.

Mr. Sathidar agitated against the deeply rooted caste system in India, under which the lowest – its Dalits or Untouchables – are systematically abused. A high school dropout, he wrote books and articles, edited magazines, and organized street performances. For a short time he ran a bookcase. He was the head of the Maharashtra Chapter of the Confederation of Human Rights Organizations.

“It was a living library,” said his friend Nihal Singh Rathod, “about political science, about social science.”

Vira Sathidar was born on June 7, 1958 in the village of Parsodi near Nagpur, the son of Rauf and Gangubai Sathidar. His father, a farmer, was a staunch supporter of BR Ambedkar, one of India’s most influential thinkers and political figures. Mr. Sathidar’s activism began when he was a union organizer at the mill. In the 1990s he worked with the radical Maoist movement called the Naxalites.

He went underground for a while but became disillusioned. His friend Pradeep Maitra, the Nagpur correspondent for the Hindustan Times, said in an interview: “He was disappointed with the Naxal movement because it emphasized the classless society and ignored the Ambedkar notion of casteless society.”

Together with his son, Mr. Sathidar, who lived in Nagpur, his wife Pushpa Viplav Sathidar and three brothers and a sister survive.

GOP senator says Covid reduction ‘determine shouldn’t be foreordained’ after Biden assembly
