In a small clinical trial, an experimental Alzheimer’s drug slowed the rate at which patients lost the ability to think and care for themselves, drug maker Eli Lilly announced on Monday.

The drug donanemab, a monoclonal antibody, attaches to a small portion of the hard plaques in the brain, which are made up of a protein, amyloid, that is characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. The patients received the drug by infusion every four weeks.

Participants who received the drug had a 32 percent slowdown in the rate of decline compared to those who received a placebo. In six to twelve months, plaques were gone and stayed gone, said Dr. Daniel Skovronsky, scientific director of the company. At this point, the patients were no longer receiving any medication for the duration of the study – they were given a placebo instead.

The small study needs to be replicated, noted Dr. Michael Weiner, a leading Alzheimer’s researcher at the University of California at San Francisco. Even so, “this is big news,” he said. “This gives hope to patients and their families.”

The main side effect has been seen regularly in patients given experimental monoclonal antibodies to treat Alzheimer’s disease: an accumulation of fluid in the brain. It occurred in nearly 30 percent of patients, said Dr. Skovronsky, but most of them had no symptoms. The effect was seen on brain scans.

During the study, Eli Lilly started a second phase 2 study, Trailblazer 2, in the hope that the initial efforts would produce results. These results are expected in 2023.

Dr. Skovronsky said Eli Lilly will speak to the Food and Drug Administration and regulators in other countries about giving patients access to the drug.

“Sure, the dates are exciting,” he said. “But we have to see what the regulators say.”

For 25 years he has hoped for definitive evidence that the amyloid hypothesis is correct.

“This is what we’ve been waiting for,” said Dr. Skovronsky.

“We heard in the press that some people said, ‘OK, I’m waiting for all of my healthcare workers to be vaccinated. We have a vaccine intake of around 35%.’ I think it makes sense to expand this to other groups, Hahn said on Friday at an event organized by the Alliance for Health Policy. “I would strongly encourage states to be more expansive about who they can give the vaccine to.”

Democrats said the Trump administration should issue a “Comprehensive National Plan” that would include guidelines on vaccine delivery and assisting states with supplies and manpower to manage gunshots.

“In the absence of this long-overdue national plan, it is even more important that the Trump administration actively engage in state planning efforts in the coming days, identify sales and administrative challenges, and proactively address issues that arise in partnership with jurisdictions,” he wrote Legislator.

Supreme Court refuses quick action on last-ditch Trump election lawsuits

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected efforts by President Donald Trump and his allies to get the court to quickly review the challenges to President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory in the November election. The move effectively closed the door on the president’s final legal strategy to undo his defeat.

The court released an order in the morning denying expedited examination of lawsuits filed by Trump’s campaign against election process in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Similarly, it denied motions by conservative conspiracy theorists L. Lin Wood and Sidney Powell to expedite the contest of the Michigan and Georgia elections, as well as other lawsuits filed by Trump supporters.

The court’s action was widely awaited and was not accompanied by any statement or opinion, as is typical of such denials. No dissenting views were found by any of the court’s nine judges.

The court could theoretically still agree to accept cases related to the election, but would likely not hear arguments until October, well into Biden’s first year in office.

The judges returned from their winter break to meet for a private conference on Friday. The order list released on Monday is the first since the DC uprising last week, in which a crowd of Trump supporters tried to delay the confirmation of Biden’s victory over Trump in the electoral college.

The court had made it clear that it would not process the cases on the schedule Trump requested, even before the order was given.

In Trump v Boockvar, one of the cases that challenged the Pennsylvania election process, President’s attorney John Eastman wrote a December letter urging the court to open the case before January 6, when Congress met to complete the election college record.

Eastman wrote that if the court does not act before January 20, when Biden is inaugurated, “it will be impossible to fix the election results,” including the alleged ballots that were illegally cast under rules approved by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court were.

Trump has furiously denied his loss to Biden in a way unprecedented in modern US history.

On Monday, the Democrats unveiled an impeachment article in the House of Representatives based on his actions at a rally prior to the siege of the Capitol. He urged supporters to “fight” and his attorney, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, called for “trial” by fight. “

Powell, who has falsely claimed, among other things, that the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez was involved in a conspiracy to rig the 2020 competition, was presented with a 1.3 defamation suit on Friday by Dominion Voting Systems, a supplier of voting machines Billions of dollars occupied. The attorney, whom Trump reportedly cited as a potential special adviser to investigate electoral fraud, has not returned CNBC’s requests for comment.

Wood and Powell suspended their Twitter accounts last week while cracking down on the spread of lies related to the QAnon conspiracy theory.

The court also declined to expedite three cases filed by the Trump campaign – two contesting mail-in voting rules in Wisconsin and one contesting easing rules in Pennsylvania. These lawsuits argued that the changed rules increased the likelihood of election fraud.

While Trump has made an unfounded argument that there was widespread electoral fraud in the 2020 election, his Justice Department has stated that there is no evidence to support such claims. The Department of Homeland Security also denied claims that the elections were infiltrated by foreign governments.

The Supreme Court previously dismissed a number of election challenges, including earlier versions of some of the lawsuits it had dismissed for a quick review on Monday. In one of its most famous cases, the court dismissed a Texas state lawsuit in December aimed at undoing Biden’s victories in swing states of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

More than a dozen states and 120 GOP congressmen backed the Texas advance at the time. House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Called the lawsuit “electoral subversion that threatens our democracy”.

The Supreme Court rejection marks a coda for Trump’s long-standing hope that he can play the elections through the courts.

Ahead of Election Day, Trump predicted the Supreme Court would rule the competition and urged the Senate to bank his third candidate, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, in time.

During Barrett’s confirmation process, Democrats warned that the Conservative former federal appeals judge would side with the president who appointed them. Barrett refused to apologize on election cases but said she would take the concerns seriously as she weighed whether to do so.

Trump and his allies have lost more than 60 election lawsuits in court, according to a record by Democratic electoral lawyer Marc Elias.

The Trump campaign and the Biden transition team did not immediately return requests for comment.

Walmart said Monday that a fintech startup is making it with Ribbit Capital, one of the venture capital firms behind Robinhood.

The big box dealer did not disclose the name of the new company, nor did they indicate when their services would be available. The company will develop unique and affordable financial products for Walmart employees and customers.

Shares rose more than 2% after close of trading on Monday. Walmart’s market cap is $ 416.7 billion.

The fintech startup will be majority-owned by Walmart and its board of directors will include several company executives including CFO Brett Biggs and Walmart’s US CEO John Furner. It said it will also appoint independent industry experts to the board and may acquire or work with other fintech companies.

“For years, millions of customers have trusted Walmart not only to save money shopping from us, but also to help them manage their financial needs,” Furner said in a press release. “And they made it clear that they want more from us in the financial services sector.”

With more than 4,700 stores across the country, Walmart interacts with millions of customers each year – including some who have no relationship with a bank or financial advisor.

Six percent of adults have no checking, savings, or money market accounts, according to the Federal Reserve. About 16% are “under-banked,” which means they have a bank account, but also use alternative financial services products such as a money order. These Americans are more likely to turn to short-term solutions like a pawn shop or payday loan, which can result in additional fees or high interest fees.

Walmart already offers some financial services to customers. For example, it has Walmart MoneyCard, a prepaid debit card that customers can top up with money and use to make purchases. The card has some features that will promote money management or help people who may have poor credit ratings, such as: B. No overdraft fees, no monthly fee and no minimum balance requirement.

Hours after going offline on Monday, social media start-up Parler filed a lawsuit in federal court accusing Amazon of antitrust violations and calling for an injunction to prevent that the tech giant is blocking access to cloud computing services.

Amazon told Parler over the weekend that the service would be discontinued because “a steady increase in violent content” on the site indicated the company did not have a reliable process to prevent it from violating Amazon’s Terms of Service. Amazon said it would make sure Parler’s data is preserved so it can be migrated to a new hosting provider.

Millions of people turned to Parler after Twitter and Facebook banned President Trump following the Capitol uprising last week. Apple and Google kicked Parler out of their app stores later this week, although users who had already downloaded the app could still use it. However, the app relied on Amazon’s cloud computing technology.

Parler’s complaint was dated Sunday before Amazon suspended Parler. However, the lawsuit wasn’t filed with the court until Monday.

In the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western Washington District, Parler accused Amazon of terminating, rather than just banning, its account – and said it should have been given 30 days notice. It has also been argued that Amazon violated antitrust laws by teaming up with Twitter, a large Amazon customer, to start Parler just as it was gaining broader appeal. It said it had 12 million users and “expects millions more this week given the growth in recent days.”

Parler did not provide direct evidence that Amazon and Twitter coordinated the response. Instead, it cited a December press release announcing a multi-year strategic partnership between Amazon and Twitter, and cited Twitter’s own challenges in monitoring the content.

Parler said losing Amazon’s services would be a “death knell,” although other platforms popular with far-right and conspiracy theorists, such as Gab and 8chan, have managed to bounce back after being canceled by hosting providers.

David J. Groesbeck, a sole intellectual property attorney based in Olympia, Washington, filed the lawsuit on behalf of Parler. Amazon didn’t respond to an instant request for comment.
