Shake Shack has ‘large plans for Asia’ because it expands in China, Macao

The New York burger chain Shake Shack has “big plans for Asia,” said the CEO as the company embarks on a regional expansion drive.

Southern China and Macau are top priority for new branches – with locations in Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Macau’s casino resort The Londoner Randy Garutti, set to open in the coming months, told CNBC on Thursday.

Singapore and Beijing are also preparing for new store openings, according to the company’s website.

Our business in Asia has been incredibly robust.

The CEO said the rollout responds to strong demand over the past year and will cement Asia as “one of the most important positions” in the company.

“Our business in Asia has been incredibly robust,” Garutti told Street Signs.

“We opened in Shanghai. Even last year, due to the pandemic, we opened in Beijing in August. We now have Macau and the south in our sights, starting in Shenzhen.”

Overall, the company plans to open 35 to 40 new locations worldwide in the 2021 financial year. Another 45 to 50 new openings will be added in 2022. Garutti didn’t say how many of them would be in Asia.

Shake Shack already has at least 48 locations in Asia, including Japan, South Korea and the Philippines.

Garutti said the brand will continue to work with Maxim’s Caterers in Hong Kong to facilitate its rollout in Greater China.

He insisted that customers would continue to enjoy the classic taste of Shake Shack, but added that specialty shakes, such as Shenzhen and Macau, as well as localized artwork would be offered in some new locations.

“People want us to be Shake Shack from New York,” Garutti said. “They don’t want us to change the menu. But we’re finding ways to have these little cameos.”

India’s second wave of coronavirus infection is showing no signs of slowing.

The South Asian country reported more than 200,000 new cases and more than 1,000 deaths in a 24-hour period, according to the Ministry of Health. Most new infections are reported in a handful of states, including the western state of Maharashtra, which is home to India’s financial capital, Mumbai.

Government data also suggests that more states are seeing an upward trend in reported cases that have increased since February. The death rate is also rising as hospitals are under pressure, including the number of beds available. For example, a medical association in Gujarat state has reportedly asked the government to ensure 100% oxygen supply to hospitals treating Covid-19 patients.

India still has a relatively high rate of recovery.

Since the beginning of April, India has reported more than 1.9 million new cases and over 10,600 deaths, according to CNBC’s calculations of Health Department data. Between April 1 and April 7, India reported more than 652,000 cases. That number has almost doubled in the past eight days.

Earlier this week, India overtook Brazil to become the second worst infected country after the US just months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly declared victory over Covid-19.

Maharashtra lockdown

On Wednesday evening, India’s richest state was suspended until May 1 to break the chain of transmission. Maharashtra is considered to be the epicenter of the second wave of infections in India.

The guidelines issued by the Prime Minister of Maharashtra said that only essential services – including public transportation and food – would be operational between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. local time and people would not be allowed into public spaces without valid reason.

The central government has reportedly attributed the second wave to people’s lack of commitment to wearing masks and practicing safe distancing.

Police officer Kim Potter faces manslaughter cost

Kim Potter, the Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Daunte Wright, was arrested Wednesday morning for second degree manslaughter.

The 48-year-old has bailed $ 100,000 and is due to appear in court on Thursday.

Potter’s arrest came the day after she resigned from the Brooklyn Center Police Department and three days after she shot the 20-year-old black man. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Wright’s death, while fleeing a police station, exacerbated already high tensions in and around Minneapolis over the murder trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd last year.

Kim Potter, a 26-year-old veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, poses for a booking photo in Hennepin County Jail for driving 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a traffic obstruction on April 14, 2021 in Minneapolis, Minnesota fatally shot.

Body camera video footage of Potter during Sunday’s confrontation suggests she believed she pulled out a taser as she pointed and fired the gun at Wright after he turned away from another officer who tried to get him next to his Handcuffed SUV.

Wright had been stopped by police in Brooklyn Center because license plates had expired and an air freshener was hanging on his rearview mirror.

Police then attempted to arrest Wright after learning that he was wanted on a pending no-show arrest warrant in a criminal case accused of carrying a gun without permission and escaped police in June to be.

Potter screamed desperately and repeatedly “Taser!” before shooting Wright as he sat in the driver’s seat of his vehicle after pulling away from the other officer.

Potter’s Taser is colored pale yellow in contrast to their black 9mm Glock pistol.

Washington County, Minnesota District Attorney Pete Orput announced that Potter would be charged with Wright’s death.

She was arrested Wednesday morning at the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Authorities said she would be detained in Hennepin County Jail and the Washington County Attorney’s Office would bring charges later on Wednesday.

Authorities said the investigation into the shooting is still active.

Wright’s older brother told NBC News that the family had hoped Potter would be charged with a more serious crime.

“I’m not very happy about this, but I will take every win I can get right now,” said Dallas Bryant, Wright’s 23-year-old brother.

A group of lawyers representing the Wright family said in a statement, “While we appreciate the District Attorney seeking justice for Daunte, no conviction of the Wright family can return loved ones.”

“This was not an accident. This was a deliberate, deliberate and unlawful use of force,” the lawyers said.

Potter, who served at the Brooklyn Center for 26 years and previously served as president of the police union, has retained a defense attorney, Earl Gray, according to the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association. Gray did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gray is also representing former Minneapolis Police Officer Thomas Lane, one of two other ex-officers on trial separately from Chauvin on lesser charges for the death of Floyd, who was black like Wright.

Floyd’s assassination by Chauvin sparked nationwide protests against police misconduct against minority suspects and called for a major reform of police practices.

Wright’s death sparked protests in the Brooklyn Center and Minneapolis.

John Naisbitt, Enterprise Guru and Writer of ‘Megatrends,’ Dies at 92

His marriage to Mrs. Senior ended in divorce, as did his second to Patricia Aburdene. He and his daughter are survived by his third wife, Doris (Dinklage) Naisbitt; his sons James, David and John; another daughter, Nana Naisbitt; a stepdaughter, Nora Rosenblatt; 11 grandchildren and two stepchildren.

Running out of money after just two semesters, Mr Naisbitt dropped out of college with his first child en route to write executive speeches at Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY

He and his family moved to Chicago in 1957, where he worked in public relations. He worked in Washington between 1963 and 1966, first as assistant to the director of the National Education Commission, then as assistant to the secretary for health, education and social affairs.

He first developed his method for trend analysis while on a contract to evaluate the effects of various Great Society programs under President Lyndon B. Johnson. A fan of American history, he had read Civil War books by Bruce Catton, who relied heavily on contemporary newspapers to get a feel for the mood of the country during the war.

“I went to a newsstand and bought about 50 newspapers out of town,” he told The Christian Science Monitor in 1982. “And I was absolutely stunned by what I learned in three hours about what was going on in America.”

He called it “content analysis” and after returning to Chicago he put it into practice with his first company, Urban Research Corporation. Long before computers did this job almost instantly, Mr. Naisbitt employed a small army of analysts to read dozens of newspapers daily and cut stories of urban protests, crime, and campus rioting, which he relied on to produce reports for nonprofits and writing to corporate clients.

After the end of his first marriage and the loss of his company, he moved back to Washington in the mid-1970s and opened another similar company. It also failed and resulted in bankruptcy filing in 1977.

What the Coronavirus Variants Imply for Testing

In January 2020, just a few weeks after the first Covid-19 cases appeared in China, the full genome of the new coronavirus was published online. Using this genomic sequence, the scientists developed a wide range of diagnostic tests for the virus.

But the virus has mutated since then. And with the development of the coronavirus, the test landscape has also evolved. The emergence of new variants has generated great interest in the development of tests for certain virus mutations and concerns about the accuracy of some existing tests.

“With this Covid diagnostic, we had a time crisis, we had to get something out of it,” said Lorraine Lillis, scientific program manager at PATH, a global non-profit health organization that has been tracking coronavirus tests. “It usually takes a long time to diagnose and we would normally challenge it with multiple variations.” She added, “And we do it, but we do it in real time.”

The Food and Drug Administration has warned that new mutations in the coronavirus could make some tests less effective. And last week, PATH launched two online dashboards to monitor how certain variants can affect the performance of existing diagnostic tests.

So far, scientists have agreed that there is no evidence that the known worrying variants will cause tests to fail completely. “The tests are working very, very well today,” said Mara Aspinall, an expert in biomedical diagnostics at Arizona State University.

But Manufacturers and regulators need to remain vigilant to keep up with an ever-changing virus, scientists say. When variants elude detection, it can be of concern not only to individual patients who may not receive the treatment they need, but also to public health.

If a test misses someone infected with a variant, that person may not realize that they need to be isolated. “And then that person must not be quarantined, circulated in the community and possibly passed this variant on to others,” said Gary Schoolnik, doctor and infectious disease expert at Stanford University and chief medical officer of Visby Medical, a diagnostics company that does a coronavirus test. “And so, if variants are missing, a diagnostic test can actually promote the spread of this variant.”

Molecular tests, such as the widely used polymerase chain reaction or PCR test, are used to detect specific sequences of the coronavirus genome. If mutations occur in these “target” sequences, the tests may no longer be able to detect the virus, leading to false negative results.

“You could get into a situation where you were unlucky when you decided to take your test and something came up that made your test less effective,” said Nathan Grubaugh, a virologist at Yale University.

The gene for the virus’s signature spike protein, known as the S gene, has been particularly susceptible to mutation, and tests targeting this gene may miss certain variants. For example, Thermo Fisher’s TaqPath test fails to detect the mutated S gene of the B.1.1.7 variant, which was first identified in the UK and is now rapidly spreading in the US.

However, the test is not only based on the S gene. It has three goals, yet it can still provide accurate results by detecting two more sections of the coronavirus genome.

Only 1.3 percent of molecular tests are based solely on an S-gene target. This is based on calculations made by Rachel West, a postdoctoral fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. The rest either target more stable regions of the genome that are less likely to mutate, or have multiple target sequences, making them less prone to failure. “It is very unlikely that you will get mutations in all,” said Dr. Lillis.

Updated

April 14, 2021, 9:50 p.m. ET

The FDA has listed four different molecular tests “the performance of which could be affected by the variants,” but states that the tests should continue to work. Three of the tests have multiple objectives; A fourth can be a little less sensitive if the virus has a particular mutation and is present in very small amounts. (The four tests are the TaqPath Covid-19 Combo Kit, the Linea Covid-19 Assay Kit, the Xpert Xpress and Xpert Omni SARS-CoV-2, and the Accula SARS-CoV-2 test.)

“We don’t think these four tests are significantly affected,” said Dr. Tim Stenzel, who heads the FDA’s In Vitro Diagnostic and Radiological Health Office. “We published this information out of caution and transparency.”

Antigen tests are less sensitive than molecular tests, but they are usually cheaper and faster and are widely used in coronavirus screening programs. These tests detect specific proteins on the outside of the virus. Some genetic mutations could alter the structure of these proteins and allow them to evade detection.

Most antigen tests target the nucleocapsid protein. The gene that codes for this protein, known as the N gene, is more stable and mutated than the S gene, and the FDA has not listed any antigen tests as of concern. “We didn’t find any that hoisted a red flag, nor have we received any reports,” said Dr. Stenzel.

However, experts note that not every test maker discloses the specific sequences their tests target and the virus continues to mutate. “There is no evidence that any particular molecular assay, or even an antigen test, completely misses the boat for detection.” said Neha Agarwal, the assistant director of diagnostics at PATH. “But things will change.”

The FDA continues to monitor the situation and weekly reviews the coronavirus sequence databases to see if the virus is developing in a way that may help avoid diagnostic tests. “We are very vigilant,” said Dr. Stenzel. “And we will stay vigilant.”

As the variants spread, researchers are also working to develop and improve tests to detect them. At the moment, identifying a variant is typically a two-step process. First, a standard coronavirus test, such as a PCR test, is used to determine if the virus is present. If the test is positive, a sample will be sent for genomic sequencing.

“These two tasks are currently performed in two separate workflows,” said Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, developmental biologist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. “This means more time, work and resources.”

Many researchers are currently working on integrated solutions – tests that can be used to determine if someone is infected with the virus and whether they may have a particular variant.

For example, Dr. Izpisua Belmonte and colleague Mo Li, a stem cell biologist at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia, described a new test method that can be identified in a recent article Mutations in up to five different regions of the coronavirus genome.

And Dr. Grubaugh and his colleagues have developed a PCR test that can be used to detect certain combinations of mutations that characterize three questionable variants: B.1.1.7; B.1,351, which was first discovered in South Africa; and P.1, first found in Brazil. (The work has not yet been published in a scientific journal.)

Dr. Grubaugh said researchers in Brazil, South Africa and elsewhere are already using the tests to sift through a mountain of coronavirus samples and identify those that should be prioritized for full genomic sequencing. “The main interest of our group is to improve genomic surveillance through sequencing, especially in areas with limited resources,” said Dr. Grubaugh. “If you want to know if there are variants, you need a way of triage.”

A number of companies are also starting to publish coronavirus tests that they say can differentiate between certain variants, although these are for research purposes only. It is “infinitely more difficult” to create a test that can definitely diagnose someone with a particular variant, said Dr. Grubaugh.

Similar mutations come in different variants, making it difficult to differentiate between them. The mutations of interest change with the virus, and sequencing remains the best way to get a complete picture of the virus.

But tests that can look for specific mutations could be an important public health tool, Ms. Agarwal said: “These newer diagnoses that examine the variants will be really crucial to understanding the epidemiology of the virus and I think our next generation plan the efforts against it. “

Maldives to supply holidaymakers vaccines on arrival

The Maldives will soon be offering vaccinations to visitors upon arrival. This is part of their tripartite initiative to revitalize the country’s hard-hit travel sector, said the tourism minister.

The “3V” strategy, which encourages tourists to “visit the country, vaccinate and vacation,” will provide a “more convenient” way to visit the country, Abdulla Mausoom told CNBC on Wednesday.

Currently, visitors to the Maldives must present a negative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and proof of hotel booking to gain entry. Mausoom said the country’s health protection agency will “very soon – maybe even this week” make an announcement of unrestricted entry to vaccinated arrivals.

The Maldives, an archipelago state in South Asia known for its tropical beaches and pristine waters, is heavily dependent on its tourism industry. Around 67% of the gross domestic product (GDP) comes directly and indirectly from the sector.

The Minister of Tourism would not be pressured into a timetable for introducing visitor vaccination. He noted that the government’s priority is to ensure that all resident populations get their first and second shots first.

However, once that process is complete, the country will be ready to vaccinate arrivals, he said.

I don’t think the supply in the Maldives is a problem because our population is relatively small.

Abdulla Mausoom

Minister of Tourism, Maldives

To date, according to Reuters’ vaccination tracker, around 53% of the approximately 530,000 inhabitants of the island state have received their first dose. Around 90% of frontline tourism workers have received their first dose, Mausoom said.

Mausoom didn’t say whether the comers are expected to pay for their shots, but he said supplies would not be an issue.

He said the country has received vaccine donations from India, China and the World Health Organization’s Covax program, which is designed to ensure vaccines are distributed fairly and equitably. The Maldives have also ordered additional supplies from Singapore, he said.

“I don’t think the supply in the Maldives is a problem because our population is relatively small,” said Mausoom. “The quota that we receive from the various organizations and friendly nations will also help.”

Mausoom said the tourism campaign is a necessary strategy to help the country meet its goal of 1.5 million tourist arrivals and 10 million overnight stays this year.

“If we achieve this year’s goal, we will still be short of the country’s needs,” he said. “Still, that’s a lot better than we expected at the end of 2020.”

Work – Working in the Maldives has become very trendy. You see very rich executives, executives of companies who come here and are based here.

Abdulla Mausoom

Minister of Tourism, Maldives

As early as this year, the Maldives received 350,000 arrivals as vacationers – mostly from nearby India – take advantage of the country’s limited entry regulations.

In the meantime, guests are booking longer stays, with many using the islands as a destination for so-called “workations” – or a working vacation. Mausoom said he was confident it would stay that way as tourists stay to receive both their first and second doses.

“Work – work is getting very trendy in the Maldives,” he said. “You see very rich executives, executives of companies, who come here and are based here.”

25 Free Performances Come to Bryant Park Beginning in June

Once guests arrive at the park, they will have their temperatures checked and be shown to their seats, which will be provided with space for social distancing. The park has no plans to get vaccinations or negative virus tests, but is considering them as options, according to Dan Fishman, director of public events for the park.

Other organizations participating in Bryant Park’s series this summer include Elisa Monte Dance, Harlem Stage, National Sawdust, New York Chinese Cultural Center, Limón Dance Company, and Greenwich House Music School. New York City Opera singers will perform a Pride concert on June 18th.

Many groups and institutions have been downsized or completely cocooned since last year.

“We were in hibernation,” said Tom Wirtshafter, the city hall president, who ran more than 60 virtual programs during the pandemic but, like most venues, had to leave most of the staff.

City Hall, which opened in 1921, will wrap up Bryant Park’s season on September 20 with a 100th anniversary event attended by Chris Thile, the mandolin player whose eclectic tastes range from bluegrass to creek.

Tiffany Rea-Fisher, the artistic director of Elisa Monte Dance, who also curates dance performances in the park, said her company only played twice in the past year. It will perform with the Paul Taylor Dance Company on August 20, and Rea-Fisher said it was not easy to find other dance groups to prepare.

“Finding companies that were ready in terms of perseverance was a challenge,” she said. “You don’t want to bring dancers back after a year and let them do a performance – it’s all about injuries.”

Xpeng Motors launches P5 Lidar electrical automotive to rival Tesla in China

GUANGZHOU, China – Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng Motors on Wednesday unveiled the P5, a sedan with new self-driving features that is set to lead the way in the highly competitive Chinese auto market.

The P5, Xpeng’s third production model and second sedan after the P7, adds another competitor to Tesla’s Model 3 in China’s increasingly crowded field of electric car manufacturers.

The Chinese company, a rival of local players Nio and Li Auto, announced that it will release its prices at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 19th.

In an interview with CNBC on Wednesday, Xinzhou Wu, vice president of autonomous driving at Xpeng, said the price of the P5 will be lower than the P7.

“In this price range with the functions that we have built into the car, it will be very convincing for our customers,” he said.

Xpeng Motors will unveil the P5 sedan on April 14, 2021 at an event in Guangzhou, China. The P5 is the third series model from Xpeng and has what is known as Lidar technology.

Arjun Kharpal | CNBC

The P7 starts at 229,900 yuan ($ 35,192) after subsidies. By comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 starts at 249,900 yuan in China.

Wu said the P5 will be rolled out to customers in China in the third or fourth quarter of this year. Xpeng has also expanded into Norway, its first international market. Wu said the company would expand its presence in Northern Europe and eventually the P5 would be rolled out there. He didn’t give any schedules when this might happen.

Driverless technology

Xpeng has tried to drive the advancement of its self-driving features to differentiate itself from its competitors.

The P5 is equipped with what is known as lidar or light detection and ranging technology. Lidar systems send out lasers that can bounce back and measure distances. These returning rays are processed by an algorithm to create a three-dimensional representation of the surrounding objects – a key technology for autonomous vehicles to understand their surroundings.

Xpeng claims that lidar can help the P5 differentiate between pedestrians, cyclists and scooters, as well as road works – even at night and in low light.

On Wednesday, the Chinese automaker also released a new version of XPILOT, its so-called advanced driver assistance System (ADAS). This refers to a system with some autonomous functions, but for which a driver is still required.

XPILOT 3.5 has an updated version of a feature called Navigation Guided Pilot or NGP that allows users to autonomously perform tasks such as changing lanes or overtaking cars. Some of these functions are working for the first time on city streets. Previously, NGP was designed for highways only.

Xpeng’s XPILOT is an attempt to compete with Tesla’s own ADAS system called Autopilot, as well as other competitors like Nio with its Nio Pilot.

“In P7 we introduced NGP … only on freeways. However, freeway driving is only about 10% of people’s driving time. Getting the technology and ability to cities to do the function is very important Chinese people to make more user-friendly and more convincing customers, “said Wu.

In the city, Wu said the situation is getting “exponentially” and cited challenges to ensure the car can accurately and reliably detect objects in its path. “We believe with Lidar … it will help us achieve our goal much faster and give us an edge over our competitors.”

The competition is heating up

China’s electric car market is expected to pick up this year. According to research firm Canalys, 1.9 million units are expected to be sold, an increase of 51% over the previous year.

Various government incentives such as subsidies have made China the largest electric car market in the world. With that, some startups like Xpeng, Nio and Li Auto have grown quickly.

However, these players are competing against traditional automakers who are honing their electric vehicle capabilities, as well as other tech companies entering the fray.

We’re definitely one step ahead, you know, compared to most of our competitors. So we’re pretty confident that we can win this race with more newbies in this area.

Xinzhou Wu

Vice President for Autonomous Driving, Xpeng

Chinese search giant Baidu has teamed up with Geely to create a standalone electric car company, while smartphone giant Xiaomi announced plans to start an electric car business.

Last year, Xpeng delivered 27,041 vehicles, more than double that in 2019. In comparison, the Tesla Model 3 alone sold more than 137,000 units in China in 2020.

Wu said Xpeng developed a lot of technology that he believes will give the company an edge.

“We’re definitely one step ahead, a few steps ahead, you know compared to most of our competitors. So we’re pretty confident that we can win this race with more newbies in the field,” Wu told CNBC.

“We believe that with this kind of focus on the Chinese market, the Chinese customers, the Chinese road conditions and also the various technologies that we are bringing together to better adapt the technology to the Chinese market, we have an advantage over Tesla the Chinese market. “

C.D.C. Panel Retains Pause on Use of J&J Vaccine, Weighing Dangers

“At the moment we believe these events are extremely rare, but we are also not sure we have heard of all possible cases as this syndrome may not be easily identified as being associated with the vaccine,” said Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, the CDC director said at a White House press conference about the pandemic on Wednesday.

During the panel discussion, experts noted that the “risk window” for the disease was still open among vaccine recipients and that new cases could arise as nearly 3.8 million people had received the shot in the past two weeks. In the six women, the strong coagulation developed within about two weeks after the shot.

Other experts advocated the dissemination of health information about how to diagnose and treat the condition so that it could spread awareness among doctors, emergency rooms, and those who had received the vaccine. An important point to note is that the blood-thinning heparin, a common treatment for blood clots, can be harmful to these patients and should not be used.

Officials also noted that because the blood clots were so severe, people with the disease needed treatment as soon as possible. Some patients needed invasive procedures to remove large blood clots from the blood vessels in their brain.

Several panel members reiterated that two other vaccines – from Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech – are available, neither of which are associated with the clotting problem. Continuing the hiatus would not stop most people in the US from getting vaccinated.

Speaking at the press conference, Jeffrey D. Zients, the White House pandemic coordinator, said the hiatus would not disrupt the momentum of the country’s vaccination campaign in general.

“In the short term, we expect some impact on the daily average as Johnson & Johnson locations and dates move to Moderna and Pfizer vaccines,” he said. “We have more than enough Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to continue or even accelerate the current rate of vaccination.”

Biden, Setting Afghanistan Withdrawal, Says ‘It Is Time to Finish the Endlessly Warfare’

Mr. Bush chose not to publicly question Mr. Biden’s decision.

“As he has maintained since leaving office, President Bush will refuse to comment on private phone calls or his successors,” said Freddy Ford, his chief of staff.

A number of Afghan governments failed to maintain control of large parts of the country for years after the first invasion. This is at the core of the American military’s “keep clear, build” strategy. While a number of Afghan leaders, backed by the United States and its allies, pledged to fight corruption, end the drug scourge and establish stable governance, all of these achievements have proven fragile at best.

Women have played a more prominent role in government, and girls have been trained to an extent not seen before the war began. However, the future of these achievements is in doubt if the Taliban gain more ground.

In a statement on Twitter, President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan said his country “respects the US decision and we will work with our US partners to ensure a smooth transition.” He added that his country’s security forces are “fully capable of defending its people”.

But privately, according to people who spoke to him, Mr. Ghani was annoyed about the American decision. He fears that this will encourage the Taliban and give them little to no incentive to stick to the terms of the deal they made with Mr. Trump a year ago. And many around Mr Ghani fear that his own government, whose influence has already waned, could fall if the Taliban decide to take the capital, Kabul.

“Just because we’re pulling out of Afghanistan doesn’t mean the war is over,” said Lisa Curtis, one of Trump’s top national security officials on Afghanistan. “It’s likely to get worse.”

Mr Biden is the first president to oppose the Pentagon’s recommendations that any withdrawal be “conditional,” meaning that security must be ensured on the ground before Americans withdraw. If military officials have argued for a long time, they would signal the Taliban to just wait for the Americans – after that they would offer little resistance to taking further control and possibly threatening Kabul.
