President Joe Biden met with U.S. police chiefs and elected officials at the White House on Monday to discuss his plan to combat a sustained nationwide surge in gun violence.

“We recognize that we must come together for the first responsibility of democracy: to protect one another,” said Biden before the meeting. “And that’s what the American people are looking for when it comes to reducing violent crime and gun violence.”

Biden was accompanied to the White House by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, New York City Democratic candidate for mayoral, Eric Adams, head of community intervention, and several mayors and police chiefs from large and medium-sized US cities to develop his gun crime prevention strategy to discuss. which was unveiled last month.

The meeting takes place amid an epidemic of gun violence in several of the country’s largest cities, a growing political issue for Democrats and the central theme of Republican efforts to take over the House of Representatives and the Senate next year.

The Biden administration faces a major hurdle to reconcile the fight against gun violence with continued pressure on police reform in the US following the assassination of George Floyd last year, especially as the president tried to break away from Defund to remove the Police “of the Democrats. Messaging.

During the meeting, Biden encouraged communities to use $ 350 billion from the American Rescue Plan, a $ 1.9 trillion pandemic relief plan passed by Congress in March, to help improve public safety. This includes strengthening law enforcement and developing community services that prevent crime.

A memo sent out by the administration on Monday provided examples of how cities are using the funds.

New York City, for example, suggested using more than $ 44 million to expand community violence intervention models and reinstall an additional 200 police services to perform on-site administrative tasks.

Other cities listed in the memo include Washington, which proposed using $ 59 million to provide seats for police cadets, community services, and financial aid that would help citizens involved in gun violence, again return to the church.

“The American bailouts, which go directly to local governments like ours, allow us not only to have the officials we need, but also the local violence interrupters we need to fund pilot programs that help returning citizens … that Ecosystem to make cities safer, “Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said in an interview with MSNBC.

The American rescue plan, however, is only part of Biden’s overall strategy to curb violent crime.

The strategy also strengthens federal gun law enforcement by introducing a new “zero tolerance” policy for gun dealers who violate federal gun sales laws, and delegates new powers to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to revoke dealer licenses revoke at first violations.

Other federal efforts the strategy brought with it included the establishment of five new federal strike forces, led by the ATF, to monitor and intercept arms smuggling along several major corridors for the arms trade between major cities.

Federal statistics show a significant increase in homicides nationwide, with an increase of 30% in 2020 compared to the previous year.

Across the country, mayors and police chiefs are struggling to explain what is behind the rise in mass shootings, murders and other violent crimes.

Experts point to a perfect storm of factors that collided during the pandemic. These include a surge in private arms sales, widespread unemployment, and Covid jobs that stay at home, leaving people trapped and with little to do.

At the same time, protests against police killing of blacks may have diverted police resources from traditional policing and undermined public confidence in the prosecution.

However, many of the factors believed to have contributed to the rise in violent crime are difficult to quantify.

And since policing is typically highly localized in America, Biden’s options at the federal level are limited.

SINGAPORE – Singapore has ordered Facebook, Twitter, and a local publisher to correct a false statement that implies a new variant of coronavirus from the city-state that is at risk of spreading to India.

Singapore Health Minister Ong Ye Kung instructed the two social media giants and SPH magazines to provide a correction notice to their users in Singapore. SPH Magazines has a popular forum called HardwareZone.

“There is no new” Singapore “variant of Covid-19. There is also no evidence of a Covid-19 variant that is” extremely dangerous “for children,” said the Singapore Ministry of Health.

“The strain that prevails in many of the Covid-19 cases discovered in Singapore in recent weeks is variant B.1.617.2, native to India,” he added. “The existence and distribution of variant B.1.617.2 in India goes back to the discovery of the variant in Singapore. This was publicly known and reported by various media on May 5, 2021.”

The Covid variant B.1.617 was detected for the first time in India last year. The World Health Organization recently named the B.1.617 a “worrying variant”, indicating that it has become a global health threat.

What happened?

The move from Singapore came after unsubstantiated comments by an Indian politician sparked a diplomatic incident between the two countries earlier this week.

The chief minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, tweeted on Tuesday that a new coronavirus variant in Singapore is said to be extremely dangerous for children and could lead to a third wave in India. He has provided no evidence to support his claims.

What was the reaction like?

Kejriwal was publicly reprimanded by the foreign ministers of both countries.

“Politicians should stick to the facts! There is no such thing as a ‘Singapore variant’,” said Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s foreign minister, in a tweet in response to Kejriwal’s claim.

The Singapore Foreign Ministry said Wednesday it regretted Kejriwal’s “unsubstantiated claims”.

“MFA is disappointed that a prominent political figure did not establish the facts before making such allegations. MFA met with Indian High Commissioner P Kumaran this morning to express those concerns,” the State Department said.

India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the two countries are “solid partners” in the fight against the pandemic.

“Irresponsible comments from those who should know better, however, can harm long-term partnerships. Let me be clear – Delhi CM doesn’t speak for India,” he said on Twitter. Jaishankar was previously India’s High Commissioner in Singapore.

Indian Minister of Civil Aviation Hardeep Singh Puri responded to Kejriwal’s comments on Twitter, noting that international flights to India have been suspended since March 2020.

He also pointed out that India and Singapore have no air travel bubble and that New Delhi only operates return flights from the city-state to bring back stranded Indians.

“Even so, we are keeping an eye on the situation. Every precaution is being taken,” Puri said, according to a CNBC translation of his remarks in Hindi.

Covid in India and Singapore

There was recently a surge in locally submitted cases in Singapore, prompting the government to tighten social restrictions again.

While a number of children in the city-state were recently infected with Covid-19, Education Minister Chan Chun Sing said on Sunday that none of them are seriously ill, but the situation is still worrying, according to the Straits Times.

Nonetheless, Singapore announced on Tuesday that children between the ages of 12 and 15 could be vaccinated.

So far, Singapore has reported more than 61,600 cases and 31 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

India is the second worst infected country in the world after the US and is facing a devastating second wave. To date, India has reported more than 25 million cases and over 287,000 deaths, but experts believe the numbers have been severely under counted.

Delhi was one of the hardest hit regions in the country, with hospitals facing shortages of hospital beds, oxygen supplies and drugs to treat Covid-19 patients.

Tremendous Bowl-winning MVP quarterback predicts Mahomes, Chiefs win

Super Bowl-winning MVP quarterback Joe Theismann predicted the Kansas City Chiefs will win Super Bowl LV against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend as millions watch the showdown between quarterbacks Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

“I think Patrick’s legs give them an edge, and Tom’s going to have to be hotter than ever before, but I’ll pick Kansas City on this one,” the former Washington quarterback told CNBC’s The News with Shepard Smith. ”

Brady will make his tenth Super Bowl appearance against last year’s Super Bowl MVP Mahomes at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Brady was the last quarterback to win two Lombardi trophies in a row. Mahomes was in kindergarten when Tom Brady won his first Super Bowl with the Patriots in 2002.

Theismann told host Shepard Smith that Super Bowl LV is one of the most significant quarterback matchups in history due to the age difference between the two quarterbacks.

“It’s a great story between the grizzled veteran who is likely to go on for at least a few more years and the young child who looks like the obvious heir,” Theismann said.

Hall of Fame sports journalist Jerry Green has covered every Super Bowl since the first in 1967. Green told The News with Shepard Smith that although he admires Brady very much, he thinks Johnny Unitas is the best there has ever been.

It will be the first Super Bowl ever hosted by a home team, but Theismann doesn’t think this will give the Bucs an advantage.

“Kansas City basically stayed home, Tampa Bay is home, so both teams have had the opportunity to control the environment they are in in hopes that no one shows up late with Covid and Covid.” Suddenly something has to change, so I don’t really see it as a big advantage at the moment, “explained Theismann.

The NFL and players have had to adapt to play amid the coronavirus pandemic. For example, both the Bucs and Chiefs have been tested twice a day instead of once since winning their conference championship games. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell offered President Joe Biden all 30 league stadiums as bulk vaccination sites.

“The NFL and our 32 member clubs are committed to ensuring that vaccines are as widely available as possible in our communities,” Goodell wrote. “To this end, each NFL team will make their stadium available to the public for mass vaccination in coordination with local, state and federal health officials.”

Goodell added that seven NFL stadiums across the country are already being used as mega vaccination sites.

Despite this unprecedented nature of the season and the Super Bowl, Theismann said he wouldn’t be surprised to see 43-year-old Brady out on the field for a few more years.

“If you have the ability to throw the ball like Tom did and the protection it gets 45 is possible,” said Theismann. “He’s not going away quietly.”
