Misinformation on social media is hindering Papua New Guinea’s vaccination efforts.

According to the PNG’s Covid-19 Response Controller, many people are reluctant to vaccinate as false information about the vaccines is spread even as coronavirus cases increase.

The country reported 1,730 cases and 12 deaths between March 29 and April 4, according to a joint report from the World Health Organization and the PNG’s national ministry of health.

Cases of infection rose again in February, and PNG has reported 7,839 cases so far, data from Johns Hopkins University showed. However, there is consensus that the actual number is much higher, which is masked by low testing capacity and other logistical difficulties.

“We have been lulled into a kind of complacency and false sense of security that we have overcome over this first wave that we feared,” David Manning, PNG’s Covid-19 National Pandemic Response Controller, told CNBC’s Will Koulouris .

Facebook launched a public awareness campaign in PNG this week to help users identify and combat health misinformation. It runs for five weeks and contains graphics and videos in several languages.

“For this campaign, we will continue to focus our efforts on addressing misinformation related to Covid-19 and vaccines to ensure Papuan New Guineans are able to verify their visibility to official public health resources,” said Mia Garlick , Facebook’s director of public order in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands said in a statement on Wednesday.

Stressed health infrastructure

The outbreak puts undue strain on PNG’s already poor health infrastructure.

Trump marketing campaign chief Paul Manafort cannot be prosecuted in New York

Ray McGuire raises massive cash for marketing campaign

Israeli officials have boasted that the country vaccinated more people in the first nine days of its vaccination campaign than it has had Covid-19 infections since the pandemic began.

Israel has an early advantage, said Dr. Itamar Grotto, Deputy Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Health and one of those responsible for the prosecution. “We have a national vaccination registry that was set up a few years ago. The whole country is in one database,” he said in an exclusive interview with CNBC.

Registration was started to ensure that children get all of their recordings. This infrastructure enabled Israel to be better prepared for this outbreak than many other countries fighting the virus. Israel had a terrifying dry run for Covid-19 when it was hit by a wild-type poliovirus outbreak in 2013.

The country brought this disease under control with an intensive vaccination campaign that paved the way for today’s vaccine database.

Israel’s medical infrastructure offers several other advantages, he said:

  • Medical care in Israel is largely socialized.
  • Israel only has four health organizations serving citizens across the country while many other nations have more competition in the system.
  • These HMOs are all linked to the country’s national health service, which keeps records of every Israeli citizen.
  • The whole system will be digitized under a single national system.

Before packages containing the Pfizer BioNTech vaccine arrived in Israel on December 9, a government-appointed panel began clarifying who would get the shots in the first wave.

At the same time, the Ministry of Health began setting up a communication and distribution system so that the vials of the vaccine could arrive immediately, he said.

Patients in the database of the first group who received the vaccine were given an appointment via email, text, or an online registration form with a date and time period to receive their shot. Regular clinics, community centers, hospitals and some sports stadiums have been converted into vaccination centers and staffed with previously trained health care workers awaiting action, he said.

Because the vaccine cannot be frozen after thawing, Israel is encouraging vaccination site managers to use any dose.

According to Grotto, there is a ready list of people who can intervene at short notice if other people fail to show up at the end of the day. Officials at distribution centers also divide the vials into smaller packages suitable for each center. This is another attempt at avoiding waste.

However, the challenges facing Israel are far from over. Health officials recently confirmed that nearly 500 doses were wasted in the south of the country because health workers failed to get enough people ready to come to vaccination centers.

Israel expects more deliveries from Pfizer. Business has also been made with Moderna and AstraZeneca, but these recordings have not yet been delivered. But they are expected soon. Israel is also working on its own vaccine, but there is no word on when it will be ready.

The $ 900 billion pandemic relief package that President Trump was late in signing Sunday night gained momentum as an issue in the Georgia Senate runoff election on Monday.

Mr Perdue has run ads attacking Mr Ossoff for calling the $ 600 relief checks a “joke” when the President also called them far too small. Mr Ossoff wrote on Twitter that Mr Perdue did not even endorse a first round of direct payments last spring.

With election day in Georgia a little over a week away, Mr. Trump’s initial refusal to sign the stimulus package had put Ms. Loeffler and Mr. Perdue in a delicate position. Both had supported the measure, which was passed with a direct payment of $ 600, but both are strong supporters of Mr. Trump and risked angering him if they publicly broke with him about the need to sign the bill.

“The president continues to put both incumbent Republican senators in difficult places during a highly competitive Senate runoff,” said Bill Crane, a longtime Georgia political agent and analyst who worked for candidates in both parties.

Despite the confusion, the president tweeted Sunday that he would make a final campaign appearance on behalf of the two senators in Dalton, Georgia, a carpet-making center in the north. If both Mr Ossoff and Mr Warnock win, there will be a 50-50 split, with control of the chamber shifting to the Democrats as Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris is able to break ties.

The fate of the two Senators in the unusual double runoff election could be attributed to turnout in Dalton and the rest of northwest Georgia, a conservative area where Mr Trump received 70 percent or more of the vote in most counties. His decision to visit the region where he remains popular appeared to be aimed at last-minute motivation among Republican voters.

The election appeared to be aimed at a record turnout in a runoff election. 2.1 million Georgians had already cast ballots either in places with early voting or by postal vote. The largest voter turnout so far has been in the democratic areas around Atlanta.

Mr Crane said he saw benefits for the Democrats in the early voting, electoral enthusiasm and money. “Democrats kill postal votes,” said Crane, finding, according to an analysis of the Atlanta Journal’s constitution, that 76,000 new voters had registered since the November election.

Biden Jr. – will deter voters in their party from voting to decide for the runoff election in the Senate. Mr Crane said the message from far-right commentators on electoral fraud had lasted in the state and some Georgians were confused about whether their votes would count. “Georgia is still at odds over whether we should vote at all,” he said.

With the early polls going through December, Mr Warnock and Mr Ossoff’s campaigns on Monday focused on encouraging voters to vote. Several rappers performed at their drive-in event in the parking lot of a Baptist church, including Shelley FKA DRAM, JID, Tokyo Jetz and BRS Kash.

Mr. Ossoff, who runs a documentary production company, and Mr. Warnock, the pastor of a historic church in Atlanta, encouraged their supporters to go to early voting venues or drop their ballots in. “The whole country is watching voters in Georgia to see what we will do at this historic moment,” Ossoff said.

Both Mr Ossoff and Mr Warnock – as well as Democrats on Capitol Hill – viewed the economic reviews as a profitable problem and had used both the lower payments and the president’s opposition to the stimulus package to increase their chances in Georgia. On Monday, hours before the House of Representatives decided to move ahead with the $ 2,000 stimulus checks requested by Mr. Trump, Ossoff tweeted, “@Perduesenate, when are you going to sign $ 2,000 aid checks for Georgians?”
