More than 50% of the U.S. population has received at least one Covid vaccine shot, federal data shows, as nationwide case counts continue to fall.

Moderna on Tuesday applied for full Food and Drug Administration approval of its Covid-19 vaccine. Surveys have shown that FDA approval could inspire more people to get the vaccine, which is currently on the U.S. market under an emergency use authorization.

The seven-day average of daily new infections fell below 20,000 on Monday, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, though many states did not report data due to the Memorial Day holiday.

U.S. share of the population vaccinated

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that 50.5% of Americans have received at least one dose and about 41% are fully vaccinated.

Among those 18 and older, roughly 63% have received one dose or more. President Joe Biden has set a goal of getting that figure to 70% by the Fourth of July.

U.S. Covid cases

Twenty-five states and territories did not publish Covid data on Monday due to the holiday, according to Hopkins, bringing the seven-day average of daily infections to below 20,000 for the first time since the early days of the pandemic.

Cases may tick upward in the coming days as states report backlogged data from the holiday.

Prior to the holiday weekend, U.S. case counts had been trending downward for weeks.

U.S. vaccine shots administered

The latest seven-day average of vaccines administered, which is also impacted by the lack of holiday weekend data, sits at 1.3 million shots administered.

U.S. Covid deaths

The latest seven-day average of U.S. Covid deaths is 607, Hopkins data shows, which reflects the absence of Memorial Day reporting for many states and territories.

The latest trend in the daily U.S. death count is further complicated by audits in which state health departments will attribute a batch of previously unreported cases or deaths to a single day, even if those occurred previously. Oklahoma and Maryland last week each added hundreds of deaths to their pandemic totals, all of which were reported for a single day.

Roughly half of all Americans have received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine, based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data published Thursday, as nationwide infection levels continued their downward trend.

New Covid cases are 23,033 per day, on a seven-day average, down 21% from a week prior, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

U.S. share of the population vaccinated

CDC data shows 49.9% of the U.S. population has received one shot or more, with 40% having completed a full vaccination program.

Among those aged 18 and older, 62% are at least partially vaccinated.

Data in a Kaiser Family Foundation survey published Friday suggests that adult vaccination rates could reach 70% in the next few months. President Joe Biden is aiming to hit that target by July 4.

In addition to 62% of survey respondents reporting they have received one dose or more, 4% said they want the vaccine as soon as possible. Another 4% of adults — who said they want to “wait and see” before getting a shot — reported that they have already scheduled an appointment or plan to get the vaccine in the next 3 months.

The share of respondents saying they will “definitely not” get vaccinated or only do so if required has remained steady at around 20% in the past few monthly Kaiser Foundation surveys.

U.S. vaccine shots administered

About 1.6 million vaccine shots have been reported administered each day on average over the past week, CDC data shows.

A handful of states have reported that vaccine incentive programs have increased local vaccination numbers in some demographics after recent drops.

U.S. Covid cases

The seven-day average of daily U.S. Covid cases was 23,033 as of Thursday, down more than 6,000 from a week ago, according to Johns Hopkins data.JHU

Case counts have not been this low since June 2020.

Average daily case counts have fallen by 5% or more in 43 states and the District of Columbia over the past week, a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins data shows.

In some countries outside of the U.S., infection levels are rising. Bahrain, for example, has seen a record-setting spike in cases since the beginning of May despite having 55% of its population vaccinated with at least one dose, according to data from Our World in Data.

U.S. Covid deaths

The latest seven-day average of daily U.S. Covid deaths is 667, JHU data shows, though the release of backlogged data from multiple states in recent days obscures the latest trend.

Wednesday’s figures included 373 deaths reported for Oklahoma, which the state announced is part of an “ongoing effort to investigate and reconcile backlog of COVID-19 related deaths.”

Maryland on Thursday added about 500 previously unreported deaths to its totals.

In some situations, state health departments will attribute a batch of previously unreported cases or deaths to a single day, even if those may have occurred previously. The data may be updated to reflect different dates in the future.

Prior to the reporting issues this week, the daily death toll had been on the decline for weeks.

The average daily number of Covid cases in the US is below less than half of the level recorded in early May, data from Johns Hopkins University shows.

The country is seeing an average of 23,407 new infections per day for the past week, compared to 49,600 on May 1, a decrease of 53%.

Federal data shows that the US reports an average of 1.7 million daily vaccinations and nearly 50% of the US population has received one dose or more.

US Covid cases

The 7-day average of daily US Covid cases is 23,407 on Wednesday, according to Johns Hopkins data, a 23% decrease from the previous week and 53% from the start of the month.

The number of cases has not been so low since June 2020.

According to a CNBC analysis of the Johns Hopkins data, the average daily case number in 44 states and the District of Columbia has decreased by 5% or more over the past week.

In other countries, the outbreaks are worsening. India is currently the epicenter of the global coronavirus pandemic, but other countries from Argentina in Latin America to Nepal in Asia have reported record increases in Covid cases in recent weeks.

US Covid deaths

The country reports an average of 571 daily Covid deaths over the past seven days, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Wednesday’s numbers include 373 Oklahoma reported deaths announced by the state as part of “ongoing efforts to investigate and clear the backlog in COVID-19 deaths.” In some situations, state health departments assign a number of previously unreported cases or deaths to a single day, even if they may have occurred previously.

While this reporting problem makes the latest trend difficult to interpret, the pace of daily nationwide Covid deaths has been declining for weeks.

US vaccine shots administered

According to CDC data, an average of 1.7 million vaccine shots were given per day over the past week, a 5% decrease from the previous week.

Daily vaccinations have largely declined since peaking at 3.4 million shots per day in mid-April, although the average has been between 1.7 million and 2 million for nearly two weeks.

US percentage of the vaccinated population

Almost half of the US population has received at least one dose of vaccine, with 40% fully vaccinated, CDC data shows.

On Wednesday, Pennsylvania became the 10th state to report that 70% of its adult population is at least partially vaccinated. The other nine states are Vermont, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and New Mexico.

For those who are not vaccinated, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky to be cautious about the upcoming Memorial Day holidays, noting that those who got a shot are protected.

“If you are not vaccinated, our instructions have not changed for you,” Walensky said at a press conference at the White House on Tuesday. “You are still at risk of infection. You still need to mask and take other precautions.”

Last year, US Covid cases rose after the holiday weekend when vaccines were not available at the time.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data published Tuesday shows 60% of U.S. adults have received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine.

The milestone comes roughly six weeks ahead of July 4, the deadline for President Joe Biden’s latest vaccination goal of getting 70% of adults to receive one dose or more.

U.S. case counts fell further Tuesday, with the seven-day average of daily new cases now at about 31,200, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
