Sotheby’s and Phillips Announce Departures and Arrivals

On Wednesday, two of the three major auction houses announced changes to the composition of their leadership teams.

Phillips announced that Stephen Brooks would become the company’s next chief executive as its former director, Edward Dolman, took on a new role as chairman of the board. Separately, Sotheby’s said the visual arts director Amy Cappellazzo would leave the company after more than five years to lead it to billionaire clients and big sales. Her duties will be split between three different employees when she leaves the auction house this summer.

Changes in the upper echelons of the auction world show how companies are trying to reposition themselves for growth during the pandemic, said Natasha Degen, chair of art market studies at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

“This is a moment when in-store sales have plummeted,” said Degen, citing the 26 percent decline in global auction sales last year. “So auction houses spun online quickly. They really got into new categories like NFTs, sneakers, and streetwear. There is also more cooperation between auction houses and luxury brands. “

Recognition…about Phillips

Earlier this week, Phillips launched a new advisory service designed to help clients find artwork in the primary market, which consists of galleries and artist studios. The initiative showed how auction houses have taken the year to diversify their offerings and penetrate areas of business that were once tightly controlled by art galleries.

“Our ambition is considerable,” said Brooks, who views the advisory service as part of a larger plan to accelerate growth for the auction house. Brooks, 56, and a key board member of Christie’s and its senior management for over 11 years, also plans to expand Phillips’ presence in Asia and the 20th century art market. He added that he would like the company to double the size of its overall business over the next five years.

At Sotheby’s, change means a triumvirate of new positions. Brooke Lampley will oversee auctions and private sales for categories such as old masters and contemporary art. Mari-Claudia Jiménez will lead the company’s global business development activities. and Gregoire Billault is promoted to Chair of Contemporary Art.

“We are trying to position ourselves for the future,” said Charles F. Stewart, Managing Director of Sotheby’s, recognizing the role that Cappellazzo played in increasing sales. “We are in a phase of adjustment, adjustment and transformation.”

Cappellazzo first became known in the 1990s as director of the Rubell Collection in Miami. She later helped set up Art Basel Miami Beach. She started working at Christie’s in 2001 until starting her own consultancy Art Agency, Partners in 2014. Two years later, Sotheby’s acquired the company for $ 85 million and signed a five-year deal that ended in January.

Her tenure at Sotheby’s helped cement her reputation as the rainmaker in the industry. In 2016, she organized an auction of musician David Bowie’s artwork, and a year later oversaw the sale of a $ 110.5 million Basquiat painting. Earlier this year, she also helped secure philanthropist Anne Marion’s $ 150 million collection, which will be auctioned off at Sotheby’s this spring.

“They kind of know when the time is right to leave,” Cappellazzo said in an interview, declining to talk about her next business other than saying it wouldn’t be in direct competition with Sotheby’s. “The real story is what I do next, but first I want this chapter to end.”

Garland to announce DOJ probe of Minneapolis police after Chauvin verdict

President Joe Biden listens as Attorney General Merrick Garland speaks in the Rose Garden of the White House in Washington on April 8, 2021, on gun violence prevention executive measures.

Attorney General Merrick Garland will announce Wednesday that the Justice Department is opening an investigation into the practices of the Minneapolis Police Department, Justice Department officials told NBC News.

The announcement will come the day after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted by a jury for the murder of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed in custody last year.

The announcement, expected at 10 a.m. ET, was reported earlier by the Associated Press.

The Justice Department probe is known as a sample or exercise exam. The Justice Department had previously announced a separate investigation into whether Chauvin was violating Floyd’s civil rights.

Unions at The Ringer and Gimlet Media announce their first contracts.

Unions representing employees of two well-known podcasting companies owned by Spotify, the audio streaming giant, announced on Wednesday that they had ratified their first employment contracts.

The larger of the two unions, with 65 employees, is at The Ringer, a sports and pop culture website with a podcasting network. The second union of the podcast production company Gimlet Media employs almost 50 people. The two groups were among the first in the podcasting industry to unionise, and both are represented by the Writers Guild of America, East.

Lowell Peterson, the guild’s executive director, said the contracts showed that the companies’ writers, producers and editors “add tremendous value to the major platforms they create content for.”

The contracts provide for a minimum base salary of $ 57,000 for union members at The Ringer and $ 73,000 at Gimlet Media, an annual pay increase of at least 2 percent, and severance pay of at least 11 weeks.

The agreements contain provisions that restrict the use of contractors and allow workers to obtain titles appropriate to their seniority.

The two companies will set up diversity committees made up of managers and union members and require that at least half of the candidates seriously considered for union positions open to outsiders come from under-represented groups such as ethnic minorities or people with disabilities come.

Ringer and Gimlet Media have dealt with internal race-related conflicts over the past year. At The Ringer, staff complained about the shortage of black writers and editors after company founder Bill Simmons hosted a podcast in which a colleague personally discussed the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder and praised Mr. Simmons’ commitment to diversity.

At Gimlet, the company recently canceled the last two episodes of a four-part series on racial inequality in food magazine Bon Appétit after employees complained that Gimlet himself suffered from similar problems.

Workers at both companies were unionized in 2019 and contract negotiations were at times controversial. Management refused to establish a top union priority – labor rights created by writers and podcasters that the companies will keep – but the unions ratified the treaties unanimously, according to the Writers’ Guild.

“We started this process with the aim of improving working conditions and remuneration in the company, especially for our worst-paid members,” the Ringer Union said in a statement. “We are very pleased to have achieved this goal with this contract.”

Spotify did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Biden to announce Merck will assist make Johnson & Johnson’s shot

President Joe Biden will announce Tuesday that pharmaceutical company Merck will help manufacture the Covid-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, a senior administrative official who has been confirmed to NBC News.

The decision is made as the administration is working to ramp up production of J & J’s single-shot vaccine. Senior government officials said Sunday the US government will ship J & J’s entire inventory of 3.9 million cans this week, adding that supply would be “uneven” over the following weeks. Another 16 million doses are expected by the end of the month.

Under the agreement, Merck will deploy two facilities in the US for J & J’s vaccine, the Washington Post previously reported. One will make the vaccine and the other will provide “fill-finish” services when the vaccine is put into vials.

Officials began scouring the country for additional manufacturing capacity after discovering in the early days of the government that J&J had fallen behind in vaccine production, according to NBC. They soon sought a deal with Merck, which abandoned plans to develop its own Covid vaccine in January after a clinical study showed its shots were ineffective.

J&J declined to comment on the deal with CNBC. In a statement, Merck said it was “unwavering in our commitment to contribute to the global response to the pandemic and prepare us to deal with future pandemics”.

The Washington Post reported the news earlier.

Biden is expected to make the announcement from the White House on Tuesday afternoon.

The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday approved J & J’s vaccine for use in people aged 18 and over. Unlike Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, patients with the single dose of J&J do not need to take a second dose and can be stored at refrigerator temperature for months.

In comparison, Pfizer’s vaccine must be stored in ultra-cold freezers that keep between minus 112 and minus 76 degrees Fahrenheit. However, the FDA recently allowed the company to store its vaccine for two weeks at temperatures commonly found in pharmaceutical freezers. Moderna vaccine must be shipped at 13 to 5 degrees above zero Fahrenheit.

The New York Times first reported in January that unexpected delays in manufacturing would result in decreased primary care of J & J’s medication if it were given emergency approval.

The Chief Medical Officer of the White House, Dr. Anthony Fauci said last month he was “disappointed” with the number of doses J&J originally expected, adding that the federal government had assumed there would be “significantly more”. The New Jersey-based company has signed a contract with the United States to supply 100 million cans by the end of June.

“It can take June, July and August to get everyone vaccinated,” Fauci told CNN on February 16. I don’t think anyone will disagree that this will be good by the end of summer and we’ll get into early fall. “

At the time, Bidens Covid Tsar Jeff Zients said the federal government was “doing everything it can to work with the company to expedite the delivery schedule”.

This is not the first partnership between two drugmakers to help improve vaccine supply.

In late January, French drug maker Sanofi announced it would help fill and package millions of doses of Pfizer’s two-shot vaccine to meet demand. Moderna has a partnership with the Swiss company Lonza, which makes most of the medicines for the company’s vaccine.

The Biden government has also announced that it is using the Defense Equipment Act to improve supplies of Pfizer’s vaccine.
