Air journey optimism boosts Asia-Pacific airline shares

SINGAPORE – Asia Pacific airline stocks traded Tuesday after numerous announcements significantly improved the outlook for international air travel.

Qantas Airways shares in Australia rose 2.55% while Air New Zealand shares rose 6%.

Those stocks rose when New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced that the “travel bubble” between her country and Australia would begin on April 19th.

Meanwhile, the Singapore Aviation Authority announced that from May the country will start accepting travelers using the International Air Transport Association (IATA) mobile passport for pre-departure checks. Singapore Airlines shares rose 0.2% on Tuesday.

“The trust of a leading airline such as Singapore in the IATA Travel Pass is extremely important,” said Willie Walsh, IATA general manager, in a statement.

“With ongoing testing, we are on track to see that the IATA Travel Pass is a critical tool in restarting the industry by providing governments with verified travel health information. And travelers can have full confidence that their personal information is secure and be under their own control, “said Walsh.

Elsewhere, Korean Air Lines stocks were flat, while Japanese airline stocks lagged the broader region. Japan Airlines fell 2.44% while ANA Holdings fell 2.19%.

Local media reported that as of Monday, quasi-emergency Covid-19 measures were carried out in several prefectures in Japan to contain a resurgence of infections.

The aviation industry is among the sectors hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic as authorities tightened border restrictions around the world to contain the spread of the virus.

Here are the companies that hit the headlines on Wall Street on Monday.

Eli Lilly – The drugmaker’s shares fell more than 9% after a phase 2 study of donanemab showed the treatment slowed the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Mizuho Securities said in a note that the results were “solid, not stunning”.

AMC Entertainment – The cinema giant’s shares rose 25.8% as it began reopening theaters in Los Angeles. AMC reopened two locations in the city on Monday and plans to reopen the remaining 23 theaters in Los Angeles by Friday. The company hopes to open all locations across the state by Friday.

American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Air Group – Shares in major US airlines rose Monday on optimism about the return to normal travel with the introduction of vaccines. Air traffic over the weekend reached its highest level in more than a year and airlines are registering more bookings. American Airlines and United Airlines stocks rose 8.3% and 7.7%, respectively. Delta was up 2.3% and Alaska Air Group was up 5.8%.

MGM Resorts – Hotels and gaming stocks rose roughly 5.1% after investment firm Jefferies MGM upgraded to buy from the hold. The company cited reasons for optimism that the prospects for travel to Las Vegas improved and the rise in online gambling.

Unity Software – Unity Software’s shares rose 3.8% after Goldman Sachs began backing the video game stock with a buy recommendation known as a “design platform for the masses.” The Wall Street company has given Unity a target price of $ 126 per share, up nearly 20% from its opening price of $ 105.70 per share.

Gap – The retailer’s shares rose 4.7% after Wells Fargo raised its target for the stock to a street high of $ 40, up about 30% above where stocks closed on Friday. The company “appears extremely well positioned for market share gains this year, Athleta has a significant runway for further growth, and the Gap brand is green with its brand health initiatives,” Wells Fargo wrote in a statement to customers.

SpaceX prepares for Air Pressure check of Starlink satellite tv for pc web

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is preparing to further test its Starlink satellite internet in a demonstration for the US Air Force, the company said in a recent inquiry to the Federal Communications Commission.

“SpaceX is trying to make minor changes to its experimental approval for additional testing activities with the federal government,” the company wrote on Thursday in a message to the FCC.

“The tests are designed to demonstrate the ability to send and receive information about (1) two stationary ground locations and (2) an aircraft in one location, and would include these (3) limited tests from a moving vehicle on the ground” said SpaceX.

Starlink is the company’s capital-intensive project to build an interconnected internet network of thousands of satellites, known in the aerospace industry as a Constellation, designed to deliver high-speed internet to consumers around the world.

SpaceX announced that it is partnering with Ball Aerospace, a defense and space company that will provide the antennas needed to connect Starlink satellites to an aircraft, for this test.

SpaceX found that Ball specifically manufactures “compliant antennas for tactical aircraft” – that is, military jets.

Musk’s company also found the Starlink test is being conducted as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (DEUCSI) program, a $ 9.7 million contract for the Ball in August received. SpaceX highlighted that the FCC previously approved Starlink experimental tests, including previous Air Force tests dating back to early 2018.

“The commission previously granted SpaceX experimental clearance for activities conducted with the federal government to demonstrate SpaceX’s capability [non-geostationary orbit] System for sending and receiving information between fixed locations on the ground and airborne ground stations on board moving aircraft, “the company said in its filing with the FCC.

SpaceX, Ball Aerospace, and the Air Force Research Laboratory did not respond to CNBC’s requests for comment.

Upcoming tests

The Air Force experiment begins with ground tests near SpaceX’s Starlink manufacturing facilities in Redmond, Washington. The test for a “surface-to-air scenario” will then be relocated to Edwards Air Force Base in California.

“An antenna terminal is being built into an aircraft. SpaceX is designing a special installation kit that consists of mechanical plates for the low-profile antennas and a windproof fairing to reduce the impact on the aircraft for this installation,” SpaceX said in the FCC filing.

While SpaceX has not identified a target schedule for the tests, the company anticipates “testing will take four to six months”.

Scientists to C.D.C.: Set Air Requirements for Workplaces Now

Almost a year after scientists showed that the coronavirus can be inhaled in tiny droplets called aerosols that linger in stagnant indoor air, more than a dozen experts are calling on the Biden government to take immediate action to stop the transmission of the virus in the air at high risk limit settings such as meat packing plants and prisons.

The 13 experts – including several who advised President Biden during the transition – urged the administration to mandate a combination of masks and environmental measures such as better ventilation to mitigate the risks in various workplaces.

On Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new guidelines for reopening schools, but quickly switched to improved ventilation as a precaution. It was only in July that the World Health Organization admitted that the virus could linger in the air in overcrowded indoor spaces after 239 experts publicly urged the organization to do so.

In a letter to the administration, scientists explained detailed evidence of airborne transmission of the virus. It has become even more urgent for the government to take action now, the experts said due to the slow vaccine rollout, the threat of more contagious variants of the virus already circulating in the United States and the high rate of Covid-19 infections and deaths, despite one recent fall in cases.

“It’s time to stop pussy shooting because the virus is mostly airborne,” said Linsey Marr, aerosol expert at Virginia Tech.

“If we properly acknowledge this and implement the right recommendations and guidance, this is our chance to end the pandemic in the next six months,” she added. “If we don’t do that, it could very well drag on.”

The letter was delivered to Jeffrey D. Zients, Coordinator of the Biden Administration’s Covid-19 Response, on Monday. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, Director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases.

The letter urged the CDC to recommend the use of high quality masks such as N95 respirators to protect workers at high risk of infection. At present, health care workers rely mostly on surgical masks, which are not as effective against aerosol transmission of the virus.

Many workers susceptible to infection are black people who have borne the brunt of the epidemic in the United States, the experts noted.

Mr Biden has directed the occupational health and safety agency, which sets workplace requirements, to issue temporary emergency standards for Covid-19 by March 15, including those for ventilation and masks.

However, OSHA will only prescribe standards that are supported by the CDC, said David Michaels, an epidemiologist at George Washington University and one of the signatories.

(Dr. Michaels ran OSHA during the Obama administration; the agency has not had a permanent leader since his departure.)

“Until the CDC makes some changes, OSHA will have difficulty changing the recommendations as it understands that government must be consistent,” said Dr. Michaels. “And CDC has always been considered the lead infectious disease agency.”

Public health authorities, including the WHO, have been slow to recognize the importance of aerosols in the spread of the coronavirus. It wasn’t until October that the CDC realized that the virus could be in the air at times, after an enigmatic series of events where a description of how the virus had spread appeared on the agency’s website, then disappeared, and reappeared two weeks later.

However, the Agency’s recommendations on workplace accommodation did not reflect this change.

At the start of the pandemic, the CDC said health care workers didn’t need N95 respirators and could even wear headscarves to protect themselves. Face coverings were also not recommended for the rest of the population.

The agency has since revised these recommendations. It was recently recommended that you wear two masks or improve the fit of their surgical masks to protect yourself from the virus.

“But they’re not talking about why you need a better fitting mask,” said Dr. Donald Milton, aerosol expert at the University of Maryland. “They recognize the importance of inhaling it and how it is transmitted, yet they don’t say it clearly on their various web pages.”

The agency recommends surgical masks for health care workers and says that N95 respirators are only needed during medical procedures that generate aerosols, such as certain types of surgery.

However, many studies have shown that health care workers who have no direct contact with Covid-19 patients are also at high risk of infection and should wear good quality respirators, said Dr. Celine Gounder, an infectious disease specialist at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York and an advisor to Mr. Biden during the transition.

“The CDC has not emphasized the risk of aerosol transmission enough,” said Dr. Gounder. “Unfortunately, concerns about the offer continue to cloud the discussion.”

Many hospitals still expect their staff to reuse N95 masks as recommended by the agency to reuse when supplies are low. However, since the masks are no longer in short supply, the agency should change its recommendations, said Dr. Gounder.

“We really need to stop this approach of reusing and decontaminating N95,” she added. “We are one year this year and that is really not acceptable.”

At least hospitals are usually well ventilated, so healthcare workers are protected in other ways, the experts said. In meat packers, prisons, buses, or grocery stores where workers have been exposed to the virus for long periods of time, the CDC does not recommend high-quality respiratory equipment or advocate improvements to ventilation.

“When you go to other jobs, that notion that aerosol transfer is important is virtually unknown,” said Dr. Michaels. For example, in food processing plants, a refrigerated environment and lack of fresh air are ideal conditions for the virus to thrive. However, the industry has not taken any safety measures to minimize the risk, he added.

Instead, employers follow the CDC’s recommendations for physical removal and cleaning of surfaces.

The recent emergence of more contagious variants makes it imperative for the CDC to address airborne transmission of the virus, said Dr. Marr from Virginia Tech. Germany, Austria and France are now mandating N95 respirators or other high quality masks in public transport and shops.

Dr. Marr was one of the experts who wrote to WHO last summer asking for airborne transmission recognition. She didn’t expect to be in a similar position again so many months later. She said, “It feels like Groundhog Day.”

U.S. to Require Unfavourable Virus Assessments From Worldwide Air Passengers

Before boarding any flights, all international passengers traveling to the United States must first demonstrate a negative coronavirus test under a new federal policy that comes into effect Jan. 26.

“Testing doesn’t eliminate all risks,” said Dr. Robert R. Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a statement describing the new policy.

“However, when combined with staying at home and taking everyday precautions like wearing masks and social distancing, travel can become safer, healthier and more responsible by reducing its spread on airplanes, airports and travel destinations.”

Dr. Redfield is expected to sign the contract with the new rules on Tuesday.

The new policy stipulates that all passengers, regardless of vaccination status, must receive a test for current infections within three days prior to departure for the United States and must provide written documentation of their test results or proof of recovery from Covid. 19th

Evidence of immunization won’t be enough as the vaccines have been shown to only prevent serious diseases, said Jason McDonald, a spokesman for the CDC-vaccinated people, could theoretically still be infected and transmit the virus on a flight.

The agency will not require any further testing in the three months following a positive test, as long as the traveler has no symptoms. In this situation, a passenger may travel with documentation of the positive test result and a letter from a health care provider or public health officer stating that the traveler has now been cleared for travel.

Airlines must confirm the negative test result for all passengers or documentation of recovery before boarding. If a passenger fails to provide evidence of a negative test or recovery, or fails to take a test, the airline must refuse to board the passenger, the agency said.

“Tests before and after travel are an important layer in order to slow down the introduction and spread of Covid-19,” said a statement by the officials. “With the US already in the surge status, the passenger testing requirement will help slow the spread of the virus while we work to vaccinate the American public.”

The policy expands on a similar rule introduced in late December that requires travelers from the UK to prove a negative result on a virus test. The Trump administration introduced this restriction after reports that a more contagious variant of the coronavirus had become the source of most infections in much of this country.

This variant has now been discovered in several American states and, according to scientists, is likely to have spread even more. However, the United States genetically sequences only a tiny fraction of its virus samples – too few to give an accurate estimate of the spread of the variant in that country.

    • antibody: A protein produced by the immune system that can recognize and attach to certain types of viruses, bacteria or other invaders.
    • Antibody test / serology test: A test that detects antibodies specific to the coronavirus. About a week after the coronavirus infects the body, antibodies start appearing in the blood.     • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): Scientists use PCR to make millions of copies of genetic material in a sample. With the help of PCR tests, researchers can detect the coronavirus even when it is scarce.
    • Viral load: The amount of virus in a person’s body. In people infected with the coronavirus, viral loads can peak before symptoms, if any.

The White House coronavirus task force and federal agencies, including the CDC, have been debating the expanded requirements for weeks.

The CDC currently recommends that all air travelers, including those flying within the United States, be tested one to three days prior to travel and again three to five days after travel is complete.

Many airlines offer optional tests for passengers, but only mandate them if the destinations so require. But last week a group representing major U.S. airlines endorsed a policy requiring all passengers to be tested.

In a statement, United Airlines welcomed the move, saying testing was “the key to opening up international borders”.

“United already has procedures in place to comply with similar regulations for international jurisdictions and we will plan to expand them in light of this new mandate,” the airline said in a statement.

“In addition, United is actively working to introduce new technologies and processes to make these test requirements easier to navigate for both our employees and our customers.”

What to Know Concerning the Boeing 737-500 Sriwijaya Air Airplane Crash

The crash of an airplane in Indonesia with more than 60 people is a difficult time for aviation giant Boeing. Its reputation was marred by years of investigations into fatal crashes.

While authorities are still investigating the cause, the plane that crashed near the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Saturday was a 26-year-old 737-500, a workhorse model with a good safety record. The aircraft at the center of the Boeing crisis was the 737 Max, a later version with flawed anti-stall software that led to two fatal crashes.

Here’s what you should know about the Boeing plane crashing in Indonesia.

It is unclear what caused the crash. Sriwijaya Air Flight 182, which flew to the town of Pontianak on the island of Borneo, took off after a delay in bad weather in heavy monsoon rains. It crashed more than 10,000 feet in less than a minute, according to tracking site Flightradar24.

Indonesia, an archipelago nation with thousands of islands, is heavily dependent on air traffic. Although the country has a long history of air accidents, Sriwijaya Air has not had a single fatal crash since it opened in 2003.

The plane involved in the Sriwijaya Air crash, which lost contact shortly after taking off from Jakarta on Saturday, was a Boeing 737-500, a proven model developed in the 1980s, and not the one in trouble Accidental airliner 737 Max, which landed on the ground after fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019.

The aircraft that was involved in the crash on Saturday is an earlier model of the 737 and has been in service for 26 years. It was previously flown by Continental Airlines and United Airlines before being delivered to Sriwijaya Air in 2012, according to the Airfleets’ online database.

The 737-500 does not have the same crystal system as the 737 Max, which was triggered when another Indonesian flight, Lion Air Flight 610, crashed in 2018, killing all 189 people on board. The same system was blamed when a 737 Max crashed in Ethiopia in March 2019, killing 157 people.

These crashes forced the worldwide landing of the Max fleet and a crisis for Boeing. The company sacked its CEO and said last year that it would cost Max more than $ 18 billion to ground, a major blow even before the coronavirus pandemic hit the industry.

Last week the company agreed to pay $ 2.5 billion, including $ 500 million for a victim fund, to solve a criminal conspiracy charge to defraud the Federal Aviation Administration over the valuation of the 737 Max.

The troubled 737 Max flew again last month. American Airlines Flight 718 made the aircraft’s first commercial flight after the FAA lifted its basic order in November. Before they can fly again, the wiring and software of every 737 Max aircraft must be changed.

The 737-500 was introduced by Southwest Airlines with the purchase of 20 aircraft in 1987. The airline used the 122-capacity model to more efficiently travel longer routes with fewer passengers, Southwest corporate historian Richard West wrote in 2016. That demand fell as long-haul travel increased, and that of Southwest The last 737-500 flew in September 2016.

In the past the 737-500 was a safe aircraft. The series it belongs to, including the 737-300 and 737-400, has had 19 fatal accidents in more than three decades, or about one fatal accident for every four million departures, according to a 2019 Boeing report.

According to the Aviation Safety Network, four previous fatal accidents were recorded in 737-500, including accidents in South Korea in 1993, Tunisia in 2002, and Russia in 2008 and 2013.

Boeing manufactured 389s of the 737-500s before the model was discontinued. Up to 100 are used by smaller airlines around the world in countries like Afghanistan, Iran, Nigeria, Russia, and Ukraine, according to the tracking website Planespotters.net.

U.S. air journey hits pandemic excessive over New Yr’s

U.S. air traffic reached its highest level since mid-March on Saturday, fearing that the increase in vacation travel will lead to another spike in Covid-19 cases and deaths in the coming weeks.

Even as the coronavirus raged across the country, 1,192,881 people passed airport security checks on Saturday, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Air traffic is still declining significantly compared to previous years, but increased during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays despite warnings from health experts and elected officials to restrict travel and family gatherings.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Sunday that the pandemic could likely worsen over the next few weeks as the US has a delayed influence from vacation travel after Christmas.

“This is what happens. It’s terrible, it’s unfortunate, but it was predictable,” said Fauci, one of the country’s top infectious disease experts, during an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press.

December was the deadliest and most contagious month of the pandemic in the United States. According to the Johns Hopkins University, the country has an average of more than 2,600 deaths per day.

Three states have now also found cases of the new, more transmissible strain of coronavirus in people with no history of travel.

The general surgeon Dr. Jerome Adams on Sunday urged Americans to wear masks and social distancing to mitigate the projected surge in infections.

“What we do now is important,” Adams said during an interview on CNN. “If you’ve gathered outside of your household without a mask over the holidays, now is the time to take action.”

“You can still quarantine yourself. You can still get tested knowing that more than 50% of the spread is now in asymptomatic people,” he added.

An Air Canada Boeing 737 Max ferry flight to Montreal was diverted earlier this week due to an engine problem in Arizona, the airline said on Friday.

Pilots on Air Canada Flight 2358 received an engine alarm shortly after taking off from Marana, Arizona, Tuesday, the airline said. The airline had 737 Max jets stored there after the planes landed worldwide after two fatal crashes in March 2019.

“As part of normal operations in such situations, decided to turn an engine off,” and diverted to Tucson, Air Canada said. The flight carried three crew members and no passengers. The plane stays in Tucson.

Boeing declined to comment and referred questions to the airline.

The Belgian aviation site Aviation24.be said the aircraft had a “hydraulic low pressure indicator”. Air Canada did not immediately respond to further requests for comment.

US authorities lifted the ban on the aircraft last month after Boeing made changes to the software involved in both crashes and addressed other concerns. Canadian officials approved design changes to the aircraft last week.
