As Virus Variants Unfold, ‘No One Is Protected Till Everybody Is Protected’

Republican senators current smaller Covid proposal

Senator Mitt Romney, a Republican from Utah, listens during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Iran-US relations on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, the United States, on Wednesday, October 16, 2019.

WASHINGTON – A group of 10 Republican Senators urged President Joe Biden to consider a smaller, alternative proposal for Covid-19 aid as his administration works to pass a $ 1.9 trillion package, to deal with the economic consequences caused by the pandemic.

In a letter to Biden on Sunday, Sens. Susan Collins from Maine, Mitt Romney from Utah, Rob Portman from Ohio, Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and five other lawmakers said they would announce their legislative proposals on Monday.

“We recognize your demands for unity and would like to work in good faith with your administration to meet the health, economic and social challenges of the Covid crisis,” wrote the senators.

“We believe that with your support, Congress can once again work out a relief package that will provide meaningful and effective relief to the American people and get us on the road to recovery,” the group wrote, asking to meet with Biden on the subject to discuss the proposed law in detail.

The senators said their version of the Covid relief package is “providing more targeted assistance” to Americans in greatest need. The proposed legislation provides a total of $ 160 billion for vaccine development and distribution, testing and tracking, treatment, and other vital supplies.

The senators set the following details of their plan:

  • An additional round of economic impact payments for families in need of help most, including their dependent children and adults.
  • Extends the federal government’s improved unemployment benefits to the current level.
  • Funds food aid entirely to help families in trouble.
  • Additional resources to support small businesses and their employees through the Paycheck Protection Program and the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program.
  • Funds funds for the safe opening of schools and for childcare.
  • Dedicated $ 4 billion to strengthen behavioral health and substance abuse services.

On Sunday, Portman told CNN’s State of the Union that the proposal would be a leaner version of what was put forward by the Biden administration.

“It would be less than $ 1.9 [trillion] Because a lot of what the government has planned has nothing to do with Covid-19, “Portman said.” As an example of the direct payments, we think they should be much more targeted, “he added.

Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, told MSNBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday that the White House had received the letter and was open to discussing the proposed legislation.

“The president has said repeatedly that he is open to ideas wherever they may come to improve the approach to actually dealing with this crisis. What he is uncompromising is the need to quickly take a comprehensive approach here,” Deese said .

“We have been working with members of Congress from both parties and in both Houses for the past week or two. We will continue to do so,” he added.

Deese also told CNN’s State of the Union that the government was ready to negotiate the stimulus checks.

CNBC’s Tucker Higgins and Emma Newburger contributed to this report from New York.

Trump Raised $255.four Million in eight Weeks as He Sought to Overturn Election Consequence

President Donald J. Trump and the Republican Party raised $ 255.4 million in the more than eight weeks following the November 3 election, new federal records show, as he attempted to undermine the results on unsubstantiated fraud allegations to reverse.

Mr Trump’s strongest fundraising came immediately after the election, for example after major media organizations announced that Joseph R. Biden Jr. won on November 7th. Yet even when Mr Trump and his legal team lost the case afterwards – in places like the Supreme Court – his donors continued to give repeats. From November 24th through the end of the year, more than two million contributions went to Mr. Trump, the Republican National Committee and their joint accounts.

The donations were posted over the weekend on a Federal Election Commission filing by WinRed, the digital platform that Republicans use to process online donations. Mr. Trump’s campaign committee, joint committees with the RNC, and the new political action committee he formed after the elections, Save America, will be filing additional information on Sunday with more details on spending and fundraising.

Mr Trump had previously announced that he and the RNC raised $ 207.5 million in the first month after the election. The new records show that his fundraising fell sharply in December compared to November, particularly after December 14, the day the electoral college officially cast its ballot to make Mr Biden the 46th president of the nation, and the reality possibly. Some of Mr. Trump’s supporters spoke of the futility of trying to reverse the outcome.

In the two weeks leading up to the electoral college vote, Mr Trump and the RNC had raised an average of $ 2.9 million a day online. In the two weeks that followed, the average was $ 1.2 million.

In fact, Mr Trump and the RNC had raised more than $ 2 million online every day since the election through December 14. For the remainder of the year, through December 31st, when donations are made at the end of the year.

The new numbers capture almost all of Mr. Trump’s online fundraising drives when he stopped raising money on Jan. 6, addressing a crowd of supporters who then stormed the Capitol in a violent uproar and the Mr. Biden was officially ratified by Congress as the next President.

After this uprising, Mr Trump essentially stopped sending donations to his supporters (the RNC took a break of about a week). His last campaign email that day began: “TODAY is going to be a historic day in our nation’s history.”

Even so, Mr Trump left office with the tens of millions of dollars raised for his new Save America PAC, which he can use to fund a post-president political operation, including travel and staff.

But Mr Trump is still facing a surge in legal costs as an impeachment trial in the Senate is set to begin in just over a week. Late on Saturday, Mr Trump abruptly parted ways with senior attorney Butch Bowers to defend his impeachment.

In his first impeachment, the RNC covered some of the legal costs for Mr Trump for being the sitting president and the party leader. These costs included a payment of $ 196,000 to Alan Dershowitz, the attorney who was part of Mr. Trump’s defense team.

It is not clear what role the RNC will play in the impending impeachment, but the party’s coffers have benefited immensely from Mr. Trump’s aggressive fundraising as he spread conspiracy theories about electoral fraud. About 25 percent of the funds raised through Mr. Trump’s email and text messaging operations were earmarked for the RNC

Make Bathtub Bombs At Dwelling

Whether you’re looking for stress relief or some alone time after hanging out with your family, there are many reasons why you can’t get enough of your tub this winter. But one variable to consider the next time you take a much-needed bath: would your bath be better with a bath bomb?

If you’re new to the bathroom-related self-care routine, bath bombs are little pucks with scented and salt on them. They bubble up and turn dips into a multi-sensory experience. While you can buy bath bombs from major cosmetic retailers, you don’t always know what is in them. And when it comes to potential allergens, “there are no bath bombs that are completely risk-free,” said Hadley King, a dermatologist from New York City.

However, making them at home gives you control over the ingredients list, said Jovana Ristić, the author of the beauty blog Be Spotted, which focuses on DIY beauty products. Or, you may already have most of the ingredients in your pantry.

While the do-it-yourself approach allows you to avoid irritants, it also allows you to add beneficial ingredients. Ms. Ristić’s recipe for bath bombs contains colloidal oatmeal, which is known for its skin-soothing properties, said Dr. King. Shea butter is also used, which can help moisturize the skin.

Most bath bombs are based on the same base: Epsom salt, baking soda, and citric acid. The soda and acid cause the bubbly, and when used together they should cancel each other out when it comes to changing the pH of your bathing water, which means it is neither too acidic nor too alkaline, said Dr. King. This is worrying as a significant change in the pH of your bath water can lead to vaginal irritation or yeast infections.

If you have sensitive skin, mend the test ingredients by applying a small amount to your forearm. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse it off and see if you’ve developed a reaction in 48 hours, said Dr. King. (Essential oils are especially important to test because they’re the most likely irritants, she said.) To be on the safe side, don’t soak with a bath bomb for more than 15 minutes and rinse off when you’re done.

This recipe, courtesy of Ms. Ristic, takes some practice. To get the bombs to the right consistency, they should be wet enough to hold together but not so wet that they start to hiss in the mold. The good news is that even badly shaped bath bombs gush and smell great. So don’t sweat if yours don’t look in-store on your first try.

¼ cup of colloidal oatmeal flour (You can also use ¼ cup of oatmeal flour, which is pulsed in a food processor until it is finely ground.)

½ cup of Epsom salt

½ cup citric acid

1 cup of baking soda

2 tablespoons of shea butter, melted (you can use other oils such as coconut or almond oil)

20 drops of the essential oil of your choice

Water in a spray bottle

You will need a mixing bowl and some type of mold. A meatball, ice cream, or cookie scoop will work. Amazon also sells custom-made molds. You should also wear rubber or latex gloves, as citric acid can irritate the skin if not diluted with water.

Mix the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the melted shea butter and essential oil and mix to combine. Sprinkle the mixture with some water and fill the forms. With your gloves on, slide the mixture into the molds. It should be just wet enough that when you squeeze it, it clumps together. Let it sit for a minute or two before tapping the mold to loosen it. Allow the final products to dry for at least two hours before use.

The Week in Enterprise: GameStop’s Weird Saga

Hello everybody. Here’s your breakdown of the top business and tech news to get you ready for the week to come. – Charlotte Cowles

Who could have predicted that struggling video game retailer GameStop would hijack markets and cause Wall Street to collapse? The company’s shares rose a ridiculous 1,700 percent this month, but not because the company did something new or special. Instead, it became the focus of hordes of amateur traders – also known as retail investors – who banded together on Reddit message boards and propelled GameStop’s share price up by buying tons of its stock through apps like Robinhood and E-Trade. They followed similar tactics with outsiders like AMC Entertainment, BlackBerry, and American Airlines, and also increased their share prices. In doing so, they squeezed big Wall Street firms that were betting against the companies, forcing them to suffer huge losses.

GameStop versus Wall Street

Let us understand you

    • Stocks of GameStop, the video game retailer, have risen because amateur investors starting at Reddit have bet heavily on the company’s stock.
    • The wave gained momentum when large hedge funds short-sold GameStop stock – essentially betting against the company’s success.
    • Sudden demand pushed the stock price from less than $ 20 in December to nearly $ 200 on Thursday. At least on paper.
    • It’s not just GameStop. Amateur investors have supported other companies that many large investors have shunned, such as AMC and BlackBerry.
    • This bubble around GameStop can force large investors to raise funds to cover their losses or dump stocks in other companies.

All the bubbles eventually burst, but the question is when. GameStop’s stock began to temporarily dump on Thursday after Robinhood and similar apps restricted trading. The crackdown stabilized the markets but was criticized by lawmakers who accused the apps of targeting Wall Street hedge funds. GameStop’s investors weren’t happy either, and the backlash led Robinhood to reverse its decision and resume “limited” trading a day later. The Takeaway: Now that trading apps allow millions of ordinary people to quickly and easily buy stocks from their living room, this probably won’t be the last time they team up on Wall Street.

The latest report from the Commerce Department confirmed what you probably could have guessed: 2020 set a record for the worst economic decline in the country in a calendar year with at least one measure. The gross domestic product rose by only 1 percent in the last quarter, a significant slowdown compared to the last three months. Economists attributed that to dwindling tax support from the federal government at the end of the year and the recurrence of coronavirus cases during the holidays, which led to more business closings and closings. However, analysts also expect the country’s comeback to be more stable in 2021 as more government incentives are in sight and vaccine distribution is underway.

Better make sure your garage has enough electrical outlets. General Motors has pledged to phase out gas-powered vehicles and switch entirely to zero-tailpipe cars and trucks by 2035. This is part of the company’s plan to become carbon neutral by 2040, one of the most ambitious goals in the auto industry. The move sets a higher standard for other automakers and could encourage the Biden government to push for even more aggressive policies to encourage companies to fight climate change.

Leon Black, the executive director and chairman of Apollo Global Management, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, said he would step down from his leadership role by July after it was revealed he had sold more than $ 150 million to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have paid. Mr Epstein committed suicide in prison more than a year ago when he was charged with federal sex trafficking. However, many of his former employees continue to be affected by the proximity. An investigation found that Mr. Black’s payments were in compensation for consulting Mr. Epstein. They also explain how Mr Epstein was able to fund at least part of his extravagant lifestyle.

The Big Four tech giants have faced re-examination and legal threats from antitrust watchdogs in recent months. But will this affect their growth? Probably not, but we’ll learn more when Amazon and Alphabet, Google’s parent company, report their latest earnings in the coming week. Facebook earnings rose a whopping 53 percent in the last quarter, despite the company cracking down on a lawsuit filed by the Federal Trade Commission in December (kicking former President Donald J. Trump off the platform and many of his supporters as a result). The new iPhone 12 from Apple led to a sales increase of 21 percent and brought the company for the first time a quarterly sales of over 100 billion US dollars.

President Biden’s election for Secretary of the Treasury, former Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen, was confirmed and sworn in. The Walgreens Boots Alliance has named Rosalind Brewer, now Chief Operating Officer at Starbucks, as its next chief executive officer and made her the only black woman currently running a Fortune 500 company. A small painting by Botticelli fetched $ 92.2 million at auction at Sotheby’s, a sign that the world’s richest are still ready to champion the visual arts.

And finally …

Has the pandemic forced any of your favorite local businesses to close? Tell us about it here. We collect stories about special neighborhood businesses that had to close last year and what this loss meant.

See John Krasinski Put Phrases to The Workplace Theme Music on SNL

This was the original @ theofficetv theme song. Don’t ask questions. pic.twitter.com/GENJfBjGks

– Saturday Night Live – SNL (@nbcsnl) January 31, 2021

Everyone knows the well-known melody of The officeJohn Krasinski decided to give it a little more flair even though he’s already an icon. In a sketch for the January 30th episode of the SNL episode, John, who served as the host, remixed the theme song and added a series of funny “lyrics” in the form of observations to the clips that appear in the show’s opening credits.

“Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton, Scranton”, he begins the “long lost lyrics” of the song to the rhythm of the music. “That’s where we all live and work – that’s a calculator. There’s Dwight, he’s the bad guy, and the hero’s name is Jim!”

There’s more to it, and while it’s extremely catchy, it’s definitely better to hear than read. Listen to the entire “original” The office Theme song as written and performed by John Krasinski in the clip above (and don’t miss his opening monologue which included a very memorable kiss).

A 10-Yr-Outdated GameStop Investor Cashed In. His Return? Over 5,000%

“All of a sudden I heard ‘ringing, ringing, ringing, ringing, ringing,” Ms. Carr, 31, said in an interview on Friday. “I packed my cell phone and looked at it, and it was $ 351. I was shocked, “I bought this thing for $ 6,” I thought, “there is no way this can be right.”

Ms. Carr, a nutritionist, quickly pulled her son out of virtual learning and asked him what he wanted to do. “I tried to explain to him that this was unusual,” she told mySanAntonio.com, a segment of the San Antonio Express News. “I asked him, ‘Do you want to stay or sell?'”

Jaydyn decided to sell his stock and made $ 3,200 – a return of more than 5,000 percent on an investment of around $ 60.

“I was shocked and excited at the same time,” he said in a telephone interview on Friday.

He said he decided to save $ 2,200 and invest the remaining $ 1,000, most likely in stocks of Roblox, a multiplayer gaming universe popular with young children, when the platform goes public.

“Long-term investing is important because that’s how I got that money,” said Jaydyn.

The surge sparked Jaydyn’s interest in amateur day trading. “He’s definitely ready to hit the market at full speed,” said his mother.

Divorce Throughout the Pandemic – The New York Instances

Covid divorces are on the slow path.

Divorce was often time-consuming and expensive – a US survey found the average cost was $ 12,900 – but now routine parts of the process, such as getting a document certified, can require heroic efforts. Moving out is also difficult, especially in Los Angeles and parts of Connecticut and New Jersey, where house prices have increased. You may want a spouse who wants to keep the house but can’t afford to buy the other. In New York City, where prices have fallen, no one wants to sell the $ 6 million apartment when it has to be quoted at $ 3 million, as one of Ms. Chemtob’s customers does.

For many wealthy New Yorkers seeking a divorce, there are many arguments about the vacation home that many families have lived in for months. In one case by attorney Harriet Newman Cohen, a couple spent thousands of dollars arguing over a court order that would seal off the master bedroom in their Hamptons home so the husband could not sleep there with his girlfriend when it was his turn to turn was to see the children.

“He wasn’t going to say,” I’m not going in there, “so it had to be cordoned off,” said Ms. Cohen, whose client included New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

Delays can be more expensive.

In addition to the mental strain caused by the waiting game, delays related to coronaviruses can also increase the bill.

Jessica Wilbur, 36, of Frankfort, Maine, first filed for divorce in March 2019. The trial has been postponed twice: first because the courts were closed because of the pandemic and again because a lawyer may have been exposed to the virus. Although the trial finally took place in October, she did not receive her orders until mid-December because the judge was so supported. The delays, Ms. Wilbur said, cost her thousands of dollars, both because she and her lawyer had to prepare for court every time, and because more problems would arise with her 12-year-old husband in the meantime. The divorce is not final.

Lawyers acknowledge that while there is seldom travel time or waiting in court for clients to pay for those days (almost everything is virtual and by appointment), this is offset by other costs such as travel expenses. B. Hours waiting outside the courthouse to file an electronic case system does not accept.

So many documents.
Then there’s this notarized document, something a lawyer could do so easily while waiting in court with a client. In at least some states, if customers prefer not to do this in person, video calls must be sent back and forth with the document by mail or delivery service.

Biden could draw ‘crimson strains’ in opposition to Chinese language authoritarianism

An anonymous author, himself described as a former senior government official with deep expertise and experience in China, released an exceptional Atlantic Council strategy paper this week.

Its goal is to shape the strategy of the Biden government towards Beijing – with President Xi Jinping as the main focus.

What makes the paper worth reading, all 26,000 words, are the author’s insights into China’s internal workings and party rifts, the author’s solutions to the current lack of a coherent US national strategy towards Beijing, and the paper’s controversial demand for the Biden government to draw They “red lines” which “lead to direct US intervention if deterrence fails”.

“The list of red lines in the United States should be short, focused and enforceable,” the author writes, undermining “China’s tactics for many years … to blur the red lines that otherwise became too early to face open confrontation with.” the United States. ” Beijing’s favor. “

The paper argues that these red lines should include:

  • Any nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons action by China against the United States or its allies or North Korea in which China has not taken decisive action to prevent such North Korean action.
  • Any Chinese military attack against Taiwan or its offshore islands, including an economic blockade or major cyberattack on Taiwan’s public infrastructure and institutions.
  • Any Chinese attack on Japanese forces in defense of Japanese sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands and the surrounding exclusive economic zone in the East China Sea.
  • Any major hostile action by China in the South China Sea to further retake and militarize islands, use force against other claimants, or prevent complete freedom of navigation by the United States and Allied naval forces.
  • Any Chinse attack on the territory or military property of allies of the US treaty.

The red line call is already fueling debate among China experts around the world, despite the fact that the paper wasn’t released until Thursday. The dispute affects those who believe that setting clearer boundaries would reduce Chinese aggression and those who believe that setting such red lines is an invitation to U.S. humiliation if not enforced or undesirable Conflict when enforced.

What has led to an even bigger debate, however, is the paper’s unique focus on China’s leaders and behavior, which since rising to power in 2013 has made the country more externally assertive and internally repressive, most recently tightening restrictions on private companies and has strengthened the role of state-owned companies.

“The main challenge facing the United States in the 21st century is the rise of an increasingly authoritarian China under President and Secretary-General Xi Jinping,” the anonymous author writes. “US policy strategy must continue to focus on Xi, his inner circle, and the China political context in which they govern. Changing their decision-making requires understanding, acting, and changing their political and strategic paradigm. All US policy aims at this starting from changing China’s behavior should revolve around that fact or it will likely prove ineffective. ”

It may seem like a simple, logical exercise that as time goes on as a country becomes more authoritarian and power is increasingly invested in a person, any strategy for managing that country must begin at the top. Experts have been approaching Putin’s Russia through this lens for some time.

However, the first debate this week after The Longer Telegram was released ranged from one former senior US official who welcomed the paper for its clear and straightforward focus on Xi, to another who feared it would be US Approach would be considered as confirmation of regime change that could only exacerbate tensions.

The author hopes his paper will be an important step “towards a new American China strategy,” which includes ten key elements outlined in the paper, from eliminating domestic economic and institutional weaknesses to fully coordinating with it important allies are sufficient so that all important action is taken in response to China being taken in unity.

The author argues that any US strategy should be based on “the four pillars of American power”: the power of its military, the role of the dollar as a global reserve currency and pillar of the international financial system, continuation of global technology leadership, and the values of individual freedom , Fairness and the rule of law “despite recent political divisions and difficulties”.

It was the author’s immodest decision to name this extraordinary work “The Longer Telegram” and boldly relate it to George Kennan’s famous “Long Telegram” of February 1946, which originally came off its seat as a cable labeled “Secret” was sent to the State Department Deputy Head of Mission at the US Embassy in Moscow.

This “Lange Telegram” found its place in history when it was published in July 1947 by Foreign Affairs magazine under the pseudonym “X”. Historians acknowledge Kennan for the further development of the containment policy towards the Soviet Union, which was ultimately successful, “anchored in the analytical conclusion that the USSR would ultimately collapse under the weight of its own contradictions,” the anonymous author now writes.

Kennan was guided by his knowledge of how the Soviet Union worked internally, and the author argues that US strategy must once again be based on a better understanding of what is inside China. What is different now, the author argues, is that the Chinese system “is much more adept at surviving” after learning from the collapse of the Soviets.

He rejects the Trump administration’s approach of attacking the Chinese Communist Party as a whole without mentioning the former US president. He argues that this would be “strategically self-destructive” and would only serve to enable President Xi to unite a CCP that is “severely divided over Xi’s leadership and enormous ambitions.”

What would success look like?

The author clearly replies: “Until the middle of the century, the United States and its key allies will continue to dominate the regional and global balance of power across all major power indices. China has been prevented from taking Taiwan militarily. It was Xi.” replaced by a more moderate party leadership, and that the Chinese people themselves have challenged and questioned the Communist Party’s centuries-old claim that China’s ancient civilization is forever destined for an authoritarian future. “

It’s hard to argue with these goals. and even more difficult to achieve.
