In Covid-19 Vaccine Data, LGBTQ People Fear Invisibility

Even if some people are reluctant to reveal such data, research shows that clinicians overestimate how many patients would refuse to self-report. A 2017 study found that around 80 percent of doctors felt that patients would be reluctant to provide this data, but only 10 percent of patients said they would refuse to do so.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also stated that it should be optional for patients to report their gender identity. The ability to report yourself is key, according to proponents. “It’s important that people identify like any other demographic,” said Chris Grasso, vice president of information technology and data services at the Fenway Institute. “We want to normalize data collection – just like we ask people questions about their age, race, or ethnicity.”

LGBTQ advocates have been raising alarm bells throughout the pandemic, writing letters to health organizations and the new government, and asking authorities to report on coronavirus testing, care outcomes and vaccine intake in their communities.

Some states and jurisdictions have started moving forward: Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Washington, DC are collecting and reporting some of this data in their Covid-19 monitoring systems. And in September, the Governor of California signed a bill requiring healthcare providers to collect the data for all communicable diseases.

But it wasn’t until March that the California Department of Health hadn’t released its sexual orientation and gender identity statistics. And other officials raising concerns from those trying to keep their sexuality private have expressed concern about the gathering of this information. For example, Colorado Governor Jared Polis, who is gay, said in a discussion with other elected officials in April 2020, “There are a lot of people in Colorado who don’t want this information out there.”

Despite the lack of data, the CDC notes that LGBTQ people may have more severe Covid-19 results than heterosexual people, in part due to a higher prevalence of pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer, obesity and smoking .

Daily Covid infection rates are falling in 30 states and the District of Columbia, data from Johns Hopkins University shows, and one in three Americans is now fully vaccinated.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released on Friday, shows that 45% of the US population is fully vaccinated with at least one dose of vaccine and greater than 33%.

The pace of daily vaccinations in the country remained stable from Thursday’s level but has been declining for weeks, 38% below its peak.

A third of Americans are now fully vaccinated with a shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine or two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, according to CDC data.

President Joe Biden set a goal earlier this week to get 70% of adults in the United States to get at least one dose of a Covid vaccine by July 4th. By Thursday, about 57% of adults had done this.

The Oscars are Hollywood’s biggest night out, but fewer and fewer people outside of that circle are attending the event.

The decline in both metrics is not entirely surprising, given that awards shows have generally seen a decline in viewership over the past few years. And only a few of the nominees were considered mainstream as the cinemas have largely been closed for a year due to the pandemic.

The Emmy Awards, which aired in September, had the lowest attendance for such a ceremony in the history of the television academy. The show only drew 5.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen, which is a 14% decrease from last year’s event.

The Grammys also saw astounding declines. This year’s awards show drew 9.23 million viewers, a 51% decrease from 18.69 million who chose the program in 2020.

Do people get bored at big awards shows or do they just look at each other differently?

Some argue that the flood of too many live awards ceremonies has saturated the market and made world-class awards shows like the Grammys, Emmys, and Oscars less exciting for viewers.

The Golden Globes, Video Music Awards (VMAs), Billboard Music Awards, Country Music Awards, BET Awards, People Choice Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and countless other ceremonies have been televised in recent years. With so little curation, it wouldn’t be surprising if viewers felt tired.

Not to mention, younger viewers, many of whom have cut cables, aren’t as willing to watch the traditional 16-20 minute commercials per hour that come with a live TV broadcast. A three-hour show like the Oscars can be an hour’s worth of advertising.

There are also some who complain that Hollywood uses its awards shows to make political and social statements. Regina King, who opened the Oscars on Sunday, used her time to point out how Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of three charges last year in the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black.

“Now I know a lot of you at home will reach for your remote when you feel like Hollywood is preaching to you, but as a mother of a black son, I know the fear so many live with and no, the amount of fame or wealth changes that, “she said.

Then there are the nominees themselves. Nielsen’s data shows that more people were hired in the years that certain, more commercially popular films were nominated. The 2019 ceremony, which reached 29.6 million viewers, became nominees from popular films such as “Black Panther”, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”, “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Star is Born”.

Of course, there is a chance that people might watch these awards shows, but they might see the programs differently. The Nielsen data does not include numbers for viewers who have chosen to watch one of the top awards shows on streaming platforms.

Dan Rayburn, a media and streaming analyst, said one obstacle is that the streaming industry has not yet agreed on a set definition of viewer. Each streaming service has a different method of reporting how many people have seen a particular movie, TV show, or live program. This can make it difficult to make comparisons between platforms and between those platforms and traditional cable providers.

The United States reports an average of 2.7 million Covid-19 vaccinations per day over the past week. This is according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a high daily rate but below the highs two weeks ago.

BioNTech expects information on youngsters ages 5 to 11 as early as finish of summer season

Data on how well the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine works in children ages 5-11 could be available by the end of this summer, the scientist who helped develop the shot told CNBC.

If clinical trials go well and the Food and Drug Administration approves, young children could be vaccinated by the end of the year, said BioNTech Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ozlem Tureci, late Thursday.

“We expect the data by the end of summer or fall this year. We will then submit it to the regulatory authorities and, depending on how quickly they react, we will receive approval by the end of the year to also immunize younger children.” ” She said.

In late March, Pfizer and BioNTech began a clinical trial testing their vaccine in healthy children aged 6 months to 11 years. This is a critical step in gaining regulatory approval to vaccinate young children and fight the pandemic.

In the first phase of the study, companies will determine the preferred dosage level for three age groups – between 6 months and 2 years, 2 and 5 years, and between 5 and 11 years. Dosages are assessed 11 first in children ages 5 to 11 before researchers move on to the other age groups, they said.

Since companies rate the older age group first, data on children under 5 could be “a little later,” Tureci told CNBC.

The two-dose vaccine is already approved for use in people aged 16 and over. Earlier this month, Pfizer and BioNTech asked the FDA to allow their Covid-19 vaccine to be given to children ages 12-15 in an emergency.

The companies announced in late March that the vaccine was 100% effective in a study of more than 2,000 adolescents. They also said the vaccine produced a “robust” antibody response in the children that outperformed that in a previous study in older teenagers and young adults. The side effects were generally consistent with those seen in adults, they added.

Vaccinating children is seen as critical to ending the pandemic. The nation is unlikely to achieve herd immunity – if enough people in a given community have antibodies to a given disease – until children can be vaccinated, health officials and experts say.

According to the government, children make up around 20% of the total US population. According to experts, between 70% and 85% of the US population must be vaccinated against Covid to achieve herd immunity and some adults may refuse to get the shots.

In addition to testing the vaccine in young children, Pfizer and BioNTech are testing whether a third dose of the vaccine would provide a better immune response against new variants of the virus.

Ugur Sahin, CEO of BioNTech, told CNBC on Thursday that he was “confident” that the vaccine would be effective against B.1.617, a highly contagious variant of coronavirus first identified in India.

Still, he said, people will likely need a third shot of his two-dose vaccine as immunity to the virus wanes. Researchers see a decrease in antibody responses to the virus after eight months, he added.

“If we give a boost, we could actually increase the antibody response beyond what we started with, and that could give us a real comfort of protection for at least 12 months, maybe 18 months,” said Sahin. “And that is really important at a time when all variants are coming.”

Sahin also said he anticipates demand for the shot will continue to rise, adding that the company will increase production capacity of the vaccine to 3 billion doses by the end of 2021. In December, Sahin expects the company’s production target to increase to 400 million cans per month.

The rate of Covid vaccinations in the US has continued to decline in the past few days, as the 7-day average of daily shots taken fell to 2.7 million on Monday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That is the lowest level since the end of March.

Daily vaccinations rose for weeks, reaching an average of nearly 3.4 million on April 13, before falling.

The US reports nearly 62,000 new coronavirus infections daily based on a seven day average compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That level is above the country’s recent low of 53,600 a day in late March, but has moved down over the past week.

In Michigan, where the daily number of cases per capita per country is highest, the outbreak may show signs of subsiding. The state reports an average of nearly 6,200 new cases per day for the past week, compared to nearly 7,700 per day a week ago.

According to Johns Hopkins data, the US reports an average of 700 deaths per day in Covid. The nationwide death toll from the pandemic has exceeded 570,000.
