China Approves Sinopharm’s Covid-19 Vaccine because it Strikes to Inoculate Tens of millions

The Chinese government said on Thursday that it had approved a homegrown coronavirus vaccine after an early analysis of clinical trial results showed that it was effective. The announcements sent a positive signal for the global rollout of Chinese vaccines but lacked crucial details.

The manufacturer, a state-controlled firm called Sinopharm, said on Wednesday that a vaccine candidate made by its Beijing Institute of Biological Products arm had an efficacy rate of 79 percent based on an interim analysis of Phase 3 trials. Sinopharm said it had filed an application with Chinese regulators to allow the vaccine to be used broadly, and on Thursday the government said the vaccine had been granted conditional approval.

If supported, the interim results will bolster claims that Chinese officials have made in recent days that the country’s vaccines are safe and effective. Even before the government issued its official approval, the authorities had already moved ahead with mass vaccinations, defying industry norms. They plan to vaccinate 50 million people in China by mid-February, when hundreds of millions are expected to travel for the Lunar New Year holiday.

But Sinopharm’s announcement provided no breakdown of results and left many questions unanswered, adding to a lack of clarity that has dogged China’s coronavirus vaccine development for months. Wu Yonglin, Sinopharm’s president, said on Thursday that the company would publish details of the trials in major academic journals later.

China’s drive to develop a homegrown vaccine speaks to the country’s technological and diplomatic ambitions. A successful vaccine would support the country’s claim as a peer and rival to the United States and other developed countries in biomedical sciences.

The Sinopharm vaccine’s results show that it is less effective than others that have been approved in other countries. Still, the results are well above the 50 percent threshold that makes a vaccine effective in the eyes of the medical establishment.

Two other coronavirus vaccines, made by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech, have been shown to have an efficacy rate of about 95 percent. The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has received authorization in more than 40 countries. Moderna’s vaccine has been authorized in the United States, and other countries are evaluating its trial results. Russia has announced that its Sputnik V vaccine has an efficacy rate of 91 percent and has begun a mass vaccination campaign.

Beijing has leaned heavily on the promise of its vaccines to strengthen ties with developing countries deemed vital to China’s interests. Officials have toured the world pledging to provide Chinese vaccines as a “global public good,” a charm offensive that the United States may seek to counter, particularly when the campaign encroaches on its backyard.

The political stakes in the race for a vaccine are particularly high for China’s authoritarian Communist Party, which has been criticized for stifling information and playing down the virus when it first emerged in the city of Wuhan late last year.

A successful vaccine, if quickly made available to the world, could help repair the party’s image globally and that of its leader, Xi Jinping. The Chinese companies have said their vaccine would be cheaper and easier to transport, which if proven could give them significant appeal in the developing world.

Chinese vaccines may still be greeted with other questions. Scientists said that the headline figures released by Sinopharm were encouraging but that the lack of supporting data made it difficult for the results to be independently assessed.

Answers to Your Vaccine Questions

With distribution of a coronavirus vaccine beginning in the U.S., here are answers to some questions you may be wondering about:

    • If I live in the U.S., when can I get the vaccine? While the exact order of vaccine recipients may vary by state, most will likely put medical workers and residents of long-term care facilities first. If you want to understand how this decision is getting made, this article will help.
    • When can I return to normal life after being vaccinated? Life will return to normal only when society as a whole gains enough protection against the coronavirus. Once countries authorize a vaccine, they’ll only be able to vaccinate a few percent of their citizens at most in the first couple months. The unvaccinated majority will still remain vulnerable to getting infected. A growing number of coronavirus vaccines are showing robust protection against becoming sick. But it’s also possible for people to spread the virus without even knowing they’re infected because they experience only mild symptoms or none at all. Scientists don’t yet know if the vaccines also block the transmission of the coronavirus. So for the time being, even vaccinated people will need to wear masks, avoid indoor crowds, and so on. Once enough people get vaccinated, it will become very difficult for the coronavirus to find vulnerable people to infect. Depending on how quickly we as a society achieve that goal, life might start approaching something like normal by the fall 2021.
    • If I’ve been vaccinated, do I still need to wear a mask? Yes, but not forever. Here’s why. The coronavirus vaccines are injected deep into the muscles and stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies. This appears to be enough protection to keep the vaccinated person from getting ill. But what’s not clear is whether it’s possible for the virus to bloom in the nose — and be sneezed or breathed out to infect others — even as antibodies elsewhere in the body have mobilized to prevent the vaccinated person from getting sick. The vaccine clinical trials were designed to determine whether vaccinated people are protected from illness — not to find out whether they could still spread the coronavirus. Based on studies of flu vaccine and even patients infected with Covid-19, researchers have reason to be hopeful that vaccinated people won’t spread the virus, but more research is needed. In the meantime, everyone — even vaccinated people — will need to think of themselves as possible silent spreaders and keep wearing a mask. Read more here.
    • Will it hurt? What are the side effects? The Pfizer and BioNTech vaccine is delivered as a shot in the arm, like other typical vaccines. The injection into your arm won’t feel different than any other vaccine, but the rate of short-lived side effects does appear higher than a flu shot. Tens of thousands of people have already received the vaccines, and none of them have reported any serious health problems. The side effects, which can resemble the symptoms of Covid-19, last about a day and appear more likely after the second dose. Early reports from vaccine trials suggest some people might need to take a day off from work because they feel lousy after receiving the second dose. In the Pfizer study, about half developed fatigue. Other side effects occurred in at least 25 to 33 percent of patients, sometimes more, including headaches, chills and muscle pain. While these experiences aren’t pleasant, they are a good sign that your own immune system is mounting a potent response to the vaccine that will provide long-lasting immunity.
    • Will mRNA vaccines change my genes? No. The vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer use a genetic molecule to prime the immune system. That molecule, known as mRNA, is eventually destroyed by the body. The mRNA is packaged in an oily bubble that can fuse to a cell, allowing the molecule to slip in. The cell uses the mRNA to make proteins from the coronavirus, which can stimulate the immune system. At any moment, each of our cells may contain hundreds of thousands of mRNA molecules, which they produce in order to make proteins of their own. Once those proteins are made, our cells then shred the mRNA with special enzymes. The mRNA molecules our cells make can only survive a matter of minutes. The mRNA in vaccines is engineered to withstand the cell’s enzymes a bit longer, so that the cells can make extra virus proteins and prompt a stronger immune response. But the mRNA can only last for a few days at most before they are destroyed.

Sinopharm on Wednesday did not disclose the size of the trial population or provide detailed information about any serious side effects, data points that scientists look for in such releases. On Thursday, Mr. Wu, Sinopharm’s president, said at a news briefing that more than 60,000 people had been vaccinated as part of the trials.

“With each of these vaccines we’re dealing with bits and pieces of information, but the Chinese companies have provided even less information than the Russian companies have,” said Dr. Kim Mulholland, a pediatrician at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia.

“At least with the Russian vaccines we were told the number of cases and the basis of evidence for why their vaccine was effective,” said Dr. Mulholland, who has been involved in the oversight of many vaccine trials, including ones for a Covid-19 vaccine.

Michael Baker, a professor with the department of global health at the University of Otago in Wellington who is an adviser to the New Zealand government, said that while the initial figures from Sinopharm looked promising, without more information it was difficult to know for sure.

“It’s pretty light on the details,” he said. “One question is: What markets do they propose to use these vaccines in? Because if they want to have a global market, they’re obviously going to have to supply all those details.”

Details about the efficacy of another Chinese vaccine candidate, made by Sinovac, a private Beijing-based vaccine maker, have also been released in a piecemeal fashion.

The absence of detailed information on the safety and efficacy of Chinese vaccines has not stopped officials in the country from administering them to the public. Officials in several provinces and cities say they are focusing on what China calls “key priority groups” — doctors, hotel employees, border inspection personnel and workers in food storage and transportation, as well as travelers — in an ongoing inoculation drive.

Chinese officials and companies had already administered Chinese-made vaccines, mostly made by Sinopharm, to more than a million people in China. The campaign drew criticism from overseas scientists who said they were concerned that the authorities did not closely monitor people after they received injections outside clinical trials.

To China, a vaccine that can help protect its 1.4 billion people is crucial to its plans to revitalize the economy.

The country has largely stamped out the coronavirus with a combination of restrictions on foreign arrivals, mass testing and tight lockdowns of neighborhoods whenever any cases are detected. But officials remain concerned that the winter could bring a new wave of infections and hope that a widely available vaccine can help prepare the country for when regular travel and trade resume.

Already, new local outbreaks were being reported in Beijing and the northern city of Shenyang this week, prompting the imposition of new measures. In Shenyang, officials declared that the city was in “wartime status” as they rolled out restrictions on large-scale gatherings including group meals, training sessions and end-of-year parties.

Sinovac and Sinopharm use inactivated coronaviruses to make their vaccines — a tried-and-true method dating back over 130 years. The companies use chemicals to disable the virus’s genes so that it cannot replicate. Yet the inactivated coronavirus can still cause the body’s immune system to produce antibodies against it. By comparison, Moderna and Pfizer are taking a revolutionary gene-based approach that had never before been approved for widespread use.

Experts say there are drawbacks to inactivated vaccines like the ones being made by Sinovac and Sinopharm. They require starting off with large batches of live coronavirus samples, which can pose a biosecurity risk. Once the live samples are inactivated, it takes an extra manufacturing step to ensure that none of them survive the treatment.

Another advantage of the vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer is that they are faster to make and said to be more stable than traditional vaccines. Pfizer projects that it will be able to produce up to 1.3 billion doses in 2021, while Moderna expects to be able to make 500 million to one billion doses.

The Chinese government has promised to produce 610 million doses by the end of the year and expects to make more than one billion doses next year. Several large countries like Brazil and Indonesia, where Chinese companies have been conducting trials, have each received shipments of more than a million doses of Sinovac vaccines. Turkey has ordered 50 million doses.

People who were previously vaccinated in China have said the two-dose regimen costs about $60 to $150. According to people who have received the Sinovac vaccine, the company is charging about $30 a dose. Sinopharm has said the cost of two doses should be lower than $150. Zeng Yixin, the deputy minister of the National Health Commission, said on Thursday that the vaccine would be provided to the Chinese public for free, a reversal of previous statements by Chinese officials.

Colorado well being officers say are investigating a second suspected case

Governor Jared Polis and officials announced that Denver and a number of other Colorado counties on Tuesday, November 17, at the Boettcher Mansion in Denver, Colorado, will be displaying “u2019” on a newly redesigned version of the COVID-19 color-coded dial Red stage will be moved in 2020.

WASHINGTON – Colorado health officials said Wednesday they are investigating a potential second case of a new and potentially more infectious strain of Covid-19.

“We still don’t know much about this variant,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis on Wednesday, advising Coloradans to keep to CDC guidelines in the new year.

On Tuesday, Colorado health officials confirmed the first case of the B.1.1.7 variant of coronavirus.

The infected person, a man in his twenties, has no travel history and is in isolation with mild symptoms, officials said Tuesday.

The confirmed case and the second patient are both members of the Colorado National Guard. Both people helped set up the Good Samaritan Society for assisted living in Simla, about an hour and a half south of Denver.

Officials said Wednesday that a total of six Colorado National Guard members worked at the facility.

“Both cases involve Colorado National Guard personnel deployed to support staff at the Good Samaritan Society nursing home in Simla,” said the state’s chief epidemiologist, Dr. Rachel Herlihy of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

She added that the people were tested in the state laboratory on Dec. 24, a routine measure for members of the National Guard who work in close proximity to Covid-19 patients or outbreak-prone areas.

“We are currently investigating two ways these people might have got their infections,” Herlihy said.

“With the discovery of the variant in Colorado, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have made it possible for us to temporarily suspend visits to nursing homes so that the population can be vaccinated quickly,” said Polis.

“Not only are older Coloradans feeling more of health risk, but social isolation is a difficult and emotional problem that so many nursing home residents face,” he said, adding that the move will protect the state’s elderly community.

Dr. Emily Travanty, director of laboratory services for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, said officials are currently analyzing 24 suspicious samples that could contain mutations. She explained that there was not enough data to link the additional 24 samples to variant B.1.1.7.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Dr. Henry Walke from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the new variant appears to spread “more easily and faster than other strains”. Walke also said it doesn’t seem to lead to worse infections or an increased risk of death.

Walke said the person in Colorado infected with the new strain of the virus had no travel history, “suggesting that this variant was transmitted person-to-person in the United States.”

He added that given the spread of the variant in the UK, it was “expected” to arrive in the US.

Preliminary analysis of the new variant, first identified in the UK, suggests that in some cases it could be the culprit for the UK’s recent surge.

The CDC said in December that the new strain could already be in circulation in the US without notice. The CDC cited ongoing trips between the UK and the US as an explanation for the possible arrival of the new variant.

The discovery of the pollution in the UK sparked border closings in European countries such as Ireland, France, Belgium and Germany, as well as in countries outside the continent.

Last week, the UK government confirmed that another infectious variant of the coronavirus identified in South Africa had also appeared in the UK. The tribe from South Africa has not yet been identified in the USA.

defend your privateness in case you win Mega Tens of millions or Powerball

MARK RALSTON | AFP | Getty Images

There is a chance that at least a few people in 2020 will be far richer than most of us.

With no ticket matching all six numbers drawn in Mega Millions on Tuesday, the jackpot for the Friday night drawing rose to $ 401 million. Powerball’s grand prize is not far behind at $ 363 million for the Wednesday night draw.

If you’re lucky enough to be the next big winner, experts say that part of protecting your windfall is protecting your identity when you can.

“Four hundred million dollars would attract a lot [attention]”said Attorney Kurt Panouses, founder of the Panouses Law Group in Indialantic, Florida and an expert in helping lottery winners.

Keeping your win calm will protect you from strangers and scammers who want a part of the prize.

However, states don’t always make data protection easy: only a handful allow winners to remain completely anonymous. In other cases, you may be able to claim the award through a trust or limited liability company or LLC that does not have your name on it. However, you need to plan for this.

Here are tips for big lottery winners trying to protect their privacy.

Handling your ticket

The standard advice is to sign the back of your ticket. However, if you find yourself in a state where a trust or LLC can claim the prize, hold back with this signature if privacy is important to you.

“Of course you want to protect the ticket, but whatever name is on the back of the ticket is identified as the payee,” said Panouses. “The back of the ticket is important for data protection reasons.”

In most states, he said, if you use an LLC or trust to claim the money, you can bypass disclosing your name.

Panousas said he has also created trusts whose beneficiaries are sub-trusts instead of the winners. This adds an extra layer of data protection.

stay calm

While you might want to share your exciting news, experts say the fewer people know, the better.

“Keep the circle of people who don’t know or tell anyone about it,” said Panouses.

For example, if you are claiming the profit in conjunction with other family members, i.e. through a trust or LLC as a joint prize, then all parties involved should sign non-disclosure agreements, Panouses said.

Money management

In addition to choosing experienced professionals to help you tackle the windfall, it may also be wise to avoid the professionals in your hometown if you are concerned about the news that your profits will be lost.

“Someone in this office might say, ‘Oh, this is the lottery winner,'” Panouses said. He relies on a large investment and trust company that has a proven record of serving wealthy households.

“If I open accounts with them, I know the information won’t be made public,” said Panouses.

Plan an escape

Skipping town a bit after claiming your prize is probably a good idea.

“We make sure the winners have a plan to go somewhere for a week or so after they claim,” Panouses said. “When people find out you won, they may show up at your home.”

It’s also worth changing the cell phone number, he said. If you have a landline, this should also be changed.

You may also want to close your social media accounts if you cannot remain anonymous.

HSBC names 2 international locations that tackled Covid and can profit in 2021

SINGAPORE – Singapore and Vietnam successfully battled coronavirus in 2020 and are likely to maintain the situation for next year, an economist said this week.

“These two countries are probably the most positive,” said HSBC Global Research’s Joseph Incalcaterra when asked which Southeast Asian countries can keep Covid under control and smoothly introduce vaccines.

Singapore “has brought its previous outbreaks under control and … at a time when most countries in the world are actually tightening restrictions, Singapore is going the opposite way,” ASEAN’s chief economist told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia” on Tuesday.

The city-state entered the third phase of its reopening this week and now allows gatherings of eight out of five people. Tourist attractions can increase their operating capacity from 50% to 65% once they are approved by the authorities.

Incalcaterra said Singapore also has an effective vaccination strategy.

“Thanks to a relatively small population, the prospects for Singapore for 2021 are extremely good by comparison,” he said.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said there will be enough vaccines for “everyone in Singapore” by the third quarter of 2021. The country was the first in Asia to receive a shipment of Pfizer BioNTech vaccines on December 21, 2020.

HSBC’s Incalcaterra also praised Vietnam’s handling of the virus, saying its response to the pandemic enabled the country to maintain its reputation as a “very good destination” for foreign direct investment. The country has been viewed as an alternative manufacturing hub for companies looking to move out of China.

“We have seen that FDI remains very resilient in Vietnam this year,” he said.

Overall, however, Southeast Asia is unlikely to benefit from a vaccine in the near future due to logistical difficulties in rural parts of the region. “It is very unlikely that a significant portion of the population will be vaccinated in 2021,” he said.

Deep damage

Separately, Incalcaterra said Southeast Asia had been “hit very hard” this year. “From a domestic perspective, the traditional consumer motor of these economies is no longer intact.”

“We really don’t have a good view of the short-term recovery considering how deep the damage is,” he added.

While electronic exports have been “relatively bright,” HSBC is focusing on how quickly consumption and investment in the region can recover.

He said countries had “very ambitious infrastructure programs” to make the region a “reliable base for manufacturing”. These projects have stalled because of the coronavirus.

“Until the virus is under control … we won’t see this investment engine regain traction,” he said. “I think this is the biggest short-term obstacle to growth in Southeast Asia.”

Discovery of Virus Variant in Colorado and California Alarms Scientists

“I would expect a similar trend,” said Trevor Bedford, evolutionary biologist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. The variant is currently likely to make up less than 1 percent of cases, but it could make up the majority of cases by March.

The variant has 23 mutations compared to the original virus that was discovered in Wuhan, China. Seventeen mutations have occurred since the virus strayed from its youngest ancestor, said Muge Cevik, an infectious disease expert at the University of St Andrews in Scotland and a scientific advisor to the UK government.

The speed at which the virus took on so many changes worries scientists who expected the coronavirus to evolve much more slowly.

Current vaccine candidates should continue to protect people from disease, several experts said. However, the appearance of the new variant, which contains at least one mutation that weakens the body’s immune protection, makes it likely that vaccines will need regular adjustments, much like they do in order to remain effective against the influenza virus.

Scientists still aren’t sure how much more easily the mutant spreads. Initial estimates were around 70 percent higher transferability, but since then the number has been revised to 56 percent and could drop even further, said Dr. Cevik.

But with each new person it infects, the coronavirus also has more chances of mutating and therefore more chances of showing up with mutations that give it an advantage – by making it more transmissible or less susceptible to the immune system, for example.

“When you’ve had enough of huge amounts of viral replications around the world, you’re going to get lots of different varieties,” said Dr. Dan Barouch, a virologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

‘No Reasonable Path’ for Fast Vote on $2,000 Stimulus Checks, McConnell Says

WASHINGTON – Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Senator has effectively dashed any chance that Congress would raise stimulus checks to $ 2,000 before President Trump leaves office. He said there was “no realistic way” for the Senate to pass such a law on its own.

Mr McConnell on Wednesday insisted that lawmakers would only consider one bill that would include the $ 2,000 checks on two other issues Mr Trump has asked Congress to do: investigate the integrity of the 2020 election and remove legal protections for social media platforms. Both are no beginners to Democrats, which will ruin any chance of such a law being passed.

In his opening speech, McConnell defiantly accused the Democrats of trying to push more money out the door. “The Senate is not bullied into throwing more borrowed money into the hands of the Democrats’ rich friends who don’t need the help,” he said.

That seemed to ignore the fact that Mr Trump was the one asking lawmakers to increase stimulus checks from $ 600 to $ 2,000 and criticizing his own party for not moving fast enough to provide more money .

“Unless the Republicans have a death wish, and if it is correct, they must approve the $ 2000 payments as soon as possible. $ 600 is not enough! “The president wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.

With four days left in the legislature, the tough stance effectively guarantees that despite growing demands from Republican lawmakers to put more money in the hands of Americans, Mr. Trump will not receive any of his last-minute demands.

For days, Mr Trump held a bipartisan $ 900 billion hostage who said she did not write enough checks and refused to sign them. He finally gave in on Sunday, saying he had signed up by lawmakers to increase payments and address two other issues that upset him: his loss in the 2020 elections and legal protections for big tech companies like Facebook and Twitter, the provided by Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

“The Senate will initiate the process for a vote that will increase checks to $ 2,000, revoke Section 230 and initiate an investigation into electoral fraud,” Trump said in a statement on Sunday, reiterating his unsubstantiated allegation of fraud 2020 elections.

Mr McConnell insisted that the President wanted these demands to be taken into account at the same time and accused the Democrats of “trying to make a quick request to the President”.

“The Senate is not going to split up the three issues that President Trump has linked just because Democrats are afraid to address two of them,” McConnell said.

“They hope everyone just forgets about electoral integrity and great technology,” he said. “You absolutely want to ignore these two parts of President Trump’s request.”

However, Mr Trump continued to press for swift action to increase controls.

“$ 2000 ASAP!” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

While millions of Americans remain unemployed, many economists say that increasing the checks from $ 600 to $ 2,000 would most likely have a negligible impact on economic recovery, as a significant portion of those who receive payments are likely to save the funds and will not output. The stimulus payments are based on income level and not on employment status. The Democrats had been pushing for an additional $ 600 a week for unemployment benefits as that money would go directly to those out of work, but the Republicans denied that request, saying it would discourage people from looking for work.

Updated

Apr. 30, 2020 at 8:31 am ET

On Monday, the House approved a bill increasing checks to $ 2,000, and Senate Democrats called on Mr. McConnell to allow a similar vote. After Mr McConnell finished his presentation on Wednesday, Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the leader of the minority, tried again to immediately vote on the House bill, arguing that there were only a few days left in the legislature and the House session be. “There’s no other game in town.”

“At least the Senate deserves the opportunity to vote up or down,” said Mr Schumer, calling Mr Trump “our unlikely ally.” Mr McConnell again blocked his request as he did on Tuesday.

Mr Schumer and other Democrats warned that they would not support efforts to unite Mr Trump’s three demands into one law.

The bill that Mr. McConnell was putting together would create a bipartisan commission to examine electoral practices that “empower” and “undermine the integrity of the election,” such as the use of postal ballot papers and voting procedures that Mr. McConnell uses. Trump has made unfounded complaints about encouraged election fraud. It would also repeal Section 230, a legal shield that prevents social media companies from being sued for much of the content users post on their platforms.

The second stimulus

Answers to your questions about the stimulus calculation

Updated December 30, 2020

The Economic Aid Package will issue payments of $ 600 and provide federal unemployment benefits of $ 300 for a minimum of 10 weeks. Find out more about the measure and what’s in it for you. For more information on how to get help, please visit our hub.

    • Do I get another incentive payment? Individual adults with adjusted gross income on their 2019 tax return of up to $ 75,000 per year will receive a payment of $ 600, and a couple (or someone whose spouse died in 2020) who earns up to $ 150,000 per year receives twice this amount. There is also a payment of $ 600 for each child for families who meet these income requirements. Individuals filing taxes with head of household status and earning up to $ 112,500 will also receive $ 600 plus the additional amount for children. People with incomes just above this level will receive a partial payment that decreases by $ 5 for every $ 100 of income.
    • When could my payment arrive? The finance department said on December 29 that it had started making direct deposits and would be mailing checks the next day. However, it will take a while for everyone to receive their money.
    • Does the agreement concern unemployment insurance? Legislators agreed to extend the length of time people can receive unemployment benefits and restart an additional federal benefit that is on top of the usual state benefits. But instead of $ 600 a week it would be $ 300. That will last until March 14th.
    • I am behind on my rent or expect to be soon. Do I get relief? The deal calls for $ 25 billion to be distributed by state and local governments to help backward tenants. In order to receive support, households must meet various conditions: the household income (for 2020) must not exceed 80 percent of the area median income; At least one household member must be at risk of homelessness or residential instability. and individuals must be eligible for unemployment benefits or face direct or indirect financial difficulties due to the pandemic. The agreement states that priority will be given to support for lower-income families who have been unemployed for three months or more.

Mr Trump attacked Section 230 for months, arguing with no evidence that the law allows websites to censor conservative views.

Mr. McConnell’s decision to prevent a vote on larger checks is likely to spark the problem in two tight trick-taking competitions in Georgia that will determine control of the Senate.

Both Republicans – Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue – who were trying to keep their seats, on Tuesday approved the larger controls in line with demands from their Democratic challengers, who labeled the $ 600 meager, and phrased the decision as an attempt to support the president. Within minutes of Mr. McConnell’s remarks, the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm attacked Ms. Loeffler and Mr. Perdue, calling their approval of the bill “empty gestures”.

Other Republicans – including Marco Rubio of Florida and Josh Hawley of Missouri – have rallied over larger checks and defied their party’s concerns about increasing the federal budget deficit.

“I’m concerned about the debt, but working families have been badly hurt by the pandemic,” Rubio said in a tweet. “That’s why I’ve supported $ 600 in direct payments to working families. If I get the chance, I’ll vote to increase the amount.”

Even so, despite Mr Trump’s request, the vast majority of Republicans have shown little interest in major economic reviews, arguing that more direct payments should be targeted closely to those in need of the money most.

“I found the combination of the aid we gave to the American people, much more than just a direct payment of $ 600, about right. It has been targeted, ”Tennessee Republican Senator Lamar Alexander told reporters on Wednesday. “If we want to spend that much money we will prefer to target it.”

Democrats “want to spend the money on people who frankly have not suffered financial losses during the pandemic, and it’s just wasteful,” said Republican Senator John Cornyn of Texas.

Mr Cornyn said he felt the issue of larger checks would be unlikely to move forward, shaking off the question of whether Republicans were concerned about the political setback of denying Mr Trump his request.

“After spending $ 4 trillion?” Mr. Cornyn replied, referring to the previous stimulus packages that Congress passed. “No, not in a normal world.”

Life With out Amazon (Effectively, Virtually)

“Ten years ago we didn’t order toilet paper from Amazon,” said Smalls. “Maybe it’ll take you so long to get over it.”

Harold Pollack, a professor at the University of Chicago, was interviewed by the New York Times in a 2012 story about customers who left Amazon. Dr. Pollack, who teaches public health, said at the time, “I don’t feel like they’re doing the way I want to support them with my consumer dollars.” He has since written critically about Amazon, including a 2018 comment titled “Better Chances for Jeff Bezos to Spend $ 131 Billion” recommending Mr. Bezos to allocate his “profits” to philanthropy rather than space. (In 2020 that number would be somewhere north of $ 180 billion.)

Dr. Pollack, reached by phone, said his criticism of Amazon had both broadened and deepened, but he was also a frequent customer now. “It’s chastening,” he said when asked to reconsider his attitude. “I use Amazon more in my life than I am comfortable with. It’s part of the infrastructure of my life just like the infrastructure of other people’s lives is, especially during Covid. “

Dr. Pollack then offered a new analysis that tried to include, or at least acknowledge, his ambivalence. “I think my own development is a symbol of why there needs to be public order solutions,” he said, citing concerns about antitrust law, Amazon’s wider role in the economy and, like its 2012 focus, the well-being of the company’s workforce. Amazon, he said, posed “an enormous collective action problem”.

The company has invaded his life inexorably. Using Amazon makes it easy to get work reimbursements. Amazon gift cards have become the de facto standard incentive for study participants (despite the concerns of some colleagues). In addition, Dr. Pollack like most people is busy.

“Amazon offers consumers tremendous value that enables us to look beyond many things,” he said. Going forward, he plans to “do the simple things that will allow me to minimize my trust in Amazon and feel good about it, but basically I won’t do the things that are less easy. And if I’m being honest, you can’t rely on me to discipline the company. “

Mr. Smalls, the former warehouse worker, offered clients like Dr. Pollack adopts a gentle, practiced attitude: Using Amazon could be like an addiction, or at least something that requires weaning. However, in an interview earlier this year, he may have been more open to the company’s habitual consumers. “Do you think you need Amazon?” he said in April, shortly after his release. “OK, what did you do a few years ago?”

Oxford researcher says future strains might be protected towards

Sir John Bell, a professor at Oxford University in the UK, told CNBC on Wednesday that he was confident that Covid-19 vaccines could be upgraded to provide effective protection against future coronavirus mutations.

Bell’s comments on “Closing Bell” come as global attention is focused on a strain of the virus that is widespread in the UK and that may spread more easily than previous variants. It has since been discovered in Colorado and California.

“This is going to be a game of cat and mouse,” said Bell, who worked with AstraZeneca to oversee vaccine development at Oxford. The UK government approved emergency vaccine use on Wednesday after granting limited approval for Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine earlier this month.

Studies are currently underway to officially determine whether Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine will protect against the new strain of the virus, Bell said. “We think they probably can, but we just want to be absolutely sure.”

“Given the level of disease in the UK with the new variant … we will have many examples of people who have had the vaccine and are exposed to the virus and we will be able to report fairly quickly on whether the vaccine actually protects against this strain,” added Bell added.

In addition to the coronavirus variant found in Great Britain, a separate strain has come into focus, which was first found in South Africa. Officials at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday it may also be floating around in America.

Bell told CNBC that he believes the variant discovered in South Africa has mutations that make it “a little more worrying” than the UK’s predominant strain. Still, Bell expressed confidence in how scientists will deal with virus mutations that escape the protection of existing vaccines.

“If we need to make new vaccines, now that we’ve done the first work, we can make them. I’m sure our friends can do the same with the RNA vaccines,” said Bell. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines were developed using messenger RNA technology, a new approach that uses genetic material to trigger an immune response. Oxford-AstraZeneca’s viral vector vaccine uses a weakened version of a cold virus that causes infections in chimpanzees.

“We are ready if we need to make another vaccine to get closer,” added Bell. He also noted that the vaccine update development process is unlikely to require the same large-scale clinical trials conducted this year, just immunogenicity studies to ensure that an immune response is elicited.

According to Dr. It is not uncommon for viruses to mutate, Scott Gottlieb, a former Food and Drug Administration commissioner who serves on Pfizer’s Board of Directors. “Some viruses like the flu develop their surface proteins very quickly, so we need a different flu vaccine every season,” he told CNBC earlier this month.

Gottlieb said at the time that he also believed the vaccines in place will protect against the strain of virus transmitted in the UK, as the vaccines target the entire spike protein of the coronavirus.

“We are developing antibodies against many different regions of this protein. Even if part of this protein were mutated and some antibodies no longer recognized it, there would be antibodies against other parts of this protein,” he said. “That probably won’t bypass our vaccines that easily, but at some point we’ll have to update the vaccines.”

Disclosure: Scott Gottlieb is a CNBC employee and a member of the boards of directors of Pfizer, the genetic testing startup Tempus, and the biotech company Illumina. Gottlieb is also co-chair of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings and Royal Caribbean’s Healthy Sail Panel.

California has recognized first case of recent Covid pressure recognized in UK, Newsom says

California health officials have identified the state’s first case of a new and contagious strain of Covid-19 that was originally discovered in the UK.

The patient is a 30-year-old male from San Diego county who showed symptoms on Sunday, San Diego county officials confirmed on Wednesday.

“I don’t think Californians should feel like this is anything strange. This is expected,” said White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci, on Wednesday during a live Q&A session with California Governor Gavin Newsom. Fauci said other states are likely to identify their own cases of the new strain soon.

Nathan Fletcher, a supervisor for San Diego County, said the patient was tested for Covid-19 Tuesday morning. Because he had not traveled, state officials believe there are other cases of the new strain in the county, Fletcher said at a press conference after Newsom announced the case.

Fletcher urged residents to follow public health instructions over the next few days to prevent further strain on the county’s hospitals, which are “under tremendous stress” from an onslaught of Covid-19 patients.

On Tuesday, Colorado health officials confirmed the first case of the B.1.1.7 variant of coronavirus. During a news conference Wednesday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis said the state is investigating a possible second case of the new tribe.

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said earlier Wednesday that the new tribe could put pressure on the country’s hospitals, which are already overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

Dr. Henry Walke, the agency’s Covid Incident Manager, said the new variant appears to be spreading “easier and faster than other strains”, but it doesn’t seem to make people sick or increase their risk of death.

A particularly worrying aspect of the Colorado case was that the patient had not traveled, “suggesting this variant was transmitted person-to-person in the United States,” Walke told reporters on a conference call.

Some good news: The new variant doesn’t appear to affect the vaccines’ effectiveness or make diagnosis difficult with existing tests, Fauci told Newsom. The UK has also found that people who were already infected with previous strains of Covid-19 do not appear to be re-infected with this new variant.

Researchers have yet to determine whether the new strain may be resistant to monoclonal antibody treatment, which has successfully helped some patients recover from the disease, Fauci said. Unlike vaccines, which trigger an immune response that attacks different parts of the virus, monoclonal antibodies target a very specific component, according to the country’s leading infectious disease expert.

Monoclonal antibodies have shown promising benefits if the virus is detected early enough. President Donald Trump attributed Regeneron’s treatment for feeling better “immediately” when he was infected and finally hospitalized with Covid-19 in early October.

“We know that about it now, but we’re following this extremely carefully,” said Fauci, adding that they are studying the exposure at the National Institute of Health and a number of laboratories across the country.

Surprise Girl and Her Evolving Look

In a trailer for “Wonder Woman 1984”, the title character is dressed in gold armor. This picture got the impulses of the fans racing, because in comics the metal suit is what the heroine wears for big battles. Wonder Woman, which was introduced in 1941, is part of DC’s Holy Trinity of Heroes, which includes Superman, which debuted in 1938, and Batman, which premiered in 1939. Like the outfits of her fellow heroes, Wonder Woman’s costume has evolved over time and even received a complete makeover from time to time. Here are some notable looks from Amazing Amazon over the years.

1941

The very first picture of Wonder Woman (who debuted in All-Star Comics before starring in Sensation and then her self-titled series) shows her in her original costume with a golden eagle emblem on her chest and a flowing, starry skirt. Diana – as Wonder Woman is called on Paradise Island, the home of her Amazon sisters – takes part in a competition to bring the marooned pilot Steve Trevor back to America. Spoiler: she wins! And she got the costume as designed by her mother, Queen Hippolyta. The outfit has changed over the years. Her skirt got shorter until it resembled the bottom half of a bikini. Sometimes she also avoided red boots for red sandals that were secured with straps to the knees.

During a visit to Paradise Island in 1968, Wonder Woman learns that her sisters are venturing into another dimension. Diana stays behind and performs the “great Amazon rite of renunciation”, giving up her strength. She returns to earth, is modified and, under the guidance of her blind mentor, I-Ching, learns martial arts in order to continue her fight for justice. This status quo lasted until 1972. It was lifted in part thanks to an intervention by Gloria Steinem, who protested the depowering of Wonder Woman. Steinem went on to put the traditionally dressed heroine on the cover of the first issue of Ms. magazine that year.

1981

After an adventure in Washington, DC, where Wonder Woman was based, representatives of a new charity approach her. They want the heroine to support their organization – the Wonder Woman Foundation – and consider wearing a new breastplate with a stylized double W. She hesitates, but after discussing the idea with her mother, who encourages her to wear it, she comes to a realization: “The cause will make the ‘W’ stand for not just ‘Wonder Woman’ – but women everywhere . ” She puts it on and explains, “That doesn’t look bad. Who knows? It could grow on me. “

1986

A fresh start in 1986 resulted in a retelling of Wonder Woman’s origins and her trip to America. This version of the heroine was younger and a little naive, but an even wilder warrior. Her revamped look equipped her with more weapons, including a battle ax, shield, and spear. Even her tiara was armed and razor sharp. She once used it to behead Deimos, the Greek god of terror who threatened the world.

In 1994, Queen Hippolyta had a vision of Wonder Woman’s death and held a new competition for the title. (She also made sure that her daughter lost.) Diana showed up with shorter hair and a uniform that showed even more skin thanks to matching black cycling shorts and sports bra. By 1995, she had reverted to a modified version of her familiar look, with fewer white stars in the lower half of her costume, but a giant tiara and a larger WW emblem that stretched to a wider belt. The 90s were tough for DC’s trinity: Superman died in 1992, Batman had a serious spinal injury in 1993, and Wonder Woman died in 1997. Ah, comics.

2001

Wonder Woman’s golden armor has its roots in Kingdom Come, a 1996 story set in a future where new heroes run amok in the absence of Superman. In this story, Wonder Woman uses the armor after tensions boil over in a prison for runaway, overpowering beings. The armor was later introduced in their today’s adventures. In a 2001 story, an alien threat named Imperiex targets Earth. Wonder Woman and Queen Hippolyta answer the call to arms, but only Diana survives – for a while. As comics taught fans, almost every character death is undone, and Hippolyta was later revived.

2010

In 2010, Wonder Woman reached issue # 600 thanks to a creative comic math that combined three volumes of their series to arrive at this mostly solemn issue. “Mostly” because one of those stories revealed that Wonder Woman’s timeline had been changed. In this new reality, Diana had been sent away as a child to escape the destruction of Paradise Island and had only retained vague visions of her life as a Wonder Woman. On the plus side, this new world order resulted in a new uniform – one that completely covered her legs! Other changes: Their red and gold gauntlets made a W-shaped impression on those unfortunate enough to be hit by them.

In 2011, DC restarted its entire line. The heroes were portrayed as younger, obliterating some long-standing relationships, and many of them were clad in overly crafted, armor-like costumes. Wonder Woman’s new look included additions to previous uniforms (collar and matching armband) and prints from those looks (goodbye, pants). The color palette was also more restrained: a deep red breastplate (with covered stars), dark blue shorts and boots, and silver accessories (except for the golden lasso of truth).
