Ford poaches high tech govt Doug Subject who helped lead Apple’s top-secret automobile mission

DETROIT – Ford Motor has hired former Tesla and Apple executive Doug Field to lead its emerging technology efforts, a key focus for the automaker under its new Ford+ turnaround plan.

Field, who led development of Tesla’s Model 3, most recently served as vice president of special projects at Apple, which reportedly included the tech giant’s Titan car project.

The hire is a major new addition for Ford, while a big hit to Apple and its secret car project, which the company has yet to confirm exists.

“I think any time you lose a well-respected, experienced executive who, as best we can tell, was really directing the automotive efforts at Apple, it’s a blow to any company,” Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, who covers the iPhone maker, said Tuesday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell.” 

Ford on Tuesday said Field will serve in the new position of chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer. He will lead Ford’s vehicle controls, enterprise connectivity, features, integration and validation, architecture and platform, driver assistance technology and digital engineering tools.

“His talent and commitment to innovation that improves customers’ lives will be invaluable as we build out our Ford+ plan to deliver awesome products, always-on customer relationships and ever-improving user experiences,” Ford CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “We are thrilled Doug chose to join Ford and help write the next amazing chapter of this great company.” 

Field, who will report to Farley, actually began his professional career at Ford in 1987, according to his LinkedIn profile. He then held positions at Johnson & Johnson, Deka Research & Development and Segway before starting at Apple in 2008. After more than five years with the tech giant, he moved to Tesla before returning to Apple in 2018.

Biden’s Electrical Automotive Plans Hinge on Having Sufficient Chargers

Startups, automakers, and other companies have been slowly building chargers for years, mostly in California and other coastal states, where most electric cars are sold. These companies use different strategies to make money and auto experts say it is not clear which one will be successful. The most station company, ChargePoint, sells chargers to individuals, workplaces, businesses, condominiums and apartment buildings, and companies with electric vehicle fleets. It charges subscription fees for software that manages the chargers. Tesla offers charging mainly to get people to buy their cars. And others make money selling electricity to drivers.

The switch to electric cars

Once the poor cousin of the hip business of building sleek electric cars, the charging industry has been swept away by its own gold rush. According to PitchBook, venture capital firms poured nearly $ 1 billion in fees last year, more than in the previous five years combined. In 2021, venture capital investments will total more than $ 550 million so far.

On Wall Street, according to Dealogic, a research firm, publicly traded-purpose businesses or SPACs have closed deals to buy eight charging companies out of 26 deals in electric vehicles and related businesses. The deals typically involve an infusion of hundreds of millions of dollars from large investors like BlackRock.

“It’s early days and people are trying to figure out what the potential is,” said Gabe Daoud Jr., managing director and analyst at Cowen, an investment bank.

These companies could benefit from the infrastructure bill, but it’s not clear how the Biden administration will distribute money for charging stations.

Another unanswered question is who will be the Exxon Mobil of the electric car age. It could be automakers.

Tesla, which makes about two-thirds of the electric cars sold in the US, has built thousands of chargers that it made available to early customers for free. The company could open its network to vehicles from other automakers by the end of the year, its CEO Elon Musk said in July.

With automotive costs surging, yours is a chief goal for thieves

You can blame the Covid pandemic for another thing: an increase in car thefts.

Vehicle thefts in the United States rose 9% year over year to 873,000, the highest number in more than a decade, according to National Insurance Crime Bureau statistics provided by CNBC’s American Greed.

The pandemic created a “perfect storm” of conditions for the increase in car thefts, said NICB President and CEO David Glawe.

“We have a lot of disenfranchised youth who are unemployed and outreach programs are being closed or restricted because of Covid,” he said. “There is frustration and anger in society. We are also seeing restrictions on public safety and the withdrawal of proactive police forces due to budget constraints.”

Vehicles are also particularly valuable these days. Due to the tight supply and strong demand after the pandemic, used car prices have increased by almost 30% compared to the previous year.

The rise in thefts started slowly and coincided with the start of the pandemic in March 2020. They accelerated until last June when the first wave of Covid lockdowns subsided and a second wave loomed. In November, monthly thefts were 18% ahead of 2019.

The biggest jump was in Chicago, where vehicle thefts rose by 134% last year, the NICB said. The Chicago police said the number of carjackings had doubled.

“This has been a year that has presented law enforcement with numerous challenges,” Chicago Police Commissioner David Brown said in a January statement announcing the numbers.

The numbers have leveled off a bit as pandemic restrictions have eased, but Chicago police data released earlier this month shows thefts are still 9% higher than a year ago.

Elsewhere, thefts rose 68% in New York City and 50% in Washington, DC, the NICB said.

Hot goods

Criminals have long understood how lucrative trading in vehicles can be. An extreme example of another type of vehicle crime in 2014 was serial fraudster and internet influencer TR Wright III, who portrayed himself as an arms dealer and an internationally mysterious man.

“All of the Instagram photos showed this person with fancy cars, guns, high-end clothing, high-end vehicles, yachts, jets traveling around the world,” said James Reed, agent for the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, opposite “American Greed.”

Wright, 36, admitted to being part of a conspiracy in which he bought a 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo with a salvage title at a bargain price of $ 76,000, deliberately ditched it, and raised nearly $ 170,000 in insurance revenue.

Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy in 2018, in a far-reaching scheme that affected not only vehicles but boats and planes as well. Wright, who is serving a five-year prison sentence, told American Greed that he made even more money than prosecutors claim.

“It depends how you do the math, but if you took a total loss, let’s say somewhere between $ 30 million and $ 40 million,” Wright said.

But also much smaller crooks can kill in other ways on the vehicle market, especially with today’s high prices. There is a free market for most cars and trucks and their parts.

While Wright bought his Lamborghini through a company he controlled, it was remarkably easy for criminals to simply steal vehicles. According to the NICB, more than 10% of the stolen vehicles in 2019 – the last year for which full figures are available – had the keys left inside.

How to thwart the thieves

Since almost all cases lead to an insured event, every policyholder suffers in the form of higher premiums. This is why the NICB urges vehicle owners to protect themselves, especially when the crooks are so active.

Here are some tips, some of which are common sense:

  • Take your keys out of the ignition lock when you park the vehicle, or if your vehicle has a remote control key, keep it with you even if you only get out of the vehicle for a short time.
  • Close your doors and windows and park in a well-lit area.
  • Do not leave valuables or other items that might attract the attention of thieves in your car. This also includes your garage door opener.
  • Consider keeping a picture of your vehicle registration on your phone instead of leaving the actual document in the glove box.
  • Think of installing a car alarm, as well as a kill switch that can immobilize a stolen vehicle.
  • Consider buying a GPS tracker that can help authorities find your vehicle.

Excessive costs, few reductions and low stock await automotive customers

Car shoppers hoping to cash in on Memorial Day weekend sales events may want to rein in their expectations.

On top of reduced inventory due to a shortage of microchips — key parts needed for today’s autos to operate — and unrelenting consumer demand pushing prices higher, there are fewer incentives being offered by manufacturers and dealers.

The average incentive is $2,957, down from $4,825 in May 2020 and $3,878 in May 2019, according to a new forecast from J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.

“People will be in for a bit of a surprise,” said Ivan Drury, senior manager of insights at Edmunds.com. “There will be little to no negotiation on price.

“We’re seeing more people pay sticker price or above.”

At the start of the pandemic more than a year ago, when dealerships and manufacturing plants were shut down, chipmakers pivoted to focusing on the consumer electronics industry — i.e., computers and gaming consoles — and there are still kinks in their ability to meet the renewed demand from automakers.

Some automakers have idled manufacturing plants or cut back production of certain models, or stopped including certain high-end packages — things like navigation systems or blind-spot detectors — in vehicles that typically would have them, Drury said. 

“The shortage is really kicking the legs out from under the industry,” Drury said.

In May, an estimated 33% of vehicles are selling within 10 days of arriving at a dealership, according to new estimates from J.D. Power and LMC Automotive. That compares to 18% selling that fast in May 2019.

Additionally, car shoppers may struggle to find the car they really want. To that point, 40% of car shoppers say they’re facing that problem, according to a recent survey from Cars.com.

“If you’re picky, this may not be the right time to buy,” Drury said. “But if you’re open-minded … you’ll be in a better position.”

Of course, it’s uncertain when the squeeze on inventory will lessen.

“By the end of year, things will start to improve,” Drury said. “But we’ll be nowhere near normal levels.”

The average price paid for a new car is close to $40,000, according to Edmunds.com. For used cars, it’s above $23,000. Some of the increase in prices are due to consumer preferences shifting over the last decade to pricier pickup trucks and SUVs and away from lower-priced sedans and small cars. Improved technology and safety features add to the price, as well.

Discounts are averaging about 7% or 8%, said Kelsey Mays, assistant managing editor for Cars.com. That compares to past years when that average was 10% to 12%.

Among the incentives being offered: The Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which starts at about $29,000, has a decent discount of around $4,000, depending on the trim level, Mays said. The Toyota Camry, with a starting price of about $25,000, may come with a $1,000 discount, depending on the specifics.

The silver lining to the higher cost for used cars is that trade-ins are worth more, as well. And while there may be little price negotiation for the car you’re buying, you may be able to get more for your trade-in to bring down the amount you have to finance.

“Potential wiggle room for consumers is going to be with their trade-in,” said Mays at Cars.com. “Consumers should leverage those elevated values and get the most they can.”

There are also other ways to bring down the cost of your purchase. Depending on your credit score, you may be able to find a 0% (or close to it) financing deal on a new car. Otherwise, the average interest rate paid on a five-year new-car loan is 4.12%, according to Bankrate. For a three-year used car loan, it’s 4.42%.

“Shop the interest rate,” Drury said. “That’s where savings can come from.”

If you’re picky, this may not be the right time to buy. But if you’re open-minded … you’ll be in a better position.

Unless paying with cash, you should get preapproved for a loan from a bank or credit union. While there’s no obligation to use the preapproval, you’ll at least be armed with a comparison when the dealership offers its loan terms.

Be aware that the longer you stretch out your loan — say, for 72 or 84 months — in an effort to afford the monthly payments, the more you’ll pay in interest (unless it’s 0%) and the greater the chance that you’ll end up trading in your car for a new one before you’ve paid it off.

And in that scenario, if the trade-in value is less than what’s owed on the loan, consumers often end up rolling that “negative equity” into the loan for their next car.

If you want a brand-new car but can’t find exactly what you want, you may want to consider leasing instead of making a purchase.

“It’s not a long-term commitment … and might be better than financing something over six years that you don’t like,” Drury said.

Odometer Rollbacks: A Exhausting-to-Spot Nuisance for Automotive Consumers

A web search for “Vehicle Mileage Correction” found a number of companies that offer rollback services. Companies, at least superficially, advise against illegal tampering, but that doesn’t mean they won’t. One’s website states: “We urge all customers who use mileage adjustment services to have a legitimate cause for concern as it is illegal to change the mileage of your car and not give this information to potential buyers.”

The kilometer adjustment costs US $ 120 at one location. The instrument cluster must be removed and sent to the supplier, which will change the reading and send it back.

The mileage can also be changed using a tool that plugs into the OBD2 connector – a connector that allows mechanics to read service codes that report faulty components.

To see how difficult it could be to cut vehicle miles, I bought a $ 120 rollback tool – the most affordable of those on eBay – to try it out.

The device was for GM vehicles, so I tested it on a 2014 Equinox. The tool is only used to change the reading on an odometer. After switching on, a screen with the label “Cluster Calibrate” is displayed.

The tool correctly read the odometer reading as 78,624 kilometers, or approximately 48,855 miles, but two attempts to reset the odometer were unsuccessful. Tampering may be relatively straightforward, but it appears to require quality equipment. After testing, we disabled and discarded the tool as recommended by a police officer.

There are ways to detect tampering with the odometer, although it is not child’s play. For example, checking the frequently touched parts of the vehicle for excessive wear can provide clues as to the actual mileage. The pedals are good indicators: be suspicious of those in a car with moderate mileage, e.g. B. 45,000, have extreme wear or, since the pedals can be changed, show no wear. Both could indicate something wrong. Also, check out the inside of the door handles, steering wheel, armrests, and anything else that is regularly touched.

Bitcoin (BTC) value falls after Tesla stops automobile purchases with crypto

GUANGZHOU, China – Hundreds of billions of dollars were wiped from the entire cryptocurrency market after Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the electric vehicle maker would stop buying cars with bitcoin.

According to Coinmarketcap.com, the value of the entire cryptocurrency market was around $ 2.43 trillion at around 6:06 a.m. Singapore time on Thursday when Musk made the announcement.

By 8:45 a.m., market cap had dropped to around $ 2.06 trillion and wiped out around $ 365.85 billion. The market has reduced some losses. Since Musk’s tweet, the cryptocurrency market had lost $ 165.75 billion in value at around 9:22 a.m. Singapore time.

In February, Tesla announced in a filing for approval that it had purchased $ 1.5 billion worth of Bitcoin and planned to accept the cryptocurrency for payments.

Citing environmental concerns Thursday, Musk said Tesla was “concerned about the rapidly increasing use of fossil fuels for bitcoin mining and transactions, particularly coal, which has the worst emissions of any fuel.”

Bitcoin is not issued by a single entity such as a central bank. Instead, it is maintained by a network of so-called “miners”. These miners use specially designed computers that use a great deal of energy to solve complex math puzzles in order to make Bitcoin transactions. Bitcoin’s energy consumption is higher than in some individual countries.

At around 9:34 a.m. Singapore time, Bitcoin fell more than 12%, falling below the $ 50,000 mark for the first time since April 24, according to CoinDesk data. Despite the recent decline, Bitcoin is still up over 400% in the past 12 months.

Other cryptocurrencies Ether and XRP were also significantly lower.

Musk was a big advocate of digital currencies like Bitcoin and Dogecoin and has helped drive prices up over the past few months.

Tesla CEO said the company will not sell Bitcoin and intends to use it for transactions “once mining moves to more sustainable energy.”

Bitcoin has piqued interest over the past year as companies like Square and Tesla announced Bitcoin purchases and large institutional investors entered the cryptocurrency space. Large investment banks like Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have also been looking for ways to give their wealthy clients exposure to Bitcoin.

What to Do If Your Automotive is Recalled

Millions of cars are recalled every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, up from around eight million by 2021. Notifying the automaker that your vehicle is one of them and has a security flaw is not only alarming, it can lead to a barrage of questions.

What do i do next? How can I take care of it? Will it cost me anything?

Even more urgent is how urgent it is to fix the problem. The answer is that while minor maintenance can easily slip without causing major problems, the safety concerns a recall applies to are not a footnote to the “Maybe Someday” section of your to-do list. Recalls vary in urgency and sometimes repairs cannot be done immediately by the dealer because spare parts are not available. It can be months before they are. But, as a recent case in South Carolina shows, procrastination can be fatal.

In January, the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord died of an accident in which the car’s airbag was deployed. When the 19th death in the United States was caused by splinters from a broken Takata airbag inflator, it was hardly unprecedented. But there was a twist this time around: Honda, which recalled the car in 2011, said it had attempted more than 100 times to reach the owner of the car via mail, phone, and through personal visits. The faulty inflators were never replaced.

The Takata recall, the largest in history, affects 100 million inflaters, including 67 million in the United States. And these recalls aren’t all a decade old. As recently as March, Ford recalled 2.6 million cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles to replace the Takata driver-side airbag components.

Measures can be taken against security threats that occur even when the vehicles are parked. In March, several Hyundai and Genesis models were recalled to correct electrical shorts that created a fire risk. In this case, the Road Safety Agency advised owners to “park their cars outside and outside of houses, other structures and other combustible materials” to prevent loss of property.

Recalls aren’t about customer complaints like air conditioning or a rusty fender. They are specifically security problems, even if the danger is sometimes not readily apparent. Fixing the problem should be done ASAP, and the automaker will pay for it.

You need to contact the owners via email. However, if you weren’t home during the pandemic, chances are you missed the notification. And if you’ve bought a used car, the recall notification may not have caught you.

You can easily check if a vehicle has been recalled by entering the 17-digit vehicle identification number (or chassis number) on the security agency’s website – nhtsa.gov/recalls. You can find the chassis number in the license plate and often on the insurance card. It can also be seen through the glass at the bottom of the driver’s side windshield.

Checking for recalls is a must, especially if you are buying a used car. This search will tell you whether the vehicle has been recalled in the last 15 calendar years and whether the problem has been resolved. The report covers major automakers, motorcycle manufacturers, and some medium / heavy truck manufacturers.

If the vehicle has not been recalled or if the defect has been rectified, the following message is displayed: 0 Unrepaired recalls related to this VIN. Recently announced callbacks may not appear due to the time it takes for the VINs to be identified. Therefore, you may have to look again.

Recalls are carried out by the car manufacturer, but can be ordered by the security agency. The process can begin when an automaker discovers a Problems with regular quality checks or defects occur through the dealer network. According to the law, if a car manufacturer learns of a security deficiency, it must notify the security authorities immediately.

The process can also start with consumer complaints filed in the agency database. These complaints will be examined and if further action is required after an analysis, an investigation will be carried out is opened. If this is a problem, a callback will be initiated. In practice, automakers usually start recalls themselves before the agency intervenes. The security agency oversees the process to ensure that customer notifications are properly issued and repairs are tracked.

The automaker can repair the defect, replace the vehicle with an identical or similar specification, or refund the full purchase price (adjusted for depreciation). If you’ve already paid for repairs that would have been made as part of the recall, the automaker will often have to reimburse you.

China Is Set to Rule Electrical Automotive Manufacturing

ZHAOQING, China – Xpeng Motors, a Chinese start-up for electric cars, recently opened a large assembly plant in southeast China and is building a suitable factory nearby. It has announced plans for a third.

Another Chinese electric car company, Nio, has opened a large factory in central China and is preparing to build a second a few kilometers away.

Zhejiang Geely, owner of Volvo, showed off a huge new electric car factory in east China last month that could rival some of the largest assembly plants in the world. Evergrande, a troubled Chinese real estate giant, has just built electric car factories in the cities of Shanghai and Guangzhou and hopes to produce nearly as many all-electric cars as all of North America by 2025.

China is building electric car factories almost as quickly as the rest of the world put together. Chinese manufacturers are using the billions they have raised from international investors and personable local executives to bring established automakers to market.

Success is far from assured. Players include startups, electronics manufacturers, and other newbies to the auto industry. They bet that drivers in China and beyond will be willing to spend $ 40,000 or more on brands they have never heard of.

Chinese automakers acknowledge that the experience brings some advantages to the mainstream auto companies. But they insist that their plans work.

“We have the will and we have the patience,” said He Xiaopeng, chairman and general manager of Xpeng, in an interview. “I think we will find it very challenging, but we also have to move forward.”

The Chinese industry is on the move. China will produce over eight million electric cars a year by 2028, estimates LMC Automotive, a global data company, compared to a million last year. Europe is well on the way to producing 5.7 million fully electric cars by then.

General Motors and other North American automakers have plans to catch up. In April, President Biden urged the United States to step up its electric vehicle efforts. During a virtual visit to an electric bus factory in South Carolina, he warned: “At the moment we are running far after China.”

North American automakers are well on their way to building just 1.4 million electric cars a year by 2028, compared to 410,000 last year, according to LMC.

Global auto companies are helping China’s leadership. Volkswagen started recently Third Chinese electric car factory built.

Thanks to the nationwide rollout of over 800,000 public charging stations supported by the government, China already has the infrastructure for electric cars. That’s almost twice as much as the rest of the world, although US drivers who tend to live in single-family homes find it easier to hook up their cars at home.

With a slower deployment of charging stations outside of China, automakers elsewhere plan to continue building some plug-in hybrids with small gasoline engines for a few more years. However, the market for fully electric cars is already larger than for plug-in hybrids, and the lead of electric cars is growing rapidly. Automakers like GM plan to completely eliminate gasoline and diesel engines over the next 15 years.

Name recognition will be a major challenge for the new Chinese cars. The brands are mostly unknown even to Chinese drivers. On streets full of Buicks, Volkswagens and Mercedes-Benzes, it was difficult for them to stand out.

E-commerce company Alibaba and two state-backed companies have set up a joint venture for electric cars called IM Motors, which is scheduled to begin delivering cars early next year.

Evergrande plans to manufacture and sell one million all-electric cars annually by 2025. So far none have been sold.

Geely, an industry veteran with recognized brands in China, has named his electrical brand Zeekr, which rhymes with “seeker”. The delivery of the cars is planned for October.

The Zeekr will be manufactured in a new electric car factory near Ningbo on China’s east coast. The factory is a cavernous space with miles of white conveyor belts and rows of cream-colored 15-foot robots made by ABB of Sweden. It has an initial capacity of 300,000 cars per year, is larger than most Detroit auto plants, and has space for expansion.

“The most important thing is that China has the market,” said Zhao Chunlin, general manager of the factory.

Mr. He named Xpeng, pronounced “X-Pung”, after himself. Xpeng’s niche feature is a cooing Siri-like voice assistant that controls the car’s internet services like directions and music, as well as computer-aided driving on the highway. Xpeng plans to produce 300,000 cars a year by 2024. it sold less than a tenth as many last year.

Mr. He made his first fortune developing a cell phone browser company, UCWeb. He sold it to Alibaba in 2014 and became president of Alibaba’s Mobile Business Services division. That same year, he helped two former Guangzhou Auto State executives set up Xpeng.

Three years later, Mr. He took direct control of Xpeng and left Alibaba, which also acquired a small stake in the automaker. Mr. He said his second child had been born and that he wanted to tell his son that he ran a car company. Mr. He holds 23 percent of Xpeng’s shares, while Alibaba holds 12 percent.

Chinese government officials helped with this. A state-owned company in Zhaoqing, a 1,000-year-old jade carving town near Guangzhou, donated $ 233 million to Xpeng in 2017 to build its first factory with an annual capacity of around 100,000 cars. The city has since subsidized the company’s interest payments according to Xpeng’s regulatory filings.

The City of Wuhan helped Xpeng buy land and borrow money for a new plant at low interest rates. The Guangzhou government also helped Xpeng build its factory in that city, said Brian Gu, vice chairman and president of Xpeng.

Last year, after weathering the pandemic, Xpeng benefited from Wall Street, where Tesla’s rise sparked investor appetites for the industry. The Chinese company raised $ 5 billion through an initial public offering and subsequent share sales. It spends part of the money on new factories and part on research and development, especially on autonomous driving.

Xpeng’s deep pockets are visible in costly automation in the Zhaoqing factory. Robots lift 44-pound car roofs made from dark-tinted glass, apply aerospace adhesive, and press into place. Waist-high robots slide across the gray concrete floor and carry instrument panels as they play an instrumental version of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”. (The robots were programmed that way, company officials explained.)

The construction of the factory took only 15 months, which was considerably faster than the assembly plants in the west. Yan Hui, the general manager of the plant’s final assembly area, said decisions were made faster than at the German auto parts maker where he used to work.

“Every design change took a long time – characters, characters, even characters in German,” he said. “But at Xpeng, we can just make the change.”

Although many of the electric car brands are new to China, their owners already have ambitions abroad. Xpeng starts exporting cars to Europe, starting with Norway. Lobbyists urge updates to federal automobile security guidelines after Tesla crashes

Two major US auto industry lobby groups are pushing for updates to federal vehicle safety regulations following major accidents involving Tesla vehicles.

During a Senate subcommittee hearing Tuesday, executives from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation and the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association said the U.S. needed better standards and protocols to sell automated driving systems like Tesla’s under the Autopilot and Full Self-Driving brand names to address.

Tesla has been critical of the development, testing, and marketing of these systems, including the failure to prevent drivers from misusing or overestimating the capabilities of the autopilot and FSD.

There are questions about whether autopilot or FSD were in any way to blame for the recent Tesla accidents that the National Transportation Safety Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are investigating. To date, the NHTSA has initiated around 28 investigations into Tesla vehicle accidents, of which around 24 are active. NTSB has launched 8 such investigations.

Automated driving systems, also known as driver assistance systems, can control some functions of a vehicle. However, automakers continue to require drivers to remain alert and drive even when the systems are in use.

In general, driver assistance is based on a mixture of cameras and sensors. Some automakers use advanced maps along with sensors to restrict the use of their systems to specific streets.

Despite their commercial availability, the United States does not regulate precise federal regulations or performance standards for automated driving systems.

“The US is at risk of losing our competitive advantage because of a lack of clear national guidelines,” said Ann Wilson, senior vice president of government affairs for the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, during the hearing on Tuesday. She later added, “NHTSA can and should do more.”

John Bozzella, CEO of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, said a “more strategic and robust approach” is needed for the government’s New Car Assessment program. He also said any modernization of the government’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), which set requirements for the design, construction, performance and durability of vehicles, should also be analyzed in relation to highly automated and autonomous vehicles.

“We need a national strategy, a framework that accommodates a new kind of regulation,” he said.

The comments came Tuesday afternoon during a Senate Land Transport, Shipping, Freight and Ports subcommittee on how automotive innovations will affect the future of vehicle safety, mobility and technology in a global economy.

It came a day after three Democratic U.S. Senators on Monday introduced laws mandating performance standards for driver monitoring systems and requiring those systems to be installed in new vehicles.

Tesla is not a member of the Alliance for Automotive Innovation or the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association. The company did not respond to a comment.

Driver monitoring

Prior to the hearing, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents automotive suppliers and manufacturers who produce nearly 99% of new cars and light trucks sold in the US, published several safety principles related to driver monitoring in vehicles with driver assistance systems such as Tesla Autopilot.

Among other things, the guidelines call on car manufacturers to introduce camera-based driver monitoring systems for vehicles with automated driving or driver assistance systems. These are intended to recognize whether the drivers are attentive and ready to drive manually in situations in which the automated program is insufficient.

General Motors, Subaru, and BMW already have camera-based driver monitoring systems, and others like Ford Motor have announced similar plans. Tesla vehicles have cabin cameras, but according to the company’s operating instructions, they are not used for driver monitoring. With Tesla’s systems, the driver has to “check in” by touching the steering wheel.

“This issue that we are now debating – and I agree with you – is a consumer awareness and confidence issue. Tesla research

Last week consumer reports found that a 2020 Tesla Model Y “can easily get the car to drive even if no one is in the driver’s seat.”

Extensive investigations have not been completed, and authorities have not disclosed whether the autopilot or Tesla’s premium automatic driving system FSD was in use before or at the time of the collision. Tesla advises in its owner’s manual that the autopilot and FSD require active monitoring.

Chinese language electrical automotive makers goal Europe as competitors heats up

SHANGHAI – After the final year of growth in the world’s largest auto market, China’s electric car startups are ramping up their plans to take over Europe.

The Chinese authorities have only begun lifting restrictions on full foreign ownership of local automobile production in the last few years. More than a decade ago, Beijing spent billions of dollars developing its own electric vehicles.

This has helped local players get a head start in making battery powered cars that they are now looking to sell overseas. Goldman Sachs analysts predict that in four years’ time, due to new government guidelines, electric cars will have a larger share of auto sales in Europe and the US than in China, despite the fact that this is the largest market.

The US-listed company Nio has announced that it will enter Europe in the second half of the year. And on Monday, co-founder and president Lihong Qin said the company expected to make an official announcement of such an expansion within a month.

He did not name a specific country and stated that after Europe, Nio still intended to enter the US market.

Amid tensions with the US and attempts to secure an investment deal with Europe, China exported 63,500 all-battery electric vehicles in the first eleven months of last year. This comes from a January report by the China Chamber of Commerce for the Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products. While Saudi Arabia and Egypt were the top travel destinations for Chinese cars overall last year, the report saw significant growth in vehicle exports to the UK, Belgium and Germany.

The US-listed company Xpeng is already testing the waters in Norway, where the start-up delivered 100 units of its G3 electric SUV in December.

Another Chinese electric car startup, Aiways, said it exported more than 1,000 vehicles to Israel and Europe in the first three months of this year.

“It’s no secret that most Chinese EV startups have global ambitions,” said Tu Le, founder of Beijing-based consulting firm Sino Auto Insights. “This will continue as these companies pursue growth and value and see opportunities because there are no viable electric vehicle products in the region.”

He said that with enough local research, some of the Chinese companies in Europe could thrive.

However, the growth in Chinese electric car sales to Europe remains a tiny part of the market.

China accounted for less than 2% of the EU’s car imports in 2019, and the value of 865 million euros means a year-on-year growth of 79%, according to the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers.

In contrast, EU-owned automakers produced nearly 6 million passenger cars in China in 2018, accounting for nearly a quarter of total Chinese automobile production, the association said.

Increasing competition in China

The overseas Chinese startup company comes in when the home market warms up. Nios Qin said the entry of tech companies like Apple and Huawei into the industry creates fierce competition for the automaker.

Tesla is the market leader in the automotive sector and is expanding local production. According to the China Passenger Car Association, the Model 3 was the top-selling electric car in China last year.

With the exception of two mini-electric cars, the association said the next best vehicle in this category would be Aion’s S model, a new energy brand that was spun off from Chinese state-owned automaker GAC. A more expensive model from Nio took ninth place, while Xpeng did not make the top ten list.

“Chinese consumers are increasingly understanding new energy vehicles,” said Qiu Liangping, Aion’s planning director, according to a CNBC translation of his Mandarin-language remarks. In addition to making battery charging easier, Chinese buyers are looking for a better driving experience than fossil-fuel cars with internet-enabled features.

The brand also has its eye on the international market, said Qiu. Prior to the spin-off, Aion and GAC’s Trumpchi brand were already selling cars in Israel, the Middle East and South America.

As the automotive industry continues to move into the electrical space, traditional US and German auto companies are launching their own electric vehicles – many in the Chinese market first.

For example, General Motors’ Cadillac brand presented its Lyriq electric car at the Shanghai Auto Show. According to the company, pre-orders in China will start later this year.

Ford also used the show to unveil its locally made version of the Mustang Mach-e electric car, as well as an Evos SUV developed largely in China that will only be available in the country.
