India Covid-19 vaccination drive, Serum Institute director weighs in

India will likely take at least three to four months to complete Covid-19 vaccination efforts for frontline workers and people over 60 or with underlying health conditions, the executive director of the Serum Institute of India said Thursday.

In January, the South Asian country launched the world’s largest vaccination campaign for around 300 million people out of its massive population of 1.3 billion. According to the Indian Ministry of Health, more than 36 million people had been vaccinated by Wednesday evening.

“The number of doses required in India is enormous,” Suresh Jadhav told CNBC’s Capital Connection, adding that the vaccination program is a gigantic task that cannot be completed in a short period of time.

“This program will continue at a rate of about 50 (million) to 60 million doses per month and cover that population of 300 million in an additional three to four months,” he said.

Jadhav attended the Asian Development Bank’s Southeast Asia Development Symposium 2021 this week.

Based in Pune, India, the Serum Institute has become a key player in the Covid vaccination effort in both India and around the world. It is the largest vaccine maker in the world by volume, making the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and Oxford University, known locally as Covishield.

It has delivered millions of doses to the Government of India as well as Covax, a global vaccination initiative led by the World Health Organization and others, to ensure an equitable distribution of the shots in less affluent countries.

In response to growing demand for its Covid vaccine, Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute, asked foreign governments to be patient last month and said, without further explanation, the company had been asked to meet domestic demand first.

Jadhav stated that the Serum Institute is able to fulfill current orders from the Indian government and said it has already delivered around 59 million doses to Covax. He added that the Serum Institute plans to expand capacity by late April or early May to add another 40 to 50 million doses to production.

Currently, the Serum Institute can reportedly produce more than 70 million doses per month.

Last week, the U.S., Japan, and Australia pledged to help Indian companies expand their Covid vaccine manufacturing capacity and add more doses to the global supply pool.

India also uses a locally developed vaccine from Bharat Biotech, which was developed in collaboration with the Indian State Council for Medical Research.

Amazon Staff’ Union Drive Reaches Far Past Alabama

National Football League players were among the first to express their support. Then came Stacey Abrams, the Democratic star who helped turn Georgia blue in the 2020 election.

Actor Danny Glover traveled to Bessemer, Ala. For a press conference last week, where he spoke about the union-friendly leanings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called to urge workers in the Amazon warehouse there to organize. Tina Fey weighed, as did Senator Bernie Sanders.

And on Sunday, President Biden made a resounding declaration of solidarity with the workers who are now voting on whether to form a union in Amazon’s Bessemer camp without naming the company. His video, posted on his official Twitter account, was one of the most haunting statements in recent history in support of union formation by an American president.

“Every worker should have a free and fair choice to join a union,” said Biden.

A union campaign that had purposely stayed under the radar for months has turned into a showdown with stars in recent days to influence workers at Amazon, one of the world’s dominant corporations whose power has grown exponentially during the pandemic. On one side is the retail, wholesale and department store union and its many work-friendly allies in politics, sports and Hollywood. On the flip side, it’s an e-commerce behemoth that has fought off previous union efforts in its U.S. facilities in its more than 25-year history.

This union vote in a referendum not only draws attention to the working conditions in the Bessemer camp, which employs 5,800 people, but also, in particular, to the plight of low-wage and color workers. Many of the workers at the Alabama camp are black, a fact that union organizers highlighted in their campaign to link the vote to the struggle for civil rights in the south.

The Retail Workers Union has a long history of organizing black workers in the poultry and food industries and helping them obtain basic benefits such as paid time off and safety protection, as well as a means of economic security. The union portrays its efforts in Bessemer as part of that legacy.

“This is an organizing campaign on the right to work in the south during the pandemic at one of the largest companies in the world,” said Benjamin Sachs, professor of work and industry at Harvard Law School. “The importance of a union victory there really couldn’t be emphasized enough.”

Warehouse workers began voting by post on February 8, and ballots are due by the end of that month. A union can be formed if a majority of the votes cast is in favor of such a move.

Amazon’s counter-campaign, both inside the warehouse and nationally, has focused on pure economics: the starting wage is $ 15 an hour plus benefits. That’s far more than the competition in Alabama, where the minimum wage is $ 7.25 an hour.

“It is important that employees understand the facts of union membership,” said Heather Knox, an Amazon spokeswoman, in a statement. “We will provide information about this and the electoral process so that you can make an informed decision. If the union vote is successful, it will affect all local employees, and it is important that employees understand what this means for them and their daily lives at Amazon. “The company, which went through a major hiring frenzy last year when domestic customers had sales of $ 386 billion, posted profits of more than $ 22 billion.

In Alabama, some workers are getting tired of the process. One employee recently posted on Facebook: “This union stuff is getting on my nerves. Let it be March 30th !!! “

The situation is getting worse and union leaders accuse Amazon of a number of “anti-union” tactics.

The company has posted signs throughout the warehouse, next to hand disinfection stations and even in toilet cubicles. It sends texts and emails regularly and draws attention to the problems with the unions. The internal company app publishes photos of employees in Bessemer showing how much they love Amazon.

During certain training sessions, company representatives have pointed out the cost of union dues. If some workers asked specific questions in the meetings, then the representatives from Amazon followed them in their workplaces and again emphasized the disadvantages of unions, say employees and organizers. The meetings were called off when the voting began, but the signs are still there, said Jennifer Bates, a union-friendly worker at the warehouse.

In this charged atmosphere, even routine matters have become suspicious. The union has raised questions about changing the timing of a traffic light near the warehouse where work organizers try to speak to workers if they are stopped in their vehicles as they exit the facility.

Amazon asked district officials to change the timing of the light in mid-December, although there is no evidence in the district’s records that the change was made to thwart the union. “Traffic for Amazon is secured by changing shifts,” said the public records as the reason the district changed the light.

Amazon regularly navigates to traffic issues at its facilities, and wasting unpaid time in congested parking lots is a common complaint from Amazon employees on Facebook groups.

However, retail workers union president Stuart Appelbaum questioned the timing of the request in Bessemer, as it did at the height of the organization. “When the light was red, we could answer questions and have a quick chat with the workers,” he said.

Last week the union questioned an offer by the company to Alabama warehouse workers to pay them at least $ 1,000 if they quit by the end of March.

“They are trying to remove the most likely union supporters from their workforce by bribing them to leave and giving up their vote,” said Appelbaum.

But “The Offer,” as it is known among employees, was the same thing Amazon made to workers in all of its warehouses across the country. It’s an annual program that allows the company to reduce its headcount without layoffs after the busy season. It’s been around since at least 2014 when Jeff Bezos wrote about it in a letter to shareholders.

“Once a year we offer our employees to pay for the termination,” said Bezos at the time.

Mr. Appelbaum was not influenced. He said he believed Amazon decided to make the offer in all camps to rule out possible yes votes in Bessemer.

Mr Biden stopped pushing Amazon workers to unionize, but his testimony immediately increased the streak of an already momentous campaign.

“Let me be really clear,” said Mr Biden. “It’s not up to me to decide whether anyone should join a union. But let me be even more clear: It is not up to an employer to decide either. The decision to join a union rests with the workers. Point.”

He added, “Workers in Alabama and across America are voting on whether to unionize in their workplace. This is critical – an extremely important decision. “And it is one, he said, that should be done without intimidation or threats.

Despite the union’s suspicions, she has not filed any formal complaints with the National Labor Relations Board, Appelbaum said. Typically, unions can object to a company’s tactics before an election and the labor authority can intervene.

Should a complaint be filed, the labor authority may find that the election is invalid due to Amazon’s actions. After months of working to build support inside and outside the Amazon camp, the union’s last thing they want is for the labor authority to step in and decide that the elections must be held again.

Harvard Law School’s Mr Sachs said that, despite Mr Biden’s admonitions to meddle in elections, the current labor law allows Amazon to hold certain mandatory meetings with workers to discuss why they should not union and this enables the company to post anti-union messages in the workplace.

By aggressively targeting the union, Amazon risks angering the Washington Democrats, many of whom are already calling for greater antitrust control over large tech companies. Amazon launched a public campaign in support of legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $ 15 an hour and bought prominent ads in the New York Times, Washington Post, and other publications.

In his video on Sunday, President Biden specifically mentioned how unions can help “black and brown workers” and vulnerable workers struggling during the economic crisis sparked by the pandemic.

Ms. Bates, 48, one of the leaders of the union action, started working in the Bessemer camp in May.

She said she was offended by some anti-union efforts by Amazon, particularly what the company told employees that they had to pay nearly $ 500 in union dues every year. Because Alabama is a right to work, there is no such requirement that an employee pay dues in a unionized workplace.

“It annoys me a little because I feel like they know the truth and they are not telling the truth and they take advantage of them because they know that employees come from a community that is considered black and low-income,” said Mrs. Bates, who is black. “It felt really horrible that you were standing there deliberately misleading people. The best way to give to a charity crowdfunding drive with out getting scammed

According to the latest data from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Americans have opened their wallets in response to crises like Covid-19 and racial injustice.

The organization reports a 7.6% increase in the amount donated in the first nine months of 2020. Leading the increase: lower contributions of $ 250 or less.

At the same time, non-traditional fundraising campaigns through crowdfunding sites like GoFundMe had unprecedented success over the past year. According to the site’s 2020 Giving Report, the year was the largest fundraiser in the site’s history – $ 44 million to fight hunger in an action led by Leonardo DiCaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs.

GoFundMe also announced that it held various $ 625 million fundraising drives in support of Covid between March and June. 500,000 donors have contributed to the official George Floyd Memorial Fund, the most individual donor ever won for a GoFundMe campaign.

Add to this thousands of tiny drives for everything from people’s medical expenses to their tuition fees, and charity experts agree that crowdfunding is and will likely stay a great alternative to traditional charity fundraising.

Boston-based marketing consultant Julia Campbell, who works with nonprofits, attributes the shift to what she believes is an unjustified distrust of nonprofits, especially younger donors.

“They don’t want to give money that they think is institutionalized,” Campbell told CNBC’s American Greed. “I think that has hit the nonprofit sector even more as trust wanes.”

A donation to an online fundraising campaign – whether via GoFundMe, Facebook or other websites – can, however, involve its own risks, despite the extensive security precautions that the platforms have taken.

Crowd scamming

In one of the most notorious cases of fundraiser trying to suppress a scam, New Jersey’s Mark D’Amico and Katelyn McClure raised more than $ 400,000 to help Johnny Bobbitt – a homeless man who McClure ran into after a petrol shortage met Philadelphia in 2017.

When the three of them told the story, Bobbitt was a veteran who had lost his luck. He saw McClure stranded on the side of the road and came to her aid. He went to a gas station, spent his last $ 20 to buy her gasoline, and helped her on her way.

McClure and D’Amico launched a GoFundMe campaign that went viral. But the story began to unravel when Bobbitt later claimed he hadn’t received any of the crowdsourcing funds and even filed a lawsuit against the couple.

Prosecutors said D’Amico and McClure spent and gambled away most of the money. And it turned out that Bobbitt was also involved in the fraud in exchange for some of the money. The story of McClure running out of gas and Bobbitt coming to her aid was fiction.

Adrienne Gonzalez, founder of the watchdog website GoFraudMe.com, said the three were dangerously close to getting away with their cheating until Bobbitt suspected that his criminal partners had cheated on him.

“Had they split it up three ways and given the homeless man his cut, would we ever have heard of it? No, I don’t think we would,” she said.

Bobbitt and McClure pleaded guilty to the fraud. Bobbitt was sentenced to one year probation for conspiracy to steal by fraud. He is convicted of a single federal conspiracy on money laundering in October.

McClure has yet to be convicted of second degree theft through deception and conspiracy to launder money. She has agreed to testify against D’Amico, her former boyfriend.

D’Amico has pleaded guilty to a single state charge of misuse of entrusted property and has been sentenced to five years in prison. But he has pleaded not guilty of 16 point charges of fraud and conspiracy. His trial is suspended because of the pandemic.

GoFundMe said it honored its guarantee and returned all of the money raised in the fraudulent campaign, adding to the 14,000 people who donated in total.

CEO Rob Solomon told NBC News in 2019 that the site had tightened its anti-fraud measures following the attempted fraud. The website relies heavily on the user community to report suspicious activity. He said the 2017 scam couldn’t happen today.

“Abuse on the platform is very rare. Less than a tenth of 1 percent of all campaigns lead to abuse,” he said.

Sniff test

If an online fundraiser appeals to you and you believe that an established charity cannot meet the need, Campbell suggests stepping back and doing additional due diligence before donating.

“There’s a sniff test,” she said. “What is the purpose? How are the funds used? Does that sound suspicious in any way?”

Look for details about the intended recipient of the money. Look for their social media profiles.

“See if you just opened your account like you just got on Facebook this month,” said Campbell. “Do you have less than 40 friends? And look at the photos and pictures they are using. If they only have one photo, it is most likely a scam account and you should be clear about control.”

Also, take a close look at the photos on the fundraiser website to make sure they are real. You can do a google reverse image search by dragging the photo into the site’s search window. This can tell you if the fundraiser uses a photo or an image that was used by someone else.

Be especially careful when it comes to someone raising money for third parties, like D’Amico and McClure, who are raising funds for Bobbitt. What’s the connection? Is it real

“Look for specific details for the victim, for the family, and then find your own connections,” Campbell said. “Have your friends and family donated? Are they in any way connected to this person?”

Charity begins at home

GoFundMe has raised 65 million donations over the past 10 years, including many to charities. The organization says 110,000 charities benefited from their fundraising drives.

Campbell believes the platform has caught on with people who want a more hands-on approach to giving rather than donating money to a large, impersonal, national charity.

“They want to go and actually give coats to the homeless. They want to make sandwiches and serve them,” she said. However, a more effective approach could be to contribute to local organizations.

“I believe in national charities, but it’s the best way to donate locally, and only donate to causes you care about, helping nonprofits, and building the capacity of your local library, food bank, and animal shelter help the community, “she said.

Experts agree that despite last year’s fundraising records, challenges in fighting the pandemic have forced many charities to lay off employees or curtail services.

That makes it important to pass on, regardless of the platform and the amount.

“I think the perception is that $ 10 is going to go into a deep, dark hole,” said Campbell. “Trust me when I say $ 10, especially if you do it monthly, it can make such a big difference to these organizations.”

UK man makes last-ditch effort to get better misplaced bitcoin onerous drive

LONDON – A British man who accidentally threw away a hard drive containing a lot of Bitcoin, again urges local city officials to have him look for it in a landfill.

James Howells, a 35-year-old IT engineer from Newport, Wales, said he threw the device away when he cleared his house in 2013. He claims he has two identical laptop hard drives and wrongly needed the one with the cryptographic “private key” to access his bitcoins and spend them in the trash.

After all these years, Howells is still confident that he can get the bitcoin back. Although the outer part of the hard drive could be damaged and rusted, he believes the hard drive inside could still be intact.

“There’s a good chance the disk in the drive is still intact,” he told CNBC. “Data recovery experts could then rebuild the drive or read the data directly from the platter.”

Howells says he has 7,500 bitcoins, which at today’s prices would be worth more than $ 280 million. He says the only way to get it back is by using the hard drive that he threw in the trash eight years ago.

But he needs permission from his local council to search a dump that he believes contains the lost hardware. The landfill is not open to the public and entering it is considered a criminal offense.

Howells has offered to donate 25% of the shipment, valued at around $ 70.8 million, to a Covid Relief Fund for his hometown if he can dig up the hard drive. He has also promised to fund the excavation project with the support of an undisclosed hedge fund.

However, Newport City Council has so far denied its search requests, citing environmental and financial concerns. And it doesn’t seem like local officials will budge anytime soon.

“As far as I know, they have already turned down the offer,” Howells said. “Without even hearing our plan of action or having the opportunity to present our mitigation of their environmental concerns, it’s just a resounding no every time.”

A spokesman for the council told CNBC that it had “been contacted several times since 2013 to investigate the possibility of retrieving a piece of IT hardware believed to contain bitcoins.” The first time “several months” after Howells first discovered the drive was gone.

“The council has told Mr Howells on several occasions that excavations are not possible under our permit and that excavations themselves would have a huge impact on the environment in the area,” said the council spokesman.

“The cost of digging the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds with no guarantees that it will be found or that it will still work.”

It’s not hard to imagine why Howells would want to save the equipment. Bitcoin prices have skyrocketed in the last few months, hitting an all-time high near $ 42,000 last week before falling sharply.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that a programmer in San Francisco was banned from 7,002 bitcoins – valued at around $ 267.8 million today – for forgetting the password used to unlock a small hard drive with the private one Key to a digital wallet was required.

Bitcoin’s network is decentralized, which means that it is not controlled by a single person but by a computer network. Every transaction comes from a wallet with a “private key”. This is a digital signature and provides mathematical proof that the transaction came from the owner of the wallet.

Since it is not always practical to have all windows wide open, especially in the dead of winter, Dr. Mathai and his colleagues also modeled several other options. They found that the most intuitive solution – having the driver and passenger each roll down their own windows – was better than keeping all the windows closed, an even better strategy was to open the windows facing each occupant. This configuration allows fresh air to flow in through the rear left window and through the front right window and helps create a barrier between the driver and front passenger.

“It’s like an air curtain,” said Dr. Mathai. “It flushes out all of the air that is released by the passenger and creates a strong wind region between the driver and front passenger.”

Richard Corsi, air quality expert at Portland State University, praised the new study. “It’s pretty nifty what they did,” he said, although he cautioned that changing the number of passengers in the car or the speed of travel could affect the results.

Dr. Corsi, co-author of the report with Dr. Allen in the last year has since developed his own model for inhaling coronavirus aerosols in various situations. His results, which have not yet been published, suggest that a 20-minute drive with someone who is emitting infectious coronavirus particles can be much riskier than sharing a classroom or restaurant with that person for more than an hour.

“The focus was on superspreader events,” because they affect a lot of people, he said. “But I think what people miss sometimes is that superspreader events are started by someone who is infected and come to that event, and we don’t talk enough about where that person got infected.”

In a follow-up study that has not yet been published, Dr. Mathai found that opening the windows halfway was about the same benefit as opening it fully, while cracking it was only a quarter of the way less effective.

Dr. Mathai said the overall results would most likely apply to many four-door, five-seat cars, not just the Prius. “For minivans and pickups, I would still say that opening all the windows or opening at least two windows can be beneficial,” he said. “In addition, I would extrapolate too much.”
