CDC study finds disparities in coverage between rural and urban areas

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data published Tuesday shows 60% of U.S. adults have received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.

The milestone comes roughly six weeks ahead of July 4, the deadline for President Joe Biden’s latest vaccination goal of getting 70% of adults to receive one dose or more.

U.S. case counts fell further Tuesday, with the seven-day average of daily new cases now at about 31,200, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

About 48% of the U.S. population has received one dose or more of a vaccine and 38% is fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

Of those age 18 and older, 60% are at least partially vaccinated, and in some places that figure is even higher. In seven states — Vermont, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, and New Jersey — more than 70% of adults have received at least one dose.

For the first time in almost a year, the US is reporting an average of less than 30,000 new Covid cases per day.

The seven-day average of new infections is 29,100 on Thursday, according to Johns Hopkins University. This is the first time since June 22, 2020 that the average has fallen below 30,000.

Federal data shows the country reported an average of 1.8 million daily vaccinations over the past week, with 48% of the population receiving one shot or more.

After around 30,100 reported cases on Thursday, the nationwide average of new infections every day is 29,100. The country had reported fewer than 30,000 cases for five consecutive days as of Wednesday, another milestone not seen since last summer.

The pace of daily infections is down 18% from a week, and a CNBC analysis of the Hopkins data shows daily case numbers in 40 states and the District of Columbia decreased by 5% or more over the past week.

The U.S. has reported fewer than 30,000 cases for five consecutive days, data from Johns Hopkins University shows, bringing the 7-day average of new infections every day to about 30,300.

It is the first time since mid-June that the number of daily cases has fallen below the 30,000 mark for five consecutive days.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an average of 1.8 million vaccinations per day have been reported over the past week, and 48% of the population have received at least one dose of vaccine.

Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday that they were awaiting data from studies testing Covid-19 vaccines on pregnant women this summer and on children 6 months old by the end of the year.

The deputy main director Dr. Anne Schuchat told lawmakers that the CDC has already received “reassuring data” on vaccines given to women in the third trimester. “We expect more data this summer, especially on vaccines given earlier in pregnancy,” she said at a Senate hearing on the agency’s annual budget.

Although the vaccines are not yet approved for use in pregnant women, Schuchat said that pregnant women should have access to the vaccines because Covid can make them sicker than other people.

“Women who are pregnant and get Covid have worse experiences with the infection than non-pregnant women,” said Schuchat. “More time in the intensive care unit, more risk of serious consequences, including those rare deaths. Covid also makes pregnancy difficult by increasing the risk of premature delivery and leading to other types of complications.”

Schuchat also said new data shows vaccinated mothers can transfer their Covid antibodies to their babies while breastfeeding.

Dr. White House chief medical officer Anthony Fauci said separately on Wednesday that “the baby would get antibodies to the virus through the placenta during pregnancy,” which persist for a few months after birth, he said. Fauci also said in an interview with Axios that mothers can transmit their Covid antibodies while breastfeeding, which extends their babies’ immunity.

Children under the age of 12 “could likely be vaccinated by the end of calendar year 2021 and no later than the first quarter of 2022,” he said.

According to a CNBC analysis of the data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, Covid case numbers are falling 5% or more in almost all US states as the nationwide number of infections and deaths continues its downward trend.

In the US, an average of 1.8 million vaccinations per day were given over the past week, according to federal data, and 47.5% of the population received at least one dose of vaccine.

The country reports an average of 32,000 daily infections in the past seven days, a sharp drop from more than 71,000 daily cases from mid-April. That seven-day average of 32,000 is the lowest since late June.

The average daily caseload has dropped 5% or more in 42 states over the past week, according to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins’ data. However, President Joe Biden warned on Monday that the number of cases in US states with low Covid-19 vaccination rates could rise again.

After weeks of declines, the pace of daily vaccinations in the US has improved in recent days.

The country reports an average of 2.2 million shots a day over the past week, federal data shows, which was slightly above Saturday’s most recent low, when it fell below 2 million for the first time since early March.

A key advisory body to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will vote on Wednesday whether to recommend the expansion of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine to children ages 12-15. Confirmation is the final step before officials authorize states to open vaccinations for millions of teenagers on Thursday.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the country reported an average of 2 million vaccinations per day over the past week, a 40% decrease from the peak.

From the Wastewater Drain, Solid Pandemic Data

Although Covid-19 is primarily a respiratory disease, research early in the pandemic found that people infected with the coronavirus frequently toss it in their stools. This finding, coupled with the magnitude and urgency of the crisis, immediately sparked interest in tracking the virus by sampling wastewater.

By finding and then counting specific coronavirus genes in wastewater, the researchers hoped to determine if the virus was present in a particular region and how widespread it was. It wasn’t long before sewage monitoring projects started popping up all over Kansas City, Missouri, until Kathmandu, Nepal.

The resulting data, which now appears in a flurry of academic papers and preprints, has provided strong evidence of the principle. Scientists have detected the virus in all sorts of environments: in treated and untreated water, in sludge and settled solids, in sewers and septic tanks, in pit latrines and open drainage systems. They found it in water that ran into huge wastewater treatment plants and out of schools, dormitories, and nursing homes. “It’s just amazing how robust this tool has become,” said Peter Grevatt, executive director of the Water Research Foundation.

Teams around the world – in the US, France, Portugal, India, Iran, Brazil, Canada and elsewhere – also found that the sewage data appeared to be an accurate indicator of what was happening in the real world. As the number of diagnosed Covid-19 cases increased in an area, more coronavirus appeared in wastewater. Virus levels fell when areas were closed and increased when they were reopened.

Several teams have also confirmed that wastewater can serve as an early warning system. Virus concentrations in wastewater often peaked days before doctors saw a peak in official Covid-19 cases.

This lead time, which can range from a few days to two weeks, depends in part on the robustness of local clinical testing programs. Scientists say, if more people are tested for the virus more often, the sewage data will offer less warning. The lead time is also because infected people often start shedding the SARS-CoV-2 virus before they experience symptoms and then often delay seeking medical care once they get sick.

“I think wastewater has proven to be one of the most objective means of understanding what SARS-CoV-2 is doing in our society,” said Gertjan Medema, a microbiologist at the KWR Water Research Institute in the Netherlands.
