SpaceX launches Starship SN11 however crashes on touchdown try

The latest SpaceX prototype of its Starship rocket was destroyed on Tuesday while attempting to land after a clean launch.

The company’s livestream of the flight test froze as the rocket landed, and thick fog around SpaceX’s Texas facility made it difficult for witnesses to see what had happened.

The spaceship prototype Serial Number 11 or SN11 reached its target altitude of approximately 10 kilometers. The rocket is made of stainless steel and represents the early versions introduced in 2019. Elon Musk’s company develops Starship with the aim of bringing cargo and people on missions to the moon and Mars.

The Starship prototypes are about 150 feet tall, or about the size of a 15-story building, and are each powered by three Raptor rocket engines.

Musk tweeted about half an hour after the test that “at least the crater is in the right place!”

“Something significant happened just after we landed. Should know what it was when we can examine the parts later today,” Musk said.

SpaceX’s chief integration engineer, John Insprucker, noted that the thick fog in the area prevented the company from showing camera views beyond those of the rocket.

“The frozen view we saw on the camera doesn’t mean we’re waiting for the signal. Starship 11 isn’t coming back. Don’t wait for the landing,” Insprucker said. “We seem to have lost all the data on the vehicle and of course the team is not on the landing pad, so we’ll be out there and see what we had.”

SpaceX has successfully launched four Starship prototypes for high altitude flight tests, starting with the SN8 in December, then SN9 in February, and SN10 and now SN11. While the takeoffs went largely according to plan, the landing attempts ended with a large number of explosions. SpaceX is the only major rocket builder trying to land its vehicles after launch. Traditionally, large rocket amplifiers are discarded after launch.

Musk’s goal is for Starship to be fully reusable and envision a missile that resembles an airliner and that can launch between flights with little maintenance and fuel. While SpaceX didn’t successfully land the prototype SN10 until after a high-altitude flight test – although the rocket exploded a few minutes later – the company landed earlier prototypes after short flights to an altitude of around 500 feet.

Musk said Tuesday that SpaceX’s next prototype, Starship SN15, will hit the Launchpad “in a few days”.

“It has hundreds of design improvements in terms of structure, avionics / software, and engine,” said Musk.

Starship is one of two “Manhattan projects” that SpaceX is developing at the same time. The other is the Starlink satellite internet program. Musk previously estimated that Starship would cost around $ 5 billion to fully develop, although SpaceX has not disclosed how much it spent on the program. The company raised $ 850 million in its most recent capital raise, valued at $ 74 billion, last month.

SpaceX is preparing to launch the latest prototype of its next-generation Starship rocket in the system’s second high-altitude test on Tuesday.

The spaceship prototype Serial Number 9 or SN9 flies up to 10 kilometers or approximately 32,800 feet in altitude. The flight will be similar to the SpaceX conducted in December when the prototype SN8 took off on the tallest and longest flight to date. The SN8 flight met several development goals, including testing the system’s aerodynamics and performing a flip to orientate yourself for landing. However, the prototype exploded on impact because the missile could not slow down enough.

SN9 is made of stainless steel, with the prototypes representing the early versions of the rocket that CEO Elon Musk unveiled last year. The company is developing Starship with the aim of bringing cargo and up to 100 people simultaneously on missions to the moon and Mars.

As with SN8, the goal of the SN9 flight is not necessarily to reach maximum altitude, but rather to test several important parts of the spacecraft system. The Starship prototype stands about 150 feet tall, or about the size of a 15-story building, and is powered by three Raptor rocket engines. SpaceX fires all three engines to take off, then shuts them down one by one as they approach the intended altitude.

SN9’s attempt to launch was delayed for about a week as SpaceX worked to get permission from the Federal Aviation Administration to launch. Its SN8 flight violated the company’s existing Starship license, The Verge reported first and the FAA later confirmed that the federal aerospace agency had denied a SpaceX exemption request to exceed the maximum public risk that allow federal safety regulations, the FAA said in a statement.

SpaceX had to investigate its non-compliance and force Musk’s company to suspend launch until the investigation was completed and the FAA signed.

“The FAA determined late Monday (Feb. 1) that SpaceX complies with all safety and related federal regulations and is authorized to conduct SN9 operations under its launch license,” the FAA said.

Key tests for the SN9 flight include turning off the engines one at a time, transferring propellant from the main tanks to the header, flipping it over for the “belly flop” reentry maneuver, and controlling the descent through the air with the missile’s four flaps.

SpaceX stressed that “the dynamic development test schedule” may result in the attempt to launch being delayed, as was the case with previous Starship launches.

Virgin Galactic aborts spaceflight try in New Mexico

Virgin Galactic’s most recent space flight test was halted after the engine of its SpaceShipTwo vehicle “Unity” failed to fully ignite while attempting to take off over New Mexico on Saturday.

While there were no passengers on board, Unity was piloted for the flight by CJ Sturckow and Dave Mackay. Virgin Galactic wanted to reach the edge of space for the third time, in its first space flight from its New Mexico operating base. The spaceship landed back on the runway at Spaceport America, about 50 miles north of the city of Las Cruces.

“The firing sequence for the rocket motor was not completed. The vehicle and crew are in great condition. We have several engines ready at Spaceport America. We will check the vehicle and fly again soon,” the company said in a tweet.

Virgin Galactic confirmed that the spacecraft had successfully returned on a glide flight to land at Spaceport America in New Mexico, where it took off under its carrier aircraft about an hour earlier. The company found that both pilots are “safe and sound”.

An unofficial webcast hosted by space news site NASASpaceflight appeared to show that the spacecraft engine stalled after a brief shot. SpaceShipTwo was released under its carrier aircraft at an altitude of about 40,000 feet, with Unity’s engine igniting just before shutdown. Typically, the spacecraft is set free from the jet and then fires its rocket motor for more than a minute, reaching a speed about three times the speed of sound.

Virgin Galactic’s spaceflight attempt was the company’s first in nearly 22 months. The previous space flight attempt in February 2019 when Unity reached an altitude of almost 90 kilometers during a test launch from the Mojave Desert in California. The company is working to launch commercial service flights from Spaceport America, where it has relocated operations from its development and manufacturing facilities in the Mojave Air and Spaceport.

Saturday’s flight was the first of three remaining space tests the company plans to conduct to complete development of its spacecraft system. The third will wear founder Sir Richard Branson. The impact of the canceled test on Virgin Galactic’s flight schedule remains to be determined. The Branson flight was previously scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.

In addition to the two pilots, Unity’s flight on Saturday conducted microgravity experiments for NASA, awarded as part of the agency’s Flight Opportunities program.

Virgin Galactic has roughly 600 customer reservations on its books, most of which sold a few years ago at a price of $ 200,000 to $ 250,000 per ticket. The company plans to fully reopen ticket sales in 2021 after Branson’s flight, although it is not known how much tickets will cost after sales reopen. Company executives previously said that due to the high demand for tickets, Virgin Galactic expects to significantly increase prices on its first commercial flights.
