Fauci blasts ‘preposterous’ Covid conspiracies, accuses his critics of ‘assaults on science’

A defiant Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday lashed out at critics calling for his ouster, blasting their “preposterous” and “painfully ridiculous” attacks and defending his record as a leading official battling the coronavirus pandemic.

Such “attacks on me are, quite frankly, attacks on science,” Fauci said in an interview with NBC News’ Chuck Todd. “People want to fire me or put me in jail for what I’ve done — namely, follow the science.”

Fauci, the White House’s chief medical advisor, pulled few punches as he directly rebutted critics who have attacked his prior remarks on the origins of the virus and on wearing masks to prevent transmission, along with a raft of conspiracy theories.

“If you go through each and every one of them, you can explain and debunk it immediately,” Fauci said. “I mean, every single one.”

Fauci also flatly dismissed a conspiracy theory about him and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg that has been pushed by Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee.

Zuckerberg emailed Fauci early on in the pandemic, inviting him to a Q&A video on the platform and outlining some ideas where the social media giant could work with the U.S. government on the Covid response. Blackburn claimed the emails between the two men showed that Fauci was trying to create a narrative “so that you would only know what they wanted you to know.”

Fauci has come under fire in recent days following the release of a trove of his emails obtained by BuzzFeed News and other news outlets through the Freedom of Information Act.

“I don’t want to be pejorative of a United States senator, but I have no idea what she’s talking about,” Fauci said after listening to the senator’s claims.

Fauci, the 80-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, maintained that his views on the origins of the coronavirus have not changed, even as the theory of a lab-leak pandemic has recently become more mainstream.

Saying that a natural-origin scenario is more likely “doesn’t mean there is a closed mind to it being a leak,” Fauci said, “even though many people feel, myself included, that still the most likely origin is a natural one.”

“I haven’t changed my mind,” Fauci said.

“You want to keep an open mind. It’s a possibility. I believe it’s a highly unlikely possibility, and I believe that the most important one, that you look at what scientists feel, is very likely that it was a natural origin,” Fauci said.

He said he’s “very much in favor” of further investigation into Covid’s origins.

Fauci has been a target for criticism in mostly Republican circles for much of the pandemic, including by former President Donald Trump, who suggested he would have fired Fauci if he won re-election.

The release of more than 3,200 pages of his emails from the first half of 2020 has given rise to new waves of attacks from conservatives.

Fauci in Wednesday’s interview seemed at times to be exasperated by the torrent of criticism. “Lately everything I say gets taken out of context — not by you, but by others,” he told NBC’s Todd.

The points are “just painfully ridiculous,” he said. “I could go the next half an hour going through each and every point that they made.”

He spoke at length about why government recommendations on mask-wearing changed over time, noting that he is “picked as the villain” on the issue despite other officials sharing his views at the time.

At the beginning, Fauci said, there was believed to be a shortage of masks, there was little available evidence that masks worked outside of a hospital setting, and the asymptomatic spread of the virus was not fully known.

As those three factors changed, so too did the guidance, he said. “When those data change, when you get more information, it’s essential that you change your position because you have got to be guided by the science and the current data.”

“People want to fire me or put me in jail for what I’ve done — namely, follow the science,” he said.

“It’s preposterous, Chuck. Totally preposterous.”

Asked about the impact of the politically charged attacks on public health officials over the past year, Fauci said it’s “very dangerous.”

“A lot of what you’re seeing as attacks on me, quite frankly, are attacks on science, because all of the things that I have spoken about, consistently from the very beginning, have been fundamentally based on science,” he said.

“Sometimes those things were inconvenient truths for people, and there was pushback against me. So if you are trying to, you know, get at me as a public health official and a scientist, you are really attacking not only Anthony Fauci, you are attacking science,” he said. “And anybody that looks at what is going on clearly sees that.”

Dubai Airports boss blasts UK journey ban as visitors slumps close to 70%

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Dubai Airports General Manager has made a decision by the UK authorities to keep the UAE on their “red” list for international travel as new data from the group shows that passenger traffic through the airport has dropped at 67, The first quarter fell 8%.

“I think the approach is wrong,” Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths told Dubai Eye Radio on Thursday, expressing frustration with the rule prohibiting air travel or costly quarantine for thousands of Britons in the Emirates upon arrival forces who want to go home.

UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that given its status as an international transport hub, the UAE could stay on the list despite falling cases and the second fastest vaccination rate in the world.

“I can’t be too honest with you about my thoughts on these comments,” Griffiths said when asked to respond. “We have made very strong claims to the UK government about the credibility of the numbers here and the way we deal with everything.”

Griffiths called for “a far more proactive relationship” to address confusion over the verdict as public frustration mounts. The UAE remains on the United Kingdom’s Red List, although Abu Dhabi has the United Kingdom on its own “green” list of travel destinations.

“There are countries on the green list (UK) that we believe have not taken the care and the number of measures that we have taken here in Dubai to keep everyone safe,” Griffiths said. “Getting back to life as we once knew it is just not practical.”

The UK Foreign Office and Transport Department spokespersons were not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC. Last week Shapps said, “We are not restricting the UAE because of the coronavirus levels in the UAE. The problem is the transit problem.”

The UK Foreign Office is currently advising against “all but essential travel throughout the United Arab Emirates, based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.”

The United Arab Emirates has delivered more than 9.9 million vaccine doses from its population of around 10 million people, just behind Israel in the global vaccination race. Dubai residents can choose between the China-made Sinopharm vaccine, the UK-developed AstraZeneca, the America-made Pfizer Stuff, or the Russian Sputnik V, while Abu Dhabi residents could only access Sinopharm until Pfizer last week at Emirate of the capital was introduced.

Some in the medical community have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the Sinopharm shot due to conflicting numbers from interim studies and a lack of published data on the Phase 3 trials. It has not yet been approved by the World Health Organization.

Economic and personal costs

The UK list, which will be reviewed in the coming weeks, lists 40 high-risk countries considered too dangerous to travel, including India, which is in a national crisis due to rising infection rates and rising death tolls.

The ban also had real ramifications for Dubai Airports, which call London a “key city” for passenger traffic at Dubai Airport. Before the pandemic, more than 6 million people would fly between the two cities in a single year, Griffiths said.

“It is almost unthinkable not to have a solid 28-a-day flight bridge between here and the UK,” said Griffiths. “The irony, of course, is that you can fly to Scotland, but not England.”

“It is obviously something that everyone here in Dubai is trying very hard to resolve very quickly.”

The ruling also affects many of the roughly 120,000 British nationals living and working in the United Arab Emirates and their family members who have expressed confusion and anger, particularly over the hotel quarantine requirement which is costing a hefty £ 1,750 (US $ 2,428) per person Person.

Blasts Hit Army Barracks in Equatorial Guinea, With Many Feared Useless

A series of explosions rocked the city of Bata in the central African nation of Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, killing at least 20 people.

Reuters news agency quoted a local television broadcaster, TVGE, as saying that at least 20 people had been killed. A local news agency, TVGE, said hospitals reported up to 400 injuries.

The cause of the explosions, which were reported to have occurred near a military barracks in the west coast oil producing nation, was not immediately apparent.

The country’s Ministry of Health and Welfare declared a health emergency and said many were missing under the rubble. The video shows scenes of people digging for victims while thick smoke billowed across the rubble-strewn landscape. Others fled through the streets, some with suitcases and children in hand, under a dark sky.

The ministry said rescue workers took the injured to at least three hospitals in the city. Officials appealed for blood donations. Pickups were loaded with survivors, reported Reuters, and drove in front of a hospital – where some saw victims lying on the ground.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit blasts satellites into house from 747

Richard Branson’s Virgin Orbit with a missile under the wing of a modified Boeing 747 aircraft launches July 10, 2019 in Mojave, California, in a major drop test of its high altitude satellite launch system.

Virgin Orbit, the rocket company founded by billionaire Richard Branson, successfully launched its first satellites with its novel air launch system.

The California-based company said 10 mini-satellites had been launched into space by the same rocket launched from the wing of an old Boeing 747 jumbo jet as it flew over the Pacific.

The jet, nicknamed Cosmic Girl, took off from Mojave Air and Space Port at around 10:50 a.m. PST on Sunday. Almost 60 minutes later, the LauncherOne missile dropped it approximately 50 miles south of the Channel Islands in California at an altitude of 35,000 feet.

When released, the rocket engine ignited and launched LauncherOne into space. About two hours later, 10 shoe box-sized satellites developed by universities and selected by NASA were deployed at an altitude of 500 km. The satellites are used for space exploration purposes.

“A new gateway to space has just been opened,” said Dan Hart, CEO of Virgin Orbit, in a statement. “That LauncherOne successfully entered orbit today is testament to the talent, precision, drive and ingenuity of this team.”

The successful launch came after Virgin Orbit attempted to launch a rocket in May last year. The company diagnosed the failure of a high pressure fuel line in the engine, which shut down the rocket shortly after launch.

“Virgin Orbit achieved what many thought was impossible. It was so inspiring to see our specially customized Virgin Atlantic 747, Cosmic Girl, launch the LauncherOne rocket into orbit,” Branson said in a statement.

“This great flight is the culmination of many years of hard work and will also unleash a whole new generation of innovators on their way into orbit.”

Thanks to Virgin Orbit’s launch technology, the company can theoretically launch rockets from almost anywhere on earth at short notice. There are plans to launch missile-bearing 747s from Cornwall, England, for example.

Branson hopes to take advantage of the growing demand for small, relatively cheap satellites. He’s not the only billionaire involved in the space race. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Tesla’s Elon Musk are also building spaceships to capitalize on the fast-growing industry.

Virgin Orbit describes itself as a “dedicated launch service for commercial and government-built small satellites”.

The company is planning the official transition to commercial service for its next mission, adding that it has already booked later launches from clients such as the US Space Force and the UK Royal Air Force, as well as companies like Swarm Technologies, Italy’s SITAEL. and Denmark’s GomSpace.

Virgin Orbit is a spin-off from Branson’s space tourism company Virgin Galactic. Virgin Orbit is a completely separate company and is privately owned by Branson’s multinational conglomerate Virgin Group.

The speculation about how much Virgin Orbit has invested so far has varied widely. Estimates range from $ 400 million to $ 500 million and even over $ 700 million.

In an interview with CNBC in October, Hart declined to comment on how much Virgin Orbit has spent to date, but said it was “discussions” about further investments, with the company about $ 150 million in new Strive for capital.

Investors include Branson’s Virgin Group and Mubadala Investment Company – the United Arab Emirates’ sovereign wealth fund, which also has a significant stake in Virgin Galactic.

Ken Langone blasts Trump, Capitol rioters, vows to help Joe Biden

Republican businessman Ken Langone on Wednesday blew up the Capitol Hill riot last week and charged CNBC with feeling “betrayed” by the actions of President Donald Trump that led to the deadly events.

“I think the biggest mistake anyone is going to make is trying to rationalize what happened last week, what the president did and what that crowd did,” Langone told Squawk Box. “There shouldn’t be any mitigation at all. It was horrible. It was wrong. I’m shocked.”

Trump’s supporters overtook the U.S. Capitol exactly a week ago to prevent Congress from completing President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the electoral college. Trump’s incendiary rhetoric and repeated lies about widespread fraud in the November elections helped anger his supporters, and during a speech in Washington, the president encouraged supporters gathered in the city to march to the Capitol.

“I feel cheated,” said Langone, who has been very supportive of Trump’s economic policies over the years and at times also criticized the president, for example for his reaction to the deadly rally by white nationalists in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.

“Last Wednesday was a shame,” added Langone, the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot, who has donated to Republicans over the years. “It should never have happened in this country. If it doesn’t break the heart of every American, something is wrong. It sure breaks my heart. I didn’t sign up for it.”

Langone, who is the chairman of the board of directors of NYU Langone Medical Center, called on Americans to rally behind Biden and give up bias. “If there is a time in history when all Americans must be patriots, it is this time,” he said.

“I will do everything I can from day one to make sure I do my part in making Joe Biden the most successful president in this country’s history,” added Langone. “There is a selfish reason for this, we have very serious major problems to solve in America,” such as the coronavirus pandemic and public education.

Langone’s comments come as the House of Representatives prepares to indict Trump again, this time for the second time for his role in inciting the Capitol uprising. The democratically led effort was supported by a number of GOP members, including Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming. She is the third-placed Republican in the house.

“I don’t care,” Langone said, if Trump is charged. “There is only one thing I care about: Joe Biden will be sworn in as president on January 20th.”

Langone was asked specifically about Republican Congressmen who voted against Biden’s victory, even after the deadly uprising. “I honestly don’t know what the hell they were thinking. … What kind of grandstand game was that?” “”

“There will be a lot of time and I am sure there will be a lot of energy going into what they have to do, whether it is Trump, these senators or whatever,” added Langone. “At the end of the day, thank God, we are a democracy and the voters will have the last word.”

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani blasts investigators as federal probe heats up

President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Rudy Giuliani, protested against the prosecutors investigating him on Tuesday, proposing to act as a “secret police” and serve the political interests of President-elect Joe Biden.

Giuliani’s Twitter rant against the Justice Department came a day after NBC News reported that New York prosecutors are seeking permission from senior DOJ officials to request a search warrant from a judge for Giuliani’s electronic communications.

On the same day, judges at the US District Court in Manhattan officially appointed Audrey Strauss as the chief federal prosecutor’s office in the southern borough of New York, effective January 16.

Strauss, who oversees the Giuliani investigation, has been serving as acting U.S. attorney for the SDNY since last summer when her predecessor Geoffrey Berman was evicted.

Sources told NBC that the SDNY’s investigation into Giuliani was “very active”.

“I am proud to be number one on the Biden Vindictive government list,” Giuliani wrote in a tweet.

“Sounds like the anti-Trumpers of the DOJ can’t wait for Biden to make the DOJ the GOVERNMENT secret police, like they’re under Obama,” he added.

“You want to confiscate my e-mails. No reason. No wrongdoing. Attorney-client privilege.?”

A representative from Biden did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It is not known exactly why SDNY prosecutors are investigating Giuliani, who is currently leading Trump’s extremely far-reaching efforts to reverse the Biden Electoral College victory.

Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, was previously a US attorney for the SDNY and had also served as the DOJ’s chief officer.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that SDNY prosecutors were reviewing Giuliani’s bank records in connection with an investigation into his business in Ukraine.

Two of Giuliani’s former employees, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, who were involved in its dealings in Ukraine, were arrested in October 2019 on charges of campaign funding fraud filed by the SDNY.

Giuliani, as Trump’s attorney, has been trying to gather harmful information about Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden in connection with Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine for at least last year.

Giuliani’s efforts were widely viewed as an attempt to harm Biden’s then candidacy for president in early 2019.

But those efforts failed spectacularly in the summer of 2019 when Trump personally pressured the Ukrainian president to announce an investigation into the Bidens.

At the time, Trump withheld the military aid appropriated by Congress to Ukraine, which was embroiled in a dispute over the territory with its neighbor Russia.

Trump was charged by the House of Representatives for his actions. The Senate later acquitted him after a trial earlier this year.

Trump and his company are under investigation by the Manhattan Attorney’s Office, which is a government agency.

The DA office has an arrest warrant that allows him to obtain Trump’s tax records and other financial documents from his long-time accounting firm.

The President has asked the US Supreme Court to block this subpoena for the second time.

The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that Trump did not have a full right as president to avoid his financial records from being subpoenaed by prosecutors.
