U.S. life expectancy dropped by 1.5 years in 2020, greatest drop since WWII

The Covid-19 pandemic cut average life expectancy in the United States by about a year and a half last year, which is the largest decline in a year since World War II, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to the report released Wednesday by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics, Americans are now expected to live an average of 77.3 years, compared with 78.8 years in 2019. Hispanics saw the sharpest decline in life expectancy last year, followed by black Americans.

“The decline in life expectancy between 2019 and 2020 is primarily due to deaths from the pandemic,” the report said. Covid deaths accounted for nearly 75% of the decline. More than 609,000 Americans have died in the pandemic to date, with around 375,000 of those people dying last year, according to the CDC.

About 11% of the decrease is due to an increase in deaths from accidents or accidental injuries. Drug overdose deaths, which increased by 30% during the pandemic, accounted for about a third of accidental injuries last year.

The life expectancy of American men decreased 1.8 years from 2019 to 2020, while the life expectancy of American women decreased 1.2 years from 2019.

Hispanic Americans typically have longer life expectancies than non-Hispanic blacks or whites, but according to the report, Hispanic life expectancy declined more than any other ethnic group in the past year. The life expectancy of all Hispanics decreased by three years, from 81.8 years in 2019 to 78.8 years in 2020. Hispanic men suffered a decrease of 3.7 years in 2020.

“Covid-19 was responsible for 90% of the decline in life expectancy in the Hispanic population,” the report said.

The reduction in the life expectancy gap between white and Hispanic populations “is a clear indicator of the deterioration in the health and mortality results of a population that, paradoxically, before the Covid-19 pandemic was able to defy the expectations of its disadvantaged socio-economic profile “says the report.

Black Americans experienced the second largest decline in life expectancy, falling nearly 3 years from 74.7 years in 2019 to 71.8 years in 2020, its lowest level since 2000, the report said. Covid-19 was responsible for 59% of the decline in life expectancy among blacks.

Among white Americans, life expectancy fell 1.2 years in 2020, from 78.8 years in 2020 to 77.6 years, its lowest level since 2002. Covid-19 accounted for 68% of the decline in life expectancy among whites last year responsible.

Covid-19 was the third leading cause of death last year, and “the overall death rate was highest among non-Hispanic blacks and non-Hispanic Native American or Alaskan people,” the CDC said in its preliminary mortality report in April.

The life expectancy of black Americans has consistently lagged whites, but the last time the life expectancy gap between blacks and whites was this large was in 1999, according to the report.

Other factors that contributed to the decline in life expectancy in 2020 are homicides, which accounted for 3% of the decline, and diabetes and chronic liver disease, which accounted for 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively.

How Gojek and Tokopedia teamed up in Indonesia’s largest merger

The combined company will contribute 2% to Indonesia’s GDP through its various business units, including a powerful super app, according to the company. And that is just the beginning.

“Hopefully one day we’ll add 5 to 10%,” Tanuwijaya, co-founder and CEO of Tokopedia, told CNBC Make It.

But maybe you have never heard of it. What exactly is GoTo and how did it get so big?

Founding of Indonesia’s largest technology company

GoTo Group is an Indonesian tech giant founded in May 2021 through a blockbuster merger between two of the country’s largest startups: Gojek and Tokopedia.

Tokopedia was founded one year apart in the capital Jakarta and started as an e-commerce marketplace in 2009 to connect small traders with buyers, while Gojek was launched in 2010 as a ride-hailing platform for motorcycle taxis.

Both companies were started by a group of friends in their twenties who were responding to an emerging wave of Internet connectivity that swept the country at the time.

“There was something of a tipping point where people began to see the potential of the internet, especially with the advent of mobile devices,” said Aluwi, Gojek’s co-founder and CEO.

In a sprawling country with the fourth largest population in the world and a rapidly growing middle class, the founders were on the trail. In the years that followed, both companies ventured into digital payments and other services.

Imagine that Amazon, DoorDash, Uber, PayPal, Stripe are combined with each other.

Tokopedia has doubled in size to add new market segments such as parents and small stallholders to its ecosystem. In the meantime, Gojek has expanded its ride-hailing platform regionally and expanded its local super app, which offers users on-demand services from food to massages and manicures.

In 2015, the two began working together, using Gojek drivers to deliver Tokopedia products on the same day outside of rush hour.

“We were the first in the world to form a partnership between an on-demand platform and an e-commerce platform,” said Aluwi.

A localized super app

Six years later, amid growing competition from regional and global tech companies, the two agreed to officially merge last month into an $ 18 billion deal – Indonesia’s largest deal to date.

“Imagine that Amazon, DoorDash, Uber, PayPal and Stripe are combined,” said Tanuwijaya. “There is a saying that if you want to go fast you go alone; if you want to go far, you go together. GoTo basically means going far, going together. “

In the new structure, Andre Soelistyo from GoJek will take over as CEO of GoTo Group and GoTo Financial, Patrick Cao from Tokopedia will become President, while Aluwi and Tanuwijaya will remain CEOs of Gojek and Tokopedia, respectively.

The combined company has over 100 million monthly active users, more than 11 million dealers and over 2 million drivers in an ecosystem that accounts for 2% of Indonesia’s $ 1 trillion GDP, the company said.

GoTo hopes to use it to capture more of the market in Indonesia and beyond.

Seize the opportunity in Southeast Asia

According to a recent study, Indonesia’s digital economy is expected to be worth $ 124 billion by 2025 as the value of the broader Southeast Asian online market triples to more than $ 309 billion.

For GoTo, this includes providing payments and financial services in a country where 47 million adults do not have access to popular financial services and products, and 92 million people have never used a bank.

“It’s these people, with or without a bank account, where illness or economic shock can really make the difference between belonging to the middle class and falling back into poverty,” said Aluwi. “So this is both a huge business opportunity and an area where we really believe we can make a big difference.”

To date, neither Gojek nor Tokopedia are profitable.

GoTo is said to be planning another round of funding ahead of a public listing, likely in Jakarta and the US. The company already has an impressive list of investors including Softbank, Alibaba, Tencent, Facebook, and Google.

“In terms of the timeframe, not just for going public but for all product development, my timeframe is always yesterday,” said Tanuwijaya. “But to be realistic for the team and so on, it’s as soon as possible. We hope we can try to get on the list hopefully by the end of this year.”

In April, rival super app Grab completed a Nasdaq listing through the world’s largest “blank check merger” – a special-purpose acquisition company valued at nearly $ 40 billion. GoTo has a public market valuation target of $ 35 billion to $ 40 billion.

The GoTo and Grab IPOs will also serve as a litmus test for the region. If successful, it could pave the way for more tech startups as investor appetite grows.

“Historically, Southeast Asia has had a slightly more difficult time getting on the radar alongside China and India,” said Hoppe. “The last few years have shown that the digital economy is now at least competing with India. But the potential is clearly there and I think international investors have become aware of it.”

Prepare for global alignment

With the newly combined resources and thriving business in the new landscape, the company is now planning its expansion strategy, including an ambitious sustainability pledge.

“GoTo comes with a great responsibility,” said Tanuwijaya. “We’re trying to provide solutions to a problem we figured out a decade ago. But that solution will also create another problem: with millions of drivers, emissions, so many dealerships, packaging, and so on.”

GoTo is an Indonesian technology company that emerged in May 2021 from the merger of ridesharing giant Gojek and the e-commerce platform Tokopedia.

The bold ambitions imply that the GoTo of 2030 could look very different than it is today. But as for the leaders, they’re just getting started.

Biden finances would give CDC greatest funding increase in practically 20 years

President Joe Biden’s first budget proposal would give the largest funding boost in nearly two decades to the agency most closely tracking the coronavirus pandemic, his administration said Friday.

The budget blueprint for fiscal 2022 would include $8.7 billion in discretionary funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to budget documents shared by the Office of Management and Budget.

The agency said that budget bump would build on the CDC investments doled out in the American Rescue Plan, the $1.9 trillion Covid relief plan that Biden signed into law in March.

The new funding would be used to “support core public health capacity improvements in States and Territories, modernize public health data collection nationwide, train new epidemiologists and other public health experts, and rebuild international capacity to detect, prepare for, and respond to emerging global threats,” the OMB said.

While the CDC funding request is a big increase from recent years, it comprises just a small slice of Biden’s $6 trillion budget proposal for 2022. The request wraps in funding for a double-barreled, multitrillion-dollar economic overhaul plan that the president unveiled earlier this year.

More than 33 million Covid infections, and at least 593,466 deaths, have been reported in the U.S., according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

From before Covid was even officially labeled a pandemic, the CDC has issued guidance on how to slow or prevent the spread of the virus in different environments, from summer camps to nursing homes. The agency has now issued and updated more than 200 guidance documents, its website shows.

But the budget proposal would go beyond funding the agency’s disease-focused work.

The budget materials say $153 million would be allocated for the CDC’s Social Determinants of Health program to work on “improving health equity and data collection for racial and ethnic populations.”

The government would also provide $100 million for the CDC’s Climate and Health program as part of a $1.2 billion investment in strengthening resilience to wildfires, floods, droughts and other climate-related disasters.

The budget request for the Health and Human Services Department would double firearm violence prevention research at the CDC and the National Institutes of Health.

Overall, HHS is requesting $133.7 billion in discretionary funding — a $25.3 billion, or 23.4%, bump from the enacted budget of fiscal 2021.

The Largest Dance Present in City? At a Brooklyn Nets Sport

I found an impressive performance – truly a spectacle – in a place I never expected: a basketball game.

The Brooklynettes, the Brooklyn Nets dance team, have been a pandemic anomaly since February: They perform live at games for nearly 2,000 spectators. It’s not the same as it has ever been before – it’s better. The reduced capacity Barclays Center is more intimate. The ushers treat you like a guest at a dinner party. The players are more sharply focused. And the dancers, whether they are performing their choreographed routines or responding to an exciting setting, are critical to the whole thing.

Back in the day, a Brooklynettes number seemed to have three qualities: speed, strength, and hair. The lines were wide. Were the dancers skillful and meticulous? Absolutely. But at the games, their hard work was masked by the noise and crowds of fans. The reality was that this wasn’t so much a dance team as it was a group of backup dancers for a basketball team.

While the Brooklynettes are still concentrating on hip-hop and street jazz this season, the look is different and more precise. At a recent arena rehearsal, Asha Singh, the Brooklynettes coach and occasional choreographer, slowed the dancers to clean up a routine. “Which angle from the left do we go?” she asked them. “Are we going to the corner? Are we stepping aside? “

Why should a position be held for a millisecond during a sprint of a dance thing? When these six bodies move as one, they pull you in – not just to dance, but into the arena, where their movement creates an invisible line of energy between the players and fans.

China-Russia cooperation might be Biden’s greatest problem

President Joe Biden faces a nightmare scenario of global consequence: intensified Sino-Russian strategic cooperation to undermine US influence and strengthen Biden’s efforts to rally democratic allies.

It is the most significant and least recognized test of Biden’s leadership to date: it could be the defining challenge of his presidency.

Over the past week, Russia and China have simultaneously escalated their separate military activities and threats to the sovereignty of Ukraine and Taiwan, respectively – countries whose living independence is an affront to Moscow and Beijing but at the center of the interests of the US and its allies in theirs Regions stands.

Even if the actions of Moscow and Beijing do not lead to a military invasion of either country, and most experts still consider this unlikely, the scale and intensity of the military measures require immediate attention. US and Allied officials dare not deny the certainty that Russia and China are exchanging information or the growing likelihood that they will increasingly coordinate actions and strategies.

Viewed independently, the challenges in China and Russia would be a handful for any US president. In any case, there is nothing theoretical about the military escalations in Ukraine and Taiwan.

Last week, Russia amassed the largest concentration of troops along the Ukrainian border since annexing Crimea in 2014. According to Ukrainian government officials, Russian President Vladimir Putin has brought more than 40,000 soldiers near Ukraine’s eastern border to conduct “combat training exercises” over a border period of two weeks.

At the same time, China has taken its military overflights into Taiwan’s air defense zone to unprecedented levels after flying more than 250 sorties near the island this year. The Chinese military sent 25 fighter jets to Taiwan last Monday, a record high since Taiwan announced figures last year.

The Biden government responded to Putin this week with the carrot of a summit and the rod of new sanctions. On Tuesday, Biden called Putin signaling that he would not try to escalate tensions with the leader, whom he had agreed to be a “killer” just a month ago.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stood next to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as they condemned Russia’s military build-up. The Biden government’s strongest reprimand came Thursday when it announced new economic sanctions against 38 Russian entities accused of electoral disruption and cyberattacks, expelled ten diplomats, and introduced measures to keep U.S. financial institutions trading in newly issued Russian government bonds and bonds prohibited.

China’s raids on Taiwan came soon after the State Department issued guidelines relaxing the rules for US government officials working with Taiwan. Blinken said the government is concerned about China’s “increasingly aggressive actions” and is committed to ensuring that Taiwan “has the ability to defend itself.” The United States demonstrated its support for Taiwan on Wednesday by sending an unofficial delegation consisting of a former US Senator and two former US Assistant Secretary of State to Taiwan.

This unfolding great power drama couldn’t come at a worse time for the Biden government, whose officials won’t reach their 100-day term until April 30. However, this is likely the point for Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as they try to gain an edge before Biden can move to a safer post by reviewing policy and filling senior leadership positions.

These real events also complicate the Biden administration’s carefully crafted plans to methodically order its actions, and reasonably argue that US renewal is a prerequisite for effective global governance.

Biden’s goal is to suppress Covid-19 through accelerated vaccine distribution, increase economic dynamism and competitiveness through $ 4 trillion in stimulus and infrastructure spending, and restore relationships with key allies, a goal that Biden’s meetings with the Japanese Prime Minister Suga this week reflected Yoshihide.

The Biden administration faces a number of other foreign policy challenges at the same time, from the president’s announcement this week to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan by September 11, to efforts to keep nuclear talks with Iran despite the attack to resume facility on Tehran’s nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz last Sunday.

Not only because Ms. Carter became the first black costume designer to win an Oscar in 2019 when she took home the statuette for “Black Panther”. Or because she designed around 800 different looks for the sequel “Coming 2 America”, created a universe of exhilarating pan-border style, and used her platform not only to showcase her own designs, but also work by accident 30 other designers to improve on.

But because we’ve steamed indoors, consumed streaming services like water, and lived vicariously through storylines, the on-screen characters have become increasingly important. They have become companions, distraction, and entertainment.

And role models for what you wear.

As the normal clues for getting dressed have moved into the distance – street and office life; Peer groups and parties – what we saw on the screen has become empty.

They became public talking points, just as street style and the red carpet once were. When we started to identify with the characters, their jobs and family situations, we wanted to dress like that too.

It makes sense. After all, clothing is simply the costume that we wear to play ourselves in everyday life.

And that meant that the costume designers behind them were suddenly being recognized as being as influential as … well, any influencer. Or fashion designer. This may be true to varying degrees in the past, but has rarely been so obvious.

“When everyone was stuck at home, they really noticed what was first on screen,” said Nancy Steiner, the costume designer behind Promising Young Woman, a sexual assault and revenge movie in which Carey Mulligan swings out of nowhere -faced young woman in pastel colors to fake drunken sirens in pinstripe suits and skin-tight clothes.

Ms. Steiner said she never got the attention she got this year in her 34-year career despite working on such popular films as “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation”.

So the question is: when the pandemic ends and we step into the light, will costume designers finally get the respect they deserve? Not just as the creative minds behind the characters in our favorite films, but as triggers for so many of the trends that we actually wear?

The problem, said Arianne Phillips, the costume designer behind Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and thanks to her work with Madonna, a rare name known beyond the studio lot, is that costume designers rarely become brands. As a result, she said, “They have not been recognized for the impact they have had on culture.”

Once upon a time this was not the case. Once upon a time, in the late 1920s, Gilbert Adrian was considered a great American fashion designer who dressed Hollywood stars like Rita Hayworth both on and off screen.

Edith Head, costume designer for Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Barbara Stanwyck, later took on the role and toured the country with “Hollywood Fashion Shows”, wrote books (including “Dress for Success”) and even designed a teenage clothing line. She also guested on television and “gave dress advice to the eight million women who watched the House Party, Art Linkletter’s CBS afternoon show,” wrote Bronwyn Cosgrave in Made for Each Other, a book about fashion and the world Oscars.

For the most part, however, the costume designer exists in the shadow of the cinema in which he works. The five nominees instead included “Mulan” (in Imperial China), “Mank” (1930s and 40s) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (1927). There’s no question that the clothes in these films were dazzling, but they didn’t change what the public wanted to wear to get the milk or wear on the weekend. The studios themselves basking in the associated glow have little incentive to share the limelight. You own the work of the costume designer. Even when films are so influential that they spark retail collaboration (see Banana Republic’s Mad Men collection), studios often cut out the costume designer – even if the end result doesn’t work out too well.

“You want all the fame,” said Mrs. Carter.

And yet, at a time when appropriation itself is a hot topic, the appropriation of the work of costume designers is largely overlooked. (Where’s Diet Prada When You Need It?)

To that end, Mr. Pérez of the Costume Designers Guild has urged its members to talk about their work on social media, claim the recognition they deserve, and create a power base and profile that can go beyond their specific projects. He also has a marketing committee to help out.

“The public wants what we do,” said Mr Pérez, who recently donned an entire “fantasy prom” for “Never Have I Ever,” which he expects will spark new trends once we get out of isolation come out wanting to celebrate. “You just don’t quite know.”

As the coronavirus spread over the past year, people all over the world became intertwined and separated from each other. For many Dungeons & Dragons players, this meant ending their regularly scheduled in-person tabletop sessions.

And yet the D&D brand had its greatest year ever.

With increasing vaccination rates, the end of the pandemic seems to be in sight. The D&D brand is developing in a strong position. Heavy fans took advantage of Lockdown to teach friends and family how to play and ushered in a new cohort of craps players who will move from socially distant online chat rooms to crowded tables in the coming year.

And the coast parent-wizards will have a new product to devour if they do. The Hasbro division will launch two D&D video games this year and accelerate the release of new books and box sets.

D&D sales rose 33% last year – which contributed to a six-year period of growth. The toy maker does not share the specific sales figures for the brand or for Magic: The Gathering and Digital Gaming, which also fall under the Wizards banner. However, it was reported that Wizards’ total revenue increased 24% to $ 816 million in 2020.

D&D was first released in 1974 and has long been part of popular culture. Sales have been on a strong upward trend since 2014, when Wizards of the Coast updated their rulebook to bring out the fifth edition known to gamers. This version focuses more on storytelling than complex game mechanics.

At the same time, the number of people streaming D&D games live on video platforms such as Twitch and posting hour-long sessions on YouTube increased. Popular D&D groups like Critical Role, High Rollers and Relics and Rarities with voice actors and celebrity players have continued to spark interest in the game.

That relaunch, coupled with an increase in social media and video sharing platforms, resulted in “a flammable mix of explosive growth,” said Chris Cocks, president of Wizards of the Coast.

Role for initiative

For generations, D&D has typically been played around a table. The dungeon master organizes the game, sets the quests for the players and describes everything they see and hear on their journey. Players create characters, improvise how those heroes – or villains – react to scenarios, and roll the dice to determine their success or failure in those actions.

When the pandemic broke out, gamers, who often gathered for weekly or monthly meetings, had to find new ways to interact online. Many turned to video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Teams and Skype to put their group together, and used services like Roll20 or D&D Beyond to swap cards and track statistics.

In recent years, sales of new player manuals and starter kits have been a big part of the D&D brand’s growth. This accelerated in 2020. Box sets and the company’s essentials kit, which contains everything players will need need to start an adventure saw record sales last year, Cocks said.

“That means new players are coming in and taking over the game,” he said.

Adventure books that guide dungeon masters on how to run a campaign and core rulebooks that help players create their characters and understand how to play also achieved record sales.

And Wizards of the Coast isn’t the only company benefiting from renewed interest in the nearly five-decade-old game.

“Overall interest in table games has increased significantly over the past year as the pandemic and people have more time to play,” said Dan Leeder, vice president of operations at Noble Knight Games, a hobby shop in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.

Leeder found that D&D book sales rose about 30% over the year, and sales of dice, miniatures, terrains, and other accessories for the game also rose.

Bryan LeBlanc, manager of The Battle Standard, a hobby shop in East Windsor, Connecticut, said sales of D&D and other board games had skyrocketed over the past year, prompting him to double his selection.

“I think we got our first real look at Wizards’ financial contribution when they re-segmented the business,” said Stephanie Wissink, general manager at Jefferies. “Boy was that eye opening and I think best regards. Hasbro has invested heavily in the Wizards brand, trying to double the size of the business unit in the five-year period between 2018 and 2023. The company is on the right track during an investor presentation in February.

The division has seen steady growth in online gamers for its game Magic: The Gathering Arena and hopes to develop similar platforms for D&D. The Globes erkennen Filme und Fernsehen und sind voller Stars, mit keiner Snoozy-Kategorie – hier gibt es keinen Preis für Tonbearbeitung. Als der Branchenkomplex für Auszeichnungen in die Höhe schoss – es ist jetzt ein fast ganzjähriges Unternehmen, das von Strategen geprägt und von Reportern genau verfolgt wird -, wuchs auch die relative Macht der Mitglieder.

Nachdem die Show vom Fernsehen aufgenommen wurde, wurde sie zu einer goldenen Gans. Im Jahr 2018 erklärte sich NBC bereit, 60 Millionen US-Dollar pro Jahr für Übertragungsrechte zu zahlen, was etwa dem Dreifachen der vorherigen Lizenzgebühr entspricht. Während die Oscar-Verleihung und die Emmys in den letzten Jahren Millionen von Zuschauern verloren haben, hat sich das Publikum der Golden Globes konstant auf 18 bis 20 Millionen gehalten, weshalb NBC bereit war, sich zu verbessern.

“Es ist eine Fernsehshow eines großen Zeltnetzwerks und als solche von unschätzbarem Wert für Filmkampagnen, die darauf hoffen, um Oscar-Nominierungen und Siege zu kämpfen”, sagte Tony Angellotti, ein Publizist, der Preiskampagnen durchführt, in einer E-Mail. „Und die HFPA-Erfolgsbilanz bei der Identifizierung würdiger Filme ist unbestritten. Das ist nicht nichts. “

Um für einen Globus stimmen zu können, müssen Mitglieder mindestens sechsmal im Jahr veröffentlichen und an 25 Pressekonferenzen des Verbandes teilnehmen, zu denen Prominente und Nachrichtenmacher eingeladen sind, bestätigten mehrere Mitglieder. Wenn Mitglieder zum Zeitpunkt des Vereins zu Filmfestivals reisen möchten, müssen sie laut einer Kopie der von der New York Times überprüften Reiserichtlinien an noch mehr Pressekonferenzen teilnehmen. Die Regeln besagen, dass sie keine Presseausschnitte im Zusammenhang mit ihren Reisen erstellen müssen, wenn sie fünf oder weniger Reisen unternehmen.

Da die Organisation gemeinnützig ist, ist auch die Hollywood Foreign Press Association steuerfrei. Die Einreichung des im Juni 2019 endenden Steuerjahres ergab, dass die Gruppe auf rund 55 Millionen US-Dollar in bar saß. Es spendete etwa 5 Millionen US-Dollar für verschiedene Zwecke, darunter 500.000 US-Dollar für das Reporter-Komitee für Pressefreiheit und 500.000 US-Dollar für die Umwelt-Website Inside Climate News.

“Die Finanzierung war enorm wichtig”, sagte David Sassoon, der Gründer und Herausgeber von Inside Climate News, in einer E-Mail. “Es hat unsere Finanzen gefestigt und uns geholfen, die Albträume von 2020 zu überstehen.”

Den Steuererklärungen zufolge zahlte die steuerbefreite gemeinnützige Organisation mehr als 3 Millionen US-Dollar an Gehältern und anderen Entschädigungen an Mitglieder und Mitarbeiter. Die Steuererklärung ergab auch Reisekosten in Höhe von 1,3 Mio. USD für dieses Jahr. Der Verein hat angegeben, dass er in der Regel die Kosten für Mitglieder übernimmt, die zu Filmfestivals und dergleichen reisen möchten.

Es gibt auch eine Entschädigung für die Erfüllung von Aufgaben, von denen mehrere Mitglieder sagen, dass sie früher kostenlos erledigt wurden. Laut dem Bericht des Schatzmeisters von der Januar-Generalversammlung des Verbandes zahlt die Mitgliedschaft im TV Viewing Committee des Vereins monatlich 1.000 US-Dollar. Mitglieder des Foreign Film Watching Committee stecken pro Stück 3.465 US-Dollar ein. Laut Protokoll sitzen zwei Dutzend Personen in diesem Ausschuss, was bedeutete, dass die Anforderungen an das Ansehen internationaler Filme den Verband in einem Monat 83.160 USD kosteten.

Der Verein hat auch einen beratenden Ausschuss, einen Geschichtsausschuss, einen Wohlfahrtsausschuss, einen Reiseausschuss, einen Filmfestivalausschuss, einen Finanzausschuss und einen Veranstaltungsausschuss, die laut Bericht des Schatzmeisters alle mit Stipendien ausgestattet sind.

Einige Mitglieder gaben an, dass die Zahl der zahlenden Ausschüsse in den letzten Jahren explodiert ist. Die Mitglieder kämpfen um mehrere Positionen und die Loyalität wird durch die Ernennung von Ausschüssen belohnt. Dies hat einige beunruhigt, die wollen, dass der Verein in der Stadt weniger zur Pointe wird. Ein Mitglied befürchtete, dass die Gruppe von Mitgliedern überrannt wird, die den größten Teil ihres Einkommens aus der Organisation und nicht aus dem Journalismus beziehen.

Goeckner sagte, der Verein entschädige die Mitglieder nur, wenn sie zusätzliche Arbeit verrichten und im Grunde genommen als Angestellte fungieren, um Aufgaben zu erledigen, die eine bezahlte Arbeit der Mitarbeiter an anderer Stelle darstellen würden. Die Entschädigung sei “um Größenordnungen geringer” als die, die ähnliche Organisationen zahlen. Und er bemerkte, dass die Gruppe „keine Wohltätigkeitsorganisation“ sei und dass das angesammelte Kapital für eine geplante Modernisierung des Hauptsitzes in West Hollywood vorgesehen sei.

Dennoch gibt es Debatten darüber, wie viel von seinen Einnahmen der Verein für sich behalten sollte.

Der Anwalt von Flaa, David Quinto, sagte, dass der Verband aufgrund seines Steuerbefreiungsstatus ausländischen Kunstjournalisten im weiteren Sinne zugute kommen sollte, nicht nur denjenigen in der Gruppe. Er sagte, der Verband “glaubt, dass er über dem Gesetz steht” und nannte sein Verhalten “offensichtlich unangemessen”.

Ofer Lion, ein Anwalt in Los Angeles mit Fachkenntnissen in steuerbefreiten Organisationen, sagte jedoch, dass Unternehmen mit gegenseitigem Nutzen wie der Verband nur einem gemeinsamen Zweck ihrer Mitglieder zugute kommen müssen und dies als steuerbefreite Organisation nach 501 (c) (6) tun müssen Stellen Sie nur sicher, dass sie in irgendeiner Weise ihrer Branche insgesamt zugute kommen. Zahlungen an Mitglieder für ihre Arbeit für die Organisation seien legal, solange sie als angemessen angesehen würden.

“Dort gibt es einige gesunde Zahlen”, sagte Lion, nachdem er die Steuererklärung der Organisation überprüft hatte, “aber nicht wirklich blass.”

Die erklärte Mission der Gruppe besteht im Wesentlichen darin, die Beziehungen zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten und dem Ausland zu stärken, indem sie ihre Kultur- und Unterhaltungsindustrie abdeckt. Aber es wurde immer wieder unter die Lupe genommen, als rätselhafte Preisentscheidungen getroffen wurden, am bekanntesten 1982, als Pia Zadora über Kathleen Turner und Elizabeth McGovern zum besten neuen Star gekürt wurde. Später wurde bekannt, dass Zadoras Produzent, der zufällig auch ihr Ehemann war, die Gruppe vor der Abstimmung nach Las Vegas geflogen hatte. CBS, die die Sendung ausgestrahlt hatte, stellte ihre Sendung ein, und es würde Jahre dauern, bis sie zum Netzwerkfernsehen zurückkehrte.

Im Jahr 2014 veröffentlichte ein ehemaliger Verbandspräsident eine Abhandlung, in der er vorschlug, dass seine Kollegen durch den Bevorzugungshandel beeinflusst werden könnten.

Der Verein hat in den letzten Jahren versucht, sein Image zu verbessern. 1999 schickte sie 400 US-Dollar Coach-Uhren zurück, die von einer Filmfirma an Mitglieder ausgegeben wurden, und forderte die Mitglieder 2016 auf, einen Teil des Duftgeschenks der Marke Tom Ford zurückzugeben, das jeder von ihnen von den Herstellern von „Nocturnal Animals“ erhalten hatte.

Heutzutage dürfen Mitglieder keine Geschenke über 125 USD annehmen. (Die Gruppe sagt, sie habe eine „robustere“ Geschenkpolitik eingeführt.) Dennoch können sie umworben werden. Für einige war es keine Überraschung, als die schaumige Serie „Emily in Paris“, die von Kritikern ausgesprochen gemischte Kritiken erhielt, dieses Jahr zwei Golden Globe-Nominierungen erhielt. Im September 2019 flogen Dutzende von Verbandsmitgliedern nach Paris, um das „Emily“ -Set zu besuchen, und wurden vom Paramount Network im Fünf-Sterne-Hotel Peninsula eingerichtet.

Und obwohl es angeblich eine Welle von Reformen gegeben hat, ist die eklektische Mitgliederliste der Gruppe seit Jahren weitgehend gleich geblieben.

Eine Überprüfung eines Dienstplans für 2020 zeigt, dass zu seinen Mitgliedern Yola Czaderska-Hayek gehört, eine Frau, die als „polnische First Lady von Hollywood“ bekannt ist; Alexander Newski, ein ehemaliger Mr. Universe und Bodybuilder, der in Filmen wie „Moscow Heat“ mitgespielt hat; und Judy Solomon, eine Veteranin der Organisation von mehr als 60 Jahren, die auf ihre Rolle als “The Golden Beast” aufmerksam gemacht hat, eine Aufgabe von nicht geringer Bedeutung, wenn es darum geht, Prominente bei der Zeremonie ohne Rüschen zu setzen Gefieder.

In Erklärungen gegenüber der New York Times zeigten sich zwei langjährige Mitglieder der Organisation stolz auf die Hollywood Foreign Press Association und ihre Arbeit. Eines der Mitglieder, Meher Tatna, der derzeitige Vorstandsvorsitzende, wies auf die philanthropischen Initiativen der Gruppe hin und sagte, sie habe das ganze Jahr über Dankesbriefe erhalten.

Czaderska-Hayek wiederholte diesen Stolz in einem Video, das die polnische Regierung 2010 auf YouTube gepostet hatte, stellte jedoch auch fest, dass die Forderung nach einer Mitgliedschaft eine Belastung darstellen könnte.

“Es ist unglaublich harte Arbeit”, sagte Czaderska-Hayek laut den englischen Untertiteln des Videos. “Wir müssen jedes Jahr mindestens 300 US-Filme sehen.”
